Prevalence

• TBI is one of the major causes of death and disability in the U.S (CDC, 2017)

• 90% of TBI patients have visual-perceptual

dysfunction (Jacobson & Marcus, 2011)

• Veterans: 50% of those dx with TBI

reported visual complaints (Radomski et al., 2014)

TBI contributes to about 30% of injury deaths. 31 % have VP impairments 1 year post injury Veterans: Operation Iragi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom 10-20% TBI of those 50% reported visual complaints Prompted VA to modify standard of care that to include a vision assessment for everyone with a TBI (Scheiman, 2013)

Why is visual-perception so important?

70% of all sensory processing in the cerebral cortex is directly affected by information

coming from the 2 eyes (Hulse & Dudley, 2010)

It is our dominant sense and tends to override other senses. 6 of the 12 cranial nerves help to coordinate our vision. Sensory input = gather information (peripheral nervous system function) Integration = process & interpret sensory input (central nervous system function) Motor output = response by muscles and glands (peripheral nervous system function)

An injury to the brain WILL have an impact on the visual system regardless of where the legion exists in the brain

Over 1,900,000 eye nerve fibers. 70% of sensory fibers in the body. Every lobe of the cerebral cortex is involved in processing of visual information. Huge amount of sensory info is received through the visual system. Therefore, any brain injury will result in visual dysfunction.

• fatigue with higher level cognitive tasks, including multi-tasking • fatigue with physical activity • Eye strain / fatigue • Headache or migraine • Malaise / nausea • Disequilibrium, dizziness, and possible vertigo • Increased sensitivity to motion of visual stimuli (scrolling text, crowded streets, etc. )
