Better than the BeSt -MADE IN GERMANY

For over 80 years, every ski leaving our main pro-duction facility in Straubing has been manufactured based on the strictest technical, sporty and ecological standards. Over all of these years, our team of developers and production experts has assembled such a broad pool of experience that these factors are not viewed as limitations, but rather as inviting them to keep devel-oping ever better products. And their success shows that they’re right.

What Will We be seeing in 12/13?Lighter, faster, better? It sounds like a standard mar-keting promise, but in truth it’s precisely the next log-ical step for ski design. This time the focus for optimi-zation was the ski and binding system, including the integration of high-quality materials like Carbon and Aramid in the ski’s frame and nitrogen in the binding components. The end result: weight reductions of up to 20%.

less Weight – more performanceOr more simply better maneuverability, better han-dling, more comfort, less exhaustion and, in the end, more fun! While skis have gotten wider and longer in recent years, we’ve successfully maintained the same weights as last year, and for many models have even managed significant reductions!

Athletic skiers benefit from the added maneuverabil-ity and agility that weight-optimized skis provide. Less ambitious skiers can enjoy easier handling, greater comfort and less exhaustion. Weight-optimized skis react quicker across all ability levels, and in this way contribute to a reduction in body stresses.

V-Werks – classy, light and unsurpassed!Extremely agile, super sporty and above all unbeliev-ably light: We are proud to present V-WERKS, the most uncompromising approach ever to producing skis. This is high-tech par excellence, introduced in the CODE and RTM lines. If extreme variability, edge grip, maneuverability and low weights are a must, then look no further!

the essence of Women’s skiingWhen we introduced BIO-LOgIC, we gave a new face to the world of women’s skiing. Tests, scientific ex-periments and studies helped us learn how to make significant reductions in peak stresses. Now comes the next evolutionary step: BIOLOgIC xtraLIgHT, which uses significantly reduced weight and a rocker shape to bring the technology to a whole new level. Also in the starting blocks: ESSENZA, the new wom-en’s collection for all levels of ambition and expecta-tions. Less exertion, less stress, better performance and even more skiing fun!

VÖLKL WORKBOOK 2012.13

The main Völkl production facility in Straub-ing is regarded as one of the most modern ski production plants in the world and embodies “Made in germany” quality and precision.

As the only ski maker still developing and pro-ducing in germany, Völkl considers the “Made in germany” moniker as a commitment to excellence in our own work and a promise to deliver that quality to our customers. For over 88 years now every ounce of our passion has flowed into generation after generation of ski design. Our location offers us ideal opportu-nities to tackle the many issues of ski design, and we do our best to take full advantage of it.

As a passionate winter sports brand, we’re tre-mendously aware of our responsibility to the en-vironment – and we act accordingly.Bases made of 100% recyclable materials, low quantities of resin, a plastic-free top sheet, and edges composed of up to 60% of recycled steel – all factors that earned an Eco Responsibility Award for the AMARUQ ECO touring ski at the international ISpO sporting goods fair. The AMARUQ ECO is part of the general concept being pursued by Völkl to protect the environ-ment and promote sustainability. It’s a process that runs through every department and work-flow related to ski production. In 2012 we only use biodegradable ECO wax. That means top performance and another step in our own eco-logical responsibility.

Skiing is a technical sport. part of this certainly in-volves the movements of the skier, but it also applies just as much – and probably even more – to the pro-duction of the ski. The more refined the manufactur-ing process, the more sophisticated the engineering, the greater the volume of technology and precision melded together into the design, and the lighter the ski – the easier it is for the skier to harness all that technology for a great day on the slopes.

frontside to backside From the circus of the alpine World Cup to extreme freeriding in Alaska, from bunny slopes to 50° chutes – the world of skiing encompasses an incredibly broad spectrum of challenges. Völkl uses a variety of different technologies to meet them all. Each individual construction is put through count-less test runs prior to serial production. You won’t find us jumping on the bandwagon and trying to ride the coattails of the latest fad. We pursue technolo-gies that bring real improvements to the ski’s perfor-mance and thereby empower the skier.

V-Werks - the poWer of perfectionCarbon, Aramid, »powered by Titanium« – only the best will do for the latest masterpiece from Völkl’s high tech skiworks. Like auto racing engineers, we know that ever gram matters for this series of exclu-sive models. We’ve pushed for the greatest possible weight reductions, without compromising an inch on sustainability or durability. To the contrary, faster and better is what it’s all about!

The fine mix of Carbon, Aramid and »powered by Ti-tanium« permits high precision edge grip and fast-reacting skiing performance with unparalleled ease.

This XTD Transmission (Sidewall) construction is engi-neered in the binding area using hollow carbon shells.

The highly rigid carbon is lightweight but delivers more direct edge grip in the binding area – right in the area where the greatest pressure is applied.

Aramid is used at the tip and tail to replace the Titanal belt. The material is lighter yet provides comparable shock absorption for the exposed zones of the ski – the perfect use for a material so effective at absorbing en-ergy that it is used in bulletproof vests. The fiber struc-ture of Aramid also gives the wider tip and tail zones of the ski greater torsional stability, which contributes to better edge grip.

V-Werks is the ultimate upgrade. For the upcoming season, Völkl is kicking off with special Code Speed-wall and RTM 84 V-Werks editions.

BIO-LOGIC ® xtraLIGHTBetter dynamics, less exertion, easier turns and better protection for the knee joint - that’s BIO-LOgIC. It’s now available exclusively in our new Essenza women’s collection. The impetus to develop the BIO-LOgIC technology came through a study that proved that women skiers, and female athletes in general, suffer a disproportionately high number of knee injuries compared with men. Not because women ski differently, but rather because their anatomy reacts more sensitively to physical stress. The unique performance of this collection is

built with the interplay between ski flex, skier stance and the special geometry of ski models equipped with BIO-LOgIC technology.

BIO-LOgIC has again been successfully improved for the coming season. The integration of the tip rocker in combination with sidecuts that have been individually reconfigured for each model, and an extra-light woodcore, reinforce the positive skiing performance of the construction, and noticeably elevate them to an entirely new level for everyone.

02_bio-logic stanceThe toe area is slightly raised in comparison to the heel, making turn initiation easier. First and foremost, this creates a more dynamic posture with better knee flex angles. The result is a highly efficient, less tiring skiing feel. The hamstring muscle is more active, re-sulting in the utilization of the various knee-stabilizing muscle groups for improved security.

01_bio-logic fleXThe ski’s flex has been adjusted to the special characteristics of BIO-LOGIC GEOMETRY and STANCE. The result is an even more flexible, energy-saving and yet still sporty performance. Turn after turn flows more smoothly and harmoniously.

03_bio-logic geometryDigressive sidecut: The radius in front of the binding is smaller than behind it. Just like a power steering system, this makes quick turns possible and reduces the extreme stresses at the end of a turn. Turning becomes more har-monious and precise.

04_ bio-logic Woodcore xtralightOriginally designed for the high-end V-Werks line, this high-quality, super-light wood core so effectively supports the BIO-LOGIC construction, through increased maneuverability and reduced stress on the skier, that we decided to integrate it into the Essenza collection as well.

05_rockerWhile a tip rocker inherently provides improved agility, when combined with Bio-Logic technology this element takes on an even greater role. The variable edge grip, which changes according to the skier’s speed, delivers relaxed but secure carving through all turns.

Rocker or camber? It‘s a question that seems destined to fuel passionate debate for some time to come. As far as we‘re concerned the answer isn‘t just simple, it‘s right under our noses: BOTH! Each construction style has the upper hand in certain situations and for certain skiers and, when properly integrated into the design, not only extend the ski‘s range but also open the door to even more fun. At Völkl it‘s clear that there‘s no reason to ignore any good design.

The rocker had its origins in off-piste skiing, but when the overall construction has been harmonized properly in terms of flex and sidecut, it contributes plenty of energy to skiing on groomed slopes as well. When used properly, rockers can do more than just master deep, soft snow. They also – or perhaps: especially – deliver a complete new on-piste skiing experience and significantly extend the range and versatility of a range of skis.

When a skier puts weight on a traditional cambered ski, the entire length of the ski contacts the slope. On a rocker ski only the middle section makes contact when the ski is flat. The term rocker refers solely to the curve of the ski and the reverse camber that results from it. Unlike a traditionally cambered ski, the rocker ski is not ‘tensioned’ at all. From a technical point of view, the rocker is in fact really a reverse camber. But that’s only half the story. For top performance a reverse camber ski needs adjustments to the construction, sidecut and binding position.

The extent of the rocker and type also play a major role in performance and skier experience. As you can imagine a tip rocker ski with 2-3 mm of early rise tip will have very different characteristics compared to a full rocker model with 20 mm

FunCtIOnaLItY OF A ROCKER SKIof tip and tail rise. A cambered ski is bent “into shape” by the weight of the skier, forming an arc that dictates the ski’s ideal turning radius. The rockered ski is already formed in the curved shape, making turns easier to initiate as there is no need to first flex-load the ski into shape. This is a decisive benefit for less experienced skiers, as it makes the transition into the edged position significantly smoother.

A skilled skier, more used to the counter pressure of a tra-ditional camber ski, may be intrigued at how much easier it is to initiate turns. The edge actually adapts to the envi-ronment. The greater the edge angle and the steeper the carving angle, the longer the effective edge angle, which provides increased stability and grip.

By mixing and matching flex properties and sidecuts, the skis can be manufactured in different configurations that offer enormous benefits to skiers of various target groups. The exact harmonization of the rocker shape to its flex and sidecut takes on an enormous importance. From a purely theoretical point of view, it’s entirely possi-ble to take a ski and “just give it a bit more bend.” While

ON-PISTE ROCKER & CAMBER COnStruCtIOnlimited in practicality, it would work passably in deep snow. On-piste, though, it would be disastrous. This is why we always fundamentally redesign all of our ski mo-dels when they are made in a rocker construction! In the following chart we show which construction configura-tions from Völkl are intended for which ski lines and which target group.

FuLL rOCker:

Just like in the alpine skiing discipline, the same criteria for selecting a construction applies in the freeski and tou-ring areas. Different constructions predestine the ski for specific situations and target groups. A full rocker shape for alpine situations might have 8 mm of upward bend. A freerider may have double that. The functional principle is the same. Because Völkl freeride and touring skis have to function on hard surfaces as well, we put a great deal of effort into harmonizing the rocker curve with the flex and sidecut so that, just like the alpine skis, they can be used in the greatest possible range of situations.

OFF-PISTE ROCKER & CAMBER COnStruCtIOn

4 REASONS...

fun factor on any steepnessDespite rumors to the contrary, it’s precisely the rocker shape that lets some of the wider models perform splen-didly on the slopes. Naturally, you’re not going to use a ro-ckered Shiro like a Racetiger, but the construction allows you to follow the exact same lines you’d ski off-piste on prepared terrain as well. The fun and fantastic feel of a freeski is there whatever the conditions. The same is true of our touring skis as well. Those skis in particular de-mand flawless functionality whatever the snow conditions. And it’s the rocker design that gives them the necessary flexibility range.

WhY OUR ROCkER LIVES Up TO OUR pROMISES. OUR ROCkERS ARE NOT ABOUT TRENDS. ThEY’RE A COMpLETELY REDEVELOpMENT OF hOW WE SkI, AND hOW WE’LL BE SkIING IN ThE FUTURE. hERE ARE ThE REASONS WhY:

03_sidecut tailored to the rocker

A rocker ski tends to require a less pronounced sidecut to carve through a curve than its cambered counterpart. That’s why you can’t simply rebend an existing camber model into a rocker – the flow and precision of the steering is lost. This is also why the new Mantra received a completely new sidecut.

01_high-precision rocker shape

A uniformly round arc in the rocker area improves the transfer of power and steering precision. The key factor is avoiding buckling and unharmonious transitions. Our rockers flow with tremendous harmony and precision because the shape isn’t “retrofitted” onto an existing ski, but developed from the first approach and engineering of the new molds.

04_tip shape tailored to the rocker design

Opposite to a steep bending curve a softer bent (i.e. flatter) tip lets the ski float easier over the snow, instead of pushing it aside. Yet the upward bend is the most important tool in preventing the ski from digging into the snow. A rocker profile achieves both: a softer but longer upward bend results in the same tip height as a normal ski tip, without the danger of sinking into the snow. We test each model for the perfect tip height and bending curve.

02_optimally harmonized fleX

We conducted intensive tests as far back as 5 years ago on the first kuro. hundreds of prototypes later, it’s clear that a ski must be somewhat stiffer in the front part of the rocker zone to attain its quiet ride and stability. “Overflexing” the front of the rocker makes it harder to steer the ski. All rocker skis are subjected to an elaborate individual harmonization of their flex and team rider tests.

rtM CONSTRUCTIONS3d technology for rocker skisThanks to ski constructions harmonized to different ability levels, skiers ranging from beginner to pros can all find their perfect counterpart.

The RTM 77, 80 and 84 models have a moderate full rocker, that makes the skis unbelievably agile on and off the slopes. The RTMs nevertheless de-liver extreme control, even at higher speed ranges. Thanks to the outstanding power transfer of the ipT

Wideride binding, the extra width of the RTM 80 and 84 remain nimble and precise yet offer more floatati-on for transitional snow and the side country.

The intermediate range features the three models below, the RTM 75 iS, RTM 75 and RTM 73, each out-fitted with a slight tip rocker. The special construc-tion of the ski lets skiers initiate and link turns with exceptional ease, even at rising speeds, helping them gain confidence.

A light but highly stable full rocker shape, paired with an extra wide longitudinal reinforcement above the ski deck. The reinforcement belts are aligned to channel stress toward the outside of the ski. This works with the sidewall construction to prevent chatter and ensure that the neces-sary pressure is applied to the edges at high speeds.

Like the RTM 84, the RTM 80 reinforced 3D construction channels forces to the edges, but in a less pronounced manner. The major difference between the 80 and the 84 is in the cap, rather than sidewall, construction. This makes this full rocker ski more forgiving and a bit softer in its general ride characteristics, yet it still delivers the necessary power reserves for athletic skiers pushing their limits.

The RTM 77 follows a similar construction philosophy, although the reinforcement is somewhat less pronounced, giving the ski a softer feel. Optimized for ambitious intermediates, the ski’s construction provides the edge pressure needed to rise up to the next level of speed and confidence.

Both the normal [RTM 75] and dual woodcore [RTM 75is] versions have a unique 3D design which stabilizes the front of the ski body and transmits forces toward the ski’s center for a comfortable ride. For a tip rocker construction this translates into the stability needed for higher speeds without making turns any less gentle to initiate. At the end of the turn the classically cambered tail provides a clean arc for the curve to follow. The SENSOR models are also produced using this construction principle.

Tip rocker meets pROGRESSive Flex - pROGRESSive Technology! The very moderate reinforcement across the edge in the middle zone of the ski delivers a sufficient degree of stability without reducing ease of initiation. The soft-flexing tail facilitates drift at the end of turn, especially for beginners to low intermediate skiers.

Nothing is more frustrating than the feeling that you’re learning too slowly. The first days out on the slopes are especially decisive in determining wheth-er the skier gives up or continues. The better a ski can adapt to this situation, the greater the fun factor and the more likely it is that the skier will make it to the next level. An entry-level ski should behave simply. Yet a ski that is too strongly oriented toward pure entry-level duty is relative limited in how it can be used. As beginners improve, they’ll quickly hit the limits of their skis and will get frustrated.

pROgRESSive Technology uses its own unique con-cept to counteract this effect: the interplay between pROgRESSive Flex and pROgRESSive Edge allows skiers to initiate turns very gently and with as little energy exertion as possible. However, as the chal-lenges grow and the slopes get steeper, the con-struction offers enough grip to ensure control along the entire length of the ski. The flextail makes it even easier for skiers to transition out of one turn and initiate the next due to the “rolling” effect of the softer tail.

02_progressive edgeVölkl’s pROGRESSive Edge technology refers to a tip rocker shape designed especially for novices and intermediates to make the ski easier to turn. The edge “extends” automatically to provide more stability as the owner’s skiing style becomes more advanced, and more pressure is put on the edges in a turn.

01_progressive fleXThe cross-section of the ski tapers towards the tail – from thicker edges to a thinner center. The rear section of the ski becomes more flexible, which is particularly beneficial at the end of a turn. The ski accelerates less aggressively out of turns and supports a neutral stance to help prevent the skier from sitting in the proverbial “back seat.” The effect is less effort for better turns.

03_progressive XtdThe athletically ambitious variant of the pROGRESSive technology with a wooden core provides extra reinforcement of the tip rocker area for increased stability at higher speeds. MODeLS

pOWER SWITCH is the design-side answer to this challenge. The skier needs only to make one manual adjustment to adapt the ski to the snow conditions and personal mood – a choice between “cruise,” “dynamic,” and “power.”

01_functionAt the twist of a dial, two carbon fiber rods in the ski’s core are either tensioned or relaxed. It’s a fast and direct way to regulate the ski’s stiffness and flex. The mechanism is completely integrated, ensuring flawless long-term functionality even under extreme conditions.

04_poWerThe stiffest setup allows for a more powerful and aggressive skiing style. This means maximum stability on hard, icy slopes and at high speeds.

02_cruiseThe tension is released from the carbon fiber rods. The softer flex is especially well suited for relaxed skiing and easy handling on soft terrain.

The only thing closer to custom-made... is customer-made! Ski flex tailored precisely and individually to the skier, exclusively from Völkl on the Racetiger pSi and Code pSi!

Every single skier places unique and personal demands on his gear: weight, age and ability – those are criteria that only a custom-made ski can precisely reflect. At least, that‘s the way it used to be. Now we present the first ski technology that actually approaches tailor-made: pOWER SWITCH INDIVIDUAL. The new technology is a redesign of our proven power switch

mechanism, which allows on-snow adjustment of the ski to reflect current conditions. Thanks to the new system, the rigidity of the ski can now for the first time be adjusted according to the skier‘s personal physical parameters. The tuning itself is handled by an authorized dealer. A recessed adjustment screw in the tail of the ski allows the specialist to either compress or relax a carbon rod into the ski‘s core.

The flexibility, and thus the grip and agility of the ski, can be modified in this way to achieve a perfectly individualized setup for the skier.

Titanal Top Sheet

During 80% of any given downhill run, a racer is moving on less than 20% of the base, meaning that 80% of the run is spent on the sidewalls, which are therefore the perfect place to show the Speedwall’s potential.

For alpine racing in particular, the development pro-cess never ends. Constructions are adjusted by milli-meters and changes to ratios are made over and over again. If you look at the top ten racers in any given competition, the differences between the finish times are too small to be recognized by the naked eye. The skiers are just too evenly matched. SpEEDWALL technology was designed to give a decisive advantage:

Extreme edge angles, extremely fast direction changes – the more athletic your skiing style, the more important the sidewall of your ski becomes. We devised an ingenious solution to the problem, one that became a feature of two Racetiger models as well as the Code Speedwall. The trick is not to see the sidewall as a lateral limitation of the ski, but rather as a logical continuation of the running surface.

For this reason it’s made of exactly the same mate-rial as the base – which means the Speedwall can also be waxed. The benefit for the racer is clear: less friction, more speed!

SKIN PIN

NEW12

13The requirements were clear for our touring ski line: top performance and reduced weights without com-promising on durability. While Völkl’s lineup of touring skis is already among the lighter representatives on the market in relation to their size, the increased use of carbon and weight-optimized Multi-Layer Woodcore Light cores have,

once again, achieved improvements that ensure the models have no need to shy away from direct compa-risons with the competitors and the downhill perfor-mance will keep you smiling. The new material mix provides particular support for the collection’s free-rider oriented skiing characteristics: power transfer and high rigidity.

A skin clamping system that’s been reduced to the essentials: perfect attachment yet extremely simple to use, meaning full functionality without the unnecessary extras! The skin is affixed to the ski’s tip using a built-in pin. One 90-degree rotation and it’s attached. The result is a 100% reliable mount. The system can be checked visually from above, ensuring the touring skier has complete control at all times. In a pinch, the hole in the ski tip can also be used to convert the skis into a rescue toboggan or a sled.

Each Völkl skin is perfectly cut for the respective touring ski model.

All that’s needed to fix the SkIN pIN and Völkl skin in place is one 90-degree rotation. The skin can now be precisely aligned and adhered.

To apply the skin, push the SkIN pIN through the eyelet from below and “hang” it into the ski.

We’re now also offering a new touring pole collection, effective immediately. all information about the touristick line can be found on page 87.

The beauty of perfection - so beautiful, so quick, so powerful. Its look alone speak volumes about the po-tential of the V-Werks series. Tuning is the name of the game nowadays, and only the best will do for V-Werks. The mix of Carbon, Aramid and powered by Titanium materials allows

us to build a ski that’s thinner, yet at the same time tough, lightweight and faster reacting. The ‘normal’ Code Speedwall and RTM 84 models are already ma-sterpieces of outstanding skiing performance. Add in V-Werks tuning, and it’s like a ski on steroids – but 100% legal!

CHARACTER

IDEAL USE

Extremely athletic yet astoundingly light and precise to control. The high-end construction with Carbon and Aramid translates into lower weight yet unsurpassed quickness in reacting, as well as maneuverability and agility. The full rocker on the RTM and the tip & tail rocker on the Code Speedwall ensure smooth turn initiation, but don’t be fooled – these two models deliver the kind of high-caliber skiing performance that aggressive skiers dream about.

To the limit. These skis are made to test the limits. Both V-Werks models are designed for elite skiers who spend most of their time on-piste, even if the RTM 84 is more than capable of cutting a fine figure away from the groomed terrain.

Almost everything about this new series from Völkl has a lightness about it – these skis have a playful, light design, are extremely easy to control, are significantly lighter than their predecessors, and are also lighter than the known competition. Only two things about them are heavyweight: quality and performance. Here too the Essenza line sets new

benchmarks for engineering in women’s skis. The synthesis of BIO-LOgIC xtraLIgHT and Tip Rocker construction guarantees that there’s a perfect model for every skiing ability. Whether the skier has an athletic, progressive style or is just learning how to tie together turns on soft terrain, the Essenza line from Charisma to Adora covers the entire spectrum.

Compared to the Attiva collection, the Essenza models are significantly wider but lighter. The new BioLogic xtraLIGhT construction, harmonized with the tip rocker shape that is built into all of the models, provides a significant weight reduction without compromising on durability. The Adora and Aurena come with pROGRESSive Technology to op-timally nurture new skiers. Flexible: RTM 84 and 80 take full advantage of the Wideride bindings to retain all of their supreme sportiness and plenty of ability to set an edge. With a full rocker shape to keep turning easy, they are set to thrive in any condition. Even with a somewhat narrower build, the full rocker shape of the RTM 77 puts it squarely among the big boys, with an outstanding price/performance ratio based on its sporty feel on the snow. The RTM 75 and 73 are particularly recommended for ambitious beginners who want to push the boundaries from the start.

This family of skis has a wider range of uses than any other in the Völkl range: The RTM 84 and 80 come with a tip width of 129 and 126 mm respectively, in-cluding a full rocker shape and ipT Wideride binding. Thanks to the width of the ski, they retain all of their supreme off-piste sportiness. The RTM 75 and 73 are impressive entries in the beginner and intermediate range through their pROGRESSive Technology with a soft tip rocker.

A CODE FOR THE NEXT LEVELthe CODe

A new dimension in frontside skiing. The Code is clearly defined for an audience of very strong skiers. Bring en-ough talent to the table and this ski knows no limits. It is a masterpiece of agility and maneuverability. There’s not a curve radius in existence that it can’t tackle with style, and no trail that seems too steep, hard or bumpy.

The Code specifications were kept strictly under wraps last year, but extreme demand has convinced us to pull back the curtain for the coming season.

CHARACTER

IDEAL USE

Elite level performance. The Code models for the coming season are now all outfitted with the new sMotion binding system. The improved, even more direct power transmission supplied by the binding brings this ski to a whole new level of performance. The tip & tail rocker ensures smooth initiation of turns, but put them on edge and they grip like nothing else on snow.

Both Code models are clearly intended for on-piste use by athletic skiers. The underlying concept is clear: these skis are designed with an intelligent tip & tail rocker that lets skiers choose a ski approxi-mately 10 cm longer than a comparable ski with a classic cambered shape.

Boundless carving enjoyment from day one, respon-siveness that grows with the skier’s ability — that’s the credo of the three Sensor models.

Early positive experiences during instruction are one of the key factors in captivating interest, particularly in

the adult target group. If the skis do not provide the feedback and assistance for positive experience, atten-tion wanes and interest can be lost. Add an additional factor like bad weather and we risk losing a potential long-term customer. The Sensor models are the solu-tion in these circumstances.

progressive. Just like on the adult models, the goal here wasn’t simply to shoehorn a rocker shape into a junior ski. Instead, every individual ski was redesigned from the ground up to feature a tip rocker harmonized with the length and sidecut to guarantee perfect skiing performance.

Because children don’t weigh enough to bend the wooden core on shorter lengths, all junior models are intentionally outfitted with composite cores. That ensures that the skis react good-naturedly and forgivingly yet still provide a sporty ride as the skier’s skills improve.

Numerous tests and experi-ments in ski schools have proven that young skiers who use tip rockered beginner skis experi-ence significantly greater learn-ing success. It’s one of the areas where tip rockers have a clear benefit over the classic camber construction. Our answer to this? A completely reworked series of children’s and junior skis for the 12/13 season.

Freeriding – endless cliffs, pristine slopes, pure adrenaline... no question, that’s what freeriding is all about. Skiing freely and without limits.

Making this cliché a reality involves a great deal of technology and development work below those color-ful designs. The complexity of building a freeski that is up to today’s requirements cannot be understated.

As a result we put the same amount of care into our off-piste collection as we do for each alpine racing ski. As always, our R&D team is supported in this ef-fort by our freeride team. No event, no contest, no trip takes place without also being used to test and improve the individual models. Every fiber of every individual ski holds in its core the full passion of the Völkl family.

CHARACTER

IDEAL USE

Young, wild, playful and enormously flexible. If you look just at the sidecut characteristics, the three models look very similar. The differ-ences are much more apparent if you look at the width column. The Shiro’s full rocker high shape, for example, makes it impressively energy conserving and gives it a good-natured feel despite its size. The gotama also stands out thanks to its extremely simple skiing performance, although it reacts a bit quicker. The Bridge is a real all-mountain freeski that delivers both outstanding off-piste turns and a fine performance in the park & pipe. All three models have tails bent strongly upward for spontaneous switches.

Universal off-piste. While the Shiro is perpetually pointed toward the deep snow, the gotama and its moderate full rocker shape deliver a ride that’s astoundingly agile and lively off- and on-piste. Bridge, the narrowest ski in the trio, is even locked and loaded for some time in the park & pipe.

The sidecuts and flex are individually tailored to the tip and full rocker low on the Katana and the tip rocker on the Mantra and Kendo.

The Katana is the team’s weapon of choice for big mountain competitions on steep drops, while the Mantra achieves zen on almost any terrain. The symmetrical Wall is designed to satisfy our demanding park & pipe team, with a very rigid, direct flex profile and carbon reinforcement for highly agile control. The non-symmetrical Alley is also built with a cambered construction, but is tangibly softer to meet the needs of new freestylers. The new player on the team is the Kink – with a sidecut that lends this non-symmetrical ski an extra dose of versatility and simple handling, supported through the tip & tail rocker. Also completely redesigned and decked out with tip & tail rocker are the Step and Ledge, engineered for uncompromising assaults on all obstacles in the park. The Ledge comes with a rocker shape and is wider than its predecessor. The Step is structured in the same way as the Ledge, but with higher-quality components, such as a racing base.

Freestyle. While kicker-oriented models like the Wall are designed in a camber construction to ensure speed and preci-sion control, the Alley, Kink, Step and Ledge feature a tip & tail rocker for top handling in the pipe and on rails. art. no.

OFF-PISTE BEAUTIES

While last year’s KIKU already boasted a full rocker and the AURA sported a soft tip rocker, this season the KENJA joins the club with a tip rocker and new sidecut.pYRA is a bit wider than her predecessor and comes with a moderate tip & tail rocker that makes the ski extremely playful and quick to react.

The pYRA has taken the pRL’s place out in the pipe, supported by the gEM model for beginners. The KIKU really shows off its skills in the powder, while the AURA whistles toward the valley with confi-dence whatever the conditions. For girls with a taste for speed, KENJA is the destination of choice - includ-ing the same upper and lower Titanal belts found in the AURA for a more dynamic ride.

Ane Enderud, Ingrid Backstrom, grete Eliasen, Jen Hudak and Virginie Faivre all put their trust in Völkl, and for good reason. Whether in competition or on expedi-tions, our women’s team always skis at full throttle and needs materials that can meet that challenge, which is just what we give them.

Young freestylers can strap on the Kink Jr and pyra Jr, both with low full rocker shaping. And for even the youngest skier who is ready to tackle the kicker in style, the line is rounded out by the Mini Kink Jr. Unlike its bigger brothers, this version is completely flat to account for the skier’s weight.

Because small skiers love big turns too, we offer a junior freeski program delivering uncompromising performance perfectly attuned to youthful proportions. The Shiro Jr and gotama Jr, both with medium full rocker constructions, stand ready for off-piste excursions.

The Völkl touring collection offers a complete spectrum ranging from all-round touring skis to touring freeriders. All Völkl touring skis are al-ways intended for highly flexible use, with a focus on enjoyment, comfort and performance during the climb and boundless fun during the descent. In particular for mountain guides and freerid-ers who discover the joys of touring but won’t go

without their wide skis, the Völkl touring line is a favorite. stei steurer, a swiss mountain guide who loves spending time on the nunataq, says: “I have abso-lute trust in the quality of Völkl’s skis. Nunataq and its moderate full rocker and Nanuq with a tip rocker both offer boundless freeride potential paired with weight and workmanship that lives up to the tough demands of touring.

arthur lanthaler, a mountain and ski guide and state certified ski and snowboard instructor from tirol: “My preferred ski for long tours and high-altitude tours is the Nanuq in 177. It’s the ideal ski for all kinds of snow conditions.”

stei steurer: “The rocker shape has major benefits for touring skis as well – when moving through tracked snow on the climb, the tip always stays above the snow, but on harder tracks the edges can bite in right where they need to, namely under the boot.“

When the aim is to tackle ThOSE runs, the kind of mountain faces that normal on-piste skiers just can’t reach, then the Nunataq and Nanuq are primed and ready to serve the needs of freeride-oriented touring skiers.

CHARACTER

IDEAL USE

Whether it’s the Amaruq or Mauja in the classic camber construction or the Inuk, now joined by the Qanik and Nukka, with tip rocker shapes, the ski handles any terrain with style and stands out through its comfortable skiing performance, magnificent craftsmanship and light-weight courtesy of the Multi Layer Woodcore Light. Qanik and Nukka have been completely redesigned this year to accommodate the tip rocker construction. The entire structure of the ski, and in particular the sidecut, has been precisely adapted to the tip rocker shape to guarantee optimal skiing and climbing performance.

We consider a touring ski to be ‘universal’ if it can function along the complete spectrum of touring and all its facets. Whether small half-day trips or a full week excursion.

The perfect set-up – our skis perform at their absolute best when combined with the Marker Motion binding collection.Ski and binding come together as a single unit. The perfectly tailored binding can be decisive in

improving a ski’s performance. Marker and Völkl recognized this long ago and have been working together for years on binding systems that offer optimal performance, free gliding, security and light weight.

aLPIne BINDINGS

For skis wider than 80 mm, traditional bindings systems make the skier work harder for the same performance. Marker and Völkl developed the ipT Wideride system with a contact surface width 30% greater than standard. On top of that, the binding is mounted significantly closer to the edge of the ski. This helps the energy flow more directly and continuously to the edges. They make wider skis more agile, responsive and easier to control. The skis are better in tune with the skier’s signals and application of pressure and edge for a precise and powerful characteristic.

for ski models 80 mm and wider

The joint innovation from Marker and Völkl is a redevelopment of the award-winning ipT Wideride binding and has been specially engineered for medium-width Völkl ski models (70-79mm).

for ski models up to 79mm. Wide construction for perfect edge grip and power transfer

Optically adapted to the ESSENZA collection and featuring the Twincam heel for greater comfort, the eMotion line is the ideal high performance women’s system binding. The Triple pivot Elite Toe delivers top power transfer and sensationally reliable security in a system that has been engineered for the perfect balance between light weight and performance.

performance meets Style

The rMOTION bindings system was developed by Marker and Völkl especially for the new RACETIGER GS SpEEDWALL and SL SpEEDWALL models. Just like in the World Cup, the rMotion ensures the broadest possible contact surface - using a race plate – for optimal power transfer. The free-gliding plate is fixed beneath the skier’s heel for more punch at the end of the turn.

The sMotion binding system is constructed very similarly to the SpeedRide. Wider rails ensure optimal power transfer. The significant weight savings also provide easier handling.

The Marker Völkl system for skis narrower than 70 mm. Outfitted with a compact heel for the intermediate skier range and Twincam for advanced and expert skiers. Variations include the Biotech toe pieces for intermediate skiers and Biometric pro toe pieces for use on high-end skis.

Impressive skiing performance, light weight and easy flex for pSi ski models.

The growing demand for wider skis, especially in the mid-range price segment, has inspired the development of a new binding system. The 4Motion is the solution. power transfer across all 4 rails leads to superior energy transfer and uninhibited flex. The 4Motion is the first binding system to offer full compatibility with the i.roc concept from Dalbello.

i.rocThe unique AFD gliding plate automatically accommodates both the ISO-norm soles and the new Dalbello i.roc sole adapter. The i.roc sole combines a slightly rockered form with special grip zones and power transfer zones for optimum skiing performance and improved walking security.

If you look at a junior or children’s ski, the binding zone takes up a disproportionately large part of the overall ski length. Traditional binding systems typically stiffen up that section of the ski. For longer ski lengths this is only a small impediment to a properly round flex. For children’s ski models, however, that stiffness represents a major restriction to the general functionality of the ski. Our developers recognized the problem and premiered a junior version of the 3Motion bindings system for shorter ski lengths during the 08/09 ski season. The benefit: by separating the attachment rails into two pieces, the Junior 3MOTION no longer disrupts the flex behavior in the decisive binding zone. When put on edge, the ski carves a perfect curve and makes skiing even simpler for kids. At the same time, the Junior 3MOTION also fulfills all technical requirements for maximum security.

Free flex for children’s ski lengths

Since it was introduced, the Völkl Touring team has exclusively used the Marker tour-ing binding line. The F12 and F10 feature a freeride-oriented frame construction that delivers fantastic power transfer even in difficult snow conditions. They are produced using Hollow heel technology that keeps them amazingly light yet tremendously

convenient thanks to easy-to-use climbing aids and a tremendous degree of security during the descent.

stei steurer, swiss mountain guide:“Coming back down in hard, steep terrain is no problem when you’re using the Marker Tour binding!”

The bindings of the Marker Royal Family have been, and remain, the gold standard for freeride bindings. Since the introduction of the first DUKE model, this line has come to shape the market. From the Free Ten for beginners and youths to the Jester pro with Din values up to 18 for hard-core freeriders, there’s a binding to handle any demand that can be made by today’s freeride and freestyle skiers.

For this coming season it’s the Duke’s turn in the innovation spotlight, with an extra dose of energy that threatens to eviscerate existing standards. The new DUKE features expanded contact points that now fit more snugly onto the ski than any previous freeride binding. This ensures that every last ounce of power is transferred to the ski and not even a little is lost! And once again the inven-tor of the category has reinvented the standard.
