Konica Minolta launches tech-savvy machines @ PAMEX ‘15

The stand of Konica Minolta (D21) is abuzz with activities with the launch of JetVarnish 3DS and bizhub Press C1100/C1085. JetVarnish 3DS from MGI offers digital spot UV coating on

different page sizes from A4 to 36.4x104cm at a speed of 2,298 A3 pages per hour. “The product is generating a lot of interest among visitors,” says Yuji Nakata, MD, Konica Minolta Business Solutions India Pvt Ltd. “This is a major show after we took over the Konica Minolta division of Monotech Systems. It is very heartening to see many direct customers coming to the show to see new technologies,” he added.

“JetVarnish is a bridge between digital and offset printers as the machine can be used for finishing both digital as well as offset prints,” added V Balakrishnan, executive general manager – marketing, Konica Minolta Business Solutions.

Talking about the newly launched bizhub Press C71hc, Balakrishnan shared that there have been three key improvements in the press – skin tone, handling shadows and no more outlines. “This is a major leap in technology for photographers,” he added.

Briefing about their experience at PAMEX, Balakrishnan shared, “Besides, there has been a lot of interest in print on demand for monochrome segment for publishing. POD will continue to co-exist with offset printing in book publishing as there are many niche publications. POD also helps in reducing costs and increasing profitability.”

So did Konica Minolta close some deals at the show? “We always close a few deals at such shows and PAMEX is no exception,” added Balakrishnan.

Another important fact that Balakrishnan mentioned was that they have 300 engineers in 44 locations across India, which ensures that customers get timely after sales service.

While, Anil added, “The last edition of PAMEX was held at Greater Noida and it was not a good show. So, it was a challenge to convince the exhibitors to give PAMEX another chance. But with the success of PAMEX ’15, we can now focus our energies and time on promoting the exhibition and we hope to get a good contingent of exhibitors from China and Europe in 2017.”

As a message to printers, Tushar shared, “It is very important to visit a trade expo as it is all about seeing the new trends in the industry and witnessing new t e c h n o l o g i e s ” . “Smaller exhibitors also offer solutions for specific

problems which printers face. So, you need to spend time and find solutions, suitable to your needs,” added Anil.

This is just the beginning...the next PAMEX ’17 will return to Mumbai from December 18-21, 2017. See you again!

FUJIFILM India showcases game-changing CtP system and large-format UV printer

EXHIBITION NEWS

There have been positive sentiments across the printing industry as India seems to be on the growth path. As CN Ashok, MD &

CEO, Autoprint Machinery Manufacturers Pvt Ltd, puts it, “India is in the growing phase with the new government in place and the moment the growth reaches 8-10%, the per capita consumption will go up. With this, the printed products consumption will go up.”

“The status of offset printing in India looks good and we hope that with the implementation of GST, the market will boom further. In packaging, we do see a growth of 17 to 19 percent while in commercial we do see the growth of 16 to 17 percent. The semi-commercial segment (customers who are in the migration stage from commercial to packaging) is likely to grow by 18 to 20%,” says Sangam Khanna, president & managing director (Komori Division), Insight Communication & Print Solutions India Pvt Ltd.

While, Neeraj Dargan of MR Sheetfed India Pvt Ltd, says that offset printing has become more focused, based on segment and products. Some segments are high growth areas whereas some are being challenged by different technologies like digital, internet, desktop printing at home, etc. “This intervention or segregation is going to be widened in times to come with packaging and special applications will continue to grow at double digits,” he adds. Neeraj was present at PAMEX ‘15 as a visitor.

“With ‘Make in India’ campaign, we need to produce products that are globally competitive. In this situation, printers need to come up with consistent quality with affordable pricing. They also need to have an effective management, minimise waste and enhance productivity. Right now, the skill levels are poor with the workforce in printing and this needs to be addressed on an urgent basis,” adds Ashok.Digital vs. offset

Digital printing has, undoubtedly, changed the way we print. But, the technology is going hand in hand with the offset technology. A few offset printing manufacturers are now offering digital solutions as well. For example, Komori will be launching the digital press in Drupa 16. Besides, Komori has opened a new chapter in the very short run offset on demand using the HUV technology and they have installed now 12 machines in India over the last two to three months.

“The end use is redefining the introduction of digital as now all commercial printing applications, previously done on offset, are needed just in time with corresponding lower print orders, hence digital is more viable. This situation is to be accepted and it’s time to find newer methods/markets to replace revenue,” advises Neeraj.Few of the players in the industry…

Komori is a dedicated company which manufactures only offset printing machines and no post press or pre-press solutions. “But, it is backed up with a very strong R&D which is one of the highest in the industry globally,” shares Sangam. “Komori is a reliable print engineering service provider and a reliable partner to grow with your printing requirements, which may come from a commercial basic Enthrone to Lithrone 26/29/32 for high volume printing. For

the packaging and value added printing, we have the Lithrone 26/29/32 with coater UV & HUV and in the large segment we have the GL 40 and LS 44 with and Coater UV & HUV technology. For the publishing low and high volume, we do have the Komori 40” dedicated perfector and the Komori System 35 and System 38 web presses. The Komori dedicated perfectors are also very popular in the pharma inserts in the packaging segment. For the customers who need high speed bulk volumes like the liquid and mono carton, we have the Komori Chambon which is capable of producing roll to blank in 12 sec mainly.” At Insight Communication stand at PAMEX ‘15, Komori is showcasing a Komori Enthrone 29 with full automation, and they have already closed a deal for the same.

Sheet-fed offset printing: set to be more focused and growth-oriented

Learn about flexible electronics @ PAMEX ‘15

German company MBO’s subsidiary Herzog+Heymann exhibits its range of machines for pharmaceutical

outserts. “We have shown our popular M8.40 Outster Insert Systems here at PAMEX ’15;

we are happy that we have sold this machine to Hyderabad-based pharma packaging firm Temple Packaging during the show,” said Dirk Stuhmeir, MD, Herzog+Heymann. Dirk is excited with the overall footfalls and arrangement of PAMEX ’15 and he asserted that participation in such strategic expo would enhance their presence in the Indian phrama product packaging market. Herzog+Heymann has been in the Indian market for over the last 10 years.

While, Manroland Sheetfed’s USP is proven technology with continuous innovations. “Customer first approach to respond to all needs of existing customer base of several generations, improvements on Roland 700 HiPrint and the new Roland 700 Evolution, already launched in November 2014, will be at live demo in DRUPA 2016,” told Neeraj.

Autoprint focuses on both commercial as well as packaging industry. While, for the commercial segment, they cater to the rural and semi-urban belt, their packaging solutions are for hi-end customers. “Our USP is identifying a problem, pin-pointed by a printer and designing an innovative solution at affordable prices,” tells Ashok. At PAMEX ’15, Autoprint is showcasing print inspection system and die-punching machine for the packaging segment. While for the commercial printing segment, they are showcasing a 4-colour non-woven bag printer, single-colour non-woven printer, offset machine with variable data and automated creasing machine. Talking about the ongoing PAMEX ’15, Ashok shares, “The quality of crowds is encouraging. The good number of footfalls on week days proves that we have very serious customers.” Autoprint has closed 10 deals for various products at the show.

Provin Technos Pvt Ltd is the pan India agency for Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Printing and Packaging Machinery Ltd for sheet fed and commercial web presses. They offer printing machines from Ryobi MHI Graphic Technology Ltd, Japan. RMG has introduced the state-of-the-art LED UV curing system. They also represent Rotatek S.A, Spain for narrow web label and offset presses. The company also represents BW Paper Systems UK for complete range on Reel to Sheet machines in India; Mitsubishi Heat Set Web Presses and Paper Guillotine Knives.

As a message to printers, Ashok says, “Investment must be made but with caution and payback on investment will be there within 3-5 years.”

PACKAGING

Thanks to impressive print packaging, brands can seduce customers into

a change of purchasing vote at the point of purchase, says Superbrands founder Marcel Knobil. “We would end up with less brand and more bland were it not for the attention that the packaging attracts.” Superbrands is acclaimed worldwide as being an independent authority and arbiter of branding excellence, committed to paying tribute to exceptional brands and promoting the discipline of branding. The impact of a winning combination of text and graphics extends way beyond fronting up that initial beauty parade. As well as being the ‘eye candy’ that hooks the consumer in the first instance,

but also print processes - and indeed from one printer to another, not only in different locations but even when they are running presses made by the same m a n u f a c t u r e r - maintaining consistency can be a complex undertaking. The best way to meet it is to ensure that all the contributory links within the supply chain which are engaged in steering the progress of a printed pack from hatch to despatch are all able to interact via an open entry web-based platform.

“Our vision is to connect the supply chain from the brand

owner to the retailer and to make that flow broader and richer,” says Jef Stoffels, Esko marketing director.“We do this by adding greater functionality which meets the go-to-market and quality needs of CPG (consumer packaged goods) businesses and retailers. We also make it possible for the brand owner to ensure that the

a perfectly reproduced external image provides consumers with an often subliminal product recognition and reassurance that can be the brand owner’s banker in a congested retail space. Today’s packaging trends are driven by longer supermarket opening hours, continually enhanced print technologies and capabilities and demand to protect brands and increase recognition. Not only surviving but attaining the status as the preferred choice under such highly testing conditions is one half of the brand owner’s greatest challenge. The other is to meet it at an affordable cost. Controlling quality

With the high probability of colour variations occurring not only between different substrates,

Brand new perspectives in packaging printLooks count and first impressions matter. How products are judged by their many differing attributes - not least fitness for purpose, consistent reliability and value for money - will determine the extent to which they build market share on an ongoing basis. Prior to that, however, it will probably be a particular spot colour, a distinctive font, or else the artful application of a metallic ink on the exterior of the pack that initiates the relationship between a brand and a consumer. Des King discusses the brand new perspectives in packaging.

Page 7: Visitors throng PAMEX ’15; replicates the 2006 success! · the packaging and value added printing, we have the Lithrone 26/29/32 with coater UV & HUV and in the large segment we

12 December, Day4 7

PACKAGINGflow of data is secure and transparent, mistakes and errors can be picked up early or avoided altogether and the net result is to get products to market faster.” Similarly web-based colour management systems can extend the same degree of comfort and control to brand owners over how pre-determined colour parameters are then replicated accurately irrespective of substrate or supplier, ensuring a guaranteed consistency of colour reproduction that underpins brand authenticity and integrity. The X-Rite PantoneLIVE colour management solution is ideal for the brand owner as it has control over the pre-determined colour parameters, these are then stored in the cloud for use as and when required by his supply chain. This ensures accurate replications of the accredited brand image irrespective of substrate or supplier.

Pressed to perform Converters equipped

with smarter production facilities can be more directly instrumental in achieving cost and performance benefits to brand owners. Using high-definition flexo plate and software technologies, it is now possible to meet the requirements of 85 percent of current flexo-printed, flexible packaging without detriment to the finished result from CMYK + white rather than using special inks.

It’s not just improvement at the front-end that is raising quality and performance standards in flexo, still the sector’s most widely used print process accounting for over 40 percent of a current global printed packaging market worth around an estimated €250 bn per annum, particularly for flexibles and corrugated board applications. Speed on the press and consistency across substrates are key.

Digital mindset What has sparked these

improvements in analogue press technology is the increasingly potent challenge posed by digital print; not least in meeting brand owner

requirements for cost-efficient shorter run lengths – and thereby, lower inventory levels – and the ability to differentiate products on-shelf through customisation. Whilst affordably utilising variable data has always been part and parcel of the digital print proposition, it’s now clearly on the retail marketing radar following its successful adoption by highprofile retail marketing campaigns run by Coca Cola, Heineken, Nutella and a steadily growing band of global blue-chip brands.

The finishing touch Customisation is not the

only route to catching the consumer’s eye on-shelf. Short-run, cost-effective special effects such as high gloss, glitter, metallic without recourse to hot-foil stamping and even Braille are also within the remit of next-generation digital post - press enhancement technology now establishig itself within the finishing sector. Also providing a more cost-effective means of achieving greater stand-out is the take-up of cold foiling using the analogue process - notably as an alternative to laminated / metallised substrates for labels and cartons. Meanwhile, at the higher end of the scale is the arresting 3D effect achieved through the use of Fresnel lens technology providing instant ‘stand-out’ in retail duty-free for cartons containing the global gin brand Bombay Sapphire.

The new frontier Quite a number of

applications on the market bring into play mobile technology. For example, on-pack augmented reality

(AR) applications pioneered by Blippar that allow users to simply look at an object through the camera on their smartphone to activate an instantaneous digital search and draw down information from the web. In a recent campaign for Perrier, the invitation to consumers to shake their phone like a cocktail shaker to reveal a recipe was a typically innovative way to highlight the overall concept and add fun by using the technology to unique advantage.

Underpinning product security and thereby underpinning brand integrity is another obvious avenue being explored by smart technologies. A fully printed near-field communication sensor tag (NFC) developed by Thin Film Electronics for Diageo’s Johnnie Walker whisky doubles as a security and anti-counterfeiting device as well as interacting with smartphones to dispense product advice and information. As a lot of the labelling and pre-printed information currently required to be displayed on-pack is gradually phased out, just imagine the potential for branding afforded by that freed-up real estate.

Brands are currently getting maybe only 40 percent of the pack’s surface for its primary purpose. However, if one small interactive barcode resolves all the regulatory and legal requirements 90 percent of the print surface could be released for marketing the product.

Eye-catching and innovative printed packaging is a shrewd investment towards building a loyal and enduring customer-base, concludes Des King. Whilst consumers are exercising greater versatility than ever before in choosing how and where they are able to gather information through which to determine product preferences, packaging offers the brand owner a uniquely guaranteed opportunity to control how they communicate with prospective customers face to face in-store at the very point of purchase.
