FROM THE CEO/PUBLISHER

We are all so busy trying to lead full lives, but often, we are stretched too thin. For so many people these days, our lives are like a house of cards. We teeter along shakily, just barely managing to hold up our overwhelming pile of commitments and stressors. Sometimes it feels that if we try to put just one more card on top, the whole mess will come crashing down. We are all juggling too many competing priorities, have too many things to do with too little time, and virtually no time for ourselves.

So, how do we come back from burnout? How do we nd that work/life balance we so desperately seek? It can be done.

All too often, we think that being mindful requires engaging in a special activity like meditation or yoga. Sure, those times in our day are really important, but there are lots of simple things you can do to be mindful all day long. Try these simple, practical and immediately applicable routines that can help you show up at your best and achieve their goals at work and at home. Here are a few exercises that are easy to do and will make a dierence in being more mindful throughout the day:

1. Do some stretching and breathing right after you wake up in the morning: It will energize you and center you for the day ahead.

2. Write down your three top priorities for the day before you check your email: You’ll be a lot less likely to get caught up in mindless distractions

3. Listen to music that moves you instead of mindless chatter from the at screen: Make a conscious choice to listen to tunes that nourish rather than deplete your mind and heart.

4. Slow down: If you take a moment to stop and smell the roses, you’ll have more appreciation for all the beauty and abundance that life has to oer.

5. Stretch and move for at least ve minutes every hour: Research shows that “sitting is the new smoking.” Get out of your chair regularly for your health and well-being.

Do something good for your physical, emotional, spiritual well-being every single day. If you don’t schedule time for yourself ahead of time, and guard this time as sacred, you may never nd “spare time” to do it. When was the last time you had “free time”? This can be something small like spending a few minutes enjoying a cup of coee or catching up with a friend. Above all, you need to realize that you cannot do everything and be everything for everyone. It’s okay to let go of some of the tasks, so that you have time and energy to take care of what truly matters to you. I myself am guilty of getting into the day-to-day grind and forgetting people and things that are so vitally important to living a well rounded life.

I hope you will take pause to reect on some of the above. Wishing you the best New Year ever!

Until next time

Tips for Staying Healthy on Business Trips

The U.S. Department of Transportation estimates that Americans make more than 405 million business trips each year. Whether these business trips are 250 miles from home, which is most common, or they are 1,000 miles or more from home, which accounts for about 7 percent of the trips,

it’s important that business travelers do all they can to remain healthy. The last thing that employers need is for those they send on trips to come back

home sick, creating a loss of productivity in the days that follow.

“It’s common for business travelers to come home feeling sick, stressed, or having gained weight during their trips,” explains Jayne McAllister, of Jayne

McAllister Travel Wellness. “That just adds to the cost of the business trip and results in less work being done. The good news is that much of this can actually be avoided.”

As a certied coach and travel wellness expert, McAllister works with corporations to help ensure employee wellness during travel. Her programs have helped numerous companies reduce downtime and expenses that result from unhealthy employees returning from business trips.

“The few minutes it takes to plan ahead will pay o in the time it can spare you from getting sick or becoming unhealthy,” adds McAllister. “Strive for health when you are not traveling, too. The healthier you are all the time the easier you will be able to maintain it during your trips.”

McAllister provides corporate wellness assistance to those companies with business travelers who spend 30 percent of their time, or more, on the road. She specializes in such training issues as weight loss for travelers, healthy eating while traveling, ergonomics for the traveler, functional exercise, jet lag recovery and avoidance, sleep quality, and nutritional cleanses. She has also created Dine Out Lose Weight, a 21-day guide for dropping weight without setting foot in the kitchen.

About Jayne McAllister Travel Wellness Based in Vero Beach, Fla., Jayne McAllister Travel Wellness is a company that provides corporate wellness training to business who have employees that spend a lot of their time on the road. Jayne is a certied coach, who has a degree from the University of Cambridge, is a pilates instructor, and is a certied holistic health practitioner. WATCH THE FOOD. It’s easy to grab things as you are walking through the airport, but they may be options that are loaded with fat and calories. Watch the snacks, opting for healthy choices even if you have to carry some fruit and nuts with you. Also, depending on where you go there may be some places where it’s safer to avoid raw foods, street vendor foods, and to also stick to factory bottled drinks.

PLAN AHEAD. Those who spend a good portion of their time traveling for business should plan ahead to ensure they remain healthy. They can scope out where they will stay, exercise, and even make a list of restaurants in the area oering healthy meal options.

SLEEP TIGHT. Getting proper rest is essential when it comes to stress reduction and helping to keep your immune system strong. Seek out comfortable accommodations and ask for extra linens if they are needed.

MIND THE GERMS. Frequent hand washing is going to be your best option for ghting the germs. They are most commonly found on the plane tray tables, in the bathroom, and on the hotel room remote control. Consider taking a couple of antibacterial wipes to clean those things o before using them.

CLEAR YOUR MIND. Business travel can be a cause for a lot of stress. Do something to help reduce the stress. In addition to the exercise, other good options include meditating, journaling, taking a walk, or reading.

STAY HYDRATED. Be sure to get enough water during travel. Your best bet is to take a bottle of water on the plane with you, but purchase it after you have already made it through the security gate. Even better, purchase a reusable bottle with a built-in lter that you can use while traveling. Take it in empty, then when you get through security you can ll it up at the fountain.

KEEP EXERCISING. Maintaining an exercise program prior to your travel will help you do better while traveling, too. During your traveling it is important that you still keep exercising. Look into the hotel gym, pool, nearby gym, or even consider going for a walk or jog around the area where you are staying.

More and more people, especially women, are realizing that entrepreneurship may

hold the key to career fulllment and future nancial security. Nely Galán, self-made media mogul, real estate executive and women's empowerment advocate, joined Dr. Yvonne Doll, faculty member in the Doctor of Business Administration (D.B.A.) program at Walden University, and presented a free, one-hour webinar, “Top 10 Questions to Consider Before Starting Your Own Business,” on Thursday, Nov. 6. The webinar, sponsored by Walden's School of Management and The Adelante Movement, a grassroots initiative sponsored by Coca-Cola that empowers Latinas nancially and entrepreneurially in the U.S., will provide tips and best practices for starting and growing a business in today's marketplace.

Galán and Dr. Doll shared their inspirational stories while exploring key considerations of starting and running a business. Participants learned how to decide whether owning a business ts their lifestyle and passions, determined a market need for their product or service, dened their target customers and evaluated the competitive landscape. In addition, the webinar covered the concept of writing a business plan and identifying sources to help with start-up costs.

“To be a business owner, you have to be motivated by the desire to have your work amount to something that is truly yours,” said Galán. “Entrepreneurs are seekers who want to learn and want to grow. Higher education plays an important role in helping to transform opportunities for women and men who aspire to become business owners, by arming them with additional knowledge and resources that will help them become more successful.”

Galán, a rst-generation immigrant, was the rst Latina president of the Telemundo television network. She is an Emmy Award-winning producer of more than 600 television episodes in Spanish and English, including the FOX reality series “The Swan.” Galán appeared on NBC's “The Celebrity Apprentice” with Donald Trump and has presented on “The View” as a guest expert. She is also founder of The Adelante Movement, a grassroots initiative that unites and supports Latinas socially, economically and politically in the U.S.

Austen WilliamsFocused On PhilanthropyA usten Williams and S.H.A.R.E.

Together have partnered to bring awareness and hope to the world’s second largest grossing crime,

human tracking. The two have combined forces to start conversations and raise funds by promoting 8 DAYS, a feature lm that depicts a story of modern day slavery inspired by actual events. 8 DAYS calls attention to the reality of domestic human tracking in the United States and encourages honest conversations essential for the prevention and termination of human tracking.

“Human tracking is so often viewed as someone else’s problem, but it is our children, our daughters, sons, sisters, mothers, fathers, and brothers that are being sold as slaves in the modern world,” said Austen Williams, Mrs. America 2014. “Everyone can and should have a part in the ght. We all have dierent talents, gifts, and abilities and if we ban together we can change the way people view this problem. We are working to equip people with the knowledge and skills to deter violence and poverty, which so often makes victims vulnerable to tracking, and ultimately serve the least of these and put an end to one of the most horric crimes in humanity.”

S.H.A.R.E. Together partnered with After Eden Pictures to produce the 8 DAYS lm (www.ndamber.com ), in which Williams has a supporting role. All proceeds from the 8 DAYS lm will go toward the building of safe houses for rescued victims of tracking, as well as donations to various organizations that work directly with survivors, victims, and advocates.

“My part in the ght is using my voice as Mrs. America 2014 to talk about my platform, ‘Shake the Shackles: Human Tracking Awareness’,” continues Williams. “I want to use my experience as a model and actress to shed light on this darkness and that is why I am so glad to have been cast in the lm, 8 DAYS,” adds Williams.

VIVA

How long have you been doing the pageant circuit?

AustenI competed in my rst pageant almost 14 years ago at 16. I competed in a local pageant leading to Miss South Carolina Teen USA. I won the local title and the title of Miss South Carolina Teen USA 2002 later that year. I did a handful of pageants in Miss, and then I did Mrs. Texas, won that, and the rest is history. Well, except for Mrs. World, which is in November.

Harriet Watkins, Director of Online Learning, University of Arkansas System

Liz Glover, Founder and President, The Jubilee Market

VIVA

What is the most valuable life lesson you have learned along the way?

Austen“Be who you are. Own it. Love it.” and “Be better today than you were yesterday, and better tomorrow than you are today.”

VIVA

What is your motto or words to live by?

Austen“Love God and love people and all your dreams will come true.”

VIVA

If you could give one piece of advice to young women... all women... what would that be?

Austen“You don't have to be perfect, It's okay to be broken, and God loves you as you are.” We live in a culture that tells us that we need to be perfect, that perfection does not include having “stu” or being broken, and that who we are is NOT good enough. The thing is, that's just not true. No one is perfect, and everyone has “stu”. Striving for perfection is an unattainable goal that will not edify you or those around you. It is when we realize that in our brokenness we can be used for encouragement and we can see beauty for ashes. God's work is made perfect in us when we are weak... and who we were made to be is great. Do your best, be gracious to yourself, love people, and keep moving forward.

Can you please elaborate a bit about your various charities and philanthropic endeavors?

AustenThough I made over 80 philanthropic appearances as Mrs. America 2014, my heart lies with those events and appearances that allowed me to talk about the realities of human tracking. My platform this year is “Shake the Shackles: Human Tracking Awareness,” and that is exactly what I have set out to do, help people who live in bondage shake the shackles of modern day slavery, and encourage others to join the ght.

One of the primary ways I’ve been able to talk about human tracking is through the promotion of the 8 DAYS lm, which depicts the modern day slavery story of a teenage girl who was sold into human sex tracking. Talking about 8 DAYS, which is based on actual events, has given me such a unique way to make a dicult topic come to life. What is even more amazing is that the proceeds from the 8 DAYS lm is going toward the building of safe houses and support for organizations that serve and advocate on behalf of victims and survivors.

I’m called the warrior queen. I’m a ghter. I ght for those who cannot ght for themselves. I ght for those who do not realize they’re worth ghting for. Each one matters, and it is not because I have anything to do with it. It is because people are worth ghting for.

CLOSING STATEMENTS ON SUCCESS

Everyone has at least one thing that

they’re good at. It is the one thing that

they were created to do, and if we each do that one thing, that

can be the one thing that can change the course of

history for another person. That one thing could be the link in the

chain that can end human trafficking.

Success is when you can look back at your

life and know that

you’ve done all can with what you’ve been

given. Let’s do our best to serve the rest.

Cynthia BelmerOne Lebanese Woman’s Journey to Independence

E veryone has their own demons to conquer, and it's how we choose to deal with these obstacles that oftentimes dene other parts of our lives.

Meet Cynthia Belmer whose latest book, Meeting Freedom: How I Let Go of Who I Thought I Should Be and Revealed My Authentic, Unstoppable Self, recently became a #1 bestseller on Amazon.

Belmer was the rst of the women in her family to leave Lebanon, in search of her own personal truth and dreams. She shows us that through the power of love that is already within us, we can grow and seek our own freedom.

Meeting Freedom allows readers to walk side-by-side with Belmer as she faces her fears head-on. Judgment, rejection, loneliness, nancial struggles…her worries covered a wide array of areas of her life. Using her experience as a life coach, Belmer not only shares her own struggles in the most vulnerable narrative, but also oers tools to help readers understand and move on from their life's disappointments and challenges.

“Through my own reections, my hardships and ambitions are all documented,” says Belmer. “My hope is that Meeting Freedom allows readers to reect on their own fears and dreams and break free from their own struggles.”

INTERNATIONALE

vivainternationale.com | 23

Page 24: Viva_fall2014_final2_online

Viva took time to dialogue with Ms. Belmer and find out more about her personally. Why did you I move to the U.S.?

I moved to nish my masters degree but deep down, i was searching for myself. I knew deep down there was so much more to life than living in a society that’s based on appearances and I desired to connect with my true voice and my own truth.

What was life like in Lebanon growing up?

It felt so safe, homey and sweet. I enjoyed being with my immediate family as well as enjoying daily activities with my own community.

Who or what have been the biggest inspirations in your life?

In the physical level, i would the love that my family has for each other, Marianne Williamson, Pema Chodron, Tony Robbins and Buron Katie. On a spiritual level, Jesus and Buddha.

What are the biggest hurdles you have encountered?

Facing social judgment after escaping Lebanon and falling in love with someone who triggered a lot of the shame I felt from my past. Another big hurdle i encountered was detaching my identity from my work and the material world. Realizing that nothing in the physical world could really dene my spirit.

What are some of the lessons you’ve learned through hardships?

I learned to fall in love with my past and keep reminding myself that my truth is nothing but love and every time I surrender to my fears, doubt, negative emotions, I create more separation and rejection to love. This obviously, take a lot of practice but I also would love to invite everyone to practice putting their faith in love instead of fear.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

A stop putting myself in a box because it doesn’t serve anyone, including myself.

BOOK REVIEWSusan Gonzalez, BSN, author, public speaker: “Cynthia's story is thought provoking and her words are inspiring to the heart. This book is a great reminder to explore our journey to self-love and let go of what cripples us most like the fear of being judged.”

Florence Strang, B.A., B.Ed., M.Ed., registered psychologist, author, public speaker: “As a Psychologist, I am in awe of the open and vulnerable manner in which Cynthia presents herself in this story. It is a great illustration that all humans have the same fears, regardless of our successes, past experiences or history. Overall, a great read which I would highly recommend, especially for ambitious women!”

Mara Anthony, Amazon reviewer: “As a woman who is also looking for her own personal freedom and overall purpose – I really got so much from reading this book. The way Cynthia unveils her story without any inhibitions, gives the reader permission to explore her own vulnerability and what that means to her.”

Cynthia Belmer wears many hats. She’s a bestselling author, inspirational speaker, relationship coach and entrepreneur. Her work is regularly featured in MindBodyGreen, SelfGrowth, Om-Times and Elephant Journal. She currently resides in Atlanta.

2. FACIAL EXPRESSIONS. Every time you move that beautiful face, your skin wrinkles a little bit. Most of the time your face bounces back and those little wrinkles disappear once new skin cells grow.

3. CENTRAL HEATING. Many of us spend a fortune on anti-aging skin products, yet we may regularly accelerate skin aging without even being aware of it. The central heating and air conditioning systems that many of us use at home and at work can severely dry out skin, leading to premature aging and wrinkles. To help keep skin youthful and soft, try turning down the heating and wearing more layers to stay warm. Keeping a glass of water in the room can also increase humidity, while wearing a protective face cream can help relieve dryness.

4. SOAP. While you may think that soap is your skin’s best friend, this is actually not the case. The reason for this is that your skin has an acid mantle which is a natural protective barrier of the skin. When you wash with soap – which is generally alkaline – it can remove this protective layer of oils and dry out the skin, eventually leading to wrinkles. While it is not advisable to stop washing entirely, try swapping the soap for a PH-neutral and chemical-free cleanser, and bear in mind that there is such a thing as over-cleansing your skin.

Most of us know skincare basics. We understand that sun, cigarettes, and too much alcohol can contribute to premature aging. La Jolla, California board certied dermatologist Dr. Susan Stuart reveals there are lesser known “evils” that can propel the aging process.

5. YOUR PILLOWCASE. You may think you’re indulging in a bit of beauty sleep when you hit the hay at night; however the opposite could in fact be true. If you regularly sleep with the same side of your face pressed against a cotton pillow case this may cause creases on the skin which can eventually turn to ne lines and wrinkles. To help stay youthful overnight try sleeping on your back instead, or switch to a silk or satin pillowcase to create less compression wrinkles and help maintain skin’s moisture levels.

6. NOT REMEMBERING YOUR LIPS. Three-to-ve cellular layers of skin rest upon your lips, so it's important that your beauty regime includes them too. Frequently having dry, chapped lips causes them to age faster. Look for lipsticks and lip balm that contain petrolatum, dimethicone, and glycerine to help keep your smackers hydrated.

7. DRINKING FROM BOTTLES AND THROUGH STRAWS. It may be hard to believe but, yes, the puckering process of drinking from a bottle or through a straw. Just like any repeated muscle motion this can lead to ne lines and wrinkles around the mouth. Face cream can help. But dermatologists tell those who are prone to ne lines and wrinkles around the mouth to avoid straws altogether.

8. DRINKING COFFEE. Caeine is a major culprit when it comes to dry skin and the magnication of wrinkles. Quench skin by drinking lots of water. Add fruit slices like orange or lemon to enhance the avor.

9. NOT DRINKING ENOUGH WATER. Hydrating yourself daily will not only help to ght o aging, but also give your skin a healthy glow. Skip the water and you’ll be stuck with rough and 'shrunken' skin.

10. SLOUCHING AT WORK. How often do you nd yourself slumped over your desk, hand propped beneath your chin? If the answer is a lot, decreased back and neck pain aren’t the only reasons to sit up straight. “Extreme extension or exing of the neck from leaning on your chin can stretch the skin there, leading to wrinkling and sagging,” says Dr. Stuart. Looking down for prolonged periods of time while texting or reading may cause or worsen the same damage.

According to a new MarketsandMarkets report, the global breast imaging technologies market is expected to reach $3 billion by 2019 at a compound annual growth rate of 8.1 percent. And, while new ultrasound technology exists for early stage breast cancer detection, consumer awareness is little to none.

Dangerous Boobs Tour – Movement

Women everywhere need to know that if they have dense breast tissue, mammograms aren’t enough. In response, three women, Heather Reimer, founder of “Each One, Tell One” Wendy Damonte and Chiqeeta Jameson launched the Dangerous Boobs Tour to educate women about the importance of knowing that mammography is not enough for women with dense-breast tissue. They need an additional screening such as ultrasound or MRI to detect what mammography misses in that tissue type. The tour’s mantra “each one, tell one” is meant to inspire women to learn about their own breast density and, in turn, educate friends and loved ones. Reimer, Damonte and Jameson have all been impacted by dense-breast tissue. Jameson and Reimer are dense-breasted cancer survivors whose cancers were missed by mammography but were later detected through ultrasound and SonoCiné AWBUS (Automated Whole Breast Ultrasound).

American author, journalist and TV host Joan Lunden was recently interviewed on Good Morning America and announced to the world she has breast cancer. She went on to share that she has dense breast tissue and was thankful for new ultrasound testing, which is what detected her tumor. Called the SonoCiné AWBUS™ (Automated Whole Breast Ultrasound) examinations, the technology, detects 1 in 100 with the average size being 7 mm. That is less than the size of a marble and all were undetectable by mammography. This type of early detection typically means a woman does not need to undergo chemotherapy. This ultrasound technology is specically designed to detect small invasive breast cancers in women with dense-breasts and in women with breast implants, these are often missed by traditional mammography.

The facts are alarming:

• 40% of women have dense-breast tissue (DBT) and the 4.5 million women with cosmetic breast implants — mammograms often miss early stage breast tumors.

• 70% of all breast cancer occur in women with dense breast tissue and 50% of breast cancer is missed by mammography in women with DBT.

• About 1 in 300 who receive a normal mammogram have actually a detectable breast cancer found when using ultrasound or MRI.
