L&T Supplies Scania Tippers to BGR Mining

BGR Mining & Infra Pvt. Ltd. (formerly BGR Mining & Company) is headquartered in Hyderabad. Over the past 20 years, BGR has successfully extracted OB and Coal of several millions of cubic meters. With 3000-strong manpower, BGR aims to embark on new avenues of excavation and extraction of major minerals like iron ore, bauxite and to expand services to clientele across the steel, aluminum, sponge, iron and cement industries. The company has maintained impressive standards of quality and its consistent performance has made it a leader in the Indian mining industry.

In the year 2000, BGR successfully moved to higher-capacity tipper trucks

Braving the blazing heat and dry winds, local workmen gathered at Khairagura coal site in Belampalli town of Telangana area to witness the arrival of a new and gleaming range of P410 Tipper Trucks amidst jubilation. These 25 nos. Scania trucks were formally handed over by L&T to BGR Mining & Infra Pvt. Ltd. for deployment in Khairagura OCP of Singareni Collieries Co.Ltd. This consignment is the first batch of the major order secured by L&T from BGR for supply of 150 nos. of 18.8 CuM Tipper Trucks. The trucks are assembled and delivered from Scania’s newest state-of-the-art facility in Narsapura-Karnataka.

Today, BGR is one of the frontline firms engaged in overburden removal contracts in coal sector in the country. The firm is already operating in SCCL’s Ramakrishnapuram and Srirampuram Opencast Projects, besides Khairagura in Andhra Pradesh. BGR is also handling projects for Coal India Limited in Northern Coalfields Ltd and Central Coalfields Ltd. Their successful execution and expanding operations have seen BGR own and operate one of the largest equipment fleet in India.

for operating in the opencast mines. This latest order for Scania trucks is a breakthrough for L&T and marks the beginning of a new relationship between the two companies. BGR was one of the earliest companies in the private sector to foray into mega-mining by acquiring mammoth machines like Komatsu PC2000 excavator that held sway in the market. BGR’s operational fleet today includes Komatsu D65/D85/D155 Dozers and GD705 Motor Grader.

PC210-8 is a complete machine – Mr.Elred Kumar

Customer Notes

Mr. Elred Kumar is one of thedynamic entrepreneurs of the blue metal industry in Tamilnadu – who has intricate knowledge and holds strong views of the industry. He advocates rapid modernization of the blue metal quarry to achieve higher growth and to accelerate the pace of infrastructure revolution.

Mr. Elred Kumar hails from the beautiful fishing town of Rameswaram and is a post-graduate in engineering from Anna University. Even as a student, he dabbled in various vocations as he was keen to try out new ideas. He started his career with software development. Sometime later, he exited the profession to join the infrastructure bandwagon by launching his own company.

“My vision was to get into the complete infra activity – quarry, crushing, hot mix plants, road development, ready mix plants and housing. I began with the most basic of all this – blue metal quarry and gradually got into all of them,” says Mr. Kumar excitedly. He has developed each of this biz into independent units. Providing inputs and effective guidance to take the activity forward is what he does. Many of his staff has been with him for over 10 years.

“Initially, when we started the quarry activity – we encountered huge labour and manual practices. Their safety in the mines was uppermost in my mind. I decided to mechanize the operations and thus began my tryst with L&T-Komatsu PC200 machines. Besides replacing the labour and adopting the modern methods of excavation, I realized that PC200 was a safe bet. It could deliver superb performance and give amazing results,” says Mr. Elred Kumar.

Another outlook was the scalability of operations. Mr. Elred Kumar says from a mere 2-acre operation he

could expand the quarry activity to 100 acres of production, thanks to the new-found confidence! The mechanization also enabled him to professionally develop the quarry with mining benches and haul roads.

“Komatsu technology is highly suitable for the blue metal quarry, especially in Chennai area, where we encounter hard rocks. PC200 machines were strong and robust and have the power to go on even after 10,000 hrs of operation. Their resale value is good as well,” he remarks. Mr. Elred Kumar was so much awestruck by the machine that he went on to purchase 2-3 machines each month. He eventually

2 L&T Earthmover News – April 2014

became the single largest fleet-owner of L&T-Komatsu PC200 machines in the country with 75 nos.

He continues, “But after the manufacturing of PC200 was stopped, our technical team took time off to study all brands of machines in the 20-ton market for one year including PC210LC-8, and found that PC210-8,introduced by L&T after PC200’s withdrawal, was the right machine for tough application like blue metal quarry.

Given its high power and best-in-class efficiency, PC210 is certainly a value addition over PC200. It is a gen-next machine with Komtrax – which makes it an instant hit. In terms of stronger undercarriage, long life of components, lesser fuel consumption, low maintenance and consistent performance, I am sure PC210-8 outbeats all its peers in the market.

Komtrax is a highly futuristic tool with a bundle of user-friendly features that enhance the quality of life of the machine and equip the owner with the best possible means to track and monitor the machine. It also has many inbuilt safety features.

I reiterate that Komatsu PC210-8 is the most suitable for the blue metal quarry today and I am proud to recommend this machine to my associates in the industry,” he says. Mr. Elred Kumar has endorsed the Komatsu model by placing an order with L&T for 30 nos. PC210-8 machines recently. These shall take care of his expansion plans in Tamilnadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka -he has as of now – 10 quarries in Chennai, 2 in AP and 4 around Bangalore.

Now, for over 12 years, he has been actively involved in shaping the blue metal industry in the State. Mr. Elred Kumar’s opinion is highly valued in the industry. Aspiring entrepreneurs often approach him for ideas and guidance. He says the future shall force the smaller quarries to upgrade to the next level of mechanization for growth. New statutory regulations rolled out by Government of Tamilnadu in mining sector would seem like hurdles initially, but would help the industry to stabilize in terms of technology and output.

He has high appreciation for L&T team which has been the backbone of all his operations. “The comfort levels with L&T are simply superb. The liberty to speak with any team member on the machine issues is the real advantage,” says Mr. Kumar. “Even, your Dealer Aycee Excon is highly pro-active – keen on collecting our feedback and working closely to resolve issues,” he adds.

Mr. Elred Kumar recalls with gratitude L&T’s efforts to send a Japanese team to visit his sites for advanced study on equipment performance and feedback analysis. As a follow-up, suggestions received from his team were implemented to step up product efficiency. “L&T is our trustworthy partner and we have always relied on them for technical advice and continuous evaluation”, he says.

Given his organizational skills, Mr. Elred Kumar is the most sought after man today. He is working out a plan to establish a pan-India association for quarry owners,to disseminate the technology for their benefit and to effectively represent to the Centre on various issues facing the industry. He strongly feels the need to set up operator schools to groom competent and efficient operators in the light of product technology becoming highly sophisticated.

Today, Mr. Elred Kumar is knee-deep in infra activity. He has executed state highways and tollways as well as set up crushers and ready mix plants. He also has a factory to manufacture artificial sand. He has forayed into the realty segment by launching an ambitious project to construct mass housing and gated community.

Moving to the tinsel town, Mr. Elred Kumar dabbled in film making with a curiosity to learn the tricks of the trade. He is presently consolidating all his operations under RS Group to give it a corporate identity and brand image.

The next generation is in the offing – Jeffreine, elder son, is studying B.Arch while his younger son, Fabin is in the high school. For the present, Mr. Elred Kumar is fully occupied!

L&T 9020- working efficiency is better : Mr. Narendra Goel

From developing import substitution products like bulb-bars for naval vessels to becoming leaders in TMT Bars in Central India, Goel Group is a name to reckon within Chattisgarh. Steering the fortunes of this Rs. 2300-crore group is Mr. Narendra Goel, Managing Director, Shree Bajrang Power &IspatLtd. who believes in the maxim ‘if you dare to dream- then work to achieve it’.

The Raipur-based Goel Group is one of the top ten companies in the State with diversified interests in sponge iron, steel, power generation and media. All the group companies are named after Shri Bajrang, inspired by the strength and agility of Lord Hanuman.

Many decades back, group founder Mr. HariramGoelhad moved from Alwar-Rajasthan to Nepal to establish a flourishing timber contract business. But then, the political developments there forced them to return to India. Mr. Hariram Goel moved to the under-developed Bastar where he set up a rice mill in 1979. Cement manufacturing came soon after, and the Goels worked towards establishing ‘Jai Bajrang Cement’ as a leading brand in Central India. However, owing to uncertainty in the market, the Goels had to exit the cement business later.

With the advent of the next generation, the family shifted base to Raipur and started a new innings in steel manufacturing. In 1991, Goel family established the 30,000 ton per annum modern steel rolling mill. In a decade, the business grew by leaps and bounds – expansion of steel to 2 lakh ton for TMT and steel melting shop in Raipur. In 2004, for the first time the Goels forayed into the gas-based 26 MW power plant for captive use even as they added 2 lakh ton sponge iron plant and steel melting shop. By then,Goel TMT bars had become a much sought-after brand in construction and housing segment. The following years saw them expand into ferro alloys and adding 20MW power plant.

In the financial year 2011-12, the group embarked on a major expansion drive by moving to Tilda village to set up 2MT beneficiation plant for iron ore, 1.4 MT pellet plant with Lurgi technology and 2 lakh tpa sponge iron plant alongwith 20 MW gas-based power plant. Today, the group generates close to 65 MW power for captive consumption.

As part of the emerging game plan, Goel Group has made key investments in green power by establishing hydel power projects of 45 MW in Chamba and 55 MW in Shimla. These plants, now in various phases of activity, shall be operational in 2015 and 2017 respectively.

Mr. Narendra Goel is a commerce graduate but exhibits strong affinity for engineering and is passionate about technology. He

encourages creativity in learning and has involved himself in efforts which brought him national attention and accolades. Some years back, when DRDO had difficulty in importing bulb-bar for building a submarine, Mr. Goel took up the challenge and developed the special alloy steel indigenously in his steel mill for the naval vessel. For this, Goel Group were honoured with the National Import Substitution Award by the President of India,Dr Abdul Kalam.

In an earlier instance during 1988, when the family was into cement business, Mr. Goel perfected the technology for the nascent oil-well cement, which was approved by ONGC for application in the seabed. Likewise, the Goels pioneered the development of H-beam in their steel rolling mills for use by Indian Railways. This was an import substitute and received laurels from RDSO-Ministry of Railways.

When the Goels struck work in Tilda, they were in need of excavators for handling large areas of excavation. One company that came to Mr. Narendra Goel’s mind was that of L&T because of his earlier association with L&T Switchgear. So he went ahead and purchased L&T-Komatsu PC210 and deployed it for rock and soil excavation. “PC210fits the bill perfectly. It is certainly a robust product with reliable performance,” he remarked.

Further, when the Goels wanted to acquire loaders for the material handling, Mr. Goel was quick to place order on L&T for 5 nos. of L&T 9020. “Diesel consumption is lesser, maintenance cost is less and working efficiency is better by 15 percent,” says Mr. Goel while elaborating on the performance of L&T 9020.

4 L&T Earthmover News – April 2014

Today the machines are deployed for handling iron ore, coal and limestone - loading and shifting to hoppers, truck and rack loading as well. Mr. Goel was so satisfied with the loader performance that he acquired 5 nos. more loaders to take care of his growing requirements.

The next-generation Goels are already on board. While two are engineers, 2 are management graduates and the other 2 are commerce graduates. These junior Goels are put through a rigorous 2-year comprehensive training programme before they are allotted to work in individual companies.

“Giving back to the earth is imperative for us”, says Mr. Goel who talks of the group’s ambitious efforts to reach out to society. They have set up NH Goel CBSE World School in a 100-acre residential campus, the biggest in Chattisgarh to provide top quality education. In fact, Mr. Goel recalls the progressive thinking his father had when he opened an exclusive girls school way back in 1958.

The group looks after the peripheral development of villages by taking care of drainage and water supply and opening up of school and community hall in the neighbourhood.

All the four Goel brothers work today in the group and hold individual responsibilities. The group employs close to 7000 people and provides indirect employment to 10,000 people. The group aims to reach 3000 cr in its silver jubilee year in two years from now.

Mr. Narendra Goel has strong bonding with his people and makes a point to meet up all his brothers and their families each Sunday for leisurely lunch and to spend time with their mother for extended conversation.

“It is not merely education, but knowledge that is important – that holds our future,” says Mr. Narendra Goel whose vision for growth and development has enabled the Goel Group carve out a big business in Chattisgarh. “Our efforts today are to

cut costs but not compromise on quality. We also believe in empowerment and have department heads working closely with us on this activity.” He reveals that Mr. O.P. Jindal of Jindal Group has been his role model in building a successful business with socialist thinking.

“Failures are part of the game but then it is imperative for us to learn from them to progress in life,” remarks Mr. Narendra Goel who is busy with many tasks throughout the day. “It is like 100 bulbs going up in my brain,” his face lights up. “Doing something new each day is what gives us a challenge,” he adds hastily.

Several initiatives by the Goel Group have recognized -- International Olive Crown Awards for display of environmental leadership and efforts towards environment sustainability, and United Nations Development Programme award for energy efficiency intervention in steel rolling mills.
