DearReader,

Evenattheriskofmayberepeatingmyself,Iwouldliketostate:2016wasayearthatgaveustheimpressionofhavingpassedbymuchfasterthanmostinrecenttimes.Thisim-pressioncomesperhapsfromthetwobigeventsthatkeptusonthegoduringthisyear:firstlyour40thanniversaryeventinJune,andthentheKshowinOctober.Naturally,wealsowereoccupiedwithsmalleroccasionsandwiththeday-to-daybusiness–ourtimetablesbeingbrimfulwithappointments.

Theverypleasingcourseofbusinessinrecentyearsandtheheavilyincreasingdemandforourproductshavecontin-uedintheyear2016.Andagain,wehadtofacethenecessitytocarryoutextensionsonnumerousofourproductionfacili-ties.Justtonamesomeexamples,wehadtoextendthreeofourAustrianfactories,andalsotheHungarianplant.Wenowlookforwardtocontinuingourbuildingactivitiesunabatedlyinthecomingyear.Overandoveragain,wefindourselvesinthefortunatepositiontobeallowedtoadaptourproductioncapacitiestotherisendemandofourcustomers.

Asthisyeardrawstoaclosewehavetheopportunitytoreviewandalsolookahead–andbeyondthe2017horizon.Generally,weexpectsimilargrowthinthecomingyearstothatachievedduringthepastfewyears.Nevertheless,somerecentworldwideexistingdevelopments–thatwewillnotlosetrackof–areabitthought-provoking.Especiallysomemovementscomingfromtherightaswellasfromtheleftthattendtoraisetradebarriers.Asthenamesuggests:“barriers”wouldmeanastrikingdisadvantageforus,becauseweareagloballyactivecompany.Oneofourdeclaredprinciples,saying“thinkingglobal,actinglocal”,becomesevenmoreimportantinthiscon-text.Inthisspirit–ashashappenedbeforesooften–wehaveunderlinedourpreparednessfor“globalization”byestablishingnewsubsidiaries.In2016wehavesetupoursalesandservicesubsidiariesinSlovakiaandinSouthKorea.

Ourexpectationsarenotonlybasedonourworldwideori-entation,butnaturallyalsoonourinnovativeproducts.Gearedtooursloganbe smart,wewillcontinuetofurtheradvanceourinitiativesanddevelopmentsinthefieldofIndustry 4.0.Fromatechnologicalpointofview,itisvitalforustobeoneoftheleadingforces;thereforeweentertheyearthatliesaheadofuswithmuchinnovativedrive.Thisinnovativeimpulseisdrivenbycreativityandtherespectiveworkenthusiasm.Beingawarethatthisthingshappeneverydayanew,atthispointIwouldliketothankallouremployeesandbusinesspartners:fortheirstrongcommitmentandthisexcellentyear2016.

productionwithanautomationsystem.Forthisreason,theycarefullystudiedtheautomationequipmentofafewrenownedcompaniesthatareactiveinthismarket.

Inthebeginning,JaegerPowayintendedtoadoptsomesix-axisservorobotsfortheirautomationneedsinShenzhen.ButaftertheJaegerPowaymanagementhadcomprehensivelyconsidered–amongstotherfactors–suchveryimportantfactorslikethedifferentfootprintsofdifferentautomationsystems,ofcoursetheoperatorfriendliness,andalsothespecificachievablecycletime,JaegerPowayeventuallyselectedtheW843servorobotmodelfromtheWITTMANNGroupastheirautomationequipment.

An efficient solution

Beforethiswasinstalled,thecycletimesummedupto108seconds.TheoperationofoneinjectionmoldingmachinerunningatJaegerPowayre-quiredtwoworkerseveryshift.Oneoftheworkershadtoputawireintoagripperthatfixedtheinsert,checkthefinishedproducts,cutoffsprues,andtakethegripperwiththefinishedpartoutofthemachine.Theotherworkerputtheinsertfilledpartgripperintotheinjectionmoldingmachineandtookoutthefinishedproductsfromthegripper.JaegerPowayrantwoshiftsaday.Asacon-sequence,twoinjectionmoldingmachinesusedtoneedeightworkersaday.Astheweightofthegripper–includ-ingtheinsertedwire–wasabout15kg,handlingthegrip-

persalongertimecouldbecomeanexhaustingactivi-tyfortheoperators.Mostoftheproductionemployeesonlyreluctantlyacceptedthisjob.

WITTMANNinstalledaW843robotfortheautoma-tionoftwo100-toninjectionmoldingmachines.ThisautomationsystemhasbeenelaboratelyoptimizedbytheautomationprofessionalsofWITTMANN.Asaresult,theproductioncyclehasbecomesignificantlyshorterthanitwasbefore:nowitisonly84seconds.Now,twoinjectionmoldingmachinesneedonlyfourworkersaday.Therobotstakeovertheheavyphysicallabor,whichwasundertakenmanuallybefore,andtheyguaranteesmoothproductionrunsaround-the-clock.

Normally,arobotatJaegerPowayisoperatingattwoinjectionmoldingmachines,andbothareproducingparts.Whileoneofthemachinesispreparedfortheproductionofotherparts,orwhileitismaintained,therobotcanbesetveryeasilytoserviceexclusivelythestillrunningmachinebyapplyingonlyafewsimpleswitch-overs.Therefore,theoverallproduc-tioncapacitycanberaisedsignifi-cantly.

Allinall,WITTMANNautoma-tionraisesproductivity,reducesthescraprate,andlowersenergy

consumption.Itshigh-qualityadvancedequipmentandtheconsiderateandcomprehensivetechnicalsupportarethefundamentalreasonswhycustomers,includingJaegerPoway,turntotheWITTMANNGroup.•

Temperature Control

TemperaturecontrollerswithdirectcoolingfromWITTMANNcanoperateattemperaturesofupto120°Candareusedwhereverahighcooling

performanceisrequired.Toachieveahighcoolingper-formance,thecoolingwaterisnotusedindirectly,flowingthroughacoolingcoil,asisthenormalpractice,butthewaterinletisconnecteddi-rectlytotheheatexchanger.

Consequently,theoperat-ingtemperatureoftheappli-ancedependsindirectlyonthewaterinletpressure.

Previously,theminimuminletpressure–2baronthevaporpressurecurveshownbelow–andthehighestper-missibletemperatureof120°Cwerelinkedintemperaturecontrollerswithdirectcool-inglaidoutfor120°C.Theconsequencewasthattheseappliancescouldnotbeop-eratedatawaterinletpres-surebelowthatminimum.Insuchcases,thepressuresettinghadtobeadjustedtotheactualconditionsma-nuallyviatheappliance’sdisplay.

New software features offer added safety

New(oroverworked)softwarefortheWITT-MANNTEMPRObasicC120appliancesmeansthatthesystempressure(waterinletpressure)ismea-suredcontinuously,andamaximumtemperaturelimitissetautomatically.Iftheoperatorshouldattempttosetthemaximumtemperaturehigherthanthecalculatedmaximumtemperaturesetting,theLEDsetvaluedisplayflashesandissuesawarning.Thisclearlyindicatesthatanincreaseofthesetmaximumtemperatureisnotpos-

sibleforsafetyreasons,asthewaterinletpressureistoolow.Atthebottomofthescale,aminimumpressureof1barisfixedinordertopreventcavitationsinsidethe

pumpcase.Thesecondnewsoftware

featureofTEMPRObasicC120alsoservestoim-proveoccupationalsafety.Toensurethesafeopeningofthemagnetvalve,afixedmaximumdifferentialpres-suremustnotbeexceeded.Thereforethetemperaturecontrollersoftwareisnowprogrammedforpressurereductionat6barinordertoprotectthefunctionalityofthemagnetvalve.

Finally,anotherfeaturehasbeenaddedinordertoimproveventingoftheap-plianceduringtheheatingphase.Duetolonghosesanddeflectionsinsidethemold,airmaybetrappedinthetemperaturecontrolcircuit,andthismayleadtosubstantialcostsforrepairs.Airbubblesinsidethesystemmaycausedryrunninginsidethepumpcase,whichmayacceler-atethewearandtearofthemechanicalsealandthuscauseexposureoftheheatingelement.ThenewTEMPROsoftwareensuresacyclicalopeningofthecoolingmagnetvalvedur-ingtheappliance’sheating

phaseinordertoreleasethetrappedairfromthesystem.Thisfeaturenotonlypreventspotentialcostsforrepairs,butalsoprovidesamoreeffectiveheattransfertothemold.

Allinall,andthankstothesenewsoftwarefeatures,theTEMPRObasicC120temperaturecontrollernowof-fersconsiderableimprovementsinproductionsafety.•

Today,brothersandbusinesspartnersScottandSteveTassinariandtheircompany,MotoTassinari,arethelead-ingglobalproducersofreedvalvesandotherpartssuchasintakemanifoldsforthe2-strokeengineaftermarket.MotoTassinarirecentlymovedintoagleamingnewfacilityinWestLebanonandoutfitteditwiththreebrandnewWITT-MANNBATTENFELDEcoPowerall-electricmoldingmachines.

Humble beginnings

TheideaforabettervalvecamefromSteveTassinari,whoatthetimewasworkingasamechanicontheSuzukiracingteam.“Weweretoldtouseexistingparts,butIreal-izedIcoulddevelopabetterreedvalve”,hesays.Heusedhisdesignonhisownbikes,andsawbetteroverallper-formanceincludingbetterenginetiming,higherhorsepow-er,andbetteracceleration.“Andthat’sprettymuchevery-thingyouneedtogetanedgeinracing;that,combinedwith

riderskillsareparamounttowinningperformance”,hesays.SteveandhisbrotherScotttooktheirnewideaandin1995beganmakingtheirownvalvesoutofaluminum.Theysold1,100aluminum-machinedvalvestheirfirstyearinbusiness,butitwasnotaprofitableventure.“Theprocesswasveryexpensive,andweusedanoutsideassemblyhouseandhadqualityissues”,Scottsays.“Westoodbehindeveryvalvewesold,butwedidn’tmakeanymoney.”

Afterworkinglonghourstryingtoperfecttheirdesign,thebrothersswitchedfromaluminumtoplasticforthevalvesthenextyear,butstillhadissues.Theirrubberover-moldeddesignhaddelaminatingproblems,andonceagaintheyhadtoswitchvendors.

ScottTassinari:“Wesoldalotofthesevalves–over$600,000worth–andhadtomakegoodonallofthemaftertheyfailed.Theindustrylovedourdesignsandsawbetterperformance,butthepartswouldn’tlast.Wedecidedtogobacktothedrawingboardtoreallycreateaproductthatwouldworkandsurvivetheharshenvironmentofthe2-strokemotorcycleengine.”

Thebrotherscamebackwithanewly-designedvalve,theV-Force2,andtheperformancewasvastlyimproved.Then,in2003,eightyearsafterstartingthecompany,thenext-generationvalvewasintroduced,theV-Force3.Thistime,

Thefourthquarterof2013sawthecompanymoveintonewpremises,astructureprovidingsome35,000squarefeetoffloorspace.Early2016sawthisbuildingextendedto52,000squarefeet.“This”,saysHarrison,“allowsforfurthergrowththroughthesupportanddevelopmentofourcur-rentcustomerbaseandgivesusthecapacitytoattractandsupportadditional,newcus-tomers.”ThefurtherexpansionassistsinrealizingtheLineartargetofdrivingturnoveroverthe£10millionmark.

Harrisonsays:“Aclosefocusoneveryaspectofourmanufac-turinglifehasbeentheprincipalfactorresponsiblefortheup-swinginproductivityoverthepastthreeyears.Everyfacethascomeunderthemicroscopeandnoaspectofthecompany’stool-ingandplasticsprocessinghasbeenuntouchedinacampaigntooptimizemanufacturingef-ficiency.”

WITTMANNGroup’sbu-sinessactivitiesinSlovakia,itwasanobviousdecisiontointensifyactivitiesinthatmarket–previouslyhandledbyWITTMANNBATTENFELDCZ,Pisek–byopeningaseparatesub-sidiaryinTrenčin/Slovakia.

JurajMajerský,aSalesRepresentativefromWITT-MANNBATTENFELDCZwithmanyyearsofexperienceistheManagingDirectorinchargeofthenewsubsidiaryandhewillbesupportedbyMichalSlabaofWITTMANNBATTEN-FELDCZ.
