StarWatch By Gary Becker - Read by Moonlight I used to hate when the full moon dominated the night sky. Its light hid the stars, nebulae, and clusters—all of the “beautiful” objects that I wanted to observe with a new telescope that I had spent about two years constructing. I was 18 at the time. Moonlight was also the ban of meteor observing, the avenue through which I became involved in astronomy. A bright moon, even against a very transparent sky, decreases shooting star rates by about 75 percent. Fortunately, age has tempered my

Luna are posted with the online version of this article at www.astronomy.org. When my grandfather, Ewald Marcus, was

light of a bright moon. Yes, he always mentioned that there was a snowpack on the ground, but that is not a prerequisite for a successful read. What most people fail to realize is that it takes time for the eye to dark adapt to the moon’s subdued

location which is away from direct or indirect exterior lighting, except for the moon. You’ll have plenty of time to conduct this experiment, because as the week unfolds, the moon continues to brighten as it grows through its gibbous phase, where both sides appear to be bulbous in shape. A very bright star will appear to trail the moon on Sunday. That’s Jupiter! On Monday (1/21), the moon approaches Jupiter to within a degree, a beautiful sight with or without binoculars. The moon reaches its full phase late on the evening of the 26th. www.astronomy.org

Quick Tips: Travel TipIf you are traveling abroad with

your pet, check with your veterinarian fi rst to fi nd out if your pet needs any vaccinations. Rabies vaccinations are required for all travel, but you may fi nd that you need other shots as well. If your vet is unsure, do some research to fi nd out if you need to take any precautions before you head to the airport. If you are going to be gone for a while, make sure that your pet’s vaccinations do not lapse while you are gone. You must have a current rabies vaccination to return to the United States.

Green Living TipPipe insulation tubes will not only

keep your pipes from freezing in the winter, they can also save you money. These tubes can hold a hot water pipe’s heat for up to an hour after the tap is used. This means less heat loss to a cold pipe the next time you run hot water through it. Be sure to install the insulating tube correctly for maximum effi ciency.

Food TipTo help keep your pantry more

organized, discard excess packaging before storing your food items. It is often easier to remove the overwrap from things like paper towel multipacks and boxes of individual snack packs. You may fi nd it easier to transfer some small items to bins in your pantry. This keeps you from having a half empty box sitting on a shelf taking up space.

Scottish Poet Robert Burns Birthday TeaSunday, January 27, 2 p.m. at Campbell County Public Library

Burns was a Scottish poet who is known world-wide though he died at a young age more than 200 years ago. Did you sing “Auld Lang Syne” on New Year’s Eve? Then you know Burns. Why is your library celebrating a dead Scottish poet’s birthday? Scottish culture is a critical part of early Wyoming and Campbell County ranch history. “Campbell” is even Scottish. And Burns is FUN! This tea is a kickoff for a series of community events that will be happening now through May celebrating United States culture and food! Key Ingredients: America by Food is a Smithsonian Institution traveling exhibit that will be on display at the library March 16 through April 25. The exhibit is part of the Museum on Mainstreet, a collaboration between the Smithsonian and the Wyoming Humanities Council. Locally Campbell County Public Library and Campbell County Rockpile Museum are teaming up to bring this exhibit to Gillette. Key Ingredients explores the cultural and historical forces that shape American regional cuisine and the connections between Americans and the foods they produce, prepare, preserve, and serve.

Our Burns celebration will include all things Scottish - decor, refreshments, entertainment, and of course, Burns poetry. Bring a favorite Burns poem to share in our open-mic poetry reading or draw a poem from our hat to read. Join your friends from the Campbell County Historical Society and Rockpile Museum with the music, laughter, stories and food of the Scots and get to know Robert Burns. You’ll also have an opportunity to buy a chance to win a Robert Burns basket - haggis, scotch, books, and more.

Things you may not know about Rabbie Burns:•Burns was born on January 25, 1759 and died July 21, 1796 in Alloway, Ayrshire Scotland.•Burns is considered one of the most famous characters of Scotland’s cultural history and a pioneer of the Romantic Movement.•Burns was the fi rst person featured on a commemorative Coke bottle in 2009.•There are more public statues of Robert Burns around the world than any other writer. •The title for Holden Caulfi eld’s “Catcher in the Rye” comes from Burns’ “Coming Through the Rye.”•Abraham Lincoln could recite Burns’ works by heart.•John Steinbeck’s most famous book title “Of Mice and Men” came from Burns’ “To a Mouse.”•In 2008, Michael Jackson was reported to be producing an album of Burns poetry.•The work of Burns has appeared in hundreds of fi lms and television programs, including “It’s a Wonderful Life” (1946), “When Harry Met Sally” (1989) and the 2008 fi lm version of “Sex in the City”.•Bob Dylan selected Burns’ “A Red, Red Rose” as the source of his greatest creative inspiration.•Robert Burns wore his hair in a ponytail in defi ance of his father as a teenager. No one’s saying he was perfect!•Burns fathered at least 13 children by four different women. Again...not perfect!CCPLS and the museum have formed county-wide partnerships and are coordinating events and exhibits

in conjunction with Key Ingredients.

Attracting Backyard Visitors

Winter is a great time to begin

attracting and feeding birds around your home. The key is to keep your bird feeders clean and fi lled. During the winter months, fi ll your feeders every day, but only with an amount of seeds that the birds will eat in a day. This helps protect from scavengers such as squirrels and raccoons.

If there is snow in your yard, stamp down the snow around the feeder to allow birds to forage off the ground. Birds also need a steady supply of water for drinking and bathing. You can purchase small birdbath heaters to prevent your water source from freezing.

To keep birds coming back to your feeder, you will need to clean it. Use a mild bleach solution (1/4 cup bleach to two gallons of warm water) and be sure to rinse your feeder very well. With some luck and a bit of tender loving care, your yard can become an oasis to many feathered friends.

Safe Driving at Any Age As you age, you may notice a change in your driving ability. It may become harder

to look over your shoulder to change lanes or leg weakness may make it diffi cult to move quickly from the gas to the brake pedal. There is also a decrease in reaction times as we age.

It is a challenge sometimes to know when a senior is unable to continue driving. These signs can help you to decide if there is reason for an older motorist to give up driving.

- Eyesight problems may interfere with the ability to focus, to use peripheral vision, or to see at night. If there is a reduction in functional eyesight, this should be evaluated by a doctor.

- If your hearing is decreasing, it can affect your driving ability. You should still be able to hear other cars honking, sirens, and the sound of cars accelerating next to you.

- Refl exes diminish as we age and can cause a change in our driving functions. A good driver should be able to brake and look behind very quickly. You should also be able to move quickly between the gas and brake pedals without hesitation.

- If a driver is beginning to become frustrated or confused while driving, this could be a sign of impaired driving ability. You should be able to navigate roads well without getting lost frequently. If there are increased signs of anger or frustration, it may be time to consider if driving alone is still a reasonable choice.

- If a senior begins to have trouble with memory, this is a strong sign that driving may no longer be safe. Impaired memory can lead to confusion and getting lost. When landmarks, exits, and familiar streets no longer seem like second nature, it can indicate a problem. Everyone, even a young driver, has occasional lapses in memory while driving, but if it becomes a pattern or causes a problem, it may be time to get evaluated by a doctor.

- A decrease in general driving ability is also a strong indicator that it may be time to stop driving. If an older driver cannot stay in his or her lane, drifts into other lanes, brakes at inappropriate times, or does not accelerate to a safe speed, does not use turn signals, or ignores traffi c signs, it may be time to stop driving altogether.

- Finally, a red fl ag is numerous traffi c citations or even accidents. If the older person in your life begins to relate stories of frequent “close calls,” or you see dents or scrapes on the car or fences, mailboxes, a garage door, or curbs, it is time for a serious talk about his or her driving ability.

(Family Features) Money management is one skill that can be diffi cult for young adults to master as they head off on their own. But no matter what stage of life - whether they’re entering college or the work force - every young adult should learn how to handle their money.

Establish a BudgetSit down together with your student and map out all monthly expenses. Include room and board or rent, books, supplies, food, personal care and medications, transportation, gas, entertainment (including dining out, movies and walking around money, etc.), and payment for phone, mobile devices, cable and Internet access. Then, fi gure out income. This can include money from a job, fi nancial aid, student loans and any support from you.

Income and expenses need to balance. There are plenty of online tools you can use to fi gure out a budget. Some, such as www.Mint.com or some bank websites, can help students manage their budgets, making it easy for them to take care of it themselves. There are also budgeting tips and worksheets at websites such as www.SmartAboutMoney.org.

How to Stick to the BudgetPrioritize needs vs. wants. It may seem like a latte every morning is a necessity to jump-start the day, but those kinds of little expenses can add up quickly. A recent study by Westwood College

found that 40 percent of the average student’s budget is being spent on “discretionary” spending; included in that is entertainment (6.5 percent), apparel and services (6.7 percent), travel and vacation (4.7 percent). Have your student do the math on how much some of their “necessities” will cost them, and then talk about how to weigh purchase decisions.

Find ways to spend less. A little planning can help young adults spend less and get more value for their dollar.

* Cellphone - Avoid overage charges with an unlimited plan. For example, with Cricket Wireless, you can pay an affordable monthly fee for all-inclusive talk, text, data and music rate plans for some of the most popular smartphones available. Cricket also includes a service called Muve Music that gives students unlimited song downloads as part of their plan. Learn more at www.

MyCricket.com. * Food - Coupons and digital deals can cut the costs of dining out. Look into the college meal plan - and use it. Save on snacks by stocking up at the grocery store instead of buying from a vending machine or convenience store.* Clothing - Thrift stores, consignment shops and yard sales are affordable ways to fi nd something fun to wear. * Entertainment - Encourage them to take advantage of free activities on campus with their student ID. When going out with friends, advise your student to decide how much he or she can spend, then only take that much money with them.

Be smart about credit cards. Many students sign up for a credit card right away, and before they know it, they are thousands of dollars in debt. Make sure they understand the impact of interest rates. Also, discuss setting limitations on using a credit card to avoid non-academic debt, such as using it only for emergencies, travel or school expenses, or only charging what they can pay back on time the next month (including interest).

Equipping your student with some basic fi nancial skills will help them make wise money choices now and for the rest of their lives.
