November 2019

POTENTATE'S MESSAGEAs the fall season is upon us, and the winter season approaching we are about to come to the end of the 2019 Al Shamal year. It has been a rewarding year but also there have been a number of challenges. We need to remember why we are Shriners. We are here for our patients and need to all work together for our common goal.

There have been a number of projects that have been completed at the Shrine Center. These include the repairs, coating and drainage of the North wall; the main auditorium washrooms upgrade along with the Statue in the Park has also progressed after a number of years in discussion. Thanks to our Chief Rabban Calum Peace, our Recorder John Slade, our Treasurer Harold Olyan along with Past Potentate Ill. Sir Rick Shumilak in taking the lead on these projects. We also have a new tenant in the kitchen. Our last tenant outgrew the facility and we were lucky to quickly fill the space with a new tenant. Let’s support the new tenant by using them for our catering needs at our events.

On Friday, October 11, 2019 some members of the Divan travelled to Fort McMurray to install their new officers. We also have upcoming the Installation of Officers at the Al-Wa Shrine Club on Saturday, November 9, 2019; the Northern Lights Shrine Club on Friday, November 15, 2019 and the Battle River Shrine Club on Monday, November 25, 2019. I would like to thank all these clubs for their efforts and support this last year.

We are also coming into the season that a lot of our Units will be holding their Christmas parties. To all the Units and their members, please have a safe and Happy Christmas season. I would also like to thank all these Units for their efforts and support this last year along with the Chair of the Unit Heads, Noble Wayne Barrett.

The summer has also been busy with a number of parades that Al Shamal and various Units have participated in. The participation across the board is down this year. In the future, we must ensure that we follow Imperial

Shrine Parade Protocol in these events. There have been a number of instances and assumptions made in what can and cannot occur in these events. If you have any questions or require further clarification, please call and I would be glad to discuss any of your questions and concerns.

In September, we had a joint Ceremonial with Al Ahzar Temple in Calgary, Alberta on Friday, September 13, 2019 and Saturday, September 14, 2019. We welcomed two (2) new members that attended the hot sands along with two (2) new members that we initiated with a cold sands on Monday, October 7, 2019. With our membership numbers in decline, we must all make a concentrated effort to bring in new Members to Al Shamal. Get involved and support our membership chairman, Noble Bill Allen in his efforts to attract new members.

On another note, in running the business of the Temple, a number of individuals have been asked to assume key roles with none indicating that they would be willing to assist. We have elections at the December Stated Business Meeting and as of this writing we still require an Oriental Guide and will also require a High Priest and Prophet for the coming year. Nobles, if you are at all interested in any of these positions or helping in any way, please contact the Search Committee of Ill. Sir Barry Gogal or Ill. Sir Ari Hoeksema.

In closing, I would like to thank the Chief Aide, Noble Bob Disler, all of the Aides who assisted this year, along with everyone who has helped this past year. With your help and involvement this has been a great year. Nobles, get behind and support the 2020 Divan in supporting Al Shamal in the coming year. We have one of the best Temples in the P.N.S.A. If you are not involved, get involved; if you do not currently come to the dinner meetings, come out to the dinner meetings. To continue our success, we need your help. Get involved. Stay involved. Be active. Have some fun. We have the opportunity to be involved with a fraternity that supports the greatest philanthropy in the world. We need to be open to new ideas and to change. Change is good. If we were to continue doing the same things, the same way, how can we expect different results?

Let’s make the Shrine great again.

Ill. Sir Gary Semaniuk. Al - Shamal Potentate 2019.

RECORDER'S RAMBLINGSAs we now approach the end of another

busy year at the Shrine Centre we can look back and reflect on the achievements, they have been exceptional: I will start with the building as it is our second largest

asset behind the membership.

I have said many times before the Band-Aids were falling off this building and this year many peeled off all at once. The roof has finally been fixed with new water collection points and 3 new downspouts have been fitted. The chief Rabban has worked diligently with the contractor on the North wall so that has now been repaired, sealed and painted and the correct drainage system installed: what was done last year was totally inadequate and really a waste of our valuable finances. We had a serious leak within the centre of the building and with the above work completed further problems in that area should be alleviated. The main auditorium washrooms have now been completed: although not by the original contractor as he failed to accomplish the work to the satisfaction of the Divan. A second contractor was hired and the work completed.

Harold Olyan has pushed to have the statue erected. Thank you Harold. Although there is still more to do, again many Nobles who had promised to carry out certain tasks failed to complete any of the tasks “Talk is cheap actually doing/getting the work completed is the Hard Task”

Now to Al Shamal, again top of my list is membership we must realise that the “Good Ole Boys Club” is not working and plan to change our strategy and outlook, this will enable us possibly, to attract younger members from Freemasonry. This takes time and nurturing, we must be seen at Masonic Lodges, and at District meetings, as this is where the Shrine membership comes from. Merely stating that is the Divans job is incorrect as it is everyone’s job to attract new members to our philanthropy. So nobles attend lodges talk to Freemasons about what the Shrine does. When new members are enlisted, encourage them to join and participate in our units, make them feel welcome help them to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of the Shrine.

Freemasonry teaches that we are to make a daily advancement in Masonic knowledge and to communicate happiness to others, we must endeavour to create a good atmosphere throughout our life and how does one do that; you may ask, well….

George Wilhelm Freidrich Hegal has some pointers for us all according to Hegel himself, the most important thing a human can achieve through philosophy is not

knowledge, wisdom, power, will, or an unshakeable code of ethics and morals, no… the most valuable thing that one can achieve is… a good mood. “A good mood?” you may ask “how could that possibly be the best thing to achieve in life?”

Hegal continues; that the greatest mentality one can have is that of good humour, and that such a mentality can only be arrived at through a good mood. He explains that good humour is important because it enables a person to understand everything. Through good humour, anything and everything can be digested, empathized with, and related to.

How do we achieve this good mood? That is less simple to answer.

Perhaps this mood can be gained through good company... close friends… spending time with your family… reading a good book… going out into nature. And what do all of those things have in common?

Freedom.

The freedom to spend your time as you wish, assisting with our philanthropy at the Shrine centre, attending your unit functions, attending Blue lodge and generally seeing what requires care: building a stronger Shrine and Masonic lodge and living by the principles of Freemasonry “Then will be achieved the chief point of Freemasonry/Shrine to endeavor to be happy ourselves and communicate that happiness to others”.

Lady Barbara and I wish you and your families a Happy, Healthy, Uplifting and Joyful Christmas Season and a Prosperous and Safe New Year.

Yours in the faith John Slade, Recorder

A NIGHT WITH NESTOR PISTOR

The Provost Corps hosted a “Night with Nestor Pistor” on October 18th at the Al Shamal Shrine Centre. For those of you who don’t know, Nestor Pistor is an Al Shamal Shriner. A great job was done by the Al Shamal Provost Corps, for organizing a show that can be enjoyed across the generations. There were more than 25 tables of Nobles, ladies, family, friends and general public in the auditorium. It was a sell-out! All those who attended experienced the FUN that Al Shamal can generate. The evening began with a great Ukrainian meal of chicken kiev, holubsti, nalynyky, pyrizhky, sausage and homemade desserts and pies, WOW what a meal catered by Dwayne and Donna’s Eatery.

The opening act for Nestor Pistor was our own Past Potentate, Ari Hoeksema and his buddy Dr Sigmund Fraud. Sigmund is quite the funny guy and his jokes even makes Ari laugh, now that’s good entertainment! Nestor Pistor came on and entertained us for over two hours of jokes, stories and some knowledgeable facts! The one thing I really enjoyed, was listening to him sing. His voice is amazing. Being a Winnipeg boy, Nestor came and performed at different venues there, and my family and in-laws often speak of their visits to his various shows. It sure brought back a lot of fun memories for me.

If you missed this event, you missed a good time!

Ill. Sir Rick Shumilak

Noble Don Ast AKA Nestor Pistor & Ill. Sir Larry Howard

Here are our departed Nobles who have made the Great Pilgrimage across searing desert sands to the cool Oasis of Eternal Life. These gentle men were our Friends and Brethren and the void created by their leaving causes an ache in our hearts that will not soon go away.

PULL TABS(sniffle) Darn, the summer outdoor season is over! (sigh). Sitting on the deck, gone. Picnics in the park, gone. Camp fires, gone. Makes one sad enough to

want a a refreshment of some sort. As long as it involves a pull tab, I’m happy.

Pull tab: one little piece of high-grade aluminum that in its own small way helps our beloved Shrine. It helps keep the lights on, so to speak.

To all who take the time to crank them off beverage and other containers and set them aside so that I can haul them to Maple Leaf Metals to be turned into cash, thank you. To folks like you; to Bernie Sherrington, who takes the prize so far this year for herding together the donations from her many friends; to folks like Ill. Sir Rick Shumilak for helping deliver Bernie’s “loot” to my house; to the office staff (Denise and John) for their help in squirrelling away the donations received at our Shrine; to Nobles like Howard Barnsley and Kevin Peill from the Al Wa Shrine Club; and, to all those veterans at Strathcona Legion #150 who support our cause, thank you.

And, to those who think that collecting pull tabs is not such a big deal, remember the answer to the question of how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.

Happy collecting!

THURSDAY GOLF FUN GROUPThank you to all the golfers for the fun, fellowship and fantastic 2019 golf season! It is hard to believe how quick our golf season came and went. The wet weather we had this year certainly did not help, but despite the weather we were able to get in 16 games.

The windup was held September 19th at Legends with 22 players participating, followed by a steak barbeque and all the fixings. Special thank you to the non-players that joined us for the BBQ afterwards.

This year there was no winning team or prizes awarded except for one $25 gift certificate, which was left over from a previous year. After some careful thought, the two organizers decided that the gift certificate should be presented to the individual who played all the games. We reviewed our records and the winner was Bill Martin. Congratulations, Bill! We look forward to seeing everyone next year for the 2020 season.

If you are interested in joining this fun group of golfers next season, whether it be 9 holes or 18 holes contact: LaVerne Chartrand at 780-405-6303, email [email protected] or Gail Disler at 780-469-7188, email [email protected].

SILVER WINGSFall has been a busy season for the Silver Wings with

two successful events held at the Shrine Centre. On

Saturday, September 21, the Silver Wings hosted the

‘Taste of Scotland’ scotch tasting event. On hand to

serve as the Scotch connoisseur was the Whisky Guy

and CBC Radio columnist Stephen Richmond, who

is also the owner of Vines in Riverbend. The evening

was enjoyed by over 50 whisky fans. The Silver Wings

received significant fan fare for this event, and we may

host another similar event in the future.

The Silver Wings held their 8th Annual Halloween

Spooktacular pasta and chili night on Saturday, October

26. Over 100 people enjoyed the themed event raising

almost $1,000 net proceeds for the unit while enjoying

great food and fun. The Silver Wings would like to

thank all the volunteers who helped make this event a

success.

The Silver Wings wish all Shriners and their families a

very safe and merry Christmas. We thank the Divan for

their continued support. We look forward to 2020, when

our very own Calum Peace will serve as Potentate. We

hope 2020 is filled with success for incoming Calum,

the Divan and all other Shrine clubs and units.

November 2019

AL SHAMAL FLYERSAs winter approaches, the membership of the Flyers are waiting in anticipation for the next parade season where we will be rolling out our parade units. In the latest construction photograph, one will note how close we are to having these units complete. As mentioned in a previous edition of the Sahida, our fabricator overcame a serious health issue that took him out of commission for about 3 months this year and he is making up for lost time with value added craftsmanship.

On October 5 we held our first ever fund raiser event - Wine Survivor. Although the turn out was less than what we hoped, we had a lot of fun while playing some

very serious games. The winners of the event and their prizes were as follows:

• First Loser (First one kicked out): Greg Chartrand - One (1) bottle of wine

• Third Place - Deana Morton: Four (4) bottles of wine

• Second Place - Melissa Curran: Eight (8) bottles of wine

• First Place - Barb Woodland: Thirteen (13) bottles of wine

Putting on the event required help from a lot of people, namely: Denise and Don Buhay for tending bar, Wilma Bush and Kerri-Ann Boulanger for their tremendous help with everything (as usual!). Extra “entertainment” was provided by 10-year-old Caelyn Morton. We also had a few bottles used for prizes donated from good folks like Callum Peace. We also saw donations from Vinters Cellar Alberta from Sherwood Park. They donated some Al Shamal Shriners branded wine and a bottle of port. Thanks to Rick and Bev Shumilak who were instrumental in procuring this donation.

Finally, thanks to all who participated. We received valuable feedback for improvements and are pleased to say that we look forward to holding the next Wine Survivor event on October 3, 2020. Please mark your calendars and stay tuned for details.

Our unit meets the 2nd Thursday of the month in Biff’s Lounge at the Shrine Centre at around 6:00PM. Any Shriner (or Master Mason) who is interested in what we do is welcome to attend our meeting to find out what we are all about. Let any Flyer member know you that intend to come, and we will be sure to receive you.

Noble Trevor Morton

THE AL SHAMAL GREETERSThe Greeters, Mini Semis are now parked after the 2019 parade season, with miles on them. These little trucks are always a crowd pleaser at the different parades.

This summer saw the trucks take part in the Canada Day parade in Jasper. Their first time in this parade. A great time was had by the members who traveled out there. With just above freezing temperatures, the turn-out on the street was impressive. This parade included Lady Culbertson’s car with the Shrine message on the side, including the inflictions that are being treated and researched at the Shrine Hospitals. This was a great and visible way to get our message out to the public.

We saw four of our units driven in the Edmonton K Day parade. Lots of cheering and horn honking was heard. Global TV spent a few minutes reviewing one of our unit members. Mike Sobel, Global reporter was very intrigued with one of the semis, to the amusement of the crowd.

At the Onoway parade we received a ribbon for first place, for the Mini Semis. In this parade, Noble Dunlop, also drove his, 69 Chev pickup. The Shrine message was displayed on both sides. The truck and signs were attention getters.

As always, our trip to Ranfurly was an enjoyable day of parade and friendship. Thank you, Lady Louise, for opening your home to us.

The Greeters are in the process of obtaining a small trailer to haul one unit, to special events. These units are attention getters and by utilizing them year-round, it will allow the Shrine to be in the forefront, as we continue to look for support of our efforts.

We would like to thank and mention Don Grey, and staff from Titan Towing. They have been hauling the trailers with the units for us for the last three years. His support has been a big help to us.

Plans are underway for another parade year as we put miles on our trucks and smiles on faces of all along the parade routes.

November 2019

MEMBERSHIP REPORTA membership meeting was held on Friday, October 25th with hopes of setting up sub-committees and vice-chairs in order to proceed effectively into the future. Unfortunately, only 8 people were in attendance. The topics discussed were mentorship, community involvement and awareness and social engagements. Media exposure is another big item. We should be working jointly, with public relations. It is my feeling that P.R. should be included under the umbrella of Membership.

I have discussed the current membership committee dilemma with a couple of members of Al Shamal. Their job situations and/or personal commitments have them out of town often, but they have agreed to help us as much as possible. I will be meeting with more in the very near future.

As we are nearing the end of another year, all clubs and units will be electing new officers for the ensuing year. It is imperative that every club and unit elect/appoint a membership chairman for their club or unit. Every club or unit should strive to holding a minimum of 6 events per year. It all can start with the Unit/Club Membership Chair!

I am personally planning to visit all Al Shamal clubs and units in next year. It all boils down to every club/unit electing or appointing a Membership Chair. After your elections, please inform the Shrine Office of your membership chair along with all his contact information. This will be a great help in opening the door to communication and assisting in coordinating Shrine events.

For all of you who responded to the survey, earlier in the year stating that you would like to see some changes. Here is your chance! But remember, change begins with you. If you don’t step up to the plate and get involved by bringing your ideas forward, nothing is going to change. Let’s come together and put the FUN back into the Shrine.

One final note, your 2020 membership is now due and is payable in several different ways. Please take a moment to check your card and get your membership up to date at your earliest convenience.

Noble Bill Allen Membership Committee Chairman

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the Al Shamal Nobles who were so kind and generous in giving their time to help us with setting up and tearing down at our Craft and Gift Show.

TLC CORPS REPORT

The TLC Corp members sadly said goodbye to one of our long-time members. Nobel Bill L’Hirondelle passed away on September 25th, 2019, at the age of 89 years. Bill will be ever remembered for his wit, sense of humor, and his beautiful bright smile. Rest in Peace Bill, you will be missed!

This year’s Parade Season has once again come to an end, and the “firetrucks” have been stored for the winter. We are looking forward to next year’s parades and hopefully, better weather will enable us to have more move-outs in 2020.

The TLC Corps will be having our Christmas Party on November 23rd in Biff’s Lounge. Tickets are $30 per person, and we are looking forward to an evening of fun and fellowship. Join us if you can! Reserve your tickets with LaVerne Chartrand as soon as possible as there are a limited number of tickets available.

The TLC Corps would like to extend a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all Shriners, their Ladies and families.

STATUE IN THE PARK

On October 6, 2019, after many years of planning and raising money for the Al Shamal Shrine Centre to have an “Editorial without Words” statue, it was finally lifted into place that sunny afternoon. Last year the decision was made to move forward with this project, a site selected, and the statue ordered. The project was headed up by our treasurer, Noble Harold Olyan.

This spring, the front of the Al Shamal Centre building was cleared out, for the statue and to make a park-like area surrounding the “Editorial without Words”

statue. Excessive rain delayed progress, but in mid September the base was poured by Brett Garden of Garden Concrete services. The statue was lifted into place by Dave Gilbert and the crew of Ultra-Traxx Inc. A BIG THANK-YOU to these 2 contractors, who donated most of their time to Al Shamal because of the work we do for the kids.

Moving forward, plans include landscaping the surrounding area with grass and a patio area with benches. A mural on the wall behind the statue will be the background for a picture perfect setting. The layout also includes trees, shrubs and lighting to highlight the statue.

It was great working with Harold on this vision of beautifying our Shrine Centre so that we can show the public what the Shriners stand for.

Ill. Sir Rick Shumilak

Join Us in Kansas City for the 2020 Imperial SessionThe 146th Imperial Session of Shriners International will take place in Kansas City, Missouri, July 5-9, 2020. All nobles, ladies and their families are invited to join Imperial Sir Jeff Sowder and Lady Cheryl for the fraternity’s biggest event of the year.

Kansas City is such a friendly place that you’ll feel welcome from the moment you arrive. Combining a new urban spirit with traditional Midwestern sensibility, Kansas City offers an array of food, history, art and family-friendly activities. Come enjoy “the Paris of the Plains” with us while celebrating the fun, fellowship and philanthropy that makes Shriners International the greatest fraternity in the world.

America’s HeartlandThe Power & Light District is conveniently located near the Imperial Session convention center and hotels. With more than 50 restaurants, bars, shops and entertainment venues, the Power & Light District offers something for everyone. Explore the area via the Kansas City Single Loop City Tour, a 90-minute narrated event. And no trip to Kansas City is complete without a stop in The Plaza, a unique, 15-block shopping and dining district distinguished by its Spanish-inspired architecture.

Traveling with the kids? They’ll love Worlds of Fun and Oceans of Fun, a combined amusement and water park covering 300 acres. Or try Go Ape Treetop Adventure, a zip line canopy tour that your family won’t forget. For something more warm and fuzzy, check out the Kansas City Zoo, Crown Center’s Sea Life Aquarium or Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead. Don’t miss lunch at Fritz’s restaurant, where a working model train delivers your food right to your

table. Other great family venues are Union Station’s Science City and Planetarium, LegoLand, and Crayola Kansas City.

History lovers won’t want to miss the National World War I Museum and Memorial. Arranged in a narrative style, the exhibit takes visitors on an epic journey through this historical era, allowing them to experience deeply personal stories of courage, honor, patriotism and sacrifice. Students of presidential lore will recognize the Kansas City area as the birthplace of President Harry S. Truman, who was a member of Ararat Shriners for more than 50 years. Visit the Harry S. Truman Library & Museum to learn more about this fascinating citizen, president, and Shriner. Another historical highlight of the city is the Gangster Tour.

To absorb a little culture, check out the Bloch Galleries, which feature paintings by Van Gogh, Picasso, Cezanne and Monet, as well as Chinese and Contemporary art collections. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art features everything from ancient to contemporary works. Both are free. Or take in a show at the Kansas City Rep, one of the best-kept secrets in the Midwestern theater scene.

Feeling hungry? Kansas City is known all over the world for three things – barbecue, steaks and craft beers. For barbecue, try Arthur Bryant’s, Gates BBQ or Smokehouse BBQ. Top choices for steaks include Majestic Steak House and Pierpont’s at Union Station. Craft beer breweries and small wineries can be found throughout the city.

Kansas City Convention Center The 2020 Imperial Session will be held at the Kansas City Convention

Center. Combining simple elegance and modern amenities, it’s the perfect space for our annual gathering. The Municipal Auditorium features inspiring Art Deco architecture from the inside out. With an arena, exhibition hall, music hall and the Little Theatre all under its roof, it’s a unique and inviting place for our fraternity to gather.

We Hope to See You ThereWe look forward to seeing you at our annual Shriners family reunion in this energetic and welcoming city. We promise it will be one to remember.
