Servers that are dispersed and scattered across various applications and/or divisions can be consolidated and optimized. This allows you to use hardware resources more effectively, leading to reductions in costs such as electric power, air conditioning, installation space, and maintenance.

Multiple servers and OS environments are required for development and evaluation. Through the introduction of virtualization, different OSs can be run on a single server, resulting in signicant hardware procurement cost savings and greatly simplifying environment preparations.

The construction of backup sites requires the creation of a system with the same conguration as that of the main site. The introduction of virtualiza-tion enables consolidation of the standby servers of the backup site, yield-ing signicant IT cost savings.

Even when the continued use of existing systems is made difcult by the end of support of constituent servers, these systems can be run on the latest servers through the introduction of virtualization, allowing them to continue being used in a safe and secure manner.

Benets of VMware vSphere for server virtualization

VMware vSphere 5 features

VMware vSphere achieves server virtualization that enables multiple

OSs (such as Windows and Linux) and applications to run simulta-

neously by operating multiple virtual machines (VMs) on a single

physical server.

Server virtualization allows you to use IT resources more effectively,

improve operational efciency, and reduce TCO by integrating serv-

ers, leveraging existing systems, consolidating development and

evaluation environments, and providing business continuity in times

of disaster.

Skillful handling of system operation made more complex by server virtualization

Systems until now featured simple one-on-one relationships between a physical server and the OS and applications running on that server,

whereas virtualized environments are characterized by complex relationships in which multiple OSs and applications run on a physical server.

Moreover, in terms of architecture, virtualized layers are newly introduced between the hardware layer and OS/application layer, meaning an

increased number of elements that creates even more complexity.

For this reason, in a virtualized environment, both the physical server and virtual machines need to be skillfully managed.

The state of the hardware is continuously monitored and when signs

of an impending failure are detected, the virtual machines are relocated

to a sound physical server to prevent operation interruptions. If an

actual failure does occur, the virtual machines are automatically

restarted and the operation is quickly resumed.

The load status of the virtual machines that are currently running is

detected and operations are concentrated on a small number of

physical servers within an appropriate load range, with the redundant

physical servers powered off to save power.

As the virtualization of servers progresses, systems that are unsuitable

for virtualization owing to ICT infrastructure conditions or OS and

application-related factors have emerged, and this has resulted in a

mix of virtualized environments and physical environments.

NEC SigmaSystemCenter centrally manages environments virtualized

by VMware vSphere and physical environments such as servers and

storage hardware, thereby reducing system administrator workload

by optimizing resources and automating operations.

NEC SigmaSystemCenter autonomously deals with current conditions,

from response to high loads or failures to power-saving operation,

thereby maintaining the ICT infrastructure in an optimal state. Further,

resources such as servers, storage hardware, networks, and

software are pooled, allowing them to be allocated to each system

as the need arises.

The CPU, memory, disks and other resources are considered as one

pool (a collection of resources) and are managed in an integrated

manner for efcient operation. The available amount of resources

for each application or system can be allocated as a sub-resource

pool, making the actual usage status of resources easy to grasp.

Concentrated access from multiple virtualized servers to NAS storage hardware over an existing network can degrade performance. SAN

storage connects servers and storage hardware via a dedicated network thereby maximizing the benets of server virtualization.

The NEC Storage M Series for SAN storage is ideal for virtualization and cloud environments, supports ever expanding corporate data, and

provides environmentally friendly power saving. Equipped with

advanced ECO features, this product is affordable while offering

high reliability and high performance.

vCenter plug-in software works together with VMware vCenter

Server, which provides integrated management of virtualized envi-

ronments, to enable NEC Storage M Series information to be

displayed and managed on VMware vSphere Client or a web client.

Usually, both storage management tools and VMware vCenter

Server are required to assign logical disks to VMware vSphere. By

using the vCenter plug-in, however, this series of operations can be

executed at the same time on VMware vSphere Client or on a web

client, making it easy to create and assign logical disks.

Since its launch in 1994, the Express5800 Series has continued to

incorporate the latest technologies and evolve in response to

changes in the market to answer the needs of customers.

Trusted and favored by many customers, a total of one million

Express5800 Series units have been shipped in Japan, an industry

rst for PC servers, and this series has achieved the No. 1 share* for

seventeen years in a row.

In addition to blade servers, which incorporate many of NEC’s

advanced technologies and are ideal for server virtualization, the

Express5800 Series offers a broad array of space-saving, power-

saving, and quiet-operation products.

We support the server virtualization needs of our customers through one-stop solutions that

utilize our many years of know-how in virtualization technology to combine hardware such as

Express5800 Series and other high-performance storage systems, software products such

as integrated platform management software allowing integrated management of physical

and virtualized environments, and HA clustering software to improve availability.

Express5800 × VMware

Through redundancy of hardware modules such as the CPU, memory, hard disk

drives, and other components, and real-time synchronization, these servers

avoid system down-time by implementing instant switching in the event of a hardware failure.

In a virtualized environment, there is greater risk of hardware failures bringing all systems to a

stop, but by constructing a virtualized environment on these servers, stable operation without

business interruptions can be achieved.

NEC offers a broad lineup of rack servers suitable for

server virtualization. Our rack servers enable energy-

efcient operation of both hardware and software

through features such as peak power control to enable

high-density mounting within racks and high-efciency power sup-

plies to minimize power loss.

NEC’s blade servers combine virtualization technology

to enable more efcient server consolidation. They con-

tain server, storage, and network components, reducing

installation space and power consumption requirements

and facilitating maintenance.

EXPRESSCLUSTER, the number one selling* disaster recovery and business

continuity solution in the Asia-Pacic region, ensures high system availability by

monitoring system errors and transferring operations to a sound server when a

failure occurs.

While capable of detecting and handling hardware failures and some virtualiza-

tion software and OS failures, vSphere HA does not detect and therefore cannot

handle some application failures and OS failures on virtual machines. By using

EXPRESSCLUSTER in combination with vSphere HA, you can create a high-

availability virtualized environment capable of handling application failures and

OS failures that cannot be detected by vSphere HA.

* IDC Asia/Pacic, August 2013 “Asia/Pacic (Excluding Japan) Availability and Clustering Software MarketAnalysis and Forecast Update” (AP2670321U)

In a virtualized environment, multiple virtual machines run on a single physical

server. If that server fails, all the virtual machines running on the server stop until

the server is restarted. The subsequent halt in business operations and services

affects a company’s bottom line and leads to loss of trust.

As server virtualization increases in scale, the potential damage caused by stop-

pages escalates. Therefore, one of the major issues to be resolved in virtualized

environments is how to improve failure handling and availability.

VMware vSphere provides a range of features to improve availability but is not

always able to handle all failures. The answer is to combine VMware vSphere

with another mechanism (product). NEC’s popular disaster recovery and busi-

ness continuity solution EXPRESSCLUSTER can be used effectively with

VMware vSphere to improve failure handling and provide higher availability.

VMware vSphere

Failure

Virtualized environments must provide higher availability through better failure handling

Optional monitoring agents regularly monitor the status

of specied applications and trigger a failover if they

detect an abnormal response or hangup, allowing busi-

ness operations to continue uninterrupted.

Monitoring agents provide features that are tailored to

specic applications running on databases, Internet

servers, application servers, and le servers. This

enhances monitoring and leads to much higher availabil-

ity in a virtualized environment.
