Jesus confronts the Rich Young Ruler
Matthew 19:16–26
Believers are called to count the cost of eternal life and follow Christ.
“Fairest Lord Jesus”
Why did the rich young ruler go away sad?
By asking Christ to reveal anything in his heart that he is unwilling to give up for Him.
As a family, read selected portions of Matthew 19:16–26.

The God Who Loves by John MacarThur
This classic title examines the truth that neither God’s love nor His wrath can be understood in isolation from each other, and addresses questions such as…· If God is love, how could He send anyone to hell?· What’s the difference between the loving God of the New Testament and the angry God of the Old Testament?· Does God love the whole world?· How can God be both jealous and loving?

Robertson McQuilkin was a college and seminary professor and the third president of colombia international university from 1968–1990. he met his wife, Muriel, as a student at colombia Bible college. he proposed to her on Valentine’s
Day 1948, and they married in August of the same year. For 30 years they raised six children and served god together in many different ways.
in 1978 something began to change. Muriel loved to tell stories, and she started repeating the same story, literally minutes after telling it the first time. this problem occured with increasing frequency, and she began to lose her train of thought.
in 1981 doctors told Robertson that Muriel appeared to be entering the beginning stages of Alzheimer’s Disease. From that point on she progressively got worse. she found it more and more difficult to express herself. Robertson struggled as he watched his wife and loving partner slowly fade away.
one thing Muriel was able to communicate was that she loved and needed him. As the disease progressed, she became anxious about being at home without Robertson. she began to walk the half-mile to his office several times a day, sometime to the point that her feet would bleed.
By 1990 Robertson McQuilkin knew he had to decide whether he should continue to pursue his career at the school or serve his wife at home. in

the end it was really no contest. While the choice to step down from his position at colombia Bible college may not have been easy, it was simple. During his resignation address at the college, he explained that it was an honor to serve his wife because he loved her.
so Robertson became a full-time homemaker and caregiver. He had a great opportunity to experience God’s strength and grace getting him through each day, and he learned much about love. When people asked him if he ever tired of caring for Muriel, he would say, “no, i love to care for her. she’s my precious wife.”
on Valentine’s Day in 1995 Robertson was riding an exercise bike at the foot of Muriel’s bed. she woke up, smiled, and suddenly spoke—for the first time in months—to say she loved him. he rushed over to the bed, gave his wife a hug, and asked her, “honey, you really do love me, don’t you?” she responded with, “i’m nice,” which was her way of saying, “Yes.” those were the last words Muriel ever said aloud.
Robertson McQuilkin continued to serve his wife until the end of her life in 2003. he made it clear through those difficult years that he would always be committed to his wife and would honor their vows—“In sickness and health, ’til death do us part.”
the Bible speaks much about caring for those who are weak or disabled, a group that clearly includes those afflicted with Alzheimer’s Disease
or dementia. here in our own church family we have many who honor the Lord by faithfully caring for someone who is suffering this way. And while there can be great blessing in this service, as the McQuilkins’ story illustrates, there are also significant physical, mental, and financial burdens.
in response, for the past three years our church has had a ministry support group for those caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s or dementia. Our desire is to come alongside these faithful servants—to care for the caregivers. During the meeting, care is provided for loved ones with dementia. they enjoy a light breakfast, worship music, scripture reading, and a walk or stroll around the campus.
We are always in need of volunteers who can help us in this vital ministry. there are many ways to serve, including….
• Attending the saturday meetings to learn what the needs are• Bringing food, praying, or participating with the loved ones during the meeting• Assisting caregivers in a multitude of ways• Providing transportation• giving respite care for a few hours a week (this gives families a break, allowing them to attend church, and opens time for errands and other chores.)
this is a great opportunity to minister to these precious families. i encourage you to come serve and honor the Lord by caring for our caregivers.
