City HistorySteeped in a rich and colorful history, Indian Wells has long been a source of prosperity for its inhabitants. In 1823, a Mexican explorer, Captain Jose Romero, gave Indian Wells its name upon discovering a thriving Cahuilla (Ka-wee-yah) Indian village formed around a hand-built well. The women of this tribe dug 30 feet ~ by hand ~ to find

the water that enabled the growth of the community. For nearly 40 years, Indian Wells was the Coachella Valley’s only established watering point and a pivotal stagecoach stop for intrepid gold prospectors seeking their fortunes on the Colorado River. The first settlers, including Caleb Cook, arrived around 1910 and were credited with pioneering the valley’s date industry.

In the 1950’s, savvy residents, led by E.M. Peterson, transformed their prosperous agricultural community into a premier residential and resort destination. That golden era began in 1957 with the construction of the Eldorado Country Club and Golf Course, followed by

the Indian Wells Country Club and Golf Course, with Desi Arnaz as one of the founders. In 1958, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz also opened the Indian Wells Hotel (now the Indian Wells Resort Hotel) and Indian Wells grew into an intimate, celebrity-studded retreat. When President Dwight D. Eisenhower first vacationed here, he was so impressed with Indian Wells that it became his winter residence. In 1960, Arnold Palmer won the first Bob

Hope Desert Classic at the Indian Wells Country Club, which was the start of Indian Wells’ legacy as a top-ranked golf destination.

In the late 1970’s, City officials and residents envisioned Indian Wells’ future designation as a residential resort and the Coachella Valley’s luxury leader. The City developed an innovative plan for growth by investing in land to develop a municipal golf course that would attract premium resorts. Tennis pro Charlie Pasarell understood this vision. He decided to move his Pilot Pen tennis tournament to Indian Wells and build the Hyatt Grand Champions Resort. The tournament outgrew the facility, moving to its permanent home, the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, in 2000. The prestigious tournament was renamed the Pacific Life Open in 2002 and then BNP Paribas Open in 2009. As proud host of the fifth largest masters series in the world, Indian Wells has firmly established its association with championship tennis.

What was once a flourishing tribal well and wagon stop has since become a prosperous wellspring of luxury, synonymous with fine living and world-class events. Our arrowhead symbol represents our proud heritage, the ingenuity of our people, and the promise of an exceptional experience.

Demographic SnapshotIndian Wells is a premier residential community that spreads over 15.04 square miles. Incorporated in 1967, it is the 400th city in California, 16th in Riverside County and fourth in the Coachella Valley. Riverside is the fastest growing county in California and the Coachella Valley has grown 70% since the year 2000. Nearly 90% of the neighborhoods in Indian Wells are gated, including seven private country clubs. There are more than 5,025 full-time residents and an additional 5,000-6,000 part-time residents during the winter months (January – April). Visit www.CityofIndianWells.org for more information.

But the City’s tennis legacy was forged when tennis pro Charlie Pasarell moved his Pilot Pen tournament to Indian Wells and built the Hyatt Grand Champions Resort with a tennis stadium on site. The tournament outgrew the facility and moved to its permanent home, the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, in 2000. The tournament was renamed the Pacific Life Open in 2002 and BNP Paribas Open in 2009.
