JOSÉ MOSSGELD SANTIAGO (-FONT) [bs-b]. San Miguel de Mayumo, Gulacan, Philippines, 1893-Manila, 1959. He studied violin and piano in his youth and then law. In this latter early adult period his voice was discovered and he decided to make music his profession. He left the Philippines for New York in the mid-1920s and worked with baritone Pasquale Amato. He was soloist at the Roxy Theater for two years and was often heard on the radio. In 1930 he won the Caruso American Memorial Foundation vocal competition which allowed him to study in Italy. There he made his debut at La Scala in 1933 as Sparafucile in Rigoletto with Dal Monte and Gigli, also appearing as Amonasro in Aida. In 1935 he was on the roster of La Fenice, singing Oroveso to Rosa Raisa’s Norma, as well as Alvise in La Gioconda and Jacobo in the now forgotten Baldo by Giovanni Cigona. After his Italian success, Santiago returned to the Philippines, where he taught and was involved in opera production in Manila.

CARL SCHLEGEL [b]. Furth (Nuremburg), Germany, 1875 - Brooklyn, NY, 1945. A scholarship student at the Munich Royal Conservatory of Music (through the influence of Cosima Wagner), Schlegel appears to have emigrated to the U.S. in 1898 and thereupon continued vocal studies in New York with Arthur Claasen. Schlegel is first given press notice around 1900. Being a member of the Metropolitan Opera Company from 1913 through 1926, he was one of the very few singers of German birth who remained with the company through the First World War, when most German singers exited, either by choice or request. At any rate, his Met repertoire included 36 roles, the majority in German but others in French, Italian and English. He was otherwise very busy in various concert appearances as well as in oratorio and occasionally on the radio, mostly in the Eastern half of the U.S. His name seems to have disappeared from the press after 1937, although he served as a soloist at St. Patrick’s Cathedral (NYC) and taught at the NY College of Music. He died at the Shore Road Nursing Home in Brooklyn in 1945, having been ill for a lengthy period. His wife died in 1942, and they were survived by a son, Harry (then on the N.Y. Daily News editorial staff) and a daughter, Gabrielle.

SYBIL (BEDDINGTON) SELIGMAN(N) [ms]. London, 1868-1936. Born of a wealthy family, Sybil was “educated in the best bourgeois fashion” with emphasis on music and languages. In 1891, she wed David Seligman, a wealthy American, and they had two sons. Her husband wasn’t particularly interested in music and the arts but was willing to support his wife’s enthusiasms. She studied voice with Paolo Tosti, beginning in 1904 and soon made a recording for Fonotipia of two of her singing master’s songs. In the same year, via Tosti, she met Puccini, with whom she had a short, passionate affair which developed into a friendship that lasted throughout Puccini’s lifetime. She was also a friend of Caruso and other musicians of the period. A 1906 U.S. magazine article notes her appearances in an operatic program at the New York Institute of Musical Art by American “pupils of Mr. [Alfred] Giraudet, the distinguished singing teacher from the Paris Opèra[-Comique]” who was a guest instructor there. There, as Mrs. Seligman, she performed a scene from Mignon with one Mr. Pool, bass. -For further information on Sybil Seligman (and the source of the first quote above), see the Internet article, Sybil’s Story by Kelmut Krausser in The Opera Critic.

(AUGUSTUS) HOBART SMOCK [t]. Locust Valley, LI, NY, 1870-Towson, MD, 1926. He was educated at Rutgers College, NJ, and then took up singing professionally, enacting principal roles in The Prince of Pilsen and San Toy. In the latter he appeared abroad for two seasons. He settled in Baltimore around 1903. At that time he began a career of “indefatigable service to local musical development”. He was tenor soloist at the Ascension P. E. Church and the Eutaw Place Synagogue, although whether he actually was a tenor or a baritone isn’t particularly clear. He was also the organizer and conductor of the Baltimore & Ohio Glee Club, the Grachur Glee Club and the Johns Hopkins Glee Club. These were apparently not high paying positions, as one source indicates that he supplemented his income by selling insurance in Towson, MD. Shortly before his death, preceded by “a long illness”, Smock was paid tribute by Baltimore “with a substantial testimonial concert”. In 1921, Smock made a recording of the the official municipal hymn of Baltimore (“Baltimore, Our Baltimore”) on a private recording made for and distributed by the Hochchild Kohn Department Store. His only other records were three 12” discs for Victor in late 1902 or early 1903.

2804. 12” Blk. DeLuxe (Victor) 31065 [C-152 etched in matrix]. QUEEN OF SHEBA: How Vain is Man … Lend Me Your Aid (Gounod). Piano acc. This rarity is assigned matrix number C-152 in Volume II of the Moran/Fagan Encyclopedic Discography of Victor

Recordings. They explain, “No listing has been found for this, so it could be a Pre-Matrix record … Placing the selection under this number is an educated guess and also a way of not merely ignoring its existence”. The matrix number lists something else. This is a remarkably forward disc. My guess is that it is a pre-Matrix recording to which a matrix number was attached (incorrectly). A question arises about the speed. If he is singing this excerpt in key, it plays about 87.5 rpm to pitch it correctly. This is an extraordinarily fast speed for a Victor record, but, considering the mysterious nature of Smock’s records, this doesn’t seem particularly surprising. On the other hand, he sang the baritone aria “Il balen” from Il Trovatore as the “heaviest” number on a concert in 1907, which he surely wouldn’t have transposed up. It’s therefore possible that this (Queen of Sheba) aria was transposed down and his voice would be more correctly reproduced here at a speed nearer 78 rpm. I’ll leave that for the winner to decide! Remarkably clean condition. Cons. 2. $100.00.

stral’ ich dich erst / WALKÜRE: Loge, hör’! (Wagner). IMs. Just about 1-2. $15.00. UMBERTO SORRENTINO [t]. Firenze, 1883-New York City, 1959. A pupil of Giorgio

Sulli (one of Mario Sammarco’s teachers), Sorrentino’s debut was likely in Castelfiorentino, Italy, as Fernando in Donizetti’s La Favorita. He subsequently appeared in Arezzo, Siena, Rome, Monte Carlo, Monaco, Nice and other Italian and French venues. In 1906 he toured Central and South America with the Lombardi Opera Company, one of his roles having been Ernesto in Don Pasquale. Interestingly, he was, until first appearing in North America around 1910, known as Umberto Bucchieri. Why Bucchieri was changed to Sorrentino hasn’t been discovered (by me). The rest of his career was in the United States, where he was involved mainly in concerts, occasionally in opera, and as an impresario with his own touring opera company. The last on-stage work of him I could trace was as Humbert Sorrentino in 1944, singing comprimario roles such as Normanno in Lucia and the Messenger in Aida with the Philadelphia-La Scala Opera . His summers included residence in Milford, CT, and at “Villa Sorrentino” someplace on the north shore of Long Island. While in Connecticut he saved the life of a young girl who had capsized in a canoe during a sudden storm. There was also mention of his having been contracted by Edison in 1913 to appear in Kinetophone films as the tenor lead in complete performances of Carmen and Pagliacci, “singing and acting … so that his interpretation will be recorded exactly as when he appears in a performance”. I wonder if this ever progressed beyond the planning stage?

(JAN) JOZEF STERKENS [t]. Antwerp, 1893-Antwerp, 1952. His parents, who owned a laundry, sent Jozef to the Normal School in Ghent to study to become a teacher. Among other classes, he studied music with Emiel Hullebroeck, who recommended that his beautiful tenor voice be cultivated. However Sterkens’ financial situation made voice lessons impossible, so he continued his studies to become an art teacher. He was mobilized during the First World War and was decorated four times for his service. He then worked as an art teacher but was finally offered an opportunity to study voice. In 1927, he made his first big success as Tamino in Die Zauberflöte with the Royal Flemish Opera, also appearing successfully as a concert singer. In 1935 he became Director of the Royal Flemish Opera and after that point sang only on rare occasions. Through various problems he was arrested as a collaborator following the liberation of Antwerp in 1944 and was imprisoned (for the first two weeks in the lion’s cage of the Antwerp Zoo with other collaborators).

ADA LAT(T)IMER STILLMAN [s]. Meadville, PA, 1872-Redlands, CA, 1972. An 1894 graduate of Vassar, she subsequently studied music and voice in Paris. She was married to Leland Stanford Stillman, a banker and “socially prominent” resident of Englewood, NJ, and then Redlands, CA. Not much is known of her career until the 1950s, when she was apparently teaching in NYC. For some unknown reason (to me), the phonograph record collection at the N.Y. Library on 58th Street had been closed for a year and a half. In a letter to the NY Times Editor, Mrs. Stillman mentioned, “As I come in contact with a great many students”, she appreciated the problem and urged the public to help make the funds available to see that the record collection was again available to the public. She also assisted singers with musical coaching and French diction, including Leontyne Price in preparing Carmen, Dorothy Maynor and baritone Jack Langstaff. She was active until the year of her death (at the age of 100).

ANNA SUTTER [s]. Wil, Switzerland, 1871-Stutt- gart, 1910. Sutter first earned a piano diploma at the Bern Conservatory before studying voice. Her vocal debut was at the Volkstheater in Munich in 1892. From 1895 until her death in 1910, she was a leading member of the Staatsoper in Stuttgart. Her repertoire included such parts as Hanna Glawari in Léhar’s Merry Widow, Strauss’s Salome and Bizet’s Carmen. In Salome she was particularly noted for performing the “Dance of the Seven Veils” herself (rather than by a dancer, which was usually done early on) and for her daring costume. She was very much a liberated woman and had a daughter in 1900 and a son in 1902 via unmarried (at least to her) lovers. Her death was a result of being shot after a short affair with Stuttgart conductor Aloys Obrist, who had come to her home to plead for a reconciliation. There at the time was also 27 year old singer Albin Swoboda, Jr., her latest paramour, who was unable to prevent the assassination. She was so popular that supposedly some 10,000 attended her funeral. Her few records are particular rarities. -From articles in Google, Wikopedia and period clippings.

LUJZA SZABÓ [s]. Budapest, 1904-Budapest, 1934. She studied at the local Music Academy and made her debut in 1927 at the National Opera House in Budapest. She caused quite a sensation as the Queen of the Night in Die Zauberflöte at the Städtische Oper, Berlin in 1931 under the baton of Bruno Walter. Szabó also interpreted this role in the same year in Amsterdam as well as for German Broadcast. ELSA SZAMOS(S)Y [s]. 1881 – Budapest, 1924. Born Elza Szamek, she studied with Quirino Merli. Her operatic career began in 1904 as a mezzo-soprano with the Budapest Opera, singing Dalila, followed by Carmen. She also sang as a guest at the Vienna Hofoper. Changing to a soprano, Szamossy shortly after created the role of Cio-Cio-San in Madama Butterfly for Budapest (where she was praised by Puccini for her ‘delicious interpretation’) and for New York, both in 1906. The New York performance was in English under the auspices of Henry Savage at New York’s Garden Theater, followed by a U.S. tour. She returned to the Budapest Opera to sing a variety of roles, the last having been Marta in d’Albert’s Tiefland. Her operatic career ended in 1913 because of vocal problems.

Mrs. SYDNEY (B.?) THAYER [ms?]. In the 1920s and 1930s (perhaps longer), Mr. and Mrs. Thayer lived in Haverford, PA. I don’t know anything about her musical studies, other than that she spent one summer (around 1920) at baritone Oscar Seagle’s Summer Music School at Scroon Lake, NY. Her name appears as a supporter of various musical activities in the Philadelphia area, including the Philadelphia Orchestra. The record below has a plain white label with “Mrs. Sydney Thayer” written in pencil. It seems to be an early electric recording, judging by sound, with cello and piano.

JEAN THESLÖF [b]. Uleåborg, Finland, 1884 – Miami, FL, 1966. The first mention I could find of Theslöf’s early career was with the Century Opera in 1914 as a cover in Victor Herbert’s Natoma. He was possibly here at that time as a guest and then returned to Finland. 1925 is noted as when he emigrated to the United States, founding a singing school in New York. He also competed in four events in sports shooting at the 1924 Summer Olympics.

ANNY THOMAS-SCHWARTZ [s]. Koblenz, 1872 – Frankfurt am Main, 1927. She studied at the Cologne Conservatory with Edward Thomas, whom she married. Her debut was in Strasbourg, 1892, as the Countess in The Marriage of Figaro. She subsequently was heard in a host of German theaters. Her repertoire included Fidelio, Agathe (Freischütz), Aida, Brünnhilde, Desdemona, Aîda, Rezia (Oberon), Norma, and Isolde, to name a few. In addition, she was a noted oratorio and concert artist. Judging from the rare record below, she certainly was one of the major artists of her era.

WILLY THUNIS [t]. A singer (born in Holland, named Theunis) and film actor, Thunis was the leading tenor in the 1932 Paris (Gaité-Lyrique) premiere of Lehár’s Land of Smiles, conducted by the composer. 1934 marked his film debut as a star in the French film N'aimer que toi. He seems to have left France the following year and is then found in the U.S. ten years later, appearing in uncredited roles in such Hollywood films as The Razor’s Edge and S.O.S. (both 1946) and others during the 1944-46 period. Also sharing uncredited screen parts the same years was Olga Marie Thunis (including one instance of both being in the same film), perhaps a second wife or a daughter?

NADINE (NADEZHDA) TIMOFEYEVNA VAN BRANDT [s]. See also: LEV SIBIRYAKOV [bs]. Kiev 1882 - Nice 1948. In the late 1890s, Van Brandt appeared at the Teatro Olimpia in St. Petersburg. Then from 1898 to 1901 she studied under Désirée Artôt de Padilla in Paris, later preparing further there with Mathilde Marchesi. One source indicates that she appeared with the Opéra-Comique in 1901-02 and again in 1911, but the Wolff book on the Opéra-Comique fails to mention her in the index. Her appearances otherwise include opera houses and concert appearances throughout Europe and Asia, although not in the largest theaters. Her career appears to have ended by 1918. The exceptional voice and artistry she displays on her records (all made for G&T in Paris, 1907) would indicate a first rank singer. Perhaps someone might know of further biographical details?

He won renown as one of the most memorable singing-actors of the 20th century. NICHOLAS VASILIEFF [t]. Moscow, 1887-Tucson, AZ, 1970. Youngest son of a musical family (his father, Sergei, had been an operatic tenor with the Imperial Opera), he first studied for the priesthood. He left Russia during the Revolution when his father and other relatives were killed. He came to New York and appeared with the Russian Cathedral Choir, also in a male concert quartet as early as 1919. He subsequently sang in opera in area companies. Also, he appeared often in concert, as a soloist in various Russian groups, and as a frequent radio artist. During World War II he worked at Grumman Aircraft on Long Island as a blueprint expert. Following the death of his college aged son in a car accident in 1946, he and his wife divorced, and he spent the rest of his life in Tucson, Arizona, when he conducted a Russian Choir and taught voice, also remarrying. He appears to have made only two private Victor records on 17 July 1929 “for Mr. Stoddard for experimental purposes at the American Piano Co. Laboratories”, according to Victor ledgers.

A pupil of Giannina Arangi-Lombardi in Milan, Vitale began as a coloratura soprano but upon the suggestion of composer Riccardo Pick-Mangiagalli she moved to dramatic repertoire. Success on Italian radio led to 1950 guest appearances at the Paris Opéra, where she appeard as Norma, Aida, Leonora (in La Forza del Destino) and Amelia. In 1951, marking the 50th anniversary of Verdi’s death, Vitale was on RAI in broadcasts of several of Verdi’s less familiar operas, such as Oberto, I Lombardi and Aroldo. In Germany she sang Senta and Elsa and was also a successful lieder interpreter. She left the stage early on, some reporting to remain closer to her family and others because she never reached a desired point of international success. She is mentioned as having taught for a period in the U.S. (where?) and then in having retired to residences in Munsingen (Switzerland) and Milan.

Dr. ALFRED VON BARY [t]. Valletta, Malta, 1873-Munich, 1926. Alfred was originally a physician, as was his father. He worked as such until 1901. While singing in a choir, his voice was discovered by conductor Arthur Nikisch. He then studied voice and in 1902 he immediately became a great success at the Dresden Court Opera as a Wagnerian tenor, making his debut as Lohengrin. He also had great success in Munich and was a leading artist at the Bayreuth Festivals from 1904 through 1914 and a guest at a number of leading German opera houses. As a result of progressive blindness and vocal problems, he retired from the stage in 1918 and studied Catholic theology (he had been baptized Anglican). In 1925 he experienced a stroke and died the following year from another stroke. Despite his position as one of the leading Wagnerian tenors of his generation, Dr. Von Bary left only two recordings of his voice, both 1904 Bayreuth G&Ts.

CARMEN VON SCHEELE (-VIDER) [c]. While von Scheele was a “well received” lieder and oratorio singer, not much is easily discovered about her or her career. The only thing that is known with certainty is that she was the daughter of the famous contralto Ida von Scheele-Müller, who was a member of the Berlin Court/State Opera from 1895 to 1930. Included with the record below are two letters from von Scheele in German to Leo Riemens (both dated in 1934), seemingly with details about her career. – Internet source.

His debut was as Peter Ivanov in Lortzing’s Zar und Zimmermann in 1900 at the Theater des Westerns in Berlin. Beginning in 1904 through 1929, he was with the Düsseldorf Opera, switching to basso buffo roles at about the midpoint of his career there. He also assumed Stage Director work in 1913 and in 1921 was advanced to Senior Producer. Having a repertoire of over 100 roles, Waschow was also heard as a guest at the Berlin and Vienna Court Operas as well as in Amsterdam and Bucharest. PRINCESS WATAWASO (LUCY NICOLAR) [ms]. Indian Island, ME, 1882-Indian Island, ME, 1969. Described in publicity as a “Full-blooded Penobscot Indian Mezzo-Soprano”, the Princess was active in the late ‘teens and 1920s in concerts of songs of the American Indians, mostly in arranged versions by various composers. She would occasionally add groups of other concert repertoire, such as at her Aeolian Hall (NYC) recital debut in 1920, in which she included “Voce di Donna” from Ponchielli’s La Gioconda and Bemberg’s Chant Indou. She and her first husband, a Boston doctor, had divorced. Her second husband, a lawyer, ran off with most of her savings upon the stock market crash of 1929. After vaudeville declined, she wed her third husband, Bruce Poolaw (a much younger Kiowa Indian entertainer from Oklahoma) and retired from show business. They settled in her native Indian Island, where she and her sister, Florence, took up many causes for the betterment of the Penobscot people. These included voting, where she was given the honor of casting the first ballot after the Penobscots were granted suffrage in 1955. – Internet sources

HERMANN WEIL [bs-b]. See: HERMINE BOSETTI [s]. Mühlburg 1876 – New York 1949. Weil was a musically multi-talented individual. He studied conducting with Felix Mottl and directed opera performances in Mainz and Carlsrude. After a mandatory year in the German army, he began voice studies in earnest. He was also a pianist, an interviewer in Musical America noting that Weill was “quite at home in a Beethoven sonata as [he was] in a Wagnerial role”. Weil’s operatic debut was as Wolfram (in Tannhäuser), 1901 in Freiberg. From 1904-33 he was a member of the Stuttgart Opera. He was also heard in leading roles as a guest throughout Germany, including Bayreuth, as well as at Covent Garden and the Metropolitan and Boston Operas. He left Germany in 1939 and became a voice teacher in New York City.

GIULIETTA WERMEZ [s]. Little seems to be known of the life of this gifted coloratura other than appearances she made between 1895 and 1906. The earliest performance traced was in Barcelona, 1895, as Gilda. She spent a season as the Coliseo Recrejos (Portugal), 1900, singing Elvira in I Puritani, Violetta and other such parts and then a season in St. Petersburg in similar repertoire, including Oscar in Un Ballo in Maschera with Krusceniski, Fabbri and Battistini. She was very successful as Gilda at La Scala, and she appeared in a number of other Italian houses in related repertoire. Her youthful voice, with its appealing timbre as demonstrated on her few and rare Zonophone and Pathé records, fully illustrates the reason for her popularity. Why she so quickly disappeared isn’t known. Perhaps marriage? This was, at the time, the reason for a number of women having left the stage early on, particularly if wed to someone of social or aristocratic standing.

AMBROSE WYRICK [t]. Chicago (?), 1891 – Chicago, 1960. Wyrick was a concert tenor and lecturer (“famous star of the opera and concert stage” according to more than one press account) who supposedly made two world tours, appearing in “55 countries”. He was a graduate of the Hinshaw Conservatory in Chicago and sometime along the line studied with Herman Devries, David Bispham and Jean De Reszke. In the U.S. he seems to have been most active from 1919, early on appearing in the Chautauqua circuit. One article refers to him as a “Scotch Tenor” and another (incorrectly) “of the Metropolitan Opera”. He did appear frequently on radio from 1922 on and was known as the “Silver-Toned Tenor”. As was typical of the period, it is likely that some of his credits were doctored by overly ambitious press and publicity folks. At the time of his death he was a speech teacher at the Hyde Park (Chicago) YMCA. As far as I know, the disc below is his only recording.

NADEZHDA ZABELA-VRUBEL [s]. 1868, Kovno/Kaunas, Ukraine-1913, St. Peters-burg. Following graduation in 1891 from the St. Petersburg Conservatory, where she was a pupil of Natalia Iretskaya, Zabela began studies the same year with Mathilde Marchesi in Paris. Her professional debut was in Kiev, 1893. She was married to noted artist Mikhail Vrubel, “the most formidable personality in Russian Symbolist art”, in 1895. He adored her and proposed marriage to her almost upon their first meeting. They had a son, born in 1901 with a cleft lip, who died in 1903. A year before the child’s death, Vrubel was diagnosed with an incurable nerve disease, and by 1906 he was totally blind. He died in 1910. During this period Zabela-Vrubel limited her career, although she performed with the Mariinsky Theater from 1904-1911. She created several operatic roles. In 1899, Rimsky-Korsakov wrote that the role of Marfa in his Tsar’s Bride “was written with her voice and talent in my mind”. He dedicated a number of songs to her, likely including the one below. While his interest in her ran beyond the professional, she was very much in love with her husband, and Rimsky-Korsakov was attached to his wife and children. Her many roles included most major Russian lyric parts as well as Gretel, Desdemona, Micaëla, Marguerite and Nedda, to mention only four. She made only two records, “both “of legendary rarity, in Russia no less than in the West”, in May of 1912. – various Internet sources. DARIA F. ZAKHAROVA[ms]. Kirovograd, 1887-St. Petersburg, 1963. She, too was a graduate of the St. Petersburg Conservatory and from 1910-18 was also a leading artist at the Mariinsky. In later years she taught, gave recitals, and was a stage director. She likewise appears to have made only two records, both on or close to the same day as those of Zabela-Vrubel.

ERMÁ ŽÁRSKÁ (HERMA MARIA ŽÁREŠKÁ) [s]. Olomouc, Bohemia, 1889- ? . Her parents were against her taking up operatic work, but her success in concerts led to it. Studying first in Olomouc, then with Anton Petzoldt in Prague and Alfredo Cairati in Berlin, she appeared with the Prague National Theater the season of 1914-15, making a very successful debut as Elsa in Lohengrin. The Theatre magazine announced her as “a stunning looking young woman of distinguished family and of good artistic repute”. With the present operatic seasons planned years in advance, it is interesting to read that she arrived in New York in November, 1915, expecting her debut to be in Herman Goetz’s The Taming of the Shrew. However it was then changed to Pamina in The Magic Flute, but Žaršká, suffering with a cold, was replaced by Melanie Kurt. It was again as Elsa she was assigned her debut, but she had yet to fully recover. Her illness created a disaster for the debutante, and Emmy Destinn sang subsequent performances of the role. Žáršká was subsequently heard four times as Santuzza in Cavalleria Rusticana and in two Sunday evening concerts. The Musical Courier reviewer mentioned, of her Santuzza, that the voice was “distinctly agreeable”, although the dramatic quality of the role was “hardly a wise choice” for her lyric soprano voice and temperament. She returned to Prague in 1916, and until 1926 was one of the leading singers of the National Theater. In 1919-21 she was a guest as well at the Deutsches Theater in Prague. She also performed successfully as a concert pianist. Žárská’s only records were mostly Bohemian folk songs, recorded for Columbia during her short American stay.

NICOLA ZEROLA [t. Naples, 1876-New York City, 1936. He originally studied architecture, but he left this course soon on to develop his voice. His debut in Naples as Canio in 1902 or Trieste in 1898, depending upon what one reads. His first U.S. appearance was as Rhadames with a small touring Italian opera company at the New York Academy of Music in 1909. His success was such that Hammerstein lured him away for his own company after two performances, followed by various subsequent legal entanglements. Following the closing of the Hammerstein Opera, Zerola next was involved with the Chicago-Philadelphia Opera, singing Raoul (Les Huguenots), Manrico (Il Trovatore) and Otello. He then appeared in London and with various European companies, returning to New York, appearing at the Met the season of 1920-21. There he participated in two Sunday Night Concerts, one being Canio in a concert presentation of Pagliacci. He promptly sued the Met for $250,000 for failure to make full use of his services, but the suit was dismissed. It appears that he remained in the New York area, appearing on occasion in Philadelphia and New York. “Through either inability or disinclination his repertoire was extremely limited”, although one of his later traced performances was interestingly the premiere of a new opera. This was given in Carnegie Hall in 1928, Vanna by Salvatore Virzi, co-starring soprano Bettina Freeman and conducted by Giuseppe Creatore. This was the subject of an “opera jinx”, the NY Times reported, and it was decided to present only the first act of the two act opera. Exactly what the “jinx” was is uncertain, but it likely had to do with some sort of inadequate preparation problem. Maestro Creatore refused in advance to conduct act two and he and the rest of the opera were replaced by “a series of ballet divertissements” directed by someone else. – Internet sources.
