Term Definition Examples

Refrain A word or group of words repeated at intervals in poetry for a desired effect.

Compound Sentence Two independent clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction and a comma.

Jack walked, but I ran.

Coordinating Conjunction

A word that links two phrases or independent clauses together.

For, and, nor, but, or, yet, so (FANBOYS)

Independent Clause A group of words containing a subject and a verb that can “stand alone”.

Jack walked.

Dependent Clause A group of words that do not form a complete thought and can’t “stand alone”.
