EDITORIAL Greetings to all Morris enthusiasts! Spring has sprung and to celebrate the arrival of warmer weather in this stunning Cape, a braai/ book sale/ Concours at the Clubhouse has been organized which I’m sure will have a full members’ attendance. Mitford, Mr Regalia, has a large collection of interesting books to offer and at very low prices, a real bargain.
The Variety Show (to raise funds for the Rally) was a huge success. Have a look at the article and photos below. Unfortunately, I couldn’t attend due to personal reasons, but I believe it was a lot of fun!
Also, there is a note on the Prince Alfred Hamlet’s Karoo Arts & Culture Show. One of our traditional events where we can exhibit our Morris and have an excuse to travel to Ceres and enjoy a day in its beautiful surroundings.
Norman Penfold’s sudden passing will leave a big void in our Morris family. We’ll miss him dearly.
As this will be the last issue of the year, I would like to thank all the contributors that make “Morris Matters” possible with their articles, photos and encouraging words: Frikkie, Gerda, Richard, Bertha, Mitford, Willie and many more.
Have a safe holiday season. Merry Christmas and a Happy 2020!!!
Enjoy the read! Articles, photos and suggestions are welcomed ([email protected] / 083 522 8881)

CHAIRMAN’S CHATTER
The passing of Norman Penfold, one of our veteran members, loved and respected by all, is a great loss for our club. No event will ever be the same without Norman. Year after year he won the prize for attending the most events in his trusty Morrie. Norman, old friend, you will be missed. Till we meet again.
Due to the rugby and the weather, there have been changes made to our events. The Killarney Classic Car Show will now take place on the 8th of December, which will change date of our End of the Year (to be announced later). The International Motor and Music Festival on the 23rd and 24th November at the Cape Town Stadium has been cancelled due to due to the low take-up of ticket and sponsorship sales.

With the 2020 Rally now getting closer, we have our work cut out for us. We will need all the help we can get from our members. Remember, the deadline for the final payment of the rally fees is the 31st of December.
I want to thank Gerda and Mariana Snyders, who organized the Morries Got Talent show, all the Committee members who helped with the preparation of the hall, Lynne Smit, who was responsible for the design of the tickets and the posters and all the members who helped to sell tickets. Thanks to Ron as well, for holding another one of his successful raffles. Thank you, Sandy and Owen, for running the finances for us. The show was a huge success and of course, the main event of the evening, the fashion show, was out of this world. A few of our models already signed contracts with agents from famous modelling schools……
Now that Gerda is back from visiting our children in the UK and Holland during October, things will from now on run on all four cylinders again.
Christmas and New Year is upon us – the Committee and I wish all our members and their families a joyful Christmas and a happy, prosperous New Year. After waiting 10 years since the previous, 2020 is upon us. Let’s make this Rally unforgettable.
Keep Morrissing.
Frikkie

NORMAN PENFOLD – IN MEMORIAM by Bertha Laubscher
It is an honour to have had Norman Penfold as my friend. The only way to describe him is a person who will not hurt a fly. Because he was an only child, he was also a lonely person and the Morris Minor Club became his family in Cape Town.
Years ago, I could not attend a Morris function and I asked him to accompany my husband to Ceres. He got hooked on the Morris and just had to have one too. Whenever there was a problem with his car then Norman was sick too! I always felt for him because I am exactly the same that way!! Paul always came to his house to fetch his car for a service and that, he appreciated that tremendously.
Norman attended all our Morris functions - one day he forgot to put his false teeth in, but he was there!!! He became our Postman and he declared himself to be
Norman The Foreman. He was definitely not a handyman, but he could tell the men to hurry up and get the job done. We just accepted his ‘reprimands’ because we understood him.
Norman was part of the Naughty Boys – our 4 ‘ou toppies’ who understand whatever there was to be understood. I think Norman felt secure in this group. They were booked together for the rally and sadly now Norman will not be there to attend our next year rally.
Norman always loved talking about his family in Bloemfontein. I can honestly say that they did their bit for him. They always invited him for Xmas and family functions. He loved being called Normy by the little one. Even the dogs were his ‘shadows’. I am sure that they will miss him too.
Alida van Eeden was his special girlfriend because she really made a fuss about him and he loved her green Chevrolet. He never asked how she was but always asked whether the Chevy is still running.
The Morris club will most definitely Not forget Norman!!
Rest in peace, my Friend!!!

RECENT EVENTS
MORRIES GOT TALENT- VARIETY SHOW, Saturday 5th October by Gerda Muller
A few years ago, at the George Car Show, as we usually do after the show, we were having a braai
and sat around the fire chatting, and I mentioned to Cristina Jones that one day, I would like to
produce a talent show using the club members as the artists. Cristina was immediately chuffed with
7
the idea and said I must go for it. It festered for a few years and when we started raising funds for
the Rally, the idea came to fruition.
I announced via email that I was talent scouting and anyone with any kind of talent
should come forward………… and was flatly ignored. I knew I could bank Alastair van
Huyssteen, our singer/songwriter/lawyer/club member to do a few numbers for us. He
even wrote a Morris Minor song for us!
I also knew that I wanted to have a fashion parade as comic relief,
using the men in the club to be the models. Surprisingly enough, they
were quite keen to help out.
Then Mariana Snyders came to my rescue. Her daughter, Melanie
Hurter is the owner/choreographer/teacher of Black Swan Bellydance
Studio and she and her team were willing to be the main act of the
show.
After that, Mariana came up with Aubrey Ellis, who for 11 years, was the leading male
singer in the famous Brickhill/Burke musical extravaganza. He was classical tenor for
the Shoestring Opera Co. (SA) and he has been a lead singer in professional theatre,
including Oliver, Evita, Annie, and also in the world premiere of the opera, Esther.
Aubrey’s son, Virgil, is a virtuoso guitar player who owns a guitar school. He played
in countries like Abu Dhabi, Dubai, England and Wales. Here in South Africa, he
played in most of our top venues. He performed with Des and Dawn Lindbergh,
playing the banjo. He was lead guitarist in the Wendy Oldfield Band, and also played
guitar in the show “Four Jacks and a Jill”. He also performed with his parents, Aubrey
and Beryl Ellis in “Night of a Thousand Stars.”
Mariana’s friend, Anna Redelinghuys, who
together with her husband Joe, through
the years, owned various pubs and bistros
in the northern suburbs, is a singer in her
own right and to this day performs with
various bands in her bistro, Annie’s Ladies
Pub and Bistro.
So, I was happy, I had my professionals.
My models, however, were quite a
different story. The theme was Diversity.
In fashion, the latest trend is not to
discriminate against any body shape, age,
disability or size. So, I had to choose wisely. Mr. Chairman, Felicity (Frikkie Muller), represented the
mature ladies, Charlene (Charl Cilliers), the haute couture anorexic model, Georgine (Roger Buckley),
the androgynous look, because of her beard and moustache, Luella (Llewellyn Buckley), the mother‐
to‐be, Rikki (Richard Laubscher), the big‐boned model, Patricia (Peter Blease), short, young and
stocky and last but not least, representing the elderly, but also disabled, Gwen (Owen Gush), as he
8
was using a walking stick. Each model had to wear casual wear, and the second time around, a more
formal look.
These “girls” made the most of their time on the catwalk. They strutted their stuff, they pouted and
twirled and flirted with the guests. Gwen Gush enjoyed the attention so much that I had to
reprimand her from the stage to get moving – she was actually holding up the whole flow of the

show. According to everyone I spoke to afterwards, the show was a huge
success. Everyone enjoyed themselves, and our Barloworld guests, who
were sitting at the table next to us, literally videotaped the whole show.
They were clapping and cheering and especially enjoyed Alastair’s lyrics.
As I was leaving the next day to visit our children in the UK and the
Netherlands, everything had to be perfect before I left. We had plenty of
help afterwards to clean up the hall and of course, I was dead on my feet,
partly due to stress, but also because I had to finish my packing!
To put a show like this together is really not for sissies, but to my mind, it
was one of the most enjoyable and successful events we’ve had in the last
two years. A special thank you to the very professional services of our
lighting and sound engineers, Ian and Kassie. Alastair commented that he
has never worked with such a professional team before.
Whoever was too shy to come forward to participate, shame on you! You
don’t know what you missed – your 15 minutes of fame and maybe a
chance that a talent scout could pick you for the next South Africa’s Got
Talent!

PRINCE ALFRED’S HAMLET, Saturday 26th October by Mitford Roberts I must say, after rains of note on Friday, it was a pleasure to see blue skies amongst the clouds which lifted as the day went on and warmed up nicely. The usual meeting point Engen N1 was busy as usual. We left just after 7.00 to be in time for our 9.00 appearance. Five Morries, nicely paced drove from Cape Town, while two more met us en route. All the cars behaved well. So, our mascot Chuck, you can relax for a while!!! The turnout was about 27 cars in total, plus the farmers and their tractors. I think the cancellation of Killarney Classic Car Show played a big part in the attendance figures plus the weather factor of the previous days. Owen, Sandy, Richard and Bertha went off to see Norman, who had just been operated on the previous evening. Sadly, he passed away that night. He will be sorely missed. R.I.P
!!! _________________________________________________________________________ REGENT’S PARK (LONDON) ART EXHIBITION by Cristina Jones
During my recent trip to the UK, I went to one of my favourite places in London: Regent Park. Once a year, sculptors display their works of art in the English Gardens. This year, this exhibit caught my attention:
Zak Ové's large, colourful sculpture, "Autonomous Morris" (2018) is a mask made of parts of the most popular (aside from the Mini) British car, the Morris Minor. One of the standout pieces of this year's sculpture park, the mask is a clever combination of the totemic and futuristic. (Johanne Shurvell, Forbes Magazine, July 2019)

TECHNICAL TECHNICAL TIPS by Richard Laubscher
1. Hard Starting When you experience hard starting problems (misfiring) on your Morris, it is usually because you need to replace the spark plugs. Due to the change of the octane in our fuel, a layer is formed between the contact points and the porcelain of the spark plug, that prevents the current (spark) to ignite. This occurs when the settings on the carburetor is too rich. If this is the case, the plugs need to be replaced with Febi 13445 spark plugs for the 948cc and 1098cc engines. These are obtainable from Masterparts or even easier, get them from Mitford Roberts at our Regalia table. Your car should start immediately. It would be wise to start your car at least every 2 weeks to avoid hard starting.
2. Tuning the A-Series Engine. (Article out of The Morrie Muse February 2010)

WILLIE’S PIECE OF ADVICE by Willie Bouwer Starter Motor stuck
The starter motor (Bendix drive) is mounted on the RH side of the Morris engine on the flywheel housing. Starter motor needs no lubrication between overhauls. Should the starter motor pinion gets jammed with the flywheel ring gear, it can usually be freed by turning the squared end of the armature spindle with a spanner.
