The Value of a Picture

2

A man with a broom is standing sideways on the wall of a brownish-orange building. There are potted trees and plants near by. Several windows can be seen – one at street level, one approximately 6 feet from the ground the other at ten feet. Each of the windows are guarded by black wrought-iron fencing. A Lamp post is seen directly behind the horizontal man.

A brief history of business charting

Report Oriented – The only thing that mattered up to the year 2000. Standard business graphics for paper (later simple HTML) documents. Static or limited interaction.

Examples: Office 2000, Crystal Reports Dashboarding – Starting in 2001 with Web 1.0 and Flash. Moderate

interaction (animation, simple pan) – new graphics like gauges, stop lights. Designed for Web consumption of information that changes relatively frequently but not very data dense.

Examples: Xcelsius, Flex. Visualization – Starting in late 2000’s with Web2.0 and HTML5 and more

powerful versions of FLEX. Key concepts: HIGHLY interactive (Sliders, fast tooltips,…) Infographic Style (FlowingData and Visual.ly) Data Exploration Capabilities Mobile Aware
