Visually Communicating Fashion DesignsDVC 2.1 Part ALesley PearceAuckland UniversityStep ups from level 1AS91063 1.30 Produce freehand sketches that communicate design ideas 3 credits External AS913372.30Use visual communication techniques to generate design ideas 3 credits External Level 2 step ups1.30Related 2D/3D freehand sketchingNo annotation2.30Using visual communication techniques: sketching, rendering, modelling, collage, overlays, digital mediaFunctional and aesthetic qualitiesIt is about telling a story generating design ideasLevel 2Focuses on visual communication through using sketching skills..I would be encouraging use of related sketches. to show qualities of the design..and therefore moving away from the practise of a single sketch on page with heaps of annotation!!

2Visual communication: Learning objectiveRefers to the effective communication and presentation of design ideas using modelling and graphic design techniques. Students learn to communicate and present their design ideas and information by applying 2D and 3D drawing techniques such as sketching, rendering, digital, annotations, instrumental, templates, collage, overlays. High quality visual techniques and knowledge that communicates a story to an audience the intent of the design.http://www.techlink.org.nz/curriculum-support/Linked to indicators of progression3Teachers teachHow to appreciate aesthetic and physical characteristics of a designVisual communication techniquesSkills in using different media to explore design ideasSkills in telling a story through visual communicationDivergent design possibilitiesThrough looking at how other designers communicate their ideas

Students need toCommunicate their design ideas using techniques that explore both identifiable aesthetic and functional details of a designApply techniques such as sketching, modelling, rendering, collage, overlays and digital mediaReflect on and extend divergent design possibilitiesDiscussAesthetic and physical characteristics of a design. How do you recognise them in fashion/textile designs?AestheticsAesthetic qualities may include but are not limited to:colourtonetexturepatternshapebalancesurface finish FunctionFunctional qualities may include but are not limited to:operation eg movement and ergonomic interfaceconstruction eg material and assemblysize, scale, and proportion

Aesthetics or function or both?Is this sketch showing aesthetics and/or function? DiscussHint can you see the details, how it goes together or just the overall design?9

What is being visually communicated?Think in terms of: Aesthetics and function.Target market how is this shown? Occasion? What do the accessories communicate?Does the detail show aspects of techniques/construction?How is 3D communicated?Etc etc10

What is being visually communicated here?Discuss in groups. Report back.11

And here? What is being communicated here?12

What is being visually communicated through the use of a toile?http://www.gerritrietveldacademie.nl/project/shanghai-gesture13

What is this story board visually communicating?A storyboard that clearly communicates visually the designing and construction of a collar.15

Final design what does the photograph visually communicate?Photography is a fashion technique to communicate visually the designers intent, evoking a mode or theme or even an emotion. If students are to use photography to capture their design thinking in 3D then the skill of photography needs to be taught.

A flat sketch shows the full front or full back of a design Investigate a dressmaking paper pattern - you'll see two different, but equally important types of sketches at work. On the back of the envelope, schematic drawings show the flat outline of the garment, with style lines and construction details. In contrast, the more dynamic fashion illustrations on the envelope front depict the garment or ensemble on a body (typically an elongated, slender one), and give the illusion of three-dimensional form and movement.

17Visual communication and idea generationIt is about using techniques to explore ideas, e.g.starting pointsabstraction conceptual modelsadapting existing products

http://yangware.wordpress.com/category/experimental-fashion-fashion/18How can students show evidence that they can use a given or find a starting point and re-interpret that as an idea of their own?

Dont throw away the scribbles, crumpled paper, interpretative drawings from life and/or inspirational research which comes beforethe neatly drawn idea

Celebrate the first ideas? What techniques have been used?http://yangware.wordpress.com/category/experimental-fashion-fashion/

i was listening to a really funky swing song and somehow ended up sketching these sillies...Where do Ideas come from?http://castle-fashion.blogspot.co.nz/2011/01/scribble-scribble.html21

Where do ideas come from? Paper folding.http://chantellefashion.blogspot.co.nz/2012/01/fashion-sketch-book-pages-of-my-work.html22

Find a starting point and re-interpret that as an idea of your ownhttp://diy-couture.co.uk/designingthecollection.html23Aim for excellenceGenerate ideas to become new starting points re-generate, re-combine, overlay, re-mix, re-invent and generate new ideas

greater attention to the details being seen as design possibilities and a range of ideas that are different (no pre-determining the final outcome with the first sketch!Assessment schedule from NZQA websiteWell worth discussing with students.27Technique: Fashion illustrations

A dimensional sketch will show the depth and different angles of a designThe more dynamic fashion illustrations on the envelope front depict the garment or ensemble on a body (typically an elongated, slender one), and give the illusion of three-dimensional form and movement.

28Pencil Sketching

The ultimate goal of your sketch is to provide you and the audience, the feel of how the garment will look like when worn. This gives the sketch visual impact.

Does this sketch show function? What could have been added to increase the viewers understanding of how the skirt works?31

A designesr sketche can tell you a lot more than the average picture34Essential to know howto draw fabric to draw the folds of clothingto use lighting effectsTo shade to create depthto use colours and different techniques in reflecting the movements and the poses of the modelAll will enhance the quality of the sketch and gives a 3 dimensional illustrations

enhances the visual impact, by adding colors, lighting effects, folds, and all the drawing techniques to the model35AchievementAchievement with MeritAchievement with Excellence

Use visual communication techniques to generate design ideas.Use visual communication techniques skilfully to generate design ideas.Skilfully means clarity of design thinking.Use visual communication techniques effectively to generate design ideas.Effectively means clarity and depth of design thinking.

This involves using techniques to explore the functional and aesthetic qualities of the design to generate design possibilities.

The experimentation/manipulation of the functional and aesthetic qualities of design ideas is shown through visual means.

A number of design ideas are produced that show identifiable functional and aesthetic qualities. This involves using techniques to explore in detail the functional and aesthetic qualities of the design to generate divergent design possibilities.Divergent means different.

The experimentation/manipulation of the functional and aesthetic qualities of design ideas is shown with clarity of design thinking through well-articulated visual means.

A variety of different design ideas are produced, through an in-depth exploration of design qualities.

This involves using techniques to comprehensively explore the functional and aesthetic qualities of the design to reflect on and extend divergent design possibilities. Comprehensively means explored and extended to show detail.Extend means a wide-ranging examination of design possibilities.

The integrated experimentation/manipulation of the functional and aesthetic qualities of design ideas is shown with clarity and a depth of design understanding through well-articulated visual means.

A wide variety of different design ideas are produced, Ideas are explored and extended to show detailed design qualities.
