Your Options are Not Limited

Dating in a smaller city isn’t as awful aseveryone makes it seem. In fact, if you findyourself constantly complaining about yourlack of suitors you might want to re-thinkyour own attitude, ‘cause that might be whyyour dating life is so dismal.

Maybe it’s because you’ve already hooked up with half of thepeople in town, or maybe it’s cause you’re just friends with most of thedecent ones, but for some reason your outlook is bleak. You can’t seemto find a lasting relationship so you blame it on the city you’re living in.Duh.

But instead of playing the blame game why don’t you look insideyourself. What do you really want from someone? What do you wantfrom a relationship? If you want something that is gonna last, then stopthrowing yourself at the first guy who gives you attention. When you dothis, you’re giving off the impression that you’re only in it for the one-night stands. If you want a relationship built on respect then you need torespect yourself first, otherwise no one else is going to.

Sure, there are not a million people to choose from in a smaller city, butyou should look at this as a positive thing. You don’t have to sift throughhundreds of guys to find your prince charming because there’s a chanceyou already know him, maybe you even went to high school together? There are plenty of great guys in every small city and they’re not all offthe market.

So stop hating on your location and start seeing the possibilities. Thenext great love of your life could be that acquaintance you run in to atthe bar from time to time, or maybe the person you always see at yourlocal coffee shop. The good thing about finding someone who sharesyour geography is that you’re bound to have stuff to talk about. Whetherit’s friends-of-friends or your high schools’ rivalries, you’ll automaticallybe able to talk about stuff because you’ll share something in commonright off the bat—your city!

There are plenty of perks that come with dating someone in your region, mostly the convenience and the shared roots. You won’t know thisthough, until you open your mind and start listening to your heart. Traveloutside of your comfort zone; meet people outside of your main group

of friends. Put yourself out there and you’ll realize you never needed to travel veryfar at all. Love is all around us, but if you’re too busy focusing on the negative; thegood will pass you by. Find yourself, respect yourself, and open your eyes to what’sright in front of you.

Well I am happy toreport that mynew sign is up atmy shop. I lovethe fact that itreally highlights

what goes on thereon a regular basis:

“Naturally Deliciouswith the Health Nut -A place to be nourished, aplace to share, a place tolaugh, a place to learn”.*My new shop is located at:812 Pitt Street, unit 40 (justpast Earthway Chiropractic Clinic, on the left side. Small restaurant with theblack railing).

I feel very blessed to meet such amazing individuals on a weekly basis.I love seeing their reaction before they try something new and out of theordinary. For example they have recently tried my gluten/egg/dairy freechickpea chocolate chip cookies and my raw pumpkin/oatmeal cookies. They are always pleasantly surprised….how amazingly tasty these are…

I want people to live and experience how easy it truly is to live theirbest lives ever! I offer many raw desserts (which are not cooked and easierto digest) such as raw apple pie, raw love crumble, energy bars, rawquinoa/goji berry bars, raw chia seed/honey fruit jams… etc. Oncesomeone sees another trying it or raving about it, they automatically wantit to…it’s a great healthy domino effect.

A great group of 20 participants came to my “Introduction to juicing”workshop last Friday evening. With the help of many demos, tastetesting and the viewing of an amazing juicing documentary they werereally able to put everything into perspective. Many are now incorporatingthis into their lives in baby steps. Good for you ladies for putting yourhealth first…like our good friend Joe would say “JUICE ON MATES”!

This Hallowe’en season, I havedecided to hand out some Cornwall City gift certificates to my favorite little

Health Nuts! They can choose to eithergo swimming at The Aquatic Centre orSkating at The Benson Centre forFREE…how’s that for a healthy gift? Verycool!!! These are available at TheBenson Centre…$10 for 10certificates….they expire December31st, 2013.

How about a world coveredin snow!I know winter is around the corner and I amdreading it already. I’m not looking forward toputting on boots and extra layers for the next 5months. I think we should invent weather towersthat alter the weather of the world…wait come tothink of it that’s what they did in the Colony, and

they screwed it up royally.

Imagine a world covered in snow where pockets of survivors liveunderground in giant industrial complexes and mines. Our story takes placein a post-apocalyptic frozen future. For Laurence Fishburne, who playsBriggs the colonies leader, it’s also post-elyptical as well…for people whoare starving to death eating veggies and protein Fishburne has certainlypacked on the beef. [sidebar – he talks about this in the behind the scenesfootage on the DVD which is amazing]

The film follows Sam (Kevin Zegers – Canadian actor born in Woodstock ON)as he and Briggs and Graydon (Atticus Mitchell – Yup another young Canuck)head to a neighboring colony that sent out a distress signal and then wentoff-line. When they arrive they are astounded and horrified by what they

find, and have to make it back to their colony without the horror following them. Ofcourse in the midst of all of this they learn that there is another colony north of themthat has discovered a way of revering the frozen wasteland effects but have no seedsto plant, which Sam’s colony has plenty! That’s convenient!

There’s a love story as well that is present between Sam and Kai (Charlotte Sullivan –yes she’s from Toronto too) which I’m not entirely sure was needed, however she’slovely in her post-apocalyptical hairdo…so I guess it makes sense.

Then we get to Bill Paxton who plays Mason, and as his name suggests is an ex-jarhead who is now the law. You get a cold. You go into isolation. Then he kills you. Prettymuch the crux of his character. I enjoyed this movie. It’s Canadian, filmed in Canada, and the special effects are reallyquite amazing. I would have tweaked the story a little, but all in all, it’s a good, coldHollywood of the North production!

As far a premise, this movie’s post-apocalyptical. Don’t expect it to be anything else. Before buying I read a review of the “over realistic” gun fire. Really? What becauseevery time they fire a shot it sounds like they are shooting in a basement? The snowcrunches below the actors’ feet because it was real snow. They shot the undergroundscenes miles underground. Can’t get any more realism than that!

Next week I’ll have my review of the Hunt. Until then my filmsies (sorry for the typolast week) don’t chew that gum under your seat! Unless of course you left it there…

How quickly our weather seems to change.Last week I was out in my yard picking myraspberries in a short-sleeved teeshirt. Thismorning is cold and rainy. It's is time toenjoy a lovely steaming bowl or mug ofhomemade soup. Last week, after roastingone of my store's locally raised, plumpjuicy chickens, I saved the carcass andmade a big pot of delicious and nutritioussoup.

You really have to comeand try one of ourchickens!During theDepression,(this was inthe 1930's) my Mum toldme that my Nanny couldmake a potful of soupfrom just shoelaces. Iknow that was a bigexaggeration but nevertheless, when money is tight, soup fits thebill for nutrition and being economical. My Nanny, during theDepression, would give a bowlful of her soup and some homemadebread to many hungry 'down on your luck men' who were hoppinga train in hopes of finding some work. My Mum and Nanny nevercould figure out how they would find her house to be given a warmmeal. They thought maybe some sticks or stones were placed onthe sidewalk to show them the way to her house. My husband justsuggested that it was word of mouth, the word being passed onthat there was someone who would give them a warm meal. MyNanny would feed them outside of her house, on a picnic table. Ithink that was a wonderful story of my Nanny'skindness and generosity to help others in need. Let'shope we can do the same!

GOOD CHICKEN SOUPINGREDIENTS:FIRST PUT THIS IN YOUR SOUP POT - making a flavourful broth:all the bones and and skin from a cooked chicken (or from a turkey)2 or 3 quarts of cold water1 onion, cut into halfthe green tips of garden leeks, cut off and rinsed wella carrot just scrub it but don't peel it, cut in chunksa stalk of celery, cut into chunks-Allow this to boil, then turn the heat down to a simmer and cookfor about 1- 1/2 hours.-Using a slotted spoon, lift all the bones and vegetables from thesoup pot. Discard the vegetables.-Once cooled slightly, pick off any bits of chicken from the bonesand put them back into your soup pot. Discard the bones.NOW YOU START ON YOUR SOUP - TO THE SOUP POT, ADD:7 carrots, peeled and sliced thinly3 ribs of celery, sliced thinly2 onions, diced2 parsnips, peeled and sliced1/4 of a turnip, peeled and diced3 large kale leaves, cut off the tough stalk and slice up the leaves2 cups of previously cooked, mashed squash (if you have freshsquash, just dice it up and add it in) I find squash gives a lovelyflavour to any chicken of turkey soup.3 chicken bouillon cubes4 cups water (or enough to well cover all of the vegetables - youdecide)3/4 cup of elbow macaroni1/2 tsp. black peppercorns (or ground black pepper)-Allow your soup to simmer away until all of the vegetables aretender.-If you wish, make some homemade bread to go along with yoursoup. ENJOY!

SPECTACULAR HOMEOPENER PLANNEDAfter opening the LNAH regular season with threeconsecutive games on the road, the River Kings are finallyset to host their home opener on Saturday night.

And a spectacular evening is planned for Cornwall fans.

The River Kings host the defending champion Jonquiere Marquis at the Ed Lumley Arena. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.

There will be plenty of new faces in the lineup for Cornwall, including newly signedtowering defenceman Brett Angel. The 6-foot-6, 248 lb. native of Kingston will add plentyof size and toughness to the Cornwall blueline. The River Kings, after a hectic off-season,will also welcome back core veterans such as Loic Lacasse, Pierre-Luc Faubert, NicolasCorbeil, among many others.

There will also be a special presentation before the game as the River Kings honour localhero Andrew Vink. Last month at training camp, Vink came to the rescue when young fanClayton Cadieux was choking on loonies. After several frantic seconds, Vink was able tosuccessfully perform the Heimlich manoeuver on Clayton, who began breathing onceagain. After a trip to CHEO in Ottawa, Clayton has fully recovered.

Vink and the Cadieux family will be reunited at centre ice on Saturday night to drop theceremonial puck.

Single-game adult tickets are $14, seniors/students are $10 and children under the age of12 are $5. Also, children attending Saturday’s game wearing a Halloween costume willreceive a free ticket to Cornwall’s next home game.

The River Kings (1-0-1) visit Saint-Georges on Friday night.

FAMILIAR FACE JOINS KINGSThe River Kings have added more depth to their blueline. And it’s a familiar face to localhockey fans.

Mathieu Raby has come to terms with the River Kings.

The former Cornwall Comet adds plenty of size and toughness to the Kings defence. Rabylast played with the Akwesasne Warriors of the FHL in 2011-12. He had 94 penaltyminutes in 15 games.

The 38-year-old, who played in the LNAH from 2004-2008, was a draft pick of the TampaBay Lightning in 1993. In 40 games with the St. Jean Chiefs in 2007-08, Raby had 10assists and 194 penalty minutes.

Raby, who turned professional in 1995, brings plenty of experience to Cornwall. He’splayed in many pro leagues, including the AHL and ECHL.

Cornwall hits the road Friday night for a contest in Saint-Georges. The River Kings finallyhave their home opener on Saturday night when the defending champion JonquiereMarquis visit the Civic Complex. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.

Writing and Self DiscoveryI never saw myself as a writer nor did I set out tobecome an author. Pulling my thoughts together in

what has now become a total of five books seemsmore like a happy accident than a specific goal.

Writing really happened when I began to understand that when I wrote thingsdown, I shifted. Journals became a place to ‘dump’ my hurts and vent my anger;a place where emotions which are sometimes difficult to express verbally couldbe placed and not judged by others. Recording my ideas has allowed me toexpand them.

If your brain works at all like mine, ideas appear in rapid succession and unlesswritten down, disappear. As a result I always have a journal with me to simplycapture what is in my head, imbed it on the pages and move on. These are theideas that spawn my work and also feed my own sense of self-discovery.

In her book The Artist’s Way, Julia Cameron writes that “the pages are a pathwayto a strong and clear sense of self”. It was her book that started my writer’sjourney. One of the exercises within the twelve week program outlined withinthe book are something called Morning Pages, which Cameron refers to as theprimary tool for creative recovery.

What are Morning Pages: three pages of handwritten, stream-of-consciousnesswriting. Yes I am aware that most of you now write with a computer and I haveto share that writing longhand is different. Somehow the physical connection

of pen in hand is different than pecking at keys. Stream-of-consciousness means thatonce you begin writing, you do not stop until all three pages are filled. At first it may benonsense, like ‘good morning world, I have no idea what I am writing about this morning, blah, blah…’. That’s okay for at a certain point something switches and your hand startswriting things that seemingly come from out of nowhere and now you are in the ‘juicyzone’.

As I began my own writer’s journey, I kept to the habit of morning pages for over a year.Poems emerged, feelings were exposed, truths realized. I came to know me. Because Icould record anything, free of the judgment of others, I had a sense of freedom rarelyexperienced in my outer world. In this type of writing, grammar doesn’t matter nor doespunctuation. There is no English teacher staring over your shoulder assessing thesethings. You write only for yourself.

Morning pages is only one of many writing tools however.

roadSIGNSby Betty Healey

I no longer keep my ‘pages’, I am more prone to simply record random thoughtsand ideas as they show up in my day. There are no rules in my world althoughserious journal writers would disagree with me.

Writing, if you choose this path, is there to serve you, no one else. Writing forself-discovery is designed to feed your soul, lift your spirit, help you to seeyourself through the lens of your inner world rather than through the eyes ofothers. It is designed for appreciation rather than a place for your self-critic toput you down.

That said, I suggest that if you decide to take up your pen, you begin byrecording everything you know about yourself, your gifts, strengths and values. As you place these attributes on the pages of your journal, you create anamazing foundation for moving forward and directing your personal journey.

Thanksgiving Day I picked up a book at a friend’s place and found the followingpoem by author Dawna Markova, which describes my relationship with writing:

Thinking Ourselves HomeI write to fuse inside with out,

to salve wounds and broken dreams.

I write to understand the many things no one has told me,to stroke my moments clean,

to squeeze them into tiny mirror fragments shining with mind light.

I write to turn my bold to ink, to fertilizer, to sap.

I write so that my yes can feel, so that my heart can lick,so that my soul can crawl from its hiding place and

gaze upon a mystery which can be neither solved nor explained.

I write to breathe my spirit live.

FINAL THOUGHTSI write to breathe my spirit live. Even though you may not seeyourself as a writer, I encourage you to pick up the pen. Do it for YOU, no oneelse. Do it to serve the journey, not to write a book. Do it to find yourself and todiscover who you are today and who you are choosing to become, not to live inthe past. Do it to celebrate yourself.

I invite you to join me at the Cornwall Public Library, Sunday October 27that 2:15 p.m. I will be speaking about writing as a practice for self-discovery aspart of the Writer’s Fest.

That Old Feeling

Last weekend was a greatopportunity to catch upwith friends, as one of mybest friends visited me atmy new place in Kingston. When you get togetherwith the people who have

known you since you were a young teenager,it does mean some reminiscing is going to happenand you discover how much you have changedand what never will.

I saw flashbacks to sleepovers and old chats andcouldn’t help but reflect on all the past dreams, ideas and thoughts of where we would be by thisage. I don’t think any of us thought this is wherewe would be in life, but we give each othersupport, suggestions and best of all a soundingboard.

We visited a local pub with another friend in towand in no time the three of us were in a time travelkind of feel where at times it felt like the 80’s andthen we were back in the present. We sharedstories about our kids, about our current life andwhere we want to be. After some time at the pubwe headed back to my place where we dipped intothe Sangria my sister provided and it was theperfect drink for the kind of evening we wanted. We laughed, at times felt at the brink of tears andit didn’t matter how long it had been since we lastsaw each other, we still have that connection.

My friend Sue did stay for the entire weekend, which did notplease my anti-social cat who kept peeking around the cornerand giving the evil eye, but she did eventually try and comearound though never fully engaged. After checking out themalls on Saturday and a nice brunch, we decided that theweather was questionable so an afternoon of movies was nota bad idea. The Heat was a perfect selection as we laughed atthis female buddy movie.

My friend is one of the best cooks I know and when sheshowed up with muffins and her famous fudge, it was awelcome gift. I did make spaghetti for us on Saturday andalthough I am not the best cook it was good, although betterthe next day.

Overall it was a great weekend, and it was a nice break for herand I enjoyed the company. After a busy week, it was nice totake it down a couple of notches and enjoy some time withone of the people who knows me best. We vowed not to waitso long for another visit and as the tail lights disappeared andthe eventual highway drive was in sight, I was a little homesickand definitely felt that pull. That old feeling gets meeverytime.

Girls' Beauty Products• Group your makeup by categories, for example, makeup, manicure supplies, perfumes, other personal things, etc.

• Items you don't use very often can be stored on a shelf in the closet. If there’s a lack of shelf space and there’s a convenient dresser nearby, store

them in the bottom drawer, or in a less convenient but still accessible space.• Use a hanging shoe rack over the closet door to hold scarves, hair brushes, blow dryer, curling or

straightening irons, and other styling accessories.

DeskUse the same techniques as for the dresser drawers.

Pens, Pencils And Miscellaneous Items• Get rid of all but 10 pens and pencils. Only keep the ones you really like. It doesn't matter that it’s

a good pen if you don't use it.• Put interlocking containers in the drawers to hold pens, paper, glue, note pads, tape, computer

disks, pushpins for a cork board, notes from friends, whatever you need.• If you don't have enough drawers in your desk for everything you need to put away, use

containers on top of the desk. Use magazine holders for school papers or a desk top file sorter. If you can afford it, find a lateral filing cabinet (legal size is best) for filing school papers properly.

BedYour teen should make their bed every morning. It only takes a couple of minutes, and the sight of a made bed is a great source of energy.

School BackpackOnce homework is completed, it should go in the backpack right away, ready for the next day. Thebackpack itself should be hung on the desk chair or put on the desk itself, ready for snatching on theway out the door for school.

Hi there to all of you beautiful people readingthe most informative and positive paper intown, this week. I am so glad to be able to writein this local paper and I am Proud to be anAmbassador for the Seeker and this lovely cityof Cornwall. I have been continuing to enjoythis gorgeous Fall weather. The leaves areleaving us for another year... So you had betterget out to enjoy them while they last.

I have been made Cornwall's Pay It Forward'sFan of the Week, for the fifth time this week. I

am so very Proud and Honored to be so. I truly believe in Paying itForward. Whether you pay for someone's coffee, or meal or just by openinga door or by giving away a friendly smile. Smiles are Free, so Freely givethem away. Make someone else's life a little more happier today, tomorrowor at some time. It not only makes you feel good, it certainly makes thatother person feelSpecial.

Last week I had amost lovely and funtime shopping withJohn for some newFall items at ValueVillage. I foundmyself a "treasure"that I had alwayswanted. It is a black, woolen, cape-like,poncho, coat thingythat is trimmed withfaux-leopard fur. It isfabulously warm, stylish and looks sofine. I do have some

matching leopard- print itemsto go along with my newpurchase of course. A couple of hats, a purse, some boots, a scarf and even some earrings and a bracelet. All accessories arefun to have for any kind of outfit you are planning to wear. Exercise??? Ithought you said Accessorize. Hehehe :D

Tip of the Week: Matching is a good thing!!! When you are wearing all black orbrown, add a animal print by matching it up with a scarf, hat or a pair of bootsor gloves. Or you can add a bold red or orange item, as these colours go wellwith black and or brown. When you are going to be wearing any "monotonecolours" be sure to add a Splash of colour to your outfit. It just makes life a littlebit more FUN and Colourful!!! That's what we all want?..Right??? :D

Life is only travelled once...Today's Moments becomes Tomorrow's Memories.Enjoy every moment, GOOD or BAD because the Gift of Life is Life Itself!!!

Please Pay it Forward.Marlene Baker of www.fashionography.ca

Focus Art is havingits MONTHLYMEETINGNovember 6 - 7pm.Centre Charles-ÉmileClaude 146 Chévrier. For more info call613-931-1194.

Members will have the choice to join one of two activities.

Photography: Focus and Depth of FieldHow does focus affect the mood or 'purpose' of the picture? Canchanging which part of the picture is in focus change the mood orfeeling of the picture? Come and learn about depth of field and focus.Bring your camera; after a very short talk, (15-20 minutes) we'll try tospend an hour putting these notions into practice. DON'T FORGET YOUROWNER’S MANUAL - every camera is different. Don Mitchell will lead thisactivity.

Exploring Oils PastelsDefinition: Oil pastel (also called wax oil crayon) is a painting anddrawing medium with characteristics similar to pastels and wax crayons.Unlike "soft" or "French" pastel sticks, which are made with a gum ormethylcellulose binder, oil pastels consist of pigment mixed with a non-drying oil and wax binder. The surface of an oil pastel painting istherefore less powdery; blending can be challenging, results amazing…

Carol Jeghers, winner at our Juried Show, will demonstrate techniquesand coach the group through the exploration of this medium. Somematerial will be available for your use. If members have oil pastels you areencouraged to bring them. No experience needed but you will create.Dress for play.

Artist of the Month: Hope you saw Barbara Darling, the first Artistof the Month in the Seeker; great presentation.

On November 6, the Gals from the Local Seeker will draw the name ofour next Artist of the Month amongst members present at the monthlymeeting. Be part of the action.
