Prepare for a Great Career! The Design Drafting Technology Program at MiraCosta College prepares students for careers in federal, state and local land-use planning; building and transportation agencies; private architectural, contract and construction companies; and for-profit industrial and manufacturing companies in life science, defense, sport/recreation equipment and various other industries. According to the California Employment Development Department, the mean annual salary for architectural and engineering drafters and technicians in San Diego/Carlsbad/San Marcos is more than $50,000.

Gain Experience Outside the ClassroomActivities outside the classroom include industry tours, internships, trips sponsored by the Engineering Club, and participation in local competitions such as the San Diego County Fair.

CertificatesofProficiencyCertificates of Proficiency are designed to be the first step in a career ladder. They are short-term certificates, typically requiring fewer than 18 units of course work, which introduce students to one aspect of a trade or occupation.

ArchitecturalTechnologyComputer-AidedDesignandDraftingComputer-AidedDraftingElectro-MechanicalDraftingStudents planning to earn an associate degree should meet with a MiraCosta College counselor before or early in their first semester to identify courses that meet degree requirements. The associate degrees listed above require completion of a Certificate of Achievement and general education courses specified in the MiraCosta College Catalog.

MiraCosta’s Design Drafting Technology ProgramThe program offers courses for those who plan to transfer to a university and/or have an interest in a drafting-related career.

The program also provides training for those already employed in fields related to design and drafting. An active industry advisory board and instructors with industry experience ensure all instruction is closely aligned with the needs of local businesses.

Courses are also offered for those who may not be pursuing a career in design and drafting, but who have an interest in, or need to understand, graphic communication.

MiraCosta’s Design Drafting Technology Program uses state-of-the-art technology and software. Computer hardware and software are on a replacement cycle that ensures the college’s CAD lab is using the latest tools. Software subscriptions, including the recently acquired Autodesk Design Institute, guarantee that CAD software such as AutoCAD, Revit, Inventor, 3ds Max, SolidWorks and numerous others are updated every year. The college also just added two rapid prototyping machines and two 3D scanners. With these new additions, students are able to design more and faster!

“The software and hardware used in the college’s drafting, architecture and engineering courses ensures that our students are being trained with the latest and best tools available,” says Design Drafting Technology instructor Paul Clarke.

Design Drafting Technology Certificates & Associate DegreesMiraCosta offers a wide range of classes that meet days, evenings, weekends and online. Students may choose to earn one or more of the following certificates, work toward an associate degree or complete requirements to transfer. For more information about each certificate and associate degree, please contact the Counseling Department at (760) 795-6670 or consult the MiraCosta College Catalog, available at the MiraCosta bookstore or online at www.miracosta.edu.
