A trail for the whole family or anadventurous experience foroff-road enthusiasts, there issomething for everyone... from the11 mile Family Cycle Trail to thenationally acclaimed Verderers’Trail which offers seven miles ofall-weather adrenalin. If downhilltracks are your thing, try the SkiRun or the Corkscrew, which bothlead to Cannop Cycle Centre.

1. Two wheel funWith miles of trails from family-friendlyflat to heart-thumping downhillchallenges, two wheels are the bestway to explore the Forest of Deanand Wye Valley. 2. Canoe or kayakRun the rapids at Symonds Yat ortake a lazy cruise through stunningscenery, either are fun and uniqueways to experience the dramaticlandscape that changes with everyseason. 5. Take to the treetopsThere's more than 20-million trees inthe Forest of Dean and it's home toGo Ape tree top adventure. 6. Ride the futureRide, glide and travel seamlessly on atwo-wheel all-terrain segway vehicleat the National Diving and ActivityCentre in Tidenham, where SegwayActive teaches balance and poisebefore a spin around a purpose-builtoff-road circuit. Segways are alsoavailable at Go Ape.

Sculpture TrailThe four-mile Sculpture Trail is one ofthe UK's first and features 16 workscreated by artists commissioned tointerpret the Forest environmentand the history of its landscape.The sculptures are installed withinthe woodland, so seek out the bluering posts that will help you tonavigate the trail.Or make life easier and pick up amap at Beechenhurst Lodge.

AccessibilityWe are a very accessible forest withmany short walks suitable for theless able or families with youngchildren.A few options include:• Enjoy a circular route along thebanks of the River Wye; keep aneye out for canoeists, birds of preyand the ancient hand-pulled ferrybeneath the Saracen's Head Inn.• Go in search of bats andbutterflies around the atmosphericremains of the Dark Hill ironworks.• Gaze out towards the BreconBeacons, admire Cleddon Fallswaterfall and spot rare Nightjars asyou explore Trellech Beacon.• Wander the half mile, all-abilitylakeside path around Mallards Pike,one of the forest's most popularwalking spots.

8. Crags and cliffsHead skywards prior to a daringdescent at Symonds Yat, home toamazing climbing and abseilingterrain. Contour Outdoor and ForestAdventure provide all the equipmentand professional rope skills tonegotiate riverside crags and cliffs upto giddy heights with stunning views.

9. Walk and workoutNordic walking is a fun, full-bodyworkout for all ages and levels offitness. Feel light on your feet as youpropel yourself through paths andbridleways to explore otherwisehidden locations. 10. Hole in oneThere are numerous golf courses inthe area suitable for the novice,enthusiast or professional. Forest Hillsfeatures a challenging par-72 course,while those who prefer thrills, spillsand windmills should tee-off at theKrazy Golf course in Lydney, whereeach hole represents a destination inor around the forest.

Our steam trains wind their way along a ¾ mile through farmland and woods.There are four stations, each with paths to walk through the ancient PerrygroveWood on the edge of the Forest of Dean. A trip takes just over 20 minutes butmost passengers get off to go to the covered picnic and play area at Foxy Hollow– or to go treasure hunting – and return by a later train. Lydney•Once an important location for shipping timber, coal and iron through the docks.

• Lydney Train Station with trains running to the popular attraction Dean Forest Railway.

• The Lydney Murder (1964) was a subject on an episode of the Discovery Channel documentary “Crime Museum UK with Martin Kemp”.

Cinderford• The name Cinderford has been around since the 14th Century but the town wasn’t actually thereuntil 1840, the name reflects the area at that time; a ford across thebrook full of cinders from Roman iron workings.

• Fantastic town trail with six artworks that portray the past industrial and cultural activity.

• Look out for the war memorial and a statue of a local Freeminer.

Monmouth• By day a great mix of boutique andhigh street shops and by night alarge range of eateries and pubs.

• Look out for Shire Hall, a splendid Grade 1* listed building.

• In September 2013, evidence was found of a Bronze Age boatbuildingcommunity, including three 100 feet long channels adjoining the site of a now vanished lake.

• The only known example of the 16th Century ‘Monmouth Cap’, canbe seen at Monmouth Museum.

Coleford• Robert Mushet perfected the Bessemer process for the making ofsteel in Coleford.

• The clock tower used to be that of a church, the rest of the church gotdemolished as it got too small for the congregation.

• There is an ancient burial path thatruns from Coleford to Newland.

• Coleford is home to children’s writer and illustrator Shoo Rayner.

Ross-on-Wye• The town sits high on a sandstone cliff, overlooking the River Wye and has an array of gardens and excellent riverside walks.

• The Prospect Public Garden offers a view of the famous horseshoe bend in the River Wye.

• ‘The Plague Cross’ (also known as the Corpse Cross) was built in the churchyard of St. Mary’s in 1637 as a memorial to 317 people who died from the plague.

Summer SplendourThe haze of summer makes for perfectpicnics and lakeside strolls. Unwindand relax as you wander through35 square miles of forest. Gaze atbeautiful butterflies, the forest ishome to more than 30 species - including purple hairstreak, whiteadmiral, silver washed fritillary andthe grizzled skipper.

Spend an evening listening to the fascinating nightjar or take part insome bat watching. The Wye Valley ishome to an internationally-importantpopulation of lesser horseshoe bat.

Autumnal GloryThe area radiates in Autumn whenevergreen trees blend with russets ofoak, beech and larch turning the areainto a riot of colour and the best natural displays in the UK. Take fulladvantage of this display by following the Forest Route, featuringthe spectacular Golden Mile.

For something a little more unusualget up with the dawn chorus becauseearly morning is the best time to spotdeer in the forest. We saw the duoin 2013's Christmas special, wherethe Dr and Clara found themselvestransported to a snow-covered Puzzlewood inhabited by the deadlyWeeping Angels.

From the creators of Merlin, BBC'sAtlantis regularly films in the Forestof Dean at Clearwell Caves, SymondsYat, Speech House Lake, MoselyGreen and Puzzlewood. Now in itsthird series, we hope Atlantis will return in the near future.

The Forest is steeped in Arthurian legend with Merlin, the successfulBBC fantasy drama, which returnedto Puzzlewood, Clearwell Caves andseveral Forestry Commission sites for five series. We hosted druids,dragons and unicorns as the areawas transformed into a fantasy landfit for a magical adventure.

In CBBC's Wizards Vs Aliens, Puzzlewood is the site of an encounter between the schoolboyheroes and the Alien Nekross.

Puzzlewood made its feature WarnerBros film debut in 2013 in Jack theGiant Slayer, where it played host toNicholas Hoult, Ewan McGregor,Stanley Tucci and many otherhousehold names.
