VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS

With the passage of the Goals 2000: Educate America Act, the arts are written into federal law. The lawacknowledges the arts as a core subject, as important to education as language arts, mathematics, history, science, and foreign language. National and state standards in visual and performing arts have beendeveloped, and, on January 10, 2001, the California State Board of Education adopted standards in thevisual and performing arts.* Furthermore, California law requires courses in visual and performingarts/foreign language for high school graduation.

Both district-developed and district-adopted texts and guides are used throughout the K–12 curriculum. Inaddition, the 2001 Visual and Performing Arts Content and Performance Standards and the 1996 Visualand Performing Arts Framework from the California State Department of Education provide districtguidelines.

Elementary-level music and art are taught using state-approved commercial textbook series. Drama anddance are taught at the discretion of classroom teachers and often are used as pedagogical strategies to im-prove learning.

The Education Code requires that courses in visual and performing arts be included in the grades 7–12course of study.
