Message from Chairman
Dear Members,
We had the visit of R10 Director Dr. Kukjin Chun from Seoul National University
this month, which really brought our Section to the main focus. It was welcoming
that Dr. Kukjin chose to visit IEEE Madras when he had the choice of visiting
many other Sections. Mr. Harish Mysore, Director, IEEE India Operations joined
him during this visit. In his short trip of one day, he was keen in visiting a student
branch. He was taken to SSN College of Engineering by the Vice Chairman Mr.
H.R. Mohan where he had an interactive session with the student and professional
members. He then visited the Section office and also had a meeting with the
execom members of the IEEE Madras Section in the evening and reviewed the operations of the Section.
One of the facts which I would like to highlight is the need to have quality events under our Section. Of
late there is a tendency for faculty in colleges to start chapters of various societies with the minimum
number of members. It is true that one can do it as per rule. But the society should grow and not remain
with the college. By society, it is meant that a particular area of engineering which it represents would
grow by having peers in that area. It is also not fair to take up multiple societies in which one has not
worked at all, just for the sake of staring a new society. These are not matter of rules of IEEE but a matter
of one’s own choice. For example, a person who has been working in the area of control system may not
take up starting a society on industrial electronics or such other areas in which he or she is not working. It
is only a matter of self-discipline and not a matter of rule created by IEEE. This has led to mushrooming
of societies with little or no interest among members and with limited activities confined to a limited
geographical area and sometimes within the institute itself. When the faculty who started the same leaves
and proceeds to another city, the society has a natural death as it is not based on peer interest group. He or
she then goes to the new geographic area and starts all over again. Hence I request that new societies may
be started based on real interest and with members from other institutions too and not restricted to one or
two institutions.
Similarly as indicated earlier, the student branch revamping is in its last phase. Dr. Elangovan and Mr.
Mohan have been doing a good job in this. I am sure the revamped student branches will really be active
and vibrant and will not go to the background. I request the branch counselors to be on their toes to keep
up the momentum.
We have come to the end of academics for the final year students, with many already taking up lucrative
jobs. My request to them would be to continue their IEEE membership as professionals so that they can
benefit in their career by the various initiatives of IEEE.
Till next time,
Yours voluntarily
M A Atmanand

Er. Bhoja Shetty Past Chairman, IEEE Madras Section
Born: 16th
Aug 1925 :: Demise: 23rd
June 2017
Er. Bhoja Shetty was a graduate in Electrical Engineering from College of Engineering
Guindy. He belonged to the 1948 batch. He was a pioneer and trendsetter in many areas.
Blessed with a very handsome personality, he was a born leader. He joined IEEE in early
1970 and was actively involved in the IEEE India Council activities. He was one of the earliest to be elevated as
Senior Member. Er. Bhoja, Er. V. Srinivasan (now chairman of W.S Group), Mr. E.N. Narayananswamy (then Jt.
Director of Industries) and Mr. M.V. Chauhan ( Ham Veteran in India) brought IEEE to Madras.
When he became the Chairman of Madras Section in 1981, he made sure that the membership was opened to all
branches of Electrical, Electronics, Computer and Telecommunication Engineering. He along with Mr. M.V.
Chauhan, Mr. H. Kalayansundaram and Mr. C. R. Sasi developed a strong student base by opening a number of
student branches and by obtaining special discounts for the student members.
Mr. Bhoja also made use of his excellent Rotary contacts and made inroads into the government departments like
EB and PWD to get members. Because of him we had the support of Mr. Panroti Ramachandaran (IEEE Senior
Member and Minister), Mr. Murari( Chairman of EB), Mr. Mohanakrishnan (Chief Engineer PWD), Mr. N. Kumar
(Sanmar group) etc., to add new members. He also encouraged starting Power Engineering Society Chapter and
Engineering Management Society Chapter.
During his tenure the section membership grew from 200 to 2000. Today if IEEE Madras Section enjoys, the high
recognition in IEEE globally the credit goes entirely to Mr. Bhoja. His demise is a great loss to all our IEEE
fraternity. We hereby share the grief with his family. May his soul rest in peace.

2020, increasing connected devices by more than 13-fold to 2.7 billion units by then, according to NASSCOM.

Immigrating to the U.S.? These Tech Services Say They Can Help: If you're thinking of moving to the United
States, you might be concerned that now isn't a good time. The wall hasn't been built, but President Donald Trump
has kept his promise to crack down on immigration into the country. Those measures come on top of what is already
a maze of an entry system that politicians on both sides have long called broken. A crop of tech companies aim to
ease these problems. They've developed software to make the process easier to navigate, promising to save users
time or money versus working through a regular immigration attorney. "That type of technological development
would greatly lower the cost, because right now it's generally regarded as the second-most complicated portion of
American law after the income tax," said Alex Nowrasteh, an immigration policy analyst at the Cato Institute think
tank. Here's a look at a few. Story
Self-Driving Buses and Robot Aides Could Double Singapore’s Growth Rate: In technology-proficient
Singapore, their integration into the economy could help the domestic growth rate to almost double and significantly
lift labor productivity, according to a report by consultancy Accenture. It found that artificial intelligence, once fully
adopted, might lift Singapore’s annual growth rate to 5.4 percent in 18 years. That would be the largest increase
among 33 countries studied and would translate into an additional $215 billion in gross value added. Without AI, the
economy is predicted to expand 3.2 percent. Story

How artificial intelligence can deliver real value to companies: After decades of extravagant promises and
frustrating disappointments, artificial intelligence (AI) is finally starting to deliver real-life benefits to early-adopting
companies. Retailers on the digital frontier rely on AI-powered robots to run their warehouses—and even to
automatically order stock when inventory runs low. Utilities use AI to forecast electricity demand. Automakers
harness the technology in self-driving cars. In our survey, early AI adopters that combine strong digital capability
with proactive strategies have higher profit margins and expect the performance gap with other firms to widen in the
next three years. Story to download the 80 pages discussion paper on Artificial intelligence: The next digital

Unleashing innovation through internal hackathons: Hackathons have become an increasingly popular approach
for organizations to both test their new products and services as well as to generate new ideas. Most events either
focus on attracting external developers or requesting employees of the organization to focus on a specific problem.
In this paper we describe extensions to this paradigm that open up the event to internal employees and preserve the
open-ended nature of the hackathon itself. In this paper we describe our initial motivation and objectives for
conducting an internal hackathon, our experience in pioneering an internal hackathon at AT&T including specific
things we did to make the internal hackathon successful. We conclude with the benefits (both expected and
unexpected) we achieved from the internal hackathon approach, and recommendations for continuing the use of this
valuable tool within AT&T. https://goo.gl/PczlZT

And yet, at the same time, budgets are shrinking, demand is growing and pressure on the IT organization to show
value is at an all-time high. As an executive, you have the full force of your business behind you and more options

grows, the way of building feature-rich applications gets considerably more complicated. Nowadays it's not that
easy to satisfy customers with a basic online presence as everyone wants to see you updated as per the latest
technological trends. However, the burden can be reduced largely if your developers are well-versed with the latest
web development frameworks. As there is a huge number of web development frameworks currently available, it
can be a daunting task for you to choose the right one for your next web development project. Here in this post, we
are going to discuss the top web development frameworks so that you can get quality work in less time and with

How to Sign up for Coursera Courses for Free: Coursera’s user interface is intentionally designed to push learners
towards Coursera’s paid offerings. It often confuses new learners regarding what content is actually free on the
platform, and how to go about signing up for it. Since I’ve answered this question hundreds of times before, I decided
to write an article clarifying this. I will also try to answer some basic questions about Coursera, and update this article
regularly as Coursera changes its policies and UI. If you plan to recommend Coursera to someone, maybe you can
point them to this article as well. https://goo.gl/5VymbW
How to join the digital currency industry: One of the questions that I get asked most often is how to get a start in
the blockchain industry. It’s a fun and exciting space to be in. After spending 3 years with Coinbase here are my

An overview of every Data Visualization course on the internet: For this guide, I spent 10+ hours trying to
identify every online data visualization course offered as of March 2017, extracting key bits of information from their
syllabi and reviews, and compiling their ratings. For this task, I turned to none other than the open source Class
Central community and its database of thousands of course ratings and reviews. https://goo.gl/xrQemj
The best Data Science courses on the internet, ranked by your reviews: Here’s a summary of all my previous
guides, plus recommendations for 13 other data science topics. For each of the five major guides in this series, I
spent several hours trying to identify every online course for the subject in question, extracting key bits of
information from their syllabi and reviews, and compiling their ratings. My goal was to identify the three best
courses available for each subject and present them to you. The 13 supplemental topics — like databases, big data,
and general software engineering — didn’t have enough courses to justify full guides. But over the past eight months,
I kept track of them as I came across them. I also scoured the internet for courses I may have missed. For these
tasks, I turned to none other than the open source Class Central community, and its database of thousands of course
ratings and reviews. https://goo.gl/YtssLA

Top 5 Open Source Search Engines: Many know what a search engine is, what it does and even how it functions
using keywords. But to dwell in deeper into the mechanics of familiar search engines that we are fond of such as
Google and Yahoo, it is pretty useful to understand more about information retrieval through an open source search
engine. https://goo.gl/xsS5Cg
For Developers, Ego is the Enemy: When you hear the word enemy, you probably think about regular expressions,
bugs, deployments, meetings, and deadlines. Actually, in our quest to reach our goals and become the software
developers we want to be, we are usually our own worst enemies. Ego is what prevents us from asking for help,
learning, collaborating and working hard. Here with ego we are referring to the unhealthy belief in our own
importance: our arrogance and our self-centered ambition. That petulant child in every person who chooses to win
all the time and at the expense of others. https://goo.gl/pEMGAz
9 Legit Master’s Degrees You Can Now Earn Completely Online: If you’ve been thinking of going back to

going straight to some of the best universities on the planet. These online master’s degrees can be much less
expensive than in-person masters, and offer considerable flexibility — you don’t have to report to a campus, and you

interview, and the interviewer looks across the table and says, “do you have any questions?”, and you just stare back

view of the interview experience. As a candidate, you are understandably focused on one outcome: getting the job

company as they are focused on interviewing you. https://goo.gl/1pG1h2

Survey & Decision on the continuance of the "Quarterly Print Edition of IEEE MAS LINK Newsletter"
Based on the responses on above survey and the deliberations held at the IEEE Madras Section execom held on 17th
Jun 2017, it was decided to discontinue the quarterly print edition of the IEEE MAS LINK from the 2nd

2500 copies being circulated to individual professional members apart from the copies sent to engineering colleges
incurring significant cost, time & effort, it was decided to discontinue the print edition. However, the detailed
electronic newsletter coming out every month will continue.
