1. PurposeThe Blue Medora VMware vRealize Operations (vROps) Management Pack for Oracle Database User Guide describes the primary features of the Management Pack for Oracle Database, including dashboards, views, reports, alerts, and metrics that allow users to optimize the monitoring and management of Oracle Database resources from within vRealize Operations.

2. Introduction to the Management PackThe Management Pack for Oracle Database is an embedded adapter for vRealize Operations (vROps) that monitors Oracle Database systems remotely through a JBDC connection to retrieve performance data regarding Oracle Database resources.

This section includes the following topics:• How the Management Pack Collects Data• Data the Management Pack Collects

2.1 How the Management Pack Collects DataDuring each data collection cycle, the Management Pack opens a JDBC connection to the specified Oracle Database instance and queries it to retrieve metrics from database objects.

The collection interval for the adapter instance resource determines how often the Management Pack collects data. The default collection interval is five minutes.

2.2 Data the Management Pack CollectsThe Management Pack can collect performance data, relationships (associations), and events for the following Oracle Database resources:

1. Oracle DB Adapter Instance 2. Oracle DB Environment 3. Oracle DB Database 4. Oracle DB Instance 5. Oracle DB Tablespace 6. Oracle DB Query

2.3 Inventory Tree (Traversal Spec)The Inventory Tree (Traversal Spec) feature within vROps allows you to easily navigate your Oracle Database environment. The hierarchical structure implicitly shows relationships among resource kinds and enables quick drill-downs to root-cause issues.

3. DashboardsDashboards are the primary user interface that allow users to monitor Oracle Database resources from within vRealize Operations.

The following dashboards are available in the Management Pack:

• Oracle Overview • Oracle on OS • Oracle on VM • Oracle IOPS • Oracle Queries • Oracle Tablespace • Oracle Health Investigation

3.1 Oracle Overview

The Oracle Overview dashboard displays heat maps depicting the overall health of Oracle databases. Figure 2: Oracle Overview Dashboard


3.2 Oracle on OSThe Oracle on OS dashboard allows you to select an Oracle database and related operating system in order to view key performance metrics (KPIs) for each. Figure 3: Oracle on OS Dashboard


3.3 Oracle on VMThe Oracle on VM dashboard allows the user to select an Oracle database and related virtual machine to view key performance indicators (KPIs) for each.

3.4 Oracle IOPSThe Oracle IOPS dashboard allows the user to select an Oracle instance to view IO stats for the instance, virtual machine, and datastore.

3.5 Oracle QueriesThe Oracle Queries dashboard allows the user to select an Oracle instance to view a ranking of the Top 10 slowest queries. The dashboard also allows you to select individual queries from the heat map to view performance metrics for the selected query.

3.6 Oracle TablespaceThe Oracle Tablespaces dashboard allows the user to select an Oracle database and related Tablespaces to view heat maps showing available free space.

3.7 Oracle Health Investigation The Oracle Health Investigation dashboard allows the user to select an alert in order to view overall health, KPIs, topology information, parent, and child health stats for the affected resource.

4. ViewsThe vROps Management Pack for Oracle Database contains custom views, which allow the user to view statistics of metrics for Oracle Database resources. Views provide a “big picture” look at resources, as opposed to a more in depth view.

To access the Management Pack views, go to Environment > Oracle Database and click the desired Object (resource kind). Select the Details tab, then Views. Select the desired view from the list to populate the statistics below.

5. ReportsThe vROps Management Pack for Oracle Database contains the following custom reports. The reports can be exported and easily shared with key stakeholders in either .pdf or .csv formats.

To access the Management Packs reports, go to Environment > Oracle Database and click the desired Object (resource kind). Select the Reports tab, then Report Templates.

To run the selected report, click the Run Template icon ( ).

6. AlertsThe vROps Management Pack for Oracle Database pulls Oracle Database health indicators and displays them in vRealize Operations as alerts. The critical levels of each alert are closely mapped from Oracle Database to vROps. Refer to Appendix II for the full list of alerts, symptoms, and recommendations provided by this Management Pack.

7. Analysis BadgesUsing the predictive analytics capabilities of the vROps Analysis Badges through capacity definitions, the Management Pack for Oracle Database populates session capacity for the Oracle Database instance resource kind. For details, refer to section. “11. Appendix III: Capacity Definitions”.

8. Troubleshooting the Management PackKnown troubleshooting information can help you diagnose and correct common problems with the Management Pack for Oracle Database.

8.1 Troubleshooting an Adapter InstancePerform these general troubleshooting steps to diagnose and correct problems with an adapter instance:

• Edit the adapter instance and click Test Connection to verify the connection to vROps. Refer to section “8.2 Testing Connection Failures”.• View the collection status and collection state for the adapter instance resource on the Environment Overview page in vROps.• Check the adapter and collector logs for errors. Refer to section “8.3 Viewing System Log Files”, for details.

8.2 Testing Connection FailuresWhen clicking Test Connection in the Manage Solution window when adding an adapter instance, the following connection errors are possible.

8.2.1 User Authentication ErrorError: Unable to establish a valid connection to target system. User Authentication error. Action: Ensure the correct Oracle Database User Name and Password were entered when adding your credential.

8.2.2 Host, port, or SSL settings are incorrectError: Host, port, or SSL settings are incorrect.Action: Ensure the correct hostname, port number, and SSL settings for the Oracle Database instance were entered when adding your adapter instance. Ensure you are using the default port that corresponds to the applicable SSL settings (non-SSL = 1521; SSL = 2484).

8.2.3 SID/Service Name is invalidError: The given SID/Service Name is invalid.Action: Check your Oracle Database database system and ensure your SID/Service name is the same as the one entered for your adapter instance.

8.2.4 Invalid character(s) found in SID/Service NameError: Invalid character(s) found in SID/Service NameAction: Make sure your SID/Service Name contains only alpha-numberic characters.

8.2.5 SSL RC4 Cipher Suites compromisedError: SSL RC4 Cipher Suites are considered compromised (and disabled) with Java 1.8.0_60+Action: Configure the Oracle Database to not use SSL RC4 Cipher Suites. To configure valid SSL Cipher Suites for an Oracle database either use the netca utility installed with Oracle Database, or edit the sqlnet.ora file.


8.3 Viewing System Log FilesYou can view Oracle Database adapter errors in the adapter and collector log files. You can view the adapter and collector log files in the vROps user interface or in an external log viewer.

The adapter log files are in the $ALIVE_BASE/user/log/adapters/OracleDatabaseAdapter/ folder. The collector log files are in the $ALIVE_BASE/user/log/ folder.

The logging level is set to ERROR by default. To troubleshoot issues, set the logging level to INFO. To view detailed messages, including micro steps, queries, and returned results, set the logging level to DEBUG.

You can set the base log level for the collector via Administrator -> Support -> Logs -> Select COLLECTOR folder -> Select Edit Properties icon -> Edit Root logger level.

NOTE: If you set the logging level to DEBUG, log files can become large very quickly. Set the logging level to DEBUG only for short periods of time.
