“I grew up about a half-hour drive from the Oblates’ National Shrine of

Our Lady of the Snows. As a child, I visited the Shrine dozens of times,

including many events like the Way of Lights and various cultural programs.

When I felt the calling to religious life, I first attended the diocesan seminary

for a year before I realized that my calling was to become a Missionary

Oblate, the people who had helped to foster my faith at the Shrine throughout

my childhood.”

Señor Jesús, que diste tu vida por nosotros, en infinito amor, sin “si” ni “peros.” Toca el corazón de muchos jóvenes, de la misma manera que tocaste el corazón de Pedro, Andrés, Santiago, Juan, de María Magdalena, de Eugenio De Ma-zenod, de José Gerardo, de José Cebula, de los jóvenes mártires Oblatos de España, de los jóvenes mártires Oblatos de Laos. A través del dolor, la soledad, los sufrimientos y las muertes de muchas personas en nuestro mundo de hoy, mués-trales a los jóvenes lo único importante y duradero: no la fama, ni los bienes materiales, ni el éxito, sino el entregarse para servir a los demás. Permíteles escuchar el llamado a arriesgar la vida sin temor por el bienestar de los demás como Misioneros Oblatos de María Inmaculada. Permíteles descubrir que es dando que reciben, y que su gozo más profundo es responder incondicionalmente con amor como Tú lo hiciste por nosotros. “I had been discerning about the priesthood for

about a year when I attended a ‘Come and See’ held

at the Oblates’ mission in Tijuana, B.C., Mexico. The

‘ah-ha’ moment came when I walked and prayed with

this beautiful family. Though the father was blind and

they were desperately poor, they were united in deep

love and gratitude. Christ opened my eyes to a deeper

reality. I wanted to become a missionary for the most

abandoned and poor.”

“In high school I wanted to grow deeper in my Catholic identity, so I decided

to attend a Catholic college, and that is when my vocation journey really took

a big leap. The Oblates’ local Vocation Director, Fr. Charlie Banks, O.M.I.

suggested that I finish my degree first because I was just a few semesters away

from graduation. It was great advice because it allowed me time to form my

own identity and finish what I had started. I am on schedule to make my final

vows as an Oblate brother in 2022 and I ask for your prayers as I

“I spent the first 24 years of my life in Haiti. In 2000,

I entered the United States with my parents and siblings.

I was fortunate to meet Fr. John Morin, O.M.I. who had

been a missionary to Haiti. From him, I learned many

things about pastoral care and I was very impressed by

the way he devoted himself totally to the local Haitian

community. As a scholastic, I discovered my true self

while living in an international community. As a priest, I want to be able to

serve as a connecting bridge between God and His people.”

Disasters and pandemics don’t deter Fr. Tony Rigoli, O.M.I. from meeting the

needs of the poor in New Orleans. He arrived at St. Jude Shrine in 2005 just a

few months before Hurricane Katrina devastated the area. He spent years helping

people who had lost everything rebuild their lives. Last year, Fr. Tony expanded

the missions outreach efforts to help people struggling during the Covid-19

pandemic. More than 250 meals a day are now served to the homeless at the

St. Jude Community Center. “This is truly Oblate work,

we are caring for those most in need,” said Fr. Tony.

Los desastres y las pandemias no disuaden al Padre

Tony Rigoli, O.M.I. de satisfacer las necesidades de los

pobres en Nueva Orleans. Llegó al Santuario de San

Judas en el 2005, pocos meses antes de que el huracán

Katrina devastara el área. Pasó años ayudando a las

personas que lo habían perdido todo a reconstruir sus vidas. El año pasado, el

Padre Tony amplió los esfuerzos de alcance misionero para ayudar a las personas

que luchan durante la pandemia del Covid-19. Actualmente se sirven más de 250

comidas al día a las personas sin hogar en el Centro Comunitario de San Judas.

Father David is part of the Oblate’s formation team

in San Antonio, Texas. There he shares his missionary

experiences, which began in 1967 in Japan, with the

seminarians. After nearly ten years in Japan, Fr. David

ministered for more than 20 years primarily to poor

Mexican immigrants in California. In 2006 he became a

missionary to China where he served until recently joining

the U.S. formation team. In China, Fr. David was involved

in helping orphaned and impoverished children receive

an education.

El Padre David es miembro del equipo de formación

oblata en San Antonio, Texas. Allí comparte sus experiencias

misioneras, que comenzaron en el año 1967 en Japón, con los

seminaristas. Después de casi diez años en Japón, el P. David

atendía principalmente a los inmigrantes mexicanos pobres en

California por más de 20 años. En el año 2006 llegó a ser un

misionero en China, donde sirvió hasta hace poco tiempo después se

convirtió en parte al equipo de formación de los Estados Unidos.

En China, el P. David ayudaba a los niños huérfanos y empobrecidos

a conseguir una educación.

“My vocation story has no clear beginning because

my call has been a gradual move towards God. I have

known the Oblates since I was born – my father’s uncle

is an Oblate. My discernment began in college. I felt

that something was off and I felt like I didn’t belong

there. I thought perhaps what I wanted and what God

wanted weren’t exactly lining up. While praying,

a very clear idea came to me: religious life. It then

became obvious that God placed wonderful Oblates in my life to show me their

charism in action, caring for the poor and abandoned.”

“La historia de mi vocación no tiene un comienzo claro porque mi llamado ha

sido un paso gradual hacia Dios. Conozco a los oblatos desde que nací; el tío de

mi padre es Oblato. Mi discernimiento comenzó en la universidad. Sentí que

y lo que Dios quería no estaban exactamente alineados. Mientras rezaba, se me

“I grew up in a small village near Ramotswa, Botswana and I attended

Mass at St. Ann Chapel where the Oblates minister. My vocation started

very young because I was so impressed by the priests in the missions. I

wanted to always be like the Oblates, so I became an altar server and

joined several parish youth programs. I joined the

Oblates because of their charism. Oblates are sent

to the poor, and that is what I want to do.”

Thanksgiving Day Día de Acción de Gracias

“Your ways are not my ways, declares the Lord.” (Is 55:8) In my

adolescence, I avoided a relationship with God, and this led me to believe

that I was self-sufficient. At twenty years old, I joined the Mexican Army.

There, I made an effort to live with honor with everything that I had

learned, but gradually I started feeling unsatisfied. This dissatisfaction

led me to leave my Mexican country and migrate to the USA. In San

Fernando, CA I found the Oblate community at Santa Rosa de Lima

Church. There, the parishioners helped me discern my vocation

to the Missionary Oblates through the service of others. I joined

the pre-novitiate with the Oblates in 2008 and was ordained to the

priesthood in January 2020. I feel deeply blessed for being called to

a life of service to God and God’s people.

“Cuando era adolescente, yo estaba distante de Dios. Solo iba a la

iglesia esporádicamente. Me sentía perdido. A los 20 años ingresé al

Ejército Mexicano. Irónicamente, en el Ejército fui entrenado para

matar gente, pero finalmente encontré mi verdadera vocación en salvar

encontré con la Parroquia de Santa Rosa de los Oblatos en San Fernando,

California. La gente de Santa Rosa me dio la bienvenida a su comunidad

Lord Jesus, Who gave Your life for us, in infinite love, without “ifs” and “buts.” Touch the hearts of many young people, in the same way that You touched the heart of Peter, Andrew, James, John, of Mary Magdalene, of Eugene De Mazenod, of Joseph Gerard, of Joseph Cebula, of the young Oblate martyrs of Spain, of the young Oblate martyrs of Laos. Through the sorrow, the loneliness, the sufferings and the deaths of many people in our world today, show to young people the only thing that is important and lasting: not fame, nor material goods, nor success but giving of themselves to serve others. May they hear the call to risk their lives without fear for the welfare of others as Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate. Allow them to discover that it is in giving that they receive, and that their deepest joy is to respond unconditionally in love as You did for us. You who rose from the dead for our salvation and live with the Father and the Holy Spirit now and forever. Amen. Mary Immaculate, model and guardian of our consecrated life, pray for us.
