Vitafoods Europe is a 3-days event where the nutraceutical supply chain comes together todo business. It takes place once a year in May in Geneva (Switzerland)

The trade show providers visitors the chance to scout for ingredients, raw materials, foodsupplements as well as services to support their business

§ Collagen was one of the buzzwords at this year’s Vitafoods Europe. We have seen a rise of collagen-containing food supplements for health and beauty, with many brands exploring innovative delivery formats including soft chews and gummies.

§ Another big trend was algae. They could be found as raw materials, algae derived isolated compounds (Astaxanthin e.g. AstaZine™ from BGG (Switzerland), or algae oil extracts e.g. Omegavie® DHA 650 algae from Polaris (France). An interesting final product containing blue-green microalgae was Smart Chimp (France), a spirulina-based beverage with a natural blue color which is now available in three additional flavors (original, pear and raspberry).

§ The interest in grasses also seems to be increasing. These are available in powder formats, e.g. Purasana Super Green Grass juice powder mix from Purasana (Belgium), but also as drinks. Another interesting brand for whole food powders was a blend of fruit and vegetables which, when mixed with water, provides the recommended serving of fruit or vegetables in a convenient format (TruServ™ organic from FutureCeuticals, USA).

§ Natural sources for vitamins and minerals are also gaining more and more importance.§ Other interesting ingredients which are on the rise are fermented extracts such as Extracyan® (Ferlux, France), a fermented

bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus L.) extract standardized to cateco-anthocyanidins which improves visual acuity; or an EU novel food approved vegetarian glucosamine branded product - GlucosaGreenDF™ (TSI Health Sciences Ltd, UK) - produced using a direct fermentation process.

§ The use of confectionary was another big trend. Brands are using healthy confectioneries to drive innovation. This was already observed last year but to a lesser extent. Brands are exploring delivery forms such as chocolates, jelly sticks, and gummies to bring innovation to their products. We also found other innovative food supplement formats in this segment such as popping sticks or ice pops that deliver multivitamins.

§ Sustainability was also showcased across the show. Consumers are demanding more transparency within products, searching for brands that they can trust and that have an environmentally friendly approach and consider animal welfare. We saw a steady rise of vegetable proteins, not only pea protein (such as e.g. Empro® E 86 HV from Emsland-Stärke GmbH), but also new vegetable protein concentrates like Luzixeen (Luzerne Recherche Developement), an innovative EU Novel Food ingredient from alfalfa leaf.

§ Continuing an ongoing trend, “natural” and “organic” were also words often found in ingredients and products. § Brands are also investing more in clinical research to support the health benefits of their products.§ Hemp products are gaining more and more interest in the food arena, although the regulatory situation of CBD containing

products is not yet solved. Extracts of Cannabis sativa L. in which cannabidiol (CBD) levels are not higher than the CBD levels in the source Cannabis sativa L. are novel in food. Hemp oil (without CBD) obtained by cold-pressing the seeds or other plant parts does not require pre-market authorization as hemp oil was consumed in the EU to a significant degree before 1997.

§ As already noticeable in the last editions, sports nutrition continues to move mainstream. Sport nutrition is no longer a niche and brands are actively exploring this segment with cutting edge sports nutrition and functional ingredient solutions deliveringinnovative, on-the-go functional foods and beverages. An example for a branded ingredient in this segment is Zynamite® from Nektium Pharma (Spain), which is a clean-label replacement for caffeine to enhance exercise capacity and improve physical and mental performance without negative side effects.
