However, fresh autumn air is doing something magical with me as well.
These days I feel like I felt during my first study week when everything
seemed so striking and attractive, when I got up at six in the morning,
burning with the desire to go to classes and communicate with people. It is
perfectly alright to feel this way and I hope to save the unspeakable joy for
at least this period. I am interested in what new students feel about studies
and their new university? Hope they are doing great and enjoy studying in
Finland at the fullest. Insider followed the newcomers at the Freshmen party
2013 and the report on how the party went can be read on pages 6 and 7.
I hope new students will not miss all those great opportunities that our
university and Finland can provide to them. There are plenty of events and
activities taking place in Kouvola and Kotka and some of them Insider tries
to cover on the info page. If you´re interested in comic books, check page
8 of today’s issue where some advice is presented for all who wish to make
their own ones.
In regards to the joy of communication with people, I need to tell Insider
staff had a lot of fun taking new pictures for the staff page. There were plenty
of names in the previous issue and now
it is possible to meet the new editorial
board face to face. Personally, I like our
new look a lot!
Moving to Finland, first school days, new friends – for
me this all started two years ago. It is very difficult to believe
that I am on my third year and very soon I will leave Kyamk
for working life and other achievements. Time is running so
fast and I can say it is a little bit scary. All my closest friends
applied for exchange and now are studying abroad. For ex-
ample, our ex-staff Polina Racheeva who is currently a stu-
dent of Hague University of Applied Sciences in the Neth-
erlands. It is possible to read her exchange view and of other
past staff members page which will come out at some point.

On Saturday, 15th of September, IB stu-dents, a few teachers and their spouses, a couple of rotary exchange students and two design students met at the bus station at the center of Kouvola and started on their way to The national park Repovesi. Exchange students and a few other design and international business students were an hour behind also on their way to Repovesi.
The trip started with a short announcement by Ari Lindeman, Team Leader/ Leadership and Entrepreneurship at Kyamk. He informed the students that the trip, though initially meant to be paid for by the students, has been sponsored by the school (thanks to Minna Soderqvist) and the Kouvolan Latu and they have also provided the students with free food( sausages and bread). The trip was also organised by Kouvolan Latu which Ari Lindeman is the chairman off. With a lot of excitement and great weather, the bus pulled into the Repovesi parking lot and the students were asked whether they want to take a short:3km or the longer:6km route. All of them wanted the longer one and they set on. The wonderful nature and peace of Finland got everyone refreshed and happy. Interesting sights and the beautiful smell of the lake water, which they were circling around through the entire path, brought the students a welcome change from the busy school life. First thing people got excited about was a tall bridge over a ravine which was meant to be passed over with 10m apart from each other. Extremely wobbly it caused some screams, laughter and most of all- excitement. It had something of a “jungle bridge” feel and looked as a movie set. The long way was accompanied with chatter, laughter and a lot of picture taking. Some complaints were made about being tired, but young feet kept on going. Just before the campsite was reached ,where some rest was due and food provided,
there was a very high, difficult and long staircase which made everyone pant and had to take a rest. The campsite, which was reached about 10min after the staircase break, was lovely. Kouvolan Latu has prepared a fire for the students and staff and sausages were place on it. In a few minutes everyone was hap-pily eating, enjoying the water, the sun and the fresh oxygen filled Finnish air. The most interesting and fun part for most people was probably the pul-
ley bridge where small groups had to drag themselves over water on a make-shift raft-boat. After that, a few minute walk and everyone was back on the bus. The trip officially ended at 14h, when the bus pulled of the parking lot of Repovesi and started for Kouvola´s city centre.
Everyone seemed very happy with the entire trip. Some complaints were made about being tired, or hot, but that is nothing of ordinary. Some had wished there were more activi-
ties on the way and that they would have liked to stayed longer at the campsite. Maybe next time, these wishes will be granted and everyone´s desires will be satisfied.

FRESH
MEN PARTY
It has been one week since the beginning of the academic year 2013-2014. And now it is time for us to participate in the biggest, funniest, craziest and wildest Freshmen Party. The 11th of September was a brightly nice autumn day when most of the first year stu-dents gathered in the Central Park for the outdoor activities well-organized by tutors and Kupla. Everyone was in fancy costumes, dressed up in many creative ways in harmo-ny with the theme “Superheroes vs Super-villains”.
The tutors split into 13 checkpoints around
the Kouvola city centre, preparing secret chal-lenges for the new students. Freshmen groups went through every check point and enjoyed
the funny, tricky and awesome activities including: building the blocks with
blind folded eyes, making up fun-ny stories based on the words
given, crossing the road with beer boxes or getting through a spider net, do-ing tricky quizzes...etc. All teams showed their extraordinary skills by showing their great team spirits.
The students’ appearance re-ally coloured and warmed up
the whole city centre in a fasci-nating way. We seemed to get lost in
a Halloween town where we could face up with Superman, Batman, Cat woman, Pikachu and many other characters from famous movies crossing the streets. All outdoor activi-ties lasted until 10 pm, when everyone painted the town red in the hottest place of the night – Encore.
No longer to be com-petitors, Superman, Batman, Avatar guy or even Thor showed their moves energeti-cally. Yes, we did re-ally have fun! Encore was filled with fresh-ness and good mu-sic. Although school
Traditionally, Kyamk has a Freshmen party every year, starting with the tour/quest and ending with a themed after party. This year the theme was superhero´s vs. surveillants. The Freshmen tour was arranged by Tutors and Huvitoimikunta Kupla arranged the after part at Encore.

had started already, the party was really the beginning of something else. Freshmen got closer through circle-dancing, the circle kept adding up people song by song. Old students dropped by, heated up the atmosphere with their friendliness and craziness. The circle of
acquaintances was being expanded when everybody got to know each other and became closer. People danced, sang and forgot the worries of daily routines. This party was re-ally the place to be in, when old stu-dents could refresh themselves and freshmen began to adapt to a new en-vironment.
The atmosphere was getting more exciting when they announced the winner of the day. Two cabins on a cruise to Estonia belonged to team “Kopla”. Congratulations!
The party lasted until 4 am, some students
wanted to be freshmen forever, they came home with a little of regret. Some groups left the party earlier since the les-sons contin-ued the next day. How-ever, always remember to keep the bal-ance between having fun and studying, that’s how you get the most out of student life.
Every party has an end but don’t worry, a lot more interesting events are waiting for you to explore. For sure, Kouvola is not a ghost town and Kyamk is your best destination!
We talked to Noora Saarinen from team “Kopla” about their team and victory:
Is this the first time you have partici-pated in Freshmen party? Yes. It was the first freshmen party for me. How do you feel about the out-door games? I was happy with how the whole games were arranged and had a great time as the “judges” were humorous. I really liked the obstacle mis-sion at the park, where you had to save one of the team members. Which costumes do you like best? Best costumes I remember; Pippi Longstock-ing from Hell (how great was that), Thor (even though it was Marvel Thor) and got to say, our Superpear was great. We couldn’t have won without her.
Why did your team choose the name “Kopla”? The team name came from Karhukopla, in English, the Beagle boys. Because three of us were dressed as them, but rest of us (me the burglar, the poisonous Superpear and our victim) weren’t. That’s why it turned out just as Kopla. It meant a team or a gang with a bad vibe to it. We were villains with a victim.

HowTo:Draw Your Own Comic!
SUPER SHORT QUIDE TO CHARACTER DRAWINGEver wanted to draw comics but never quite knew how? Interested in keeping a comic blog? Don’t feel like much of an artist? Drawing comics doesn’t necessary require much of an artist skills. Just a good idea and a pleasant character will take you far. Here are some important things to get you started:
2. Simplify! Don’t get overly attached to anatomy or details if it isn’t crucial to the story. Simple picture is easy to read and works better on short stories.
3. Facial expression! An important and easy way to express emotions with-out words. If you have hard time with these, use a mirror to study your own features, make faces and sketch what you see.
Don't underestimate the use of a simple line. Compare these two faces, see how the expression changes with eyebrows? By adding or leaving out some lines the impression is completely different.
In the end it's all up to you, you decide whether you want to make simple pictures or are you more into details. Remember, there are as many styles as there are makers, by mixing and matching you'll find your own. Read comics with a style that you like, search internet for comic blogs and from the library you can find more extensive guides to comic making.
1. The main thing about the character is the appearance. There’s a variety of eyes, noses, mouths, faces and hairstyles to choose from. Make it look your own.

WHY FINLAND?From the far away, warm country Brenda came for love. She met her husband at an art symposium in Mexico, where she was called in as a last minute English translator. He already lived and worked in Finland then and asked her to come for the summer. Secretly, her now husband, a teacher at our school, suggested her for a job opening at Kyamk, and, through a Skype interview with Janne, she landed the job and joined the staff in 2012. ABOUT HER CAREER AND EXPERIENCEBrenda has a Masters degree in Visual Arts and a Bachelors degree in Social Communication. You might wonder what that is. The internet provides me with this answer: Social Communication is the way ideas and information are shared between two or more individuals; it is a field of study that primarily explores the ways information can be perceived, transmitted and understood, and the impact those ways have on the society. Brenda says it´s about anthropology, psychology, sociology and journalism all put together to observe human progress and be-haviour. She says it used to be the “mockery” of social studies, but it has increased in its importance and respect as the media and the modern world affects us more and more. As an intern Brenda worked on a documentary about women gangs in Mexico called “Que suene la calle” which you can find on Imdb or Youtube and check it online. INTERESTS AND FREE TIMETo the questions about her free time and interests Brenda smiles and says “People tend to confuse my curios-ity with intelligence.” She says she is a very curious person and has never considered herself to be smart. She enjoys trying new things from sports, to electronic and in her free time does very many different things. At one point she even tried Roller Derby which she liked very much and she still owns the gear and puts it on occasion-ally and skates around. She was drawn to Roller Derby because she loves skating, ever since she was a little girl. Unfortunately, she had to give it up eventually, saying she had the stamina for it, but not the speed and definitely not the time required to put into it. She likes to do different exciting and exhilarating things to force herself to learn how to deal with the uncomfortable things in life. “Don´t let fear stop you from living” she says. She loves and excels in photography. Ever since she got her first camera at the age of 5, she has been an avid photogra-pher. “Camera gives you the authority to come and talk to people” she says. She even won a Young Women’s Choice Award in San Francisco based on her photography work and a letter she wrote to the museum. You can find it online: “A bra does not make the woman” by Brenda Jiménez. RIGHT NOW AND THE FUTURE“I am currently expanding the idea of image” she says. Brenda contacted people from her childhood and asked
them to film or record their first impression of her. Then, with and EEG on her head, she will listen and look at these memories and record the brain waves that happen. She will turn them into photographs as well as try to get the sound that those brain waves make. She quotes “We´ll make beautiful music together.”She intends to stay in Finland as she and her husband love the life and culture of Finland. She says it has the best educational system in the world and she would like to stay at Kyamk and would like to expand her curriculum, teaching courses in art and art theory someday. If you want to see Brenda´s work, visit Mikkeli´s Studio Wäkewä art gal-lery between the 17th of September and 1st of October for her first exhibition in Finland.
I chose to talk to Brenda this week be-cause I like her teaching and attitude and
wanted to learn more about one of the most liked teachers in our school. I also
decided to go with a slightly different ap-proach to this project.
WHO IS BRENDA?To the question who are you Brenda looked at me, smiled and said “I´ve been trying to answer that question through art for years, it´s funny you should ask that first.” Brenda Jimenez Rodriguez, a teacher, an artist, comes from Tijuana, Mexico. She quotes Crusty the Clown “The happiest place on Earth!”

RUSHDirector: Ron HowardStarring: Chris Hemsworth, Daniel Brühl, Olivia WildeGenre: Action, Biography, Drama
Based on a true story.
It is the story about two aspiring Formula 1 drivers during the 1970s James Hunt and Niki Lauda por-trayed by Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Brühl. The au-dience follows them as they progress to make their names as drivers from their first meeting in 1970 at a Formula 3 race to the final parting of their ways.
The movie is focused on the main characters mutual passion for car races and is a vital point in developing their storylines.
These two characters that have so much in common in their upbringing and career plans are yet so differ-ent in their approach in life and the lifestyle they have chosen.
On the one hand you have a character that builds his dream on his knowledge about cars and his love of improving their make-up. And the other has a love for the sport, for life and living it to the fullest rather than spending his time calculating for risks. Their decisions affect not only their own lives but the lives of the peo-ple they love and care about. The certain disdain these two rivals hold for one another turns them out to be more like equals respecting each other than enemies.
The historic accuracy of the movie may be debat-able but the movie makes it for a fun evening’s en-tertainment. The director Howard Ron visualises perfectly a whole era with bad hairstyles, lots of smoking, too much eye shadow and succeeds in cre-ating an overall warm retro appeal to it. Hans Zim-mer completes it with a phenomenal soundtrack.
Pointer for international student: The movie is multi-lingual, mostly English & German (50/50) with tiny bits of Italian as well, so unless you’re not fluent in Finnish/Swedish (subtitles) or in the mentioned languages you may have difficulties.
