RESOURCES
What are the differences
between nonrenewable and renewable
resources?
NONRENEWABLE RESOURCES
A nonrenewable resource is a natural resource that cannot be re-made or re-grown at a scale comparable to its consumption.
NONRENEWABLE RESOURCES
TYPES:
o Fossil Fuels o Nuclear Fuels
FOSSILFOSSIL FUELSFUELS
o COALo PETROLIUMo NATURAL GAS
COAL, PETROLEUM, AND GAS
Coal, petroleum, and natural gas are considered nonrenewable
because they can not be replenished in a short period of
time. These are called fossil fuels.
COAL
Coal is the most abundant fossil fuel in the world.
During the formation of coal, carbonaceous matter was first compressed into a spongy material called "peat,“.
When the coal is burned, the pollutant sulfur dioxide is released into the atmosphere.
HOW IS COAL MADE ???
OIL AND GAS
Oil forms underground in rock such as shale, which is rich in organic materials.
oil also provides base material for plastics, provides asphalt for roads and is a source of industrial chemicals.
Natural gas is a mixture of gases, CH4,C2H5,C3H8,C4H10.
Natural gas is highly flammable and is odorless.
HOW ARE OIL AND GAS MADE ???
NUCLEAR NUCLEAR FUELSFUELS
NUCLEAR ENERGYNuclear fission uses uranium to create
energy.
Nuclear energy is a nonrenewable resource
because once the uranium is used, it is
gone!
Nuclear Reaction235U + n 139Ba + 94Kr + 3n
Characteristics:Characteristics:
• Bombarded by neutron
• Chain reaction:
1 neutron in,
3 neutrons out.
But not every neutron can hit
an 235U nucleus.
The reaction may eventually stop.

This neutron starts the chain reaction

COST AND AVAILABILITY : For example, it is difficult to find a car or truck that runs off of rechargeable battery power,
solar power, or electricity
When they're gone, they're gone. You can't replace natural gas, oil, or coal. Also, mining for these sources at such an intense rate can have devastating environmental effects.
THANK YOU !!!
