raditional design is extremely easy to incorporate into any home. Learn how to take back traditional and customize it for your own space.

START OUT SMALL

If the idea of transforming a large room into a traditional style seems overwhelming, start on a smaller scale, like in the master bathroom. Keep the cabinets and counters neutral and add some glamour with the wall and accent colours. Favoured shades in traditional decorating are jewel tones, like topaz and golds, deep reds, marine blues and vibrant greens.

Another great way to add traditional flair to your bath is with elegant and elaborate fixtures. Look for a faucet with unique and detailed design elements, like the new Weymouth bathroom col-lection from Moen. From the European-influenced decorative script on the porcelain inlays to the refined top finial, the Weymouth collection stands apart. A variety of products are avail-able, including single- and two-handle bath faucets, Roman tub faucets, showerheads, vertical spas and coordinating accessories. Tie the whole space together by selecting an old world finish, such as oil rubbed bronze, and you’ll create a traditional suite that’s comforting and classic.

Just because you’re incorporating stylish, traditional items, doesn’t mean you have to skimp on modern functionality or fea-

tures. The new Weymouth faucets feature a water-sav-ing aerator, which reduces water usage by up to 32 percent, without sacrificing performance. Or, you can install a matching Eco-Performance showerhead that flows at 7 litres per minute—20 percent less than the industry standard—allowing you to continue your water-sav-ings in the shower.

DIFFERENCE IN THE DETAILS

One of the best ways to add traditional style throughout your entire home is with architectural details, like moldings, chair rails or ceiling medallions. It’s easier to add these elements than you may think and at a reasonable price. Peel and stick crown molding from Easy Crown Molding allows you to add the luxurious look of custom molding to your home. In less than one hour and with-out tools you can complete an entire room. Simply pick your desired trim style and width and get started.

Don’t forget to make a statement with your windows, too hang draperies that are full and heavy, and be sure to tie them back with ornate tassels for a look that is unmistakably traditional.

is a popular choice for

countertops. Not only is it natural, high-end and versatile, but granite is also available in a variety of colors. The granite pal-let runs from light colors such as white, sand and gold to dark colors such as black and green. Neutral colors such as beige, brown and grey tend to be mainstays that match most decors. When choosing a color, look at samples, and compare them to your existing or new decor.

Instructions:

1 If you are considering granite countertops for your home,

there are several questions to keep in mind. Getting as much info mation as you can before the purchase helps ensure the result is a high quality countertop that will last for years to come. Also, look at pictures of granite countertops already in homes to get an idea of what color you like.

2 It’s a great idea to obtain several granite samples. Many manufacturers make small pieces that you can order, purchase or borrow from the store. You may also be able to obtain samples directly from the manufacturers’ websites. Though it may cost a small fee, you will be able to hold the sample up to your cabinets and floors to get an idea of what color will work in your home.

3 Choose a neutral color for your granite. Consider the resale value and that not everyone has the same taste as you. Choose a color that will appeal to a wide variety of people and not just you. Do not select a trendy color that might lose popularity in a few years. In addition, you might tire of a color that is not neutral.

4 Take inventory of the color of your cabinets, accessories, appliances and walls in your kitchen. Coordinate your granite countertop color with these, so the counters will blend in and not look out of place in your kitchen. If you plan to remodel the entire room, factor in each of these items so your room will have a uni-form and classy style.

5 Consider the lighting in your kitchen when selecting a granite countertop. If you do not have a lot of light, especially natural light, consider a lighter color countertop. Conversely, go with a darker color if your kitchen is bright and airy.

As we prepare to spend more time in the great indoors, it’s a good time to take some proactive steps to improve the environ-ment (i.e. quality of air) inside our homes, especially if someone in the family suffers from asthma or allergies.

Sources of indoor air quality problems can come from inside or outside your home. Here are some steps to help address both areas:

FROM INSIDE YOUR HOME

~ Limit sources of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are found in common household products such as paints. When painting inside, open windows, turn on fans and make sure there is continuous airflow to the outside.

~ Control indoor moisture, which can lead to mold problems. Limit the use of humidifiers and set up a dehumidifier in damp areas inside the home.

~ Look out for signs of moisture problems, such as a musty smell, condensation on windows, white powdery stains on con-crete floors and discolouration on walls, ceilings or floors.

~ Use proper ventilation, such as a fan hood vented to the outdoors, when cooking with a gas range or oven.

~ Keep vents and registers clear of dust and debris.

FROM OUTSIDE YOUR HOME

~ Use weather-stripping and caulking to seal gaps and cracks in and outside the house to prevent outdoor pollutants from com-ing in.

~ Consider investing in an insulation/air barrier system like Icynene, which can minimize the flow of outdoor pollutants and allergens into the home. The moisture management provided by this type of insulation can also help provide your house with pro-tection against moisture that can lead to other indoor air quality issues.

Colour can pull a room together, so can a classy item of furniture, or a brilliant rug. Your window treatments will do the same thing, with a bit of care and under-standing.

If you leave your windows bare, with no window treatment, before too long you may think it is okay, but your room will never look complete. Here are a few ways to help even problem windows contribute to a beautiful room:

• The first rule for window coverings is to keep it simple. A classic look will draw attention discreetly while subtly comple-menting the room.

• Sometimes windows are mismatched in size or style. You can’t move them, but you can create uniformity by mounting all the curtain rods at the same height as the tallest window. Or a box-pleated valance over the side panels can help the lower

windows look taller.

• Often, coverings for two windows in the room have to perform quite different functions. Traffic control at a patio door, for example, and light con-trol in the TV viewing area. Using the same fabric or pattern for each will help them integrate. Create the look that expresses your style with great com-panies such as Shade-O-Matic.

• When things get difficult, cellular shades can often provide the answer. They look good from the outside, while on the inside they can be dressed up to harmonize with any style, even the family room.

• Don’t be afraid to ask for help. A window covering professional can usually offer a choice

of solutions, and may introduce you to materials and techniques that you didn’t know existed.

With everyday life, it should be expected that your floor will take a little wear and tear, especially if you have pets or active families. Spills, scratches, and life can and probably will happen to floors. Sanding and refinishing or worse, replacing an entire floor, is not only difficult, but also expensive. What will happen if you have an unsightly dent or scratch in your new floor?

A new way to replace damaged floor planks

One company has an answer to life’s mishaps. Torlys Smart Floors offer the Bulldog tool for all its hardwood, laminate, cork and leather floors. Because all Torlys floors utilize a special joint technology, Bulldog allows you to replace a damaged plank even in the middle of the room without removing the whole floor. This tool pulls the damaged plank away from the rest of the floor and allows for inserting the new plank simply and easily. There’s no glue, no nails and best of all, there’s no mess.

Torlys offers the Bulldog to all its dealers and it’s a smart con-

sideration when looking for the perfect floor for your home. Not only does easy plank replacement give homeowners peace of mind about purchasing a new floor, it’s environmentally responsible. For more information visit torlys.com.

Consider this before purchasing flooring

Buy an extra carton or keep some extra planks when fin-ished installing your floor so if you ever need to replace a plank, you have one that matches your existing floor.

Check to see how easy it is to repair your floor. Does the manufacturer offer special repair tools?

Ask your dealer for minor fix-up kits when you pur-chase your floor. That way you are prepared for small wear and scratch fixes.

If you’re one of the many people thinking about purchasing a 3-D TV, or if you already own one, you may want to consider displaying it on a moveable wall mount in order to experience the best your 3-D screen has to offer.

Although 3-D has improved vastly in recent years the technol-ogy is still relatively new, and many people are noticing picture quality problems when watching a 3-D TV from either the left or right of centre-screen. Picture degradation at increased viewing angles is a common problem that plagues many LCD and LED screens but some industry experts argue these problems are ampli-fied on 3-D screens. Many reviews of 3-D TVs support these claims, often additionally indicating a ghosting effect on the screen.

The simplest solution is to mount your 3-D television on the

wall. Moveable wall mounts allow you to position the TV in any direction so the optimal viewing angle can always be achieved. And don’t overlook the other benefits mounted TVs provide. Mounting your TV is a safer alternative than setting it on top of furniture where it could easily tip, and it adds valuable space to a room by getting the TV up and out of the way.

Come in and SeeCome in and SeeOur New Look! Our New Look!

The formula for calculating the proper amount of light you should have in each room of your home:

Multiply the length times the width of the room (in feet). Then, multiply that number times 1.5. This number gives you the amount of wattage* needed to light the room properly for general illumi-nation.

For task lighting in areas where stronger light is needed (such as a kitchen island), multiply the area’s square footage by 2.5 rather than 1.5 to find the needed wattage.*

*Wattage is based on incandescent (standard) bulbs.

To determine the proper fix-ture width:

Add the length and width dimensions (in feet) of the foyer area together. This number is the proper width (in inches) for the fixture you’ll need there.

To determine the proper fix-ture height:

The bottom of the fixture should be at least 7 feet from the floors. Depending on ceil-ing height, you could use a flush mount, a semi-flush, or if you have a tall ceiling, you may use a 2 or 3-tier chandelier.

If there is a window above the front door, center the chan-delier so it can be seen from outside. If the foyer area is large, you may also want to

include wall sconces. Install them approximately 60 inches from the floor, 6 - 8 feet apart.

There should be a fixture every 8- 10 feet. Either flush mounts, semi-flush fixtures or chandeliers can be used depend-ing on the ceiling height. The bottom of the light fixture should be at least 7 feet from

the floor. If you have a long hallway,

you may want to install wall sconces for added light. Sconces are hung about 60 inches from the floor spaced 6 - 8 feet apart along the wall.

You can use a chandelier, a flush mount or semi-flush fixture as the main light in your kitchen. The bottom of the fixture should be at least 7 feet from the floor.

To light areas such as kitchen islands, use a decorative island light with 2 or 3 shades, or mul-tiple pendants can be installed over your island for sufficient light and to add a designer ele-

ment to that area. the bottom of the fixtures should be no lower than 30 inches above the counter top.

To light a dinette area, use a decorative pendant (single light - since this is generally a smaller eating area) or a mini-chandelier. The bottom of the fixture should be no lower than 30 inches above the tabletop.

To light a bathroom with the desirable amount of light for the vanity/mirror, to avoid shadows, install a bathbar at least 24 inches wide over the mirror, plus two wall sconces (one on each side of the mir-ror) at least 28 inches apart and 60 inches above the floor.

If you have a double sink vanity, use a bathbar that is almost as wide as the mirror, or two fixtures (one mounted over each sink). The bathbars should be mounted 78 inches from the floor, centered over the mirror.

If you have a truly large bathroom, besides the vanity/mirror lighting, you will prob-ably need additional flush

mount, semi-flush fixture or even a small chandelier for a designer touch.

Updating your lighting fixtures can dramatically change the way your home looks without costly home decorating or remodeling.

When choosing several light-ing fixtures for a room, check for available fixtures from the same collection, to match the overall

look. You can make a room seem

larger by washing its walls with even lighting.

In a large room, lighting up a few areas with pools of light can make the room feel smaller and cozier.

Be certain the electric current is turned off before cleaning.

Clean metal components with a soft cloth, moistened with a mild liquid soap solution.

Wipe clean and buff with a very soft dry cloth. Under no circumstances should any metal polish be used, as its abrasive

nature could damage the protec-tive finish placed on the metal parts.

Never wash glass shades in an automatic dishwasher. Line a sink with a towel and fill with warm water and a mild liquid soap. Wash glass with a soft cloth, rinse and wipe dry.

Many people looking at doing kitchen renovations face the same dilemma - where do I start and how far should I go? Should I simply reface my existing cabinets or design and order new ones? There are many factors to look at when making this decision:

1. How old is the existing kitchen?2. Does the current design suit your needs?3. Is this upgrade for resale purposes?4. Am I doing just the kitchen or other features such as flooring or wall removal?5. What about the countertops?6. How much can I afford?

1. If the existing kitchen is more than 15 years old then re-facing is not a wise choice as you now only have a new looking façade with possibly old drawers and plastic or wood guides, old worn moldy shelves and water damage in the sink area. Today’s new products and technology have lengthened the life of a quality kitchen to 20-25 years.

2. Design protocol has changed so much from the past and family needs have grown to centre more around the kitchen as a

focal point of a home that you may be missing out a great oppor-tunity to improve your current asset.

3. An old kitchen is simply selling old worn out product with a new paint job. You should design a new kitchen for resale if that is a need or reduce the selling price of your home by an equivalent dollar value and let the new owners plan a kitchen that suits their needs.

4. Many of today’s renovations include new floors, doors/windows and some structural changes. This would allow you to make the best of a renovation by redesigning a new functional kitchen with the future in mind.

5. If the kitchen is old enough for a reface or change, then quite possibly the countertops are too. This will have a big impact on the budget.

6. As with anything in life, cost is relative to need, product value and available funds. You may be on a fixed budget and re-facing is within the budget and new is not. The question now arises again, am I willing to keep old worn out interiors and settle for just a new look or could I downgrade the door style/color to have all new product? You get what you pay for in all retail prod-ucts on the open market,so you may be better off to save for one more year and have the funds to do the job correctly. Both you and any potential purchasers will happier in the long run.

Kitchen Design

helpful hints and tipsKitchen design today is full of endless ideas and features.

When designing a kitchen you need to ask yourself what do I need and what do I want? Is this for my personal use or is this a re-sale feature item? Optional items in kitchen design these days are plen-tiful. Many are functionally useful and necessary to your needs, many are simply pretty and trendy.

If this kitchen is for your personal long term use then add what ever features you can comfortably afford and find appealing. Make yourself happy so that you will enjoy every moment in your new kitchen without breaking the bank, only add what you can afford.

If however you are upgrading to sell, then keep the upgrades to what can be seen. Buyers seldom open every door or drawer to see what is behind them, and this is where the majority of these upgrades exist.

First settle on one design to start. Most diligent consumers do shop for the best deal and that is fine just make sure that each supplier does an apples for apples quote on the same design and all other components involved. During this process you will find different features and options from different suppliers and that is great as well.

Whether you choose a stained wood, lacquered finish or other fin-ishes, the color and door style should be reflective of your decorum, home setting and style. The kitchen is generally the crown jewel of the home and it completes the theme of the home. There are many factors involved here. Features such as wall texture/color, flooring, architec-ture, furnishings and accents all come into play. These need to work together to create the atmosphere and ambience you are looking for. A great design can be lost in choosing a dated wood or color.

If the home is destined for the resale market then you need to remain more neutral in order to appeal to the general public.

If this is your dream kitchen, then you may require the services of a professional designer to help make sure you have captured all these elements and that all current trends and products have been investigated to ensure that your kitchen remains in style for many years to come.

Kitchen Design

Islands are a very special feature a kitchen’s design and added functionality. Size is proportionate to available space. Your egress from Island C/Top front edge to wall C/Top front edge should be between 36”- 42”. The reason for this is in your footing. You should only be transferring your position in one clean step, other-wise you are shuffling a half step and this creates a trip zone and wears on your flooring.

Now you can make the island as big as you have room for as long as it does not extend beyond the footprint of the kitchen or interfere with natural traffic flow. Your work stations should all be on no more than two sides of an island, otherwise it will become an impediment to function and flow. Big Islands should all be one level. The raised eating bar is more for smaller or angled islands. The bigger the island the more features it should have to make a grand statement such as posts, flutes, corbels, library panel, furni-ture kick, glass doors or wine racks etc.

Kitchens are an industry that very much lives up to the adage, you get what you pay for. Like automobile’s and fine wine, cheaper is not better. Ask lots of questions from your kitchen designer or supplier and make notes of the answers, this is your kitchen that you will want to enjoy for many many years take so charge of your investment.

Countertops are the crowning glory of the kitchen design. They tie the whole package together, cabinets, walls & flooring. So whether you do this with laminate, granite, corian, engineered stone, concrete, soapstone or whatever, cost is where you will most likely start. Higher end homes in the 450K plus range should all have countertops above the laminate range. From here there are several choices each with varying features, color pallets, sink options and price range. The best place to acquire this information is from the suppliers themselves. They know all the features and benefits to their products. They most likely will not however expound on the features of a competing product so you need to take the information and compare.

Laminate has been a main stay for many years and is a very good, affordable and durable product with an incredible color and texture range. You have many different edge profile choices that can really dress up your countertop and many people will do a feature of a different product on the island to class things up even more.

The choice ultimately begins with affordability relative to application. Long term versus upgrade for resale. Shop and com-pare, the more valuable the kitchen and home the more prospec-tive purchasers will expect to see.

The iD100 adds a huge leap in convenience to transform the iPad into a true audiophile device as well as delivering epic results from the iPhone and iPod.

Taking a digital audio feed revolutionises what’s possible from an iPad and the iD100’s carefully considered design allows maximum extraction of every last drop of data from the world’s favourite tablet. Supporting all Apple file types including lossless, bit-perfect low jitter digital data is then fed to an external DAC (such as Cambridge Audio’s DacMagic) or AV Receiver using its digital input for the best possible digital to analogue conversion.

It’s not just about music either, the iD100 is designed to support the growing number of users who store or stream video on their devices allowing enjoyment of portable content like YouTube, iTunes, iPlayer and much more on the big screen.

And as listening shifts from stored to streaming services, the iD100 maximises the quality of music streaming Apps like Spotify, Pandora,

Rhapsody, Last FM and others.

For the ultimate in convenience, the iD100 is supplied with a full remote enabling armchair control of iPod content, acti-vation of iTunes syncing and even charging of the connected iPhone, iPod or iPad. By switching off charging, any possible interference between the Apple device and hi-fi system is completely eliminated.

Like all Cambridge Audio designs, the iD100 is an object lesson in design simplicity. Constructed from solid aluminium and available in elegant black or silver finishes, the iD100 will be right at home within any home entertainment system and is designed to complment other Cambridge Audio products.

WHAT NEW PARENTS NEED TO KNOW ABOUTWINDOW COVERING SAFETY

The safest window coverings for homes where small children are present are cordless products, because they eliminate the use of potentially hazardous dangling cords. Ask your Budget Blinds Style Consultant about these cordless upgrades today.

Certain styles of window coverings, like shutters, draperies and motorized roller shades have no internal cords whatsoever. The internal cords of cordless cellular shades, particularly those with smaller cells, are inaccessible to tiny fingers.

In addition to choosing cordless window treatments, new parents want to pay attention to where they place furniture in the room. The Window Covering Safety Council recommends moving cribs and furniture away from window areas so that children aren’t tempted to play with window treatments.

If you are in a living situation where you cannot install cordless window treatments, be sure to secure operation cords out of reach with cord tensioners and cord cleats.

Cordless Lift System

This innovative feature allows you to raise and lower window coverings easily with one hand. Eliminating the need for lift cords provides added safety and a cleaner look. Ask about cordless cellular shades.

MotorizationUsing a battery-operated remote control, you can raise, lower, tilt

or open and close your window coverings at the touch of a button. No hard wiring required. For a completely cord free product, ask about motorized roller shades.

Shutters are a cord-free product, making it a great option for homes with small children.

The trend to bring nature and its elements indoors has inspired a new trend in flooring. Over the past few years, cork has become a popular flooring choice due to its chic-unique aesthetics and environmental benefits.

The Right Choice for Your Home

Cork is warm as well as inviting, and complements a variety of decorating styles and elements, including all wood furniture fin-ishes. It’s the perfect choice no matter your current decor or taste. Whether you prefer a casual, modern or relaxed country look, cork will accentuate any style or space.

Cork floors have been used for decades, traditionally been used in schools and libraries for its acoustic benefits. Redesigned for today’s consumer, cork is making its way into mainstream living rooms, bedrooms and in particular, kitchens due to its natural beauty, comfort and warmth. While you’ll love the look of cork, you’ll absolutely adore the feel of it. Cork is 50% air, a dense cushion that insulates against cold and comforts every footstep. With a cork floor underfoot, you’ll never want to wear shoes or socks indoors again.

Industry tests for wear have also shown that cork endures like hardwood. Add to this its ability to absorb sound, and cork is beautiful, smart and tough to its core.

The Right Choice for the Environment

Cork offers one more comfort—peace of mind for the environ-mentally conscious. Cork comes from bark and gently harvested

from living trees. While harvests occur often, the same tree is used only once every nine years. The time-honoured tradition, which includes hand tools, never destroys the tree, making cork an entirely renewable resource.

Which rooms suit cork floors?

11 Casual living spaces where you live on the floor—great rooms, family rooms, basements.

22 Kitchens—the warmth and comfort benefits are unsurpassed.

33 Bathrooms—warm and beautiful. No need for special under floor heat.

44 Bedrooms—warm and comfortable when getting out of bed and hypoallergenic.

the cold weather approaches and the first snowflakes begin to fall, it is important to ensure your home is winter-ready. There are plenty of simple ways to winterize your home without breaking the bank, with a positive effect on lowering your heating bills.

INTERIOR: First, inspect your furnace and replace the filter. Stock up

on furnace filters and be sure to change them every month. Next, have your fireplace cleaned so it will be ready for use. Screen the top of your chimney to keep out rodents and birds and store fire-wood in a dry place away from the outside of your home. Inspect the mortar between bricks to make sure that your fires remain contained within the hearth. And, ensure all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors have had the battery replaced.

EXTERIOR: Examine the exterior of your home for cracks and crevices, which could allow cold air to seep inside. Apply weather-stripping around doors and caulk windows. Homes with base-ments and attics are prone to cold drafts. In basements, consider covering window wells with plastic wrap. When the warm weath-er returns, you can remove the wrap. Warm air rises, so adding extra insulation to your attic will ensure the warmth stays where it’s needed. “These small, but important steps can make a huge difference on your heating bill,” says Yvonne Ratigan, a senior executive with Royal LePage Canada. “Time and a little money spent in the fall, can pay big dividends in the winter.”

GARDEN: Prune trees and shrubs to minimize potential for damage by snow, particularly those that hang close to the home. Clear out planters and store for spring and dust plant bulbs with bone meal. Drain all garden hoses and shut off outside water. If we enjoy a warm day, it may be a good time to seal the driveway or deck.

These simple steps can help you to enjoy the winter without fear of damage to your home. Be prepared, and embrace all that the winter has to offer.
