Vol. 39 No. 18 15 th July 2010 ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Dear members of the Marcellin College family, One of the great joys of my role is the opportunity to interview families who are considering Marcellin as a place they wish to send their sons. All of you have been through this process. I wonder how many of you though can remember the first question that was asked of you at that interview. The question is: why have you chosen Marcellin as the school to which you wish to send your son? This is a fairly straight forward question but it is also one which often elicits an interesting response. When attending to this question many parents suggest that it is difficult to quantify or even qualify their reasons. They tell us that they have been impressed with our approach to educating boys or they speak of their appreciation for our vast co- curricular program or they discuss our thoughtful pastoral care structure. In the end, though many suggest that it is not these tangible programs or policies but rather a less tangible ‘gut feeling’ which convinces them to send there sons to our school. I believe that I can provide some meaning and substance to the ‘gut’ response that these parents feel so strongly. I believe that it is clearly our Marist Charism which is at the heart of the feelings these parents are attempting to articulate. Charism is a word we don’t often hear in the secular world in which we live. Brother John McMahon, former Principal at Marcellin College and regional Director of Marist Schools Australia – Southern Province describes Charism as a gift, a talent bestowed on us by God. Our task in a Marist School is to recognise and highlight the gifts that the Marist Charism has brought to our school and use them in support of the young men in our care. To be true to the development and sustainability of a Religious Charism there is a need to utilise every legitimate opportunity to educate all members of the community - students, parents and staff with regard to the foundational stories and philosophy of the particular religious tradition. Ways of providing for the long term sustainability of the Marist charism are absolutely essential for as Br John McMahon tells us if we are not careful charism can give way to the force of daily routine. With these thoughts in mind this week the whole staff of Marcellin College spent time reflecting on our Marist Charism and discerning ways and means of strengthening our commitment to and understanding of this vital element on the identity of Marcellin. To support us through this process we were fortunate to have Br. Julian Casey fms – Provincial of the Marist Brothers Melbourne Province, speak to us about what it means to be a lay Marist in the 21 st century. Following Br Julian’s address all those present had not only increased their understanding of the significance of the Marist Charism but had also resolved to continue to put this knowledge into practice in consistent and sustained ways in supporting the boys of Marcellin to grow to become good Christians and good citizens of our society. The staff came up with a number of resolutions founded on the five pillars of the Marist Charism which will influence their ways of operating as Lay Marists at Marcellin College. It is my hope that through this work all who join the Marcellin College community will gain that same ‘gut feeling’ to educate boys in a setting where St. Marcellin himself described that all students would be loved and loved equally. One of the many concepts introduced to us by Brother Julian during our Retreat day was that of Marist leadership. I leave you with some of his reflections on the way he believes St. Marcellin would want us to lead and support the young men in our care. To be a good Marist leader in the tradition of St. Marcellin Champagnat one needs to model the following… Have a passion to make Jesus known and loved Show interest and concern for all you come in contact with. Maintain healthy discipline Be optimistic and faith-filled Display self possession in times of crisis, disapproval and criticism

REFLECTIONREFLECTIONREFLECTIONREFLECTION Education throughout life is based on four pillars

Learning to know, learning to do, Learning to live together and learning to be.

Formal education systems tend to emphasise the acquisition

of knowledge to the detriment of other types of learning, but it is vital now

to conceive education In a more encompassing fashion.

To educate children is to develop, strengthen

And bring to perfection every faculty or their souls. Above all, it is to form their hearts, their wills, their

characters, Their consciences and their judgements….

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL Mr. Adriano Di Prato

Welcome back I wish to welcome back all students and families to Term 3. I particularly wish to acknowledge the Class of 2010 who enter their final semester at Marcellin. The vast majority of their formal assessment occurs throughout this semester with internal Unit 4 SAC tasks, then end of year VCAA exams fast approaching. It is vital that all these young men focus on their goals and aspirations to do very well in their academic studies. The Marcellin community wishes them well. Term 3 Assembly The term commenced with an assembly held in the Quadrangle on Wed 14th July. The focus of this assembly was student achievement. The College recognised the following groups of students:

Students who represented Australia at a recent World Schools Cross Country Championship, held in Slovakia.

Students who represented the College at the recent Marist Basketball Carnival, held in Traralgon.

Students participating in REMAR. In addition to this the College presented Year 11 student Christopher Walsh as the successful applicant to attend the Blessed Mary MackKillop Canonization, which will be held in Rome later this year. The entire Marcellin Community wishes to acknowledge and congratulate all these students and the staff responsible for providing these opportunities. Australian Diving Championships Mathew Pozzobon of Year 9 recently returned from the Australian Diving Championships, held in Perth, where he competed in the 10m platform and the 3m springboard. He was up against 85 divers from across Australia, many of whom have diving scholarships and training at the AIS. The College wishes to congratulate Mathew for placing 4th in Australia! This is a fine achievement.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL – OPERATIONS Mr. Oscar Morandini

Marcellin College together with the Manningham City Council are committed to promoting traffic safety around the school. We are proud of the efforts of our crossing supervisors and teachers on before and after school duty, ensuring that our boys are able to safely arrive and depart from the College.

Please remember that the local law officers actively patrol the school to ensure that parking restrictions are being observed and traffic flow is promoted. Parent Tips For Legal Parking Around Schools 1. KNOWLEDGE Be aware of all parking restrictions around the school. 2. COMMON SENSE Be prepared to stop/park your vehicle further away from the school. 3. COMMUNICATION When picking up your son, agree on a location that is both legal and safe. If your son is waiting at a bus stop, keep driving and find a legal stopping area. 4. Organisation Avoid peak times by dropping your son 5-10 minutes earlier and/or 5-10 minutes later when picking up your son. 5. UNDERSTANDING Loading/unloading passengers in a restricted parking area is unacceptable and deemed illegal. 6. ROLE MODEL Set a good example for your school community and your own child by observing the parking restrictions, especially in Sandra Street. Tips for safely using school crossings 1. Obey the signals from the crossing supervisor 2. Wait behind the crossing supervisor as vehicles are driving past 3. Walk between the white lines Clarification of school parking restrictions Schools have a number of parking restrictions on the roads near and outside schools. Some restrictions display signage such as No-Stopping, No Parking, Bus Zones Bus Stops and permissible parking areas up to 5 minutes. Other restrictions rely on the driver’s knowledge of Road Rules Victoria 2009, such as double parking, stopping too close to intersections and stopping on or near children’s crossings. Definitions of each offence are provided below.

Definitions of offences around schools

NO-STOPPING – A driver must not stop on a length of road or in an area to which a no stopping sign applies.

NO-PARKING – A driver of a vehicle must not stop on a length of road or in an area to which a no parking sign applies, unless the driver; (a) Is dropping off, or picking up, passengers or goods; (b) Does not leave the vehicle unattended; and (c) Completes the dropping off, or picking up, of the passengers or goods, and drives on as soon as possible.

For this rule, a driver leaves a vehicle unattended if the driver leaves the vehicle so the driver is over 3 meters from the closest point of the vehicle. Stopped or near a children’s crossing – A driver must not stop on a children’s crossing, or on the road within 20 meters before the crossing and 10 meters after the crossing. Parents who drive students to the College Those who enter via Bulleen Road are asked to drop students only at the designated bus stop area, at the round about. Those who approach via Sandra Street are particularly requested not to enter the College roadway, but to “set down” in Sandra Street and continue on to the end of Sandra Street. This will avoid the danger of congestion at the College entrance – taken from page 22, Student Planner.

DIRECTOR OF STUDENTS - Years 10 -12 Mr. Jamie McIlroy

Year 10 Parents/Guardians Over the last month your son has hopefully had some significant and positive experiences in the workplace after their work experience placement and participation in community service. It is hoped that your son continues this journey of self discovery as he embarks on the next semester of College life. To support your son’s serious discernment in future pathways the College has organized a number of opportunities for both you and your son to take advantage of. On Friday 23rd July, Darren Pereira, a motivational speaker is speaking to the Year 10 cohort, with the theme “Shape your Destiny”. With a focus on growing in self awareness and setting achievable goals, students are to be provided with a workbook to take notes and challenged to set some goals for themselves. I urge you to engage with your sons about the lessons he may learn from Darren and become aware of the goals he may have made. An assembly for students to consider their subject selection is scheduled for Tuesday 20th July and this is followed up with a VCE 2010 Expo & Parent Information Night that night. Your son needs to be thinking about his life post-secondary school, rather than from year to year. Your support and presence in your son’s journey is most valuable as he starts to make his own decisions about his future. Parents and students are also encouraged to participate in the Live Smart Study Skills sessions that shall take place on Thursday August 12th, 19th and 26th from 7.00 till 9.30pm. More information is to follow on this seminar that is given by Dr David Morrissey.

Year 12 Memorabilia Year 12 students have until Friday 23rd July to have ordered and paid for their 2010 Hoodie and singlet. Please place the order on McOnline. Just go to the VCE Information and Resources site. Money is to be paid to Mr McIlroy by the above date.

Education Maintenance Allowance - Second Instalment Applications that have been approved and paid for Semester 1 do not require any action for Semester 2 to allow the second round of payments to be generated unless the situation has changed for any of the applicants. Claim forms for the new applicants of those whose circumstances have changed need to be submitted to Marcellin College by August 6, 2010. Parents are required to enter their name, Centrelink Reference Number (CRN) and Payment type Code in the same format as shown on their Pensioner Concession Card or Health Care Card on the “Education Maintenance Allowance Application Form”, which can be obtained from the Finance Department or at the Front Reception Desk. The CRN will be referred to Centrelink to enable verification of entitlement as at the first day of Term 3, July 12, 2010. It is important that the name, CRN and Payment Type Code of the main card holder is correctly recorded on the application form, as any error will result in the claim failing the verification process, which may delay payment.

LIBRARY NEWS Mr. Jim Sheridan

Welcome back to term three from the library staff. It is an exciting term for us as we will be implementing our new library management system. A lot of work has gone into the implementation of this system and there is still a lot of work to be done. I will explain more developments of the implementation as it occurs. Following is the graphs of the Victorian Premier’s Reading Challenge (VPRC). The students in Years 7 – 9 are quiet interested in which core group from each year level will be awarded the free lunch. The group that does get the free lunch is the core group that has read the most books verified by the closing date for the VPRC. For the books to be registered in the VPRC the student would have submitted a form to one of the library staff. The student was then issued with their username and password – which is their student number and initials in lower case, eg. 12345.

The student must log on the VPRC website and record the books that they have read. The student should also be keeping a log of the books that they have read. This log must be signed by their parents indicating that they have read the books listed. This signed list must then be shown to one of the Teacher-Librarians who will ‘verify’ the books. The verification needs to begin as the VPRC will finish on the 31 August 2010. If the books are not verified the student will not have their books counted for their Core group or their House and will be ineligible for the 10 points they could gain for their College Colours. Up to this stage 844 books have been listed. There are three students who have met the challenge of the VPRC: Michael Williams 7.3, 21 books, Matthew Dabal 7.3, 17 books and Ben Cunningham 9.8, 68 books. Congratulations!
