VISUAL ART

Just Left of Copernicus (The Roof of the Story)Just Left of Copernicus is an exhibition of new work by Irish artist Niamh McCann. In collaboration with architects Jack Byrne and Séamus Bairéad, McCann has created a large-scale work for the Main Gallery at VISUAL. Entitled Copernicus for Now and made of industrially produced cardboard tubes and plywood, the work draws on many references, ranging from topographical photos of the moon landscape from the 1969 moon landings, to the work of Buckminister Fuller, to the ideas of German expressionist architect and scenographer Hans Poelzig (1869-1936), best known for the design of Frankfurt’s IG Farben building and the sets for the iconic film Der Golem. What ties these together is McCann’s interest in the interchange and flow of fact and fiction, the overlapping layers of narrative, history and fable contained within the cultural and physical structures that we construct.

A catalogue of the exhibition with texts by Francis Mackee, Francis Halsall and Grainne Hassett will be launched in November 2015

F Lobby Gallery3rd Oct 2015 – 10th Jan 2016

A film by artist and choreographer Jérôme Bel, explores the formal aspects of the stage, and how the physical presence of a dancer and the relationship with theatrical space can hold an audience captive.

In 2004, the Paris Opera commissioned Bel to make this documentary about the real-life ballerina Véronique Doisneau. Close to retirement age, she stands alone on stage, ruminatively considering her career. Doisneau dances, hums music, and speaks frankly to an audience about life as a ballet dancer. The resulting performance is both moving and illuminating.

Véronique Doisneau was produced by Telemondis and the Paris Opéra, and co-realised by Pierre Dupouey and Jérôme Bel.

An interactive study that looks at ways in which the body reacts to the built environments that we are framed by, and how the proportions of the body inform built space. Visitors are invited to draw and map the movements of a figure as she balances within a fixed space. Her positions have been influenced by images of the human figure from popular culture, the history of art, architecture, drama and dance.

Made by VISUAL in collaboration with Dance Artist in Residence Emma Martin, photographer Kilian Waters and dancer Justine Cooper.

Yer Wan isn’t interested in any long term relationship. A big picture of Ryan Gosling adorns her wall and this seems to be her vision of the ideal male. The Seduction of Chaos A tense and emotional three-hander that asks, does everyone have a price?

The Quality of Boiled Water A Wall Street whizz-kid wakes up with a strange woman in a strange bed in a strange house in this delightfully oddball comedy.

Back by popular demand, the true story of the last public hanging of a woman in Ireland. On March 30th 1835, Lucinda Sly and John Dempsey – her lover and her junior by 30 years – were hanged in Carlow for the murder of her husband Walter. Behind the executions lay a story of land, love, lust, religion and murder. John MacKenna’s play – the first in the Barrow Trilogy at VISUAL – played to sold-out houses across the country on its first tour. This performance brings a second national tour to an end.

One of Ireland’s greatest comic talents, Jon Kenny, returns for another performance with the legendary Irish actor Mary McEvoy in Michael Scott’s iconic production of The Matchmaker.

John B. Keane’s hilarious hit play follows the efforts of Dicky Mick Dicky O’Connor to make matches for the lonely and lovelorn from all parts of the country. At the centre of this celebrated production is John B’s marvellous and mischievous wit coupled by his unparalleled way with words.

Mon Oncle (My Uncle) is a 1958 comedy film by French filmmaker Jacques Tati. The first of Tati’s films to be released in colour, Mon Oncle won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, a Special Prize at the 1958 Cannes Film Festival, and the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Foreign Language Film. The film centres on the socially awkward yet lovable character of Monsieur Hulot and his quixotic struggle with postwar France’s infatuation with modern architecture, mechanical efficiency and consumerism. Tati deliberately uses architecture and design to punctuate his satire, in this visual and entertaining comedy.
