IN THE News

2008 ended off with a successful year-end dinner cum staff retreat and launch of the

Staff Wellness Programme @ Xingnan at the Sofitel Hotel in Johor. Thanks to the efforts

of Mdm Juhariyah and her team of SWC members 2008.

This year, in line with Xingnan’s focus on staff well-being, the SWC has planned a range

of activities with the objective of enhancing the physical, mental and emotional health of

our staff. For the CNY celebrations, the SWC had organized a staff eat-together session

to celebrate the occasion. A work-life balance talk was also organized and teachers

benefited from the light-hearted and engaging session. Staff are also given birthday gifts

with heartfelt wishes. To remind the staff to live healthily, the SWC also has monthly

fruit distribution.

We will be launching the Xingnan Family Day on 30 May 2009 with a Bowling Carnival

which will be held at the Civil Service Club at the Hilltops. The SWC will continue to bring

more exciting and interesting activities in the months to come.

Highlights

This is where it all began….

pg4Twinning Programme to Suzhou China2009

Dearest pupils, parents and readers,

I am elated to be able to communicate with you through this newsletter once again. You can see that our newsletter has taken on a new look with a broader coverage to include feedback from pupils and participation of parents in school organized workshops.

Many of you would have heard about Ministry of Education’s decision to accept the recommendations of the Primary Education Review and Implementation (PERI) Committee, chaired by Ms Grace Fu, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of National Development and Ministry of Education, to enhance the quality of primary education. The proposed changes to primary education seek to ensure that our young are equipped

not just with content knowledge, but also with the necessary skills and values to thrive in a fast-changing and globalised future. They build on the strengths of our current system and seek to raise primary education to a new level. (For more details on recommendations by PERI, visit http://www.moe.gov.sg/initiatives/peri/) This is good news for all of us as we can foresee the many exciting changes that are going to take place in the primary education arena in the years to come.

The proposed changes recommended by PERI serve as an affirmation of Xingnan’s philosophy which advocates providing a balanced education and a supportive environment (that excites the mind, builds character and enhances well-being) to help every Xingnanian reach his/her highest potential. Some of these recommendations have already taken place at Xingnan. For example, since 2007, Xingnan had already started to include modules of Performing Arts for Primary 1 and Primary 2 pupils. As we work towards implementing PERI’s recommendations, Xingnan firmly believes that parents and other stakeholders can be active partners in this journey.

I have shared with pupils and encouraged them to adopt the “ERA” approach to learning. It is important that as pupils participate in any programme or activity, they should focus on meeting its objectives and not go through the activity mindlessly. Pupils can only EXPERIENCE it fully by being active listeners, engaged learners and caring team players. At the same time, pupils need to

enjoy the activity so that they reap maximum benefits from it. Pupils should also REFLECT on their learning experiences through active self-questioning. They should constantly ask themselves questions like: Have I achieved the objectives of the activity? What are the areas that I have done well in? What are some areas I need improvement on? Self-questioning stimulates thinking and this, in turn, will allow them to gain knowledge from the activities they have participated in. Finally, pupils need to ACT on their experiences and reflection. They should apply the knowledge they have acquired to their daily lives and other new situations. When they constantly practise “ERA”, they will master the art of making good use of their strengths and avoid repeating the same mistakes. If pupils apply the ERA approach conscientiously, I strongly believe that they will develop “the Passion to Learn” as espoused by Xingnan’s vision.

On an ending note, the school welcomes the views of parents and we know that we can count on your constructive feedback and ideas. The school will provide you with regular updates and engage you in dialogues as and when necessary so that we can help you keep abreast of what is happening in Xingnan and the education landscape at large. This newsletter is one such avenue. As the saying goes, when parents and schools work together, our children are the winners! Let us all work hand in hand for the betterment of our pupils.
