The Language of the Lyrics Do you remember when you were taught this little exercise? A B C D E F G......H I J K LMNOP. Probably a little tune has now come back to mind — right? One of the most fundamental facts in life was learned this way!

Probably most of us will not always remember many of the Sunday School lessons taught or those great sermons preached, but I suspect when I start this series of words “What a Friend we have in…” or “Holy, Holy…” or “Tis So Sweet to…”, you are able to finish, perhaps even sing, the rest of that stanza and maybe even the entire song.

When a songwriter writes their lyrics or a music composer writes the melody and the harmony, it is done for the express purpose that you will remember.

Great Biblical truths are often carried on those whole, half, quarter or eighth notes, and yes, we often do retain them.

How often have you, the reader of this article, had a time or situation in your life, when dealing with an uncertainty, a difficult moment or a loss of some type, found yourself cleaving to a tune or some lyrical content and found peace, encouragement and solace in that moment.

Evaluating the makeup of man, it is a true fact that we are an emotional and aesthetic being. Music, appealing to the emotional and aesthetic feeling of man, communicates best. It should never overshadow the preaching of the Word, but when supported by the spoken word, results are seen, even in our own personal life experiences. Down through history, music has always been the handmaiden of great spiritual awakenings.

How very important we not sacrifice good and sound doctrine, or com-promise the gospel content of our songs for the sake of some trendy new music idiom. Let us not forget those early fundamental ways we learned our precious songs of the faith...our ABC's.

May we sing songs, new and old alike, that draw us to sit at Jesus’ feet, and express our deep love for Him.

Satisfied in His Service, Paul Matthews Minister of Music

THE BOOKWORM

Oh, it's such a joy to be able to stretch out on the library shelves! If you haven't looked yet (tsk, tsk), that new, tall bookcase has made it possible to spread out the book collection. Now my digestion-- er, that is, my understanding of the books has a chance to mature. Besides, I'm not confined in such tight quarters on book shelves that are almost sagging with books from end to end. Ah, to streeeetch. Even my worthless helper has noticed the difference. Of course, he has the job of shifting the collection from the Reference section to the Fiction books. Whine, whine, whine! That's all I hear from him--as I loll at my ease, comfortably contemplating my next meal--oops! that is, of course, the next delightful book I can investigate. Why don't you join me? You are always welcome in the library.

Your friend, Bookworm

MISSIONARY OF THE MONTH

Our missionaries for the month of February are Mission Service Corps volun-teers, Ken and Thurleen Bain, operating as kTb Ministries (KTBM). They

serve the Native Americans of the Sonoran Desert, including the Tohono O'odham, the Pima and other tribes. The Bains have uniquely been invited to live for seven years now in Hikiwan, in the west central part of the vast Tohono O'odham Nation. They share the gospel and help meet the spiritual and physical needs of Native American families who endure impoverished conditions.

Recognizing that the most effective ministry in this mission field is best done by other Native Americans, the goal of kTb Ministries is to teach, mentor and train Indian believers who will in turn teach, mentor and train others to do like-wise. The Bains report that on the reservation, true Christ believers have often worshiped almost underground because of community pressure from a naturally suspicious culture borne from the residues of a spiritually toxic mys-tic admixture of ancient I'itoi mythology and iconic Catholicism. However, God has brought about relationships and opened new doors this year of which human endeavors could only dream. In concert with two other mission couples in both the North and South, and missionaries who are probing the dangerous Mexican Sonoran Desert, where God is saving literally thousands, KTBM believes it will lead to changing the face of the region.

Transportation costs on the vast and remote reservation are enormous. The utility rates on the reservation are also extremely high and the mission team faithfully relies on the Lord to provide the utility, transportation, and other ex-penses of this vital ministry.

Nothing is too hard for our God, Jehovah Jireh, who is our Provider of multi-plying supply. They ask for the intercession of prayer warriors, and friends who will be missionaries by partnership to support their efforts. You can learn more about their work at their website: www.ktbministries.org.

Paul and Susan Anderson are originally from Minnesota, where they raised their four children. They moved to Texas to take care of family and are now living in Catalina full time. After visiting many churches in the area, they liked Vistoso Community and have been attending since May. They were drawn here by the teaching and music ministry. Paul and Susan both spend much of their time vol-unteering at the Wycliffe offices in Catalina. In addition to their children who are scattered from California to Russia (as missionaries), they have 20 grandchil-dren! If you have not met this wonderful couple, please introduce yourself and welcome them to the church!

Peggy Burnap moved to Tucson from Albuquerque, NM in May of 2012 mainly for the purpose of volunteering her time in the offices of the Wycliffe Ministry. She has four grown children living in North Carolina, California and Colorado. This includes five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She began visiting VCC in September 2012 and has been sharing her musical talents in the choir. Peggy enjoys reading and has taught ladies Bible studies in her previous church. She also teaches in the Good News after-school program for first graders at Coronado School. Welcome to VCC, Peggy!

NEW ATTENDERS CLASS On Sundays February 9 and 16, Pastor Kevin will hold a New Attenders class during the 11:10 Bible study time period. The class will meet in the confer-ence room (west end of the Fellowship Hall) for these two consecutive weeks. This is the perfect opportunity for you to get answers to any questions you might have about church doctrine, background, membership and future plans. If you are new to Vistoso Community Church and have felt yourself drawn to continue to fellowship with us, I strongly urge you to consider setting aside the time to attend.

WEDNESDAY MIDWEEK SERVICE During the month of February, Pastor Redig will con-tinue his Sunday topic at the Wednesday prayer ser-vice & Bible study. It will be an opportunity to ask questions, raise issues and discuss points that were made on Sunday morning.

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS

A SPECIAL THANK YOU… To Joe Markwell, Bill Carson and Charles Bone for the work they put into fixing up the Children’s Bible Study classroom. They painted and filled holes in the walls and cleaned the carpet. Check it out as you walk by. They did a great job and the room looks fantastic. Thank you so much!
