Knowledge Outcome What is Visual literacy? Why is it important to know about Visual
Literacy? Why bother to use visuals in instruction? What value do they add to the learning process? How can visuals be designed to influence student
learning? What are two general approaches that you may
use to teach visual literacy What are six types of visuals? What is an
example of each type? When could you use presentation software for
instruction? What are the qualities of an essential question?

Visual Literacy
The learned ability to interpret visual messages accurately
DECODING
Meaning what we see is analyzed
The learned ability to create visual messages accurately
ENCODING
Meaning to express, and communicate with others through visuals

DecodingTo interpret a text ,needs to be learned, not everyone “see’s” the same thing.
For young children this is a picture of a ride to school.
For a school bus driver a nightmare, because none of the kids are in their seats while the bus is moving.

The Importance of Visual Literacy
The world becomes increasingly more visual(video, television, computers etc.)
Some students learn better when visuals are involved.
Many schools all over the world develop visual programs for students, therefore we need to know them, because we need to teach them.

Why Add Visuals to Instructions?
To provide concrete referent for ideas
To make abstract ideas concrete
To motivate learners
To direct attention(with a visual pointer)
To repeat information in a different form
To help recall prior learning
To reduce learning effort (visuals can simplify information)

What value do visuals add to learning
By adding visuals to instructions the students can benefit from a more versatile lesson flow. The information provided by visuals imprints information differently, therefore it is remembered in a different way then a lecture alone.By creating visuals for presentation, the student learns to use different media like visuals to enhance their project.

Appeal
If we design Visuals using these design elements they will be appealing to the students.

Two General Approaches I Would Use to Teach Visual LiteracyI would use a “hands on”
approach. In my lessons I would use books, graphs, movie clips, pictures etc. to enhance my teachings
I also would let the kids work with visuals, try out different writing stiles, develop presentations, draw picture’s, make photographs, and maybe even video’s.

When can Presentation Software be used for Instructions
In general can Presentation Software be used at any time during a regular lesson. Power point can be used to enhance lectures, while teaching a subject. Combining visuals with a lesson will enhance the experience and further learning and understanding
Presentation Software can also be used to create a presentation by students in groups. This creating (encoding) of information and visuals also enhance previous learned knowledge or will aid by understanding a subject better.

What are the qualities of an essential question?
An essential question is a question that is not easily answered. It requires time and thought to answer it.They are challenging and not answered by someone else's thought. They do not have one right answer, but many. They should spark interest, and make one curious. They can be provocative, because there answers can be so versatile.
