Three-Time Intern, Now a Researcher

I remember the first time all the interns met with the Managing Director of TNS Korea, and he promised us that TNS would give interns two things during the internship: networking and valuable experience. Throughout the process, I learned from the profes-sionals and also met great interns who I still keep in touch with even though they’ve left TNS a long time ago.

Advice for Incoming Interns

So, if you are someone applying for the TNS internship, you might be wondering what kinds of tasks you will be assigned and how to learn valuable lessons from the professionals. I will briefly mention the three main tasks interns do at TNS. First, most interns work on translations. There are tons of documents that need to be translated, from short surveys to 200-300 page reports. I am not telling you this to scare you. In fact, you can actually learn from the translations if you pay attention to the contents. It is a rare opportunity to see full reports written by professionals, which contain a lot of information.

Second, you will do some desk research, which you will have no clue about. It is always difficult to find the requested information. However, throughout the process, you will learn about things that you’ve never even heard of, which will expand your knowledge. Lastly, you will be assisting in fieldworks such as conducting interviews, focus group discus-sions (FGD), gang surveys, ideation workshops, and more. The fieldworks I’ve mentioned are really exclusive and will give you the rare opportunity to directly hear the voice of customers.

Of course there are many different tasks that you will need to do other than the three that I’ve mentioned, but if you actively participate in and are eager to learn from the tasks that are given, I am sure you will earn memorable experiences and valuable lessons that will last a lifetime.

Personal Development

I can’t believe that the four month internship has already come to an end. In early 2014, I started working at TNS as an intern as part of the 43rd wave. I had no idea at the time that

I would become interested in market research, but now I am considering a career in it. Throughout the entire 8 months of my internship, I saw and learned a ton

about the market research industry. I was sometimes able to directly partici-pate in the process of market research projects, along with important research activities such as online surveys, FGDs, Super Group workshops, etc. I was amazed by how a customer’s words and behavior can turn into valuable information that directly relates to the increase in sales. By conducting fieldwork and writing a report, a meaningless set of numbers

could be turned into data, and then used as insights that can direct a company’s marketing strategy.

I thank TNS for giving me the opportunity to learn and experience what market

research is all about. Also, I thank the 46th wave fellow interns for the great memories, such as coffee time in the morning in the book café, and running around Insa-Dong and Gwang Hwa Mun during the intern workshop. I will never forget you and I will miss you all.

Business Trip to the Middle East

Visiting the Middle East on my own? Chances are slim.Earlier this month, my team manager offered me to go on a business trip to the Middle East to conduct a study on Arabic women as potential customers of automobiles. Although the 3-week work schedule was expected to be exhausting, I immediately accepted the request, which involved travelling to the UAE, Egypt and Jordan. I had noth-ing to lose; not to mention the travel expenses would be fully covered by the company. This business trip gave me the opportunity to understand what it’s like to live in the Middle East. Hearing first-hand from the actual citizens, I was shocked by how much we share the same thoughts. Following through the real lives of Egyptians and Jordanians was far more interesting than touring the Pyramids or the Petra. As a bonus, working together with researchers from TNS Egypt, Lebanon, and Dubai was a blast!
