Vitale Family HomeABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition

The goal was to provide a very special home to a very special family with a child who suffers from serious medical problems.

The challenge was to build it within one week!

The extreme energy-efficiency would keep energy costs as low as possible for the family as they deal with mounting medical bills. The superb indoor air quality would provide a hospital-comparable environment for the child.

This was the first time the Extreme Makeover Home Edition program built above grade ICF.

In order to meet the overall construction deadline, the ICF walls had to be installed literally overnight and the following morning.

To help accomplish this, an elaborate system of pony walls combined with floor trusses served to brace the 5-1/2 foot ICF frost wall foundation.

This eliminated the need to install and remove braces on much of the project.

Crews were actually framing the inside of the home as the exterior ICF walls were being installed.

12,000 PSI concrete with Polar Set additive was used to achieve a 4 hour concrete cure time.

This allowed the foundation backfilling to take place while the main level was being poured the next morning.

This extreme project proved just how fast and efficient ICF construction can be.

Ty Pennington introduced millions of viewers to ICFs when the Vitale Family episode aired December 9th, 2008.
