After well-deserved vacations, the VIVA MÉXICO team returns with renewed enthusiasm. In this first issue of the year, we address one of the most important topics and of greatest relevance to the country’s revenue: business and tradeshow tourism. Also known as convention tourism and/or meetings tourism, this outstanding field for the country’s economy also servers as an important platform for the promotion of the main Mexican destinations.In this issue, we focus on the three main cities in the country and their modern facilities for the development of business tourism that, year after year, bring thousands of visitors of national and international relevance. Expo Guadalajara in Jalisco; Banamex Center in México City, and Cintermex in Monterrey, as well as some of the most important tradeshows and yearly summits hosted there, all included in this issue.

I f something can describe business tourism, it is the great effect it has on the revenues in México. It is definitely a multiplying factor for business activities and

a clear way to increase hotel occupancy in the main cities in the country. Convention tourism has become a profitable business, as in addition to the formality surrounding these meetings, it also offers the chance to know the destinations and carry out all kinds of recreational activities.

Currently, México has the infrastructure to host congresses, conventions, fairs, trade shows and incentive trips that has been growing exponentially in the last few years. In 2000, for example, there were 27 facilities for congresses and conventions, and this figure increased to 71 in 2011, covering an area of 3.6 square miles (59% more than what was available in 2003.) Similarly, today there are 56 Congress and Visitors Offices, more than double of what there was in the year 2000. This has prompted the creation of more than 495 thousand hotel rooms with the facilities and features necessary to receive visitors attending meetings.

With all of this, México is a country prepared to compete internationally in the business tourism field, with México City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey rising to the fore by meeting the quality standards sought after by both organizers and attendees of these great events, held generally in a yearly basis.

S i algo caracteriza al turismo de negocios y convenciones es el gran impacto que genera en la derrama económica del país. Este turismo se ha

convertido en una actividad altamente productiva, pues además de englobar este tipo de encuentros, representa también la posibilidad de conocer los destinos y realizar todo tipo de actividades de esparcimiento.Actualmente México cuenta con una infraestructura para albergar congresos, convenciones, ferias, exposiciones y viajes de incentivos que ha ido creciendo de manera exponencial en los últimos años. En el 2000, por ejemplo, se contaba con 27 recintos para congresos y convenciones; en el 2011 la cifra ascendió a 71 con una oferta de 870 mil metros cuadraros de área de exposición (59% más de lo que se tenía en el 2003). De igual manera, hoy día existen 56 Oficinas de Congresos y Visitantes, más del doble de las que se tenían en el año 2000.Con todo esto, México es un país preparado para competir a nivel internacional en el segmento de turismo de negocios, destacando a la Ciudad de México, Guadalajara y Monterrey, que cumplen con los estándares de calidad buscados tanto por los organizadores como por los asistentes a estos magnos eventos, que por lo regular son de talla anual.

- In 2010 there were 197,400 meetings in México, where 23 million participants mingled and generated 24.2 million room-nights.- Summits in México represent 1.43% of the Gross Domestic Product. - The total purchase and demand represents 18% of the total demand for travel and tourism in the country.- Meetings tourism creates a direct expenditure (sales and purchases) of 18,120 million American dollars in the national economy, 51% of which are spent in tourism and the rest of the revenue in other economic items. - Indirectly, it creates another additional 14,381 million dollars, resulting in total revenues equal to 32.5 billion dollars spread between direct (56%) and indirect (44%) effects.

- En el 2010 se llevaron a cabo 197,400 reuniones en México, en donde interactuaron 23 millones de participantes y generaron 24.2 millones de habitaciones-noche.- Las reuniones en México aportan el 1.43% al Producto Interno Bruto. - El total de consumos y demanda equivale al 18% de la demanda total por viajes y turismo del país.- El turismo de reuniones genera un gasto directo (ventas y consumos) por 18,120 millones de dólares americanos en la economía nacional, de los cuales 51% se gasta en conceptos turísticos y el resto de la derrama es en otros sectores de la economía. - De manera indirecta genera otros 14,381 millones de dólares adicionales, resultando en una derrama total por 32.5 mil millones de dólares entre efectos directos (56%) e indirectos (44%). *S

Sectur Drives Promotion of the Mayan world

As part of their actions to drive the Mayan World Program, the Federal Secretariat of Tourism is strengthening the promotion of the Mexican Southeast destinations, which in 2012 will receive more than 52 million visitors, creating revenue higher than 270 billion pesos.

Como parte de las acciones para impulsar el Programa Mundo Maya, la Secretaría de Turismo del Gobierno Federal fortalecerá las tareas de promoción de los destinos del sureste mexicano, que tendrán en 2012 una afluencia de más de 52 millones de visitantes, quienes dejarán una derrama económica superior a los 270 mil millones de pesos.

The Secretariat of Tourism reported that at the end of last year, the arrival of for-eign visitors coming into our country by air was of 799 thousand 225 people, a figure that meant an increase of 6.7 percent against the same period in 2010.

La Secretaría de Turismo informó que hacia finales del año pasado, la llegada de visitantes extranjeros que ingresaron a nuestro país vía aérea fue de 799 mil 225 personas, cifra que representó un aumento de 6.7 por ciento, en comparación con el mismo periodo del 2010.

The group of the 20 most devel-oped countries in the world (G-20) recognized México’s leadership in the international tourism field and gave the Secretary of Tour-ism, Gloria Guevara Manzo, the responsibility of organizing in our country the next T-20 sum-mit, a gathering of tourism min-isters from the countries that form part of this international group, to be held in Mérida, Yucatán, on May 14th-16th.

El Grupo de los 20 países más desarrollados del mundo (G-20) reconoció el liderazgo de México en la actividad turística internacional y otorgó a la Secretaria de Turismo, Gloria Guevara Manzo, la responsabilidad de organizar en nuestro país la próxima reunión del T-20, encuentro de ministros de turismo de los países que integran este grupo de naciones, la cual se realizará en Mérida, Yucatán, del 14 al 16 de mayo.

E l Secretario de Salud, Salomón Chertorivski Woldenberg, acompañado de la embajadora del Reino Unido en

México, Anne Macgregor, presidió la ceremonia en la que el Presidente de la Comisión Nacional de Bioética, Manuel Ruiz de Chávez, recibió el reconocimiento como Fellowship del Colegio Real de Médicos del Reino Unido. En la ceremonia que se llevó a cabo en la Embajada del Reino Unido en México, el Secretario de Salud resaltó la trascendencia de la distinción, al ser el primer mexicano y el sexto en Latinoamérica en obtenerla.

Chertorivski Woldenberg señaló que el Presidente de la Comisión Nacional de Bioética ha retribuido la inversión que significó esa formación, mediante el fomento de la colaboración científica y académica entre Gran Bretaña y México.La práctica médica mexicana es de calidad internacional, por lo que seguramente en el futuro habrá más médicos mexicanos que obtengan este título, dijo, y felicitó al doctor Manuel Ruiz de Chávez por su destacada trayectoria médica.
