Our 3 trainings in the first quarter of 2015 will focus on
Building Your Web Presence If you are self-employed or even have a hobby business, come learn how to set up your own professional website easi-
ly, quickly and very inexpensively. You can attend one session or all to work on your website!
JAN 28 ◆ FEB 25 ◆ MAR 25
Training sessions are on Wednesdays from 12—1pm. We’ll meet at a different location/ restaurant each class where lunch can be purchased at a nominal cost, and where wi-fi is available to get online.
Sessions will be interactive workshops where we will actually set up your website, so bring your laptop or tablet if pos-sible. The only cost involved will be obtaining your domain name (typically about $15 per year), and this can be done
before, during or after the class at anytime—its not necessary for this class.
Our goal is to support every single business entity in the New Lisbon area in creating a web presence, whether it’s a dedicated website or social media page. In this technological age, your local customers and neighbors may know how to find you, but your new or more distant potential customers will seek your services online… don’t miss out on them!
While there is no charge, pre-registration is required to ensure enough materials will be available.

Brian & Hollie Slater, Owners & Directors of Mill Haven Foods and benefactors who created the new Rocket Rec Youth Center, have been keeping busy! They’ve recently purchased and repur-posed the old Grocery Depot building into a beautiful new health & fitness center.
The health club has a large, fresh and comfortable workout space, outfitted with a variety of cardiovascular equipment as well as free weights and other tools. Membership is $20—$25 per month which includes an initial consultation with a Personal Trainer to clarify your health goals and get you started on a program.
Yoga and Zumba classes are offered weekly for a drop-in rate of only $5 per class. This separate training room also serves as a wrestling practice area, and sees the UW-Madison Wrestling Coach on a regular basis for clinics with our Rocket Wrestlers!
Healthy & tasty prepared foods are available at the bistro; organic & fair-trade coffees are
served at the coffee bar; organic & hormone-free meats, produce and packaged foods are
for sale in the mini-mart; and nutritious beverages & protein shakes can be purchased ready-to-drink or in powdered form.
A lovely collection of hand-selected pieces are sold in the gift shop. Everything from artwork on the walls to candles to kids toys to vintage dresses. There’s something for everyone!
The floral cooler is filled with fresh cut flowers and bouquets—you can’t miss the smell of lilies as you stroll by…

Store, and the New Lisbon Food Pantry. Silver Star Health is open 7 days a week, early until
late. Stop in or call (608) 562-3741.

What’s so
About a BIG GIG?
At a recent press event, CEO & General Manager of Lynxx/ Lemonweir Valley Telcom, Jim Costello, an-nounced they have completed laying fiber optic cable throughout the Lemonweir Valley area which is capa-ble of delivering gigabit broadband service to its customers. This is a tremendous accomplishment, consider-ing we’re only the third region in the state to offer this light speed—literally the fastest available anywhere on the planet. Many of our metropolitan neigh-bors have yet to meet this speed, and thus it catapults our region onto the international stage with the likes of Google! Costello shares, “The greatest thing about gi-gabit broadband is the experience it provides. With symmetrical down- load/upload mbps and unlimited data usage, Lynxx delivers flawless internet experience any- time. Whether you are gaming, video conferenc- ing, or enjoying your fa-vorite high definition over the top content like Netflix, your expectations will be exceeded.”
While a gigabit is currently far more than individual users could possibly need—considering the entire New Lisbon School District uses less than half a gigabit—that won’t be the case for long. Technology is progress-ing so quickly that within 5 years most households will have dozens of smart devices operating simultaneous-ly, and the price of gigabit service will come down just as every other aging technology does. In the mean-while, it certainly makes the New Lisbon, Camp Douglas, and Lemonweir Valley area attractive for new indus-try to move in and for tourists to extend their vacation time here.
1 Giga Bit = 1 Million Bits = 1 Thousand Mega Bits

SUPER-THOUGHTS By New Lisbon Schools Superintendent Dennis Birr ...
The big excitement lately in the Junior High has the beginning of a one-on-one Chrome-
book initiative. Every Junior High student is getting a Chrome-book that they will have with them all day at school. The Chromebooks will stay at school, but this is a game changer for us and our students. Our students will be able to take ad-vantage of having information at their fingertips. Chromebooks also create a very collaborative learning environment between students and with teachers. The elementary staff has been able to participate in a Profes-sional Learning Community grant. It was rolled out to the entire elementary staff during a Friday inservice day. The PLC grant is part of a process that can be a game changer for our elementary and therefore our entire school. The processes that get devel-oped collaboratively will help us become more efficient in what we do and what we do will be more effective, which will benefit all of our students. We had a large group of grandparents eating lunch with their grandchildren on Grandparent Days, a very excited group. Linda Pudenz and Debby Hansen took a group of Junior High students to a leadership workshop in Bangor. Seventeen high school students also attended a leadership seminar at Cashton this past Thursday. An upgrade in the lighting and sound for the stage and gymnasi-um was completed recently, to be ready for the production of Tarzan. A group of 15 young men represented New Lisbon in the Youth in Harmony Barbershop Clinic in Rochester and a group of 5th graders participated in a Talent Show at Hillsboro. A number of High Sschool students had the opportunity to meet with an area health education coordinator to learn about health careers. The GIVE students had a successful "Night Without a Home" with better weather than they have experienced in most years. FBLA held their inaugural induction ceremony. The elementary students enjoyed another Melikin Puppet show. A few classes that I visited this month included Deb Buchholz's Business Computer Applications class creating tables, letter-heads and using dropcaps. Ben Morey's 7th grade Industrial Arts class starting to use power tools as they starting making Rocket Cribbage boards. Valerie Johnson's 2nd grade were writing stories about their trip to Volk Field and the Corn Maze. Seal-a-Smile was caring for our elementary students. I also got to help a few students during their math time in Leah Faber's and Corina Haschke's classes and play vocabulary review Bingo in Debby Hansen's 7th grade social studies. I saw a lot of acronyms in Janie Bever's Junior High Language Arts class, where they were writing meaningful sentences with them. It reminded me of SLO, PPG and PDP. We have too many acro-nyms in education? I also got to see the Google Classroom in operation in Jim Giebel's English classroom.

FREE & DISCOUNTED HEALTH SCREENINGS
At Mile Bluff – New Lisbon Family Medical Center
Thursday, January 15, 2015
In order to lead a healthy lifestyle, it’s important to take con-trol of your health. Knowing your specific risks for developing heart disease, diabetes and hearing loss can help you be pro-active in making healthier life choices. Knowing your levels of cholesterol and blood pressure, and keeping those under con-trol, may even help to add a few more years to your life.
If you would like to learn some steps you can take to better control your wellness, be sure to attend the upcoming health fair at Mile Bluff - New Lisbon Family Medical Center. The event will be held on Thursday, January 15 from 7 to 10 am.
Free blood pressure and blood sugar screenings will be availa-ble, along with the opportunity to discuss specific risks for de-veloping diabetes and heart disease with Mile Bluff’s healthcare professionals. You will also have the opportunity to enjoy refreshments and win door prizes.
If you would like to have a total cholesterol test performed with no fasting required, you may do so for $10. You also have the option to have a lipid profile worked up for only $20; this test requires 12 hours of fasting.
In addition to these services, a member from Mile Bluff’s audi-ology team will be available from 8 to 11 am to perform free hearing tests. They will be able to tell you of any specific risks you may have for developing hearing loss.
Once your tests are completed, Mile Bluff’s healthcare profes-sionals will review your results with you, and will provide tips on how to reduce your risks for developing diabetes, heart disease and hearing loss. If areas of concern are found through these screenings, resources will be provided to help you with your needs, and all results will be sent to your primary care provider.
Insurance is not needed to take advantage of the benefits these health screenings have to offer. The information you receive from these tests, along with the educational tools you will be given, are important steps in positively impacting your health. Appointments are required for all services, so call 608-562-3111 to reserve your spot today!

Local employers such as Walker Stainless Inc. and WM Sprinkman Corp. are thrilled with this news, and may be able to fill welder positions they’ve had vacant for months or even years. Together these two employers need more than a dozen welders, and this labor shortage has caused them (and other employers) to pass on business opportunities or incur higher production costs as a result of paying out overtime wages for welders.
Western Technical College (WTC) is offering this program in partnership with the Mauston School District, under the guidance of the Juneau County Economic Development Corporation (JCEDC) and with support from Wisconsin’s Depart- ment of Workforce Development (DWD). The Mauston High School shop has been retrofitted with welding stations and the 12 week program will provide industry recognized welding certificates for all qualified graduates. The specific types of welding taught will meet the needs of our local em- ployers so graduates can find good local jobs readily, or they can build on these college credits and continue their studies toward a degree. Three separate classes of up to 15 participants each can run consecutively. And perhaps best of all, this program has received grant funding to subsi- dize tuition costs. Throughout 2015 all students who enroll in the program will do so at a significantly reduced tuition rate, regardless of financial need.
For information on this program, enrollment, or becoming a course instructor, please contact WTC directly.

New Lisbon Chamber News Vol 2015-Q1 Page 16
According to the Bureau of Transportation, long distance travel (to and from distance of over 50 miles total) increases by 23 percent of the average rate during the holiday season. If your family is among the millions of Americans taking a road trip during the holidays, you’ll need to be prepared for increased traffic and possibly winter weather road condi-tions – especially if you are staying here in the Midwest.
1. Get a tune-up If you haven’t had your car in for its regular maintenance in a few months, make sure it’s ready to go for your trip – and winter in general. Having your car break down during the winter is something no driver wants to experience, so you’ll want to make sure your car is in tip-top shape before hitting the road. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administra-tion (NHTSA) recommends having your tires, battery, fluids, and defrost mode checked by a qualified mechanic before any particularly long distance winter road trips.
2. Create an emergency safety kit Though you might have some jumper cables and some tools for the spare tire in your trunk, you could end up needing a lot more if you get stranded on the side of the road this win-ter. Apart from jumper cables, make sure you have water, a small supply of food (protein bars are great!), blankets, a flashlight, road flares, first aid kit and a small snow shovel. Call 911 in case of an emergency, but a kit like this should get you through most small problems.
3. Clear the backseat If you’re traveling with children, you’ll want to make sure the backseats are clear of any dangerous items or choking hazards before they’re spending hours of time back there. In addition, if you’re using a car or booster seat, make sure it’s installed properly as 73 percent are not. Make sure the kids have something to keep them occupied and leave you undistracted to focus on the road.
4. Get a good night’s sleep Before you hit the road for your long trip, make sure you’ve hit the hay long enough, too. The NHTSA estimates that roughly 100,000 crashes per year are the result of drowsi-ness and driver fatigue, resulting in more than 71,000 inju-ries and 1,550 deaths. Don’t put your family at risk from drowsy driving; make sure you’re well rested and energized before taking the wheel.
5. Review your directions before leaving To help make sure you’re as focused as possible when you’re on the road, make sure you’ve reviewed your directions be-fore you leave. Don’t just rely on a GPS to get you to your destination – review your route beforehand for any tricky changes or construction zones that could slow you down. This way, if you come up on a detour you won’t be stressed or frustrated, and can focus 100 percent on the road.
6. Pack heavy items on bottom/secure loose items When driving at any amount of speed (let’s say 50 mph), any sudden braking and stopping can cause the objects in your car to become 50 mph projectiles. To make sure that this can’t happen in your vehicle, make sure your large, heavy items are packed on the bottom of the pile with smaller lug-gage and other items firmly secured.
7. Don’t use your cell phone! As you should know by now, using your cell phone while driving can be one of the most dangerous things you can do. In fact, talking on a cell phone has been shown to make driv-ers four times more likely to get in a car accident, with tex-ting while driving making drivers 23 times more likely to crash! Rather than putting your own and your passengers’ lives at risk, designate the front passenger to be your co-pilot, and have them handle all of your cell phone duties. This way you can stay focused on driving, and respond to your calls and texts at a safe time.
8. Make frequent stops/split driving duties In addition to making sure you’re well rested before hitting the road, make the trip easier on yourself by splitting it into manageable chunks with frequent rest, gas and food breaks. Drivers can easily get fatigued when driving for long periods of time, so these breaks will help keep you energized and fresh. If possible, split driving duties with other passengers to help disperse the responsibility.
9. Eyes on the skies Whenever you’re driving, make sure you’re keeping an eye on the skies so that you’re aware of any inclement weather that you might be approaching. If necessary, have your co-pilot figure out a route that will avoid the bad weather, but be prepared to slow down or pull off altogether. There are some snowstorms that are best waited out, so tune in to weather radio, keep watching the skies, and drive carefully.
