ABOUT THE VISUAL STORY We have prepared this visual story for audiences attending the Relaxed Performance of Peter Pan in Serangoon Gardens.

A Relaxed Performance is an inclusive theatrical experience designed for individuals with neurodiverse needs. Less formal and more supportive of sensory, communication, movement and learning needs, it presents the full version of the production with minor modifications like reduced sound levels and house lights remaining on but lowered throughout.

Materials will also be provided to help attendees prepare for the experience, including detailed directions as well as plot and character descriptions. No one will be asked to leave during a Relaxed Performance for making sounds and movements related to differing cognitive / developmental abilities, and a rest area will be designated for anyone who would like to step out at any time.

If you require any additional information or if you would like to discuss your specific requirements, please contact us at by emailing [email protected]

WHAT HAPPENS IN THE STORY? SPOILER ALERT!

ACT 1

Scene 1 The performance opens with a song, ‘Time for a Story’. After the song, we see John and Michael at home, playing pirates. Their parents, Mr and Mrs De Sousa, are preparing for a wedding dinner. Mr De Sousa can’t seem to find his special tie and cufflinks.

Wendy, John and Michael’s eldest sister, returns home after tuition and is tasked by Mrs De Sousa to take care of her brothers while her parents are out. Wendy plays with them when Mr De Sousa walks in and discovers they have used his tie, shirt and cufflinks to play. Mrs De Sousa tells them to stop playing, feeds them emulsion and go to bed. Wendy is tasked to clean up and go do her homework.

As Wendy tidies up, she sings ‘That Wendy’, a reminder of her younger days where she used to make believe.

Scene 2 John and Michael are sleeping in bed. Peter Pan and Ting Tong Bell enter through the window. Ting Tong Bell blows some fairy dust upon the sleeping boys so that they remain asleep. Here, Peter notices the audience and wants to find out what they are good at. Peter claims that he is the best at everything and begins to sing ‘I’ll Never Be A Man’.

After the song, Peter and Ting Tong Bell tries to look for the book that Wendy tells stories from. Wendy comes in and notices them. She quickly

wake her brothers up and takes a mop as a weapon. Peter and Ting Tong Bell reveal themselves and how they have come for the stories that Wendy tells her brothers every night. Peter invites Wendy and her brothers to Neverland so that Wendy can tell the stories to the Lost Boys.

With a little fairy dust and some wonderful thoughts, Peter teaches Wendy and her brothers to fly. They sing ‘Wonderful Thoughts/Flying’.

Scene 3 In Neverland. We see three little fairies dancing, and two pirates trying to catch them. These two pirates are Simi and Daiji, Captain Hook’s trusted crew. They manage to catch a fairy, but the fairy runs away. Captain Hook enters and notices the audience. The pirates get the audience to clap and laugh. Then, Captain Hook asks the audience whether they are his admirers, and then begins to sing ‘My Own Little Colony’.

After the song, the pirates spot that Peter Pan is back in Neverland. Captain Hook asks them to accelerate his plan to get fairy dust so that he can fly and take his revenge on Peter Pan. Simi tells us that Peter Pan cut off Captain Hook’s right hand and fed it to the crocodile, along with the handphone that was in the hand. Simi makes the sounds of a phone ringtone, which scares Captain Hook. The pirates think of the past, where their lives as pirates were easier. A phone rings, this time, it is not Simi. It is the crocodile! The pirates run for their lives.

Scene 4 Ting Tong Bell enters and calls the Lost Boys out. 6 of them come out, dressed in their various animal disguises. Ting Tong Bell tells them Peter is in danger and asks them to shoot down Wendy. They successfully do so and bring the fallen Wendy onto the stage.

Peter enters with John and Michael and announces he has found someone to tell them stories. Peter asks if they had seen Wendy who flew ahead of him. Ting Tong Bell tries to hide Wendy under a giant leaf. Peter asks to see what is behind Ting Tong Bell and discovers that Ting Tong Bell had told the Lost Boys to shoot down Wendy. Disappointed, Peter banishes Ting Tong Bell.

Peter and the Lost Boys try to save Wendy through their own version of CPR. Wendy wakes up and finds herself in Neverland. She asks if Peter had been taking care of all of them and Peter tells her that it’s not just the Lost Boys she has met. There are a lot more! He calls for the rest of the Lost Boys and they all come out to sing the song, ‘The Lost Boys’. In the song, the Lost Boys ask Wendy to be their pretend their mother. Wendy agrees to pretend to be their mother and show them motherly love.

After the song, the Lost Boys decide they should have a feast for their new mother. Peter sends them out to go hunting and then brings Wendy to go see real mermaids.

Scene 5 The Mermaid Lagoon. Peter brings Wendy to the Mermaid Lagoon and shows her a picture of the mermaids. Wendy comments that they are beautiful, but Peter warns her that they do not look very much like their pictures. Peter calls for the mermaids and 2 mermaids, Catfish and Flatfish, enter the stage by sliding in on two boards on wheels.

Catfish and Flatfish express their dislike of Wendy and how close she is to Peter. As Peter and Wendy are about to leave, Catfish and Flatfish try to pull Wendy into the water to drown her. Peter fends them off and the mermaids leave.

Wendy asks Peter about their relationship and for Peter to be the pretend father to the Lost Boys. With some persuasion, Peter agrees. Wendy then suggests that as pretend father and pretend mother, they should pretend to like each other. Peter wonders why they had to pretend to like each other since he likes Wendy - for real. Wendy and Peter sing the song, ‘Keep It Chill’.

After the song, Atas, one of the Lost Boys, enters to tell Peter that Towkay, another of the Lost Boys, has been captured by Captain Hook. They rush off to the Pirate Bay.

Scene 6 At the Pirate Bay. Simi and Daiji enter in a boat, together with a tied up Towkay. They plan to put Towkay on a rock and tie him to the tree, so that when the high tide comes, he will drown. Up on a rock, Peter pretends to be Captain Hook and orders them to release Towkay. Towkay escapes. Peter continues to have run with Simi and Daiji as he pretends to be Captain Hook asking them to do different types of dances.

Captain Hook enters and discovers Simi and Daiji dancing, and Towkay missing. Simi and Daiji explain that they received instructions from a voice that sounded like him. Captain Hook lures Peter Pan out and places his hook on Peter’s neck. Peter shouts for Towkay to bring Wendy to safety. Captain Hook orders Simi and Daiji to chase after them as he begins a sword fight with Peter Pan.

Captain Hook manages to injure Peter, which prevents Peter from flying away. Captain Hook ties Peter Pan to the tree on the rock as the high tide comes in, leaving Peter to drown as Captain Hook exits. Peter calls out for help, but there is no one there.

Act 2

Scene 7 At the Mermaid Lagoon. Act 2 opens with the song ‘By The Sea’ sung by Catfish, Flatfish and the little mermaids.

After the song, Catfish and Flatfish tell Peter that they saw what Captain Hook had done to him and saved him from drowning by bringing him back to the Mermaid Lagoon. Peter asks why he is tied up and the mermaids tell him it is to prevent him from floating back into the ocean. Wendy enters in search of Peter. Peter is relieved to see Wendy. Wendy tells the mermaids to untie Peter and let him go. The mermaids refuse. Wendy pulls out a mirror from her bag and points to them to mermaids. The mermaids, on seeing their own reflections, scream and run off. Wendy unties Peter and explains that she used the magic of reality against the mermaids. Peter and Wendy leave to join the Lost Boys.

Meanwhile, Captain Hook enters, having heard the exchange between Peter and the mermaids. Captain Hook regrets not killing Peter himself. Daiji enters, having chased a fairy all the way to the Mermaid Lagoon. The pirates hide and Ting Tong Bell enters, alone. Ting Tong Bell is sad that she is alone. Captain Hook reveals himself and convinces Ting Tong Bell to join forces with him so that Ting Tong Bell can show them the way to the secret Lost Boys hideout. They shake hands on it and Ting Tong Bell leads the pirates to the hideout.

What Happens in the Story? 20

Scene 8 The Lost Boys’ Hideout. Peter and Wendy return home to the Lost Boys. Peter thanks Wendy for saving his life and calls her a very good friend. Wendy does not seem to take to the term ‘friend’ but Peter does not know why. Wendy feeds the Lost Boys their emulsion and begins to tell them a bedtime story.

The bedtime story is one that Wendy makes up. It is about the De Sousa family in Singapore. The story goes that one day, while their parents were out, three siblings, Wendy, John and Michael, flew out of the window and came to Neverland where they had an adventure. One of the Lost Boys asked what happened to their parents. Wendy explains that their parents were very sad to find that their children were gone, but when the children flew back home, they were greeted with a great big hug.

Peter interrupts the story and says that not how he knows the story to end. In his version, after the children flew out, their parents had window grilles installed and there was another boy in the children’s bed to replace him. On hearing this story, John and Michael beg Wendy to go back home before their parents install window grilles. The Lost Boys want to follow them as well. Wendy agrees and they ask Peter for permission. Peter tells them the decision is theirs, but that they should know what they are signing up for. Peter and Wendy have very different views about growing up that they express in the next song, ‘Growing Up’.

After the song, Wendy and the Lost Boys prepare to go back home. Peter refuses to show them the way. Wendy decides they will find their own way home, but asks Peter to promise that he will continue to take his emulsion. Peter goes to sleep.

Scene 9 Outside the Lost Boys’ Hideout. Just as the Lost Boys and Wendy were on their way home, the pirates knock them out with darts and carry them all to the ship. In the mess, they lost Ting Tong Bell. Simi emerges from the Lost Boys’ hideout to report that Peter Pan is sleeping. Simi also shows Captain Hook the bottle of emulsion and a note that Wendy left for Peter to remind him to take it. Simi and Daiji ask how Captain Hook would like to kill Peter Pan and offer their suggestions, but Captain Hook has other ideas. He sings the next song, ‘Revenge is a Dish Best Served Shiok’.

After the song, Captain Hook asks for the bottle of emulsion and adds in three drops of snake venom that he got from the legendary Mama White Snake. Simi puts the bottle back into the hideout. Meanwhile, Ting Tong Bell, having heard all of this, sneezes. Captain Hook hears the sneeze and sends the pirates to investigate. Ting Tong Bell makes the handphone ringtone and Captain Hook runs off in fear.

Ting Tong Bell enters the hideout to wake Peter up, who reminds Ting Tong Bell that she is still banished. Ting Tong Bell explains what had happened and Peter decides they have to go and save Wendy and the Lost Boys. Before they go, Peter remembers to take his emulsion. Ting Tong Bell, knowing that it has been poisoned, snatches it from Peter and drinks it all. Her light grows faint and she collapses on the ground. Peter pleads for Ting Tong Bell to stay awake, and asks the audience to shout ‘I believe in fairies’. With the help of all the audience, Ting Tong Bell is revived and they go to the pirate ship.

Scene 10 The Pirate Ship. Captain Hook has the Lost Boys and Wendy captured. He says that he will also destroy everyone and everything he knows, starting with his girlfriend, Wendy. The ringtone of the crocodile is heard below the

ship. Captain Hook pushes Wendy into the water. She falls, but there is no splash. Captain Hook senses something wrong. He asks for Simi and Daiji to check when Peter and Ting Tong Bell fly in. Wendy manages to climb back up the ship as well. There is a big fight between the Lost Boys and the Pirates.

The Lost Boys manage to win most of the pirates, except Captain Hook, who Peter says he will take himself. They engage in a swordfight. Captain Hook almost falls off the ship into the crocodiles mouth, but says that he is not done yet. He takes out a bottle of fairy dust and attempts to fly away, but he is unable to think of enough wonderful thoughts to fly and ends up falling into the crocodile’s mouth.

Wendy thanks Peter and Ting Tong Bell for their help and attempts to steer them back home, but is unable to find her way out of Neverland. She asks Peter for help and Peter agrees to bring them home to Serangoon Gardens.

Scene 11 The De Sousa’s Apartment in Serangoon Gardens. Wendy, John and Michael return home much to the relief and delight of their parents. They tell their parents about their incredible adventure. Mr and Mrs De Sousa tells them that they have been so worried for the past week and they realised that nothing is more important than the three of them.

Peter, Ting Tong Bell and the Lost Boys join the De Sousas and Wendy asks if they can adopt all the Lost Boys. Mrs De Sousa is afraid that their real mothers might be upset and recognises some of their faces in lost children notices. She promises to reunite them with their parents but until then, they are allowed to stay with the De Sousas. The Lost Boys all run out to explore the rest of the house, followed by Ting Tong Bell and Mr and Mrs De Sousa.

Wendy thanks Peter for the wonderful adventure. Peter suggests that the adventure does not have to end, but Wendy says that she has a whole other adventure lined up for her. They sing ‘Goodbye’. Wendy gives Peter a goodbye kiss on the cheek and Peter leaves.

The chorus comes out and sings ‘Time Goes By’.

Scene 12 The De Sousa’s Apartment in Serangoon Gardens. Some time has passed and Peter and Ting Tong Bell have come back to visit Wendy. They try to wake her up from her sleep but another girl wakes up and greets him as ‘Uncle Peter’. She tells them that if they’re looking for her mother, she should be home soon.

Wendy enters. She is dressed in an air stewardess’s outfit and has grown old. Peter is in shock and asks what happened. Wendy tells them that it has been 30 years and that she has grown up. Peter says that she is not supposed to grow up and asks her why she had left her sense of adventure behind. Wendy tells them that she has been on a big adventure growing up, so much so that she is now a mother. The girl is actually her daughter, Jane.

Jane asks Peter if he can teach her to fly. Peter says that he will take her to Neverland where she can spend some time there before coming back to do all the things her mother is doing now. With a sprinkle of fairy dust and wonderful thoughts, they fly to Neverland.

They can usually be found splashing away at the Mermaid’s Lagoon.

Show Notes: Spoiler Alert!

This is an explanation of the play which talks about the plot and the story. If you only want to find out about the story only at the show, please skip this part!

In this section, we also provide notes below for those who would benefit from being prepared for some of the more dramatic or scary elements of the performance.

These are the Mermaids.

In this show, some of the actors will be attached to a harness with wires, and will be flying.

When an actor is flying, there is a crew member that will go up or down a ladder that is at the corner of the stage — this is a counter weight and allows the actors to fly.
