While Panajachel also has lots of restaurants and activities, the noise, traf- fic and street sellers will make you feel the stress of being in a big city. Choosing a more relaxed place seems logical. Other villages can be quiet as well, maybe a little bit too quiet... Only Panajachel, San Pedro and San Marcos can of- fer somewhat of a night- life. Other villages are great to visit, but a little too sleepy to spend many days there. So, while staying in San Pedro, don’t be shy to take a lancha to Santiago, where you can see the life of a big town. Santiago, with its 40 thousands inhabitants, is the biggest town around lake Atit- lan. A 30 minute boat ride leaving from the “oth- er dock”, aka the Santiago dock, by La Piscina, will bring you there as if you were on a cruise. The ride should cost 15Q, but it always depends on who’s collecting. Don’t be surprised if you are asked for 25Q. The best way to avoid this is to get directly on the boat and have the perfect change, give it to them like you already know the price. Avoid the ticket sellers at the dock, they are overcharging. Another village, perfect for a day trip, is San Juan. You can actually walk there, or take a Tuktuk for 10Q. San Juan is a nice Maya village with a special- ity in “cultural” tour- ism. You can learn how to weave, or attend a Maya ceremony. Going to Panajachel, for shopping is also a good day trip. If you feel like it, try the zip line at the Nature Cen- ter. If you have time, a collectivo can bring you to San Antonio Pol- opo, another interesting village to visit. If you want to see a village with almost no tour- ism, my suggestion is Tzununa. You can go by lancha, or hire Atitlan Adventure to go visit the water falls. In conclusion, enjoy the great lifestyle of San Pe- dro, but don’t be shy to go looking around. Saturday Brunch All you can eat for 40Q 10 am to 2 pm. -- Open every night at 5 pm --

When I was young, a long time ago, we could only imagine how much fun it would to be on a lake, hanging to a rope balancing on a water ski. Only the rich kids had that opportunity. We spent summer in our par-ent backyard, lucky enough to have an above ground swim-ming pool. Actually, some of the neighbors envied us. We envied the rich kids who had a boat. By the age of 20, I was lucky enough to have some of those as friends. The son of a funeral home owner, the daughter of a chartered accountant, yeah, we could have a small taste at luxury. On a beautiful summer day, we would get together at there summer house and get the boat out for a ride. Gas wasn’t so expensive then.

Water skiing for us was the ultimate. It’s like skiing but without the snow and the cold that comes with it. In the boat, we all had a beer in our

hand, it was be-fore those laws against drink-ing and driving. Damn laws...We used two skies. We weren’t good enough to keep our balance on one ski only. It was fun any-way. And then came

the donut. No knowledge necessary to get behind the boat at high speed. The challenge was to not let go of the handles. Impossible. I still have the memories of those epic flights and dangerous acrobatic landing. Times have changed. Most of you probably tried water donuts before. But in case the child inside still wants a rush of adrenaline, you can now try it here, on lake Atitlan. For only Q 50, you’ll have 20 min-utes of pure excitement on one of the most beautiful lake in the world. Get a group together then go to La Piscina San Pedro for reservation.

One of the great thing about Guatema-la is that you can hire a shuttle for the whole day, go an hundred of kilometer away and the total cost will be the one of a 30 minutes taxi ride in your home town. For 800Q a day, you can hire a private shuttle to Guatemala city and back or for 1200Q you can even go to Monterrico (one way). Obviously, you can also take the collective service that leave San Pedro every morn-ing to go to Antigua and from there make a connection to any other destination.

For all your travel needs, you can trust our friend Cecilia and Antonio at the Maya Tzutujil travel agency. They are as professional as can be with great eth-ics and a will to satisfy you. Antonio is a

great driver, know Guatemala very well and drive safely.

You can reach Cecilia, Antonio’s wife and business partner at 4770-

7990 or just go to their office in front of the Gym and the Health Food store near the Panajachel Dock. They also can organise for you all your transportation needs like bus tickets, air-plane ticket or shuttles. Their office is also a Post Office where you can buy stamps

and post cards and mail them on the premises. Stay with us in San Pedro as long as pos-sible, but when you’re ready to leave, just visit Agencia Maya Tzutujil to or-ganise your exit out of our little paradise. (wix.com/spwebstudio/mayatzutujil)

You can ask for a Devil’s Placenta. You can ask for a Baby Guiness. You can have a simple shot of Tequila, but you can be more courageous and let destiny decide what is the drink you should have.

Years ago, La Piscina San Pedro add-ed to the menu an item call a Mystery Shot. We believe that whatever you set of beliefs are, this tradition is base on the idea of karma. If you’re a catho-lic, we think God himself decide what will be the magical ingredi-ents of your next shot. If you are new age, well lets say the universe is responsible for the mix.

How does it

work ?

It would be so easy to tell you, but if you are

curious, you’ll have to go yourself at La Piscina to try it. We can’t promise your karma deserve a good drink, but we can say with certitude you will en-joy the experience. Ask for it at Sun-day’s Smokin’ Joes’ BBQ or any other time you come to the pool.

Don’t be a coward, just come to the pool and say it. I’ll have a Mystery shot !

I have a to do list. Somewhere on the bottom of it, it say “never go horseback riding again”. Maybe I’m just a complainer, but I just can’t stand some of the aspects of horseback riding. First, lets be honest, it stink. OK, some of you may like horses so much that your think they smell good. To each its own.I understand horses have four speeds. The slow one, the walk, the second one the trot, I don’t know the third one, and the forth one the gallop. I’m personally fine with the walk and the gallop. But that middle one, the trot, I just can’t stand it at all. Ah a man, I have certain component in my anatomy that don’t enjoy at all to be thrown frantically in all di-rections. It hurts !Last time I went horseback riding, my shoes were bigger that the stir-rup. That mean that when it would

have been a good time for me to put my weight on my legs for my ass to not be on the saddle, I basi-cally couldn’t. You can imagine the result. So, when you decide to go horseback rid-ing because horses are so beautiful or any crazy reason you want, just make sure your shoes fit in the

stirrup. Obviously, I’m exaggerating my ex-perience a bit for dramatic reason. You’ll have a great time going to the beach or the mountain on your horse in San Pedro. Don’t get influenced by my negative attitude and go for it.

Those of you who went to La Piscina during there special Semana Santa Fri-day BBQ know that the Rising Minds raffle was a huge suc-cess. Thanks to the gen-erosity of La Piscina, El Barrio, Buddha Bar, Clover, Lino shoes, Johanna’s, Alegre, D’ Noz, and Le Jardin many raffle winners went home with big smiles on their faces.

The raffle successfully raised, 1,980Q, enough to help fund projects such as a recycled bottle built classroom and a tire playground struc-ture that local mothers are building, alongside with volunteers, in Chacap, a hamlet of Santa Clara.

Much thanks to the outstanding volun-

teers, Kate, Dona, and Charlie, for orga-nizing what we hope is the first of many successful fund-raising raffles.

The response from busi-ness owners who were willing to donate the prizes for the raffle was overwhelmingly gener-ous. We, at Rising Minds, feel very fortunate to live in the town with such a great spirit of coopera-tion among businesses. Along with San Pedro’s

well earned reputation for knowing how to party, it is also developing a reputa-tion as a town that cares about to the surrounding communities and the envi-ronment.

It wasn’t enough that we have our own Facebook page (Viva San Pedro), we decided we also needed a web site. So vivasanpedro.net is born. Obviously, it is a work in progress and we hope to make it more interactive. For now, it’s a da-tabase of all the editions that were p u b l i s h e d recently. It also feature our advertis-ers and gives you the links to the their web page. We hope to add a blog to it where you will be able to make com-ments about your stay in San Pedro or about the magazine. Also, we hope to make it filled with pic-tures of fun peoples having a fun time in our little town. So, when you have good picture of a good party and you would like to share

them, send them to [email protected].

Don’t forget to encourage our advertis-ers without whom this magazine would not exist. For us and for them, the pro-

motion of San Pedro is important for the future of the industry. Lots of people re-lies on tourism to feed their families and to send their kids to school. We are mak-ing sure this will continue for as long as possible.

Don’t you deserve a massage ?Your legs hurt from climbing the volca-no or just walking up the hill to the town center ?

Don’t wait to be in Thailand to treat yourself to a mas-sage and a hot tub. Many options are available in San Pedro or San Mar-cos to pamper yourself. Here, in San Pedro, there are at

least 5 places you can get a massage and 3 places where you can soak yourself in a hot tub or a Solar heated pool.

Ada, working at Hotel Villa Sol, offers different kinds of massages from face, relaxation, Swed-ish, to reflexology. There is also, Théo, working from Hotel Sakcari who

has very strong fingers. For a relaxing time in a hot bath,

you could go to Solar Pools

or Las Termales. They offer different size pools filled with water heated by the sun. You have to reserve in advance. They are both located near The Buddha bar. At Hotel Mikaso, there is a proper Jacuzzi that your can rent for an hour, alone or in good company.

Enjoy.
