boIs of two of the oldest institutions inthe world, have enjoyed a love andrespect unparalleled through the .ages,not only in the Commonwealth anc;iEmpire; but throughout the world.

Because of their common dedicationto the' service of the people and of theirhistoric parallel development, the mon­archy and the navy have been closelyassociated for a thousand years, eachplaying its part in the slow but steadyevolution of that unique and highly re­spected organization of human societyof today, the British Commonwealth ofNations..

A thousand years is a long time; kingsand queens have come and gone as havecountless ships and sailormen. Yeteach has left his mark and it is of inter­est to note that, almost invariably, themonarch who knew the meaning of thesea, who grasped the opportunity thesea has always presented, who justlyexercised the privilege of sea-power,has contributed most to the welfare ofhis people.

SEVERAL of Britain's kings havebeen called "fathers" of the Royal

Navy. The earliest of these was Alfredthe Great who reigned in the ninth cen'­tury. Great amongst rulers in the Waysof learning and good government,Alfred was perhaps the first sovereignto realize that the besf way to protecthis island people from the invader was,not to let the enemy choose the landingplace, but to engage him at sea with anEnglish fleet manned by stout-heartedEnglish seamen. Successful Britishrulers have followed this pattern eversince. When, nearly two centuries later,the Saxon Harold failed to commandthe English Channel, the only truly suc­cessful invader of England, William theNorman, landed and took over thecountry; profoundly changing thecourse of history.

In medieval England the maintenanceof a fleet, a personal responsibility ofthe king, was, as it still is, a rather ex­pensive proposition. This problem wassolved to some extent· by grantingspecial privileges to the Cinque Portson the south-east coast of England­Sandwich, Dover, Hythe, Romney, andHastings. In return, and in keeping withfeudal system of the times, these portsin time of emergency provided thecountry's naval forces. In this way,King William cleared the Channel ofpirates and' encouraged English trade.

At her coming coronation,Her Majesty the Queen will solemnlyswear to serve her people; the fleet, asalways, stands ready to execute the willof Her Majesty's Government as direc­ted by Parliament, the body of thepeople's representatives. Because ofthis noble quality of service, the RoyalStandard and the White Ensign, sym-

A standard is a flag which depicts the armorial bearings of theperson entitled to 'wear it. The Sovereign and certain members ofthe Royal Family have personal standards, which are ;flown to denotetheir actual presence in any ship or place, whether in residence oron a visit.

. Whenever the Sovereign shall go on board any ship of war, theRoyal Standard shaH be hoisted at the main, the flag of the LordHigh Admiral at the fore, and the Union Flag at the mizzen of suchship; or if on board a vessel with less than three masts, they shaH.be hoisted in the most conspicuous parts of her.

the Royal CanadiaI:\ Navy when, inNovember 1951, His Majesty's Cana­

dian Ship Ontario had the rarehonour of embarking Their Royal High­nesses, the Princess Elizabeth and theDuke of Edinburgh for passage fromCharlottetown to Sydney and St. John's.As befitted the occasion, the Princess'Standard was hoisted at the main, whilethe White Ensign, designating a ship ofHis Majesty's Naval Forces, was wornat the foremast.

In King Richard the First's charter add­ing Winchelsea and Rye to this import­ant source of naval strength, he guaran­teed that "the men of Winchelsea andRye are to be free and quit on both'sides of the sea (the Channel) and notto be disturbed."

This was the same Richard known asCreur de Lion or Lion-Hearted who ledthe English knights on the Third Cru­sade (1190-1192) in an effort to rescueJerusalem from the Turks. He mana­ged to equip a fleet and sail it to theEastern Mediterranean where he gaineda victory over the sea forces of Islam.It was during this campaign thatRichard chose St. George, an earlyChristian soldier martyred in the year303 AD., as his patron saint. TheCross of St. George, a Greek cross ofred on a white field was the badge wornby his soldiers. His shipsalso carried this device as abanner which from that timewas adopted as the nationalflag for the fleet. This then,was the origin of the St.George's Cross in the WhiteEnsign and the Union Flag.

The Royal Standard oftoday also dates from Rich­ard's time. In the first andfourth cantons are found thethree golden lions on a redfield representing England.This heraldic device wasfrom the arms of RichardCreur de Lion and is incor­porated in the armorial bear­ings of Canada today.

THE first English monarchto implement a positive

maritime policy was the firstof the Tudors, Henry theSeventh. Henry, who ruledat the time of Columbus,was an opportunist of thefirst order and, first andforemost, a merchant. Be­tween the reigns of Richardand Henry, the islandershad seemed content to letwhat little foreign tradethey had, be carried in for­eign bottoms. Henry madevaliant efforts to change allthis and his partial successwas to pay handsome dividends a cent­ury later. He built fine ships of hisown, used them for trading expeditionsand even hired them out to his subjects.More than that, he paid a bounty onheavy tonnage ships built and ownedby his countrymen. This was an at­tempt to encourage foreign trade and,shrewdly enough to provide a supply offighting ships in the event of war, therebeing little difference between merchant

ships and naval vessels of those times.It was Henry who sponsored the voyageof John Cabot to Newfoundland in 1497.Even at that, England was late arrivingon the scene so far as discovery and ex­ploration were concerned, for Spainand Portugal were already sending theirgalleons far from Europe in search ofnew wealth.

In this respect, Henry's son, thenotorious Henry the Eighth, made littleprogress. But the energetic youngHenry had one valid claim to being the"Father of the Royal Navy", for hebuilt the first English fighting fleet thatlasted. These ships were the King'sShip's, his own personal property. FromHenry the Eighth on, there is always acertain permanence about England'sfighting power at sea. His ships were

large and though they had not yetachieved the trim lines of the 18th cen­tury vessels, still they had lost much ofthe roundness typical in the medievalperiod. He welcomed and epcouragednew ideas with respect to rigging, hullstructure and armament. Within aspace of five years he added twenty-fourships to the royal fleet some of whichsurvived well into the reign of Eliza­beth. In armament, Henry's ships

differed greatly from those of his con­temporaries. While his father's shipshad carried companies of archers and,gunners whose only weapon was thelight man-killing serpentines, many ofHenry's new ships were armed withguns weighing up to a ton and a halfeach. These great guns had of neces­sity to be mounted low in the ship topreserve stability. This problem wassolved by cutting the well known squaregun-ports in the sides of the hull. Inone stride, Henry the Eighth had takenthe lead in the production of offensivenaval ordnance, and though he madelittle use of his fleet either to find newtrade outlets or to invade the rich trad­ing grounds of his rivals, he had builta permanent fleet of excellent ships andprepared the way for the Elizabethansea-dogs.

SOME ELEVEN years afterthe death of her much­

married father, the youthfulQueen Elizabeth the l!~irst

mounted the throne of Eng­land in the year 1558. Itwas a troubled land. Thefact that her mother AnneBoleyn had been beheadedby the order of Elizabeth'sown father, made the youngqueen's claim to the thronea shaky one. After years ofreligious persecution, manyEnglishmen lived in an at­mosphere of fear and poison­ous intrigue. The rich royalcoffers of her grandfather,Henry the Seventh, hadbeen drained so that Eliza­beth' succeeded to a legacyof debt and inflated cur­rency. There was no army.Even her father's fleet haddwindled to twenty-'Oneships, these in a run-downcondition and indifferentlymanned. To the youngqueen and to her subjects itwas not exactly a reassuringprospect. Yet, from the out­set, Queen Elizabeth theFirst took firm hold of thehelm of state and not oncein her forty-five year reigndid she relinquish her com­

mand to anyone. Aided by outstandingministen' and her own far-sightedjudgment, she was destined to rule inan era which rightfully earned its titleas England's Golden Age.

It was during this era that theEnglish people fully emerged from amedieval society into a first-rate mod­ern power. In this transitional period,directed by Elizabeth and her wise andfar-seeing statesmen, England's seamen

contributed more than any othernational group to the country's newposition of greatness among the nationsof Europe. In the post-Renaissance era;Englishmen recpgnized the folly ofwasting their strength in endless con­tinental wars and learned that the seawas not only England's first line ofdefence but also a great highway ofopportunity. Upheld' by national as­pirations and the queen's encourage­ment; the seamen of the island king­dom came to believe that all the oceanswere free and so they sailed and foughton every sea to defend their right toseek out new lands and to, trade ondistant shores.

Elizabethan mariners carried St.George's Cross to the far corners of theearth. Trade was opened with NorthRussia and the lands border­ing the Mediterranean. Menlike Frobisher and Davisweathered the Arctic wastesnorth of Canada endeavour­ing 'to get through to thefabulous riches of the East.Others like Oxenham, Hawk­ins, and Drake successfullychallenged the arbitrarydivision of the New Worldbetween Spain and Portugal.

Broadly speaking, Eliza­beth's foreign policy was oneof peace, but a sufficientlymilitant one that graduallyafforded England a place inthe sun. When the Spanishambassador would protestthe plundering of Spanish

. treasureships by her "sea­dogs~', she would bare-faced­ly denounce and disownthem one day and knightthem the next. She wouldagree with her minister,Burleigh, that the Spanishking must be placated, and,at the same' time hold finan­cial shares -in the piratical~nterprises of .Tohn Hawkinsand Francis Drake.

UNDOUBTEDLY, Eliza­beth~s greatest contribu­

tion to the future fleets of theBritish Commonwealth wasthe navy's fighting tradition-that boldspirit of seeking out the enemy in timeof war and giving battle oIi everypossible occasion. Schooled to this phil­osophy for thirty years prior to thecoming of the great Spanish Armada,Elizabeth's seamen were able to con­centrate a mighty fleet of royal ,andprivate ships manned by companies ofskilled sea-fighters that, with the aid offavourable winds, shattered the proudfleet of'Spain. When the queen died in

1603, she left behind her an Englandfortified by a sturdy naval traditionwhich was to serve the country in goodstead in the centuries to come.

The Royal Standard of Elizabeth'stime still held Richard's three goldenlions, but they were in the second andthird cantons, the first and fourthhaving, since Edward the Third, carriedthe lilies representing the ancient claimto the throne of France. When KingJames the Sixth of Scotland succeededElizabeth, he became known as KingJames the First of England. With theunion of the crowns, James added tothe Royal Standard the Scottish redlion rampant and the harp of Ireland­this even though the political unionwith Scotland was to be delayedanother century and that with Ireland

for still another century. The King'sShips continued to be identified by theflag bearing St. George's Cross.

Under both James and his son, whoruled as Charles the First, there camea series of set-backs to both maritimeand naval England. An idealist, Jameshated war. To appease Spain, hebeheaded one of the last of the Eliza­bethans, Sir Walter Raleigh-one ofthe many prices England paid for peacewith her adversaries. Moreever, James

refused to issue letters of Marque, theancient European system that permittedarmed merchantmen to conduct "pri­vate war" within the letter of the law.So it was that in the early seventeenthcentury, English shipping was sweptfrom the sea; trade came to a standstill;bold Algerian pirates raided the shoresof the British Isles carrying Britishsubjects off to slavery in North Africa;pirates infested the English Channel;and the Royal Ships~some of them thevery ships that had shattered the Invin­cible Armada - lay rotting in, theMedway.

King Charles the First, who later losthis head by the axe before Whitehall,succeeded his father in 1625. His in­fluence on the fleet was little better thanJames', but, at least, he saw danger

in Britain's maritime plight.He called for a completesurvey of the King's Shipsand the dockyards. Theresult was most depressing;the fleet was in a deplorablestate and the seamen wereclamouring for long-overduepay. Energetically, he plan­ned the refitting of his shipsand the building of frigatesto cope with the pirates andthe privateers of France andSpain that had for yearsthrottled English shippingand trade. But he wassimply not the man to carryout the task. His troublewas financial and constitu­tional.

IN ACTUAL FACT, Charlescame up with a very good

plan - "Ship Money". Inplace of the old system ofrequiring the service ofarmed merchant ships, nowno longer capable of chal­lenging ships of the line, theking proposed that the porttowns and inland towns alikeshould provide cash for thedefence of the nation's trade.A most reasonable solutionit would seem. But here,Charles ran headlong into apowerful and stubborn op­

position - the growing antagonism ofParliament, particularly the Puritanmembers, and their resistance to be­ing taxed without parliamentary con­sent and control of the purse. Ofcourse, these views were not acceptableto a monarch who had been steeped inthe traditional "royal prerogative" andthe "divine right of kings".

However, in the earlier stages of hisreign, before parliament had grown toostrong, Charles did manage to collect

some "Ship Money" and he did buildthe finest line-of-battle ship of the day,"Sovereign of the Seas".

It was during this reign that the firstred, white and blue ensigns appeared.The fleet was divided into three squad­rons, the centre wearing the red ensign,the van the blue, and the rear the white,each flag having the St. George's Crossin the quarter known as the hoist.Gradually the Union Jack in the cornerof the ensign came into use for thedifferent squadrons, a practice con­tinued until 1864 at which time theWhite Ensign became the sale distin­guishing ensign of the Royal Navy.

However, more than ensigns was re­quired to regain England's lost prestigeat sea. Parliament was adamant. Themany impasses culminated in civil warand defeat for Charles. Thegovernment solved the prob­lem by taking the king's lifein 1649.

During the eleven-yearCommonwealth or Interre­gnum under Cromwell,English maritime enterpriserose to heights comparablewith those of Elizabeth'sday. The pirates were sweptfrom the shores of theislands and English tradeflourished in spite of thestout attacks of the Dutch.Men like Robert Blake madethe fleet strong and highlyrespected on the high seas.Some of the finest battletraditions 'of the fleet datefrom the days of the Com­monwealth.

THE Commonwealth hadbrought many changes to

English life, some of themof an enduring character.Parliament as the legislatingbody of government wassolidly entrenched. The CivilWar had produced the spec­tacle of Cromwell's "StateShips" engaged in battlewith Prince Rupert's "King'sShips" and the latter hadbeen soundly defeated. Whenthe Merry Monarch, KingCharles the Second, ascended the re­stored throne in 1660, England had afirst-rate fleet of 207 ships-all "StateShips". Yet, strange as it may seem, thisstate-owned fleet became the first trulyroyal navy. The fact was that economicand political changes had been so sweep­ing that it was no longer feasible to ex­pect that a few King's Ships, bolsteredby hastily mobilized merchantmen,could adequately perform the paramountfunction of the fleet-the protection of

trade. Charles the Second was wiseenovgh to recognize this change andreadily agreed that the navy must becontrolled, manned and paid by Parlia­ment in the name of the sovereign. Inso doing, he laid down the pattern forthe true future relationship of thecrown, the nation, and the fleet. Ironic":l:\lly enough, it was Charles the Secondwho decreed that the fleet was to behenceforth officially termed the "RoyalNavy". Undoubtedly he did this so asnot to make too apparent his non-own­ership of the fleet, but then perhaps inhis own shrewd way, he foresaw thatthe sovereign would become the titularhead of the state.

Just as Elizabeth's time has beencalled the Age of Mercantilism, that ofthe seventeenth century was one of

colonization and the eighteenth, theAge of Empire. Throughout this broadstretch of time, Britain's fleet carriedout heroic and arduous tasks all ofwhich were prerequisite to the develop­ment of the family of nations which isthe British Commonwealth today. InBritain "itself, parliamentary govern­ment gradually became representativeof a wider and wider electorate and theconcept of monarchy changed graduallyfrom the idea that the sovereign was a

manipulator of politicians to one inwhich he rose to a position above partystrife and intrigue. In the centuriesthat followed the Stuart monarchs, thesovereign had less and less to do withthe direct control of the Royal' Navy.Yet because of the monarch's position ofimpartiality, his influence was mostbeneficial in that there developed a newsense of loyalty to the throne. Thiswas a very strong factor in producingoutstandig seamen-leaders like Ver­non, St. Vincent, and Nelson, whocontributed so much to the freedomof Britons and of humanity at large.

THE GREAT Queen Victoria admirablypersonified this enhanced dignity of

Britain's sovereigns. Early in her reignshe encouraged her ministers to employ

the ships of the Royal Navyin the suppression of piracyand of what she called the"iniquitous traffic in slaves".She reminded her ministersin 1854 that she expectedthem "to keep perfect faithwith her sailors". In' thesame letter, she recom­mended the formation of theRoyal Naval Reserve, point­ing out that the commissioncharged with this responsi­bility should be "composedchiefly of younger officersstill conversant with thepresent feelings of our sail­ors, being better able toadvise on the subject; tileold Admirals are always andnot unnaturally somewhatbehind their time." When5,000 more troops were beingsent to the Crimea, thequeen felt rather uneasyabout the lack of troops athome and so wrote to theDuke of Newcastle - "theQueen wishes to have the'effective state' (of the homedefences) and not the 'stateupon paper only' ".

ttnlike the rather perfunc­tory association of manyforeign princes with theirrespective armed forces, theheirs of Queen Victoria have

been carefully schooled for their futureposition of trust and honour. Fromearly in youth, King George the Fifthand his sons, Edward the Eighth andGeorge the Sixth served in the RoyalNavy. Perhaps this was one reason thatthese monarchs were so beloved. Theybrought the throne close to the peopleof the Commonwealth and Empire.

his junior chefs in the galley and car­ried out an eagle-eyed inspection ofhands and whites for cleanliness. Hehad the writers produce a fancy bill offare, printed in French "for sailors"with an English translati-on on the side"for peasants". The bill of fare featuredsoup, "Bamf. au Buffer", vegetables andpie.

In spite of the raucous jeers of alarge crowd of hecklers, the "cooks" goton with the job and produced withouttoo much fumbling. The staff includedtwo quartermasters, PO William Armit

. and AB John Grodde, two radar con­trol men, AB Kenneth White and ABGeorge Spicer and an AA gunner, ABWilliam Ross. To the First Lieutenant,Lt.-Cdr., John Husher, fell the igno­minious task of scullery hand.

Over the SRE came the pipe "Pots tothe Galley". or "Pots is required in thecaptain's cabin". With amateurs doingthe job, No.1 claimed that there weretwice the usual number of pots andpans to be cleaned and threatened toresign. However, Chief Gold, with astrong Gallic hand, made sure he stayedon the job.

On the upper deck at the same time,'another amused crowd of onlookersshouted unsought advice at CPO GordonDark and his cooks struggling with anunruly 'oil fuel hose. It was cold ondeck that day and the job wasn't toopleasant. His force included Ldg. Sea.Robert Brigden, Ldg. Sea. GlenMcPherson, and Able Seamen WilliamCairns and Douglas Purdy, all cooks.

They did the job efficiently and didn'tspill any more than the usual amouI).t ofoil when the stokers took over theactual pumping operation.

When it was over, both sides agreedthat there was a lot to be said for theirown particular jobs and they wouldn'tcare to exchange places on a 'long termbasis. The buffer and his "chefs"claimed that their mashed potatoeswere so good that they shamed thecooks into producing lumpless mashedpotatoes from then on.' The cooks, onthe other hand, claimed that never hadthe fuel hose been connected' up soquickly or smoothly.-J. L. W.

In HMCS Crusader, the supplybranch and the seamen understand eachother. The good-natured nattering thatg9E!S on between the two branches hasbeen successfully squelched.

At one point there had been a fewhot words exchanged to the effect that(from the seamen) "You couldn't cook'a pot of water without burning it," or(from the.cooks) "What do youguys doon this packet anyway, besides sun­bathe on the upper?" and so it went.

Somebody came up with the idea ofchanging places for a day. A group ofseamen, under the direction of theBuffer, would cook the noon meal andthe Chief Cook would lead some of hismen in hooking up to the tanker whenthe ship next had to fuel.

Coronation ShipsAwait Big Day

The three most powerful ships of theRCN and one of its sleek destroyerssailed from Halifax May 7; four beauti­fully turned out ships heading forEngland to do honour to the youngQueen. The two training frigates HMCShips Swansea and La Hulloise joinedthe squadron at Portsmouth later inMay.

It was the first time since before theSecond World War that so much timeand energy had gone into ships for thesole purpose of beautifying them. TheRCN is and has been working prodi­giously to fulfill its training commit­ments, its responsibility to NATO andthe United Nations. Five destroyershave been tied up for nearly three yearsin a shooting war.

But for the Coronation, the mostlavish pageant the world has seen sincethe crowning of His Majesty KingGeorge VI, it was fitting that "spit andpolish", for a brief time, take prece­dence.

Eight days after sailing from Halifax,the ships arrived at Spithead.

Before the big ships left base, officersand men of the squadron ships and theentire RCN contingent took part in a,preview parade through the streets ofHalifax May 5. Four naval bands and acolour party gave enthusiastic Haligo­nians a small-scale foretaste of Corona­tion Day in London.

For the first part of the crossing,heavy weather and fog dogged theirtracks. In spite of the elements, how­ever, a broad program of fleet and fly­ing exercises was worked in withRCAF, RAF and RN aircraft joining"battle" with the squadron and theplanes of the Maggie's 30 CAG.

The frigates sailed May 18. Two daysout; Swansea detached for a high speedrun to St. John's, Nfld. to land a manwith suspected acute appendicitis.

Although the prime purpose of thesquadron's trip to the United Kingdomis a ceremonial one, the opportunitiesfor fleet training were fully exploited.

The cruisers and the carrier joined shipsof the RN in exercises for almost twoweeks before returning to Portsmouthwhere they were based from May 27until June 8 when they are scheduledto move to Spithead.

The Sioux spent the time from theend of May until June 4 at Greenwichand the two frigate;; were berthed atDeptford on the Thames. On June 5all three moved to Spithead in prepara­tion for the Review.

For the squadron, the highlight of thegreat ritual lay ahead when the newly­crowned Queen would review hernavies and ships of foreign navies inthe greatest array of naval might sinceher father's coronation. There wasmuch yet to be done, the Canadiansquadron had to make sure their shipswere as smart and efficient as any inthe review.

Destroyers EarnRest at Hong Kong

Last month in the Far East the Atha­baskan and Haida got a break from thewar with a week-long "Rest and Re­laxation" trip to Hong Kong. TheCrusader spent most of May at sea onpatrol, having had her trip to HongKong in January.

On Sunday, May 17, 300 members ofthe two ships' companies assembled atthe Saiwan Military Cemetery to payhomage to those Canadians who losttheir lives in defence of the colony dur­ing the Second World War. About 30Canadian residents of Hong Kong alsoattended the ceremony, which was con­ducted by Chaplain (P) A. G. FaradayRCN.

The Royal Marine band from thecruiser HMS Newcastle provided themusic and the two ships paraded a 50­man guard under Lieut. H. W. Plant ofthe Haida and SUb.-Lieut. Keith Youngof the Athbaskan. Captain J. C. Reedlaid wreaths on behalf of the people ofCanada and the two ship's companies.

Earlier in the month the Athabaskancovered a smash-grab raid conducted bySouth Korean Forces against the enemymainland to collect information andcapture prisoners. The afternoon afterthe night incursion had been made, tiLeAthabee got an emergency call for help.The ROKs were withdrawing, with aNorth Korean army major and asergeant in tow, but they were in gravedanger of being wiped out on the beachbefore they could get off.

The ship rushed to the scene andpoured in four-inch bricks whichsmashed up the enemy mortar positionsand discouraged the troops from getting,too near the beach. This took the pres­sUre off and the ROKs made it safely tothe friendly island of Chodo.

Meanwhile, aircraft from the USNcarrier Bataan had arrived and weredirected onto the enemy troop positions.The planes succeeded in putting the

'communists out 'qf the fight and thedestroyer got two gun positions. As shesteamed seaward after the fight, theAthabaskan almost got her war bonnetsinged, Two enemy guns opened fireon the ship but she was drawing wellout of range and they fell short.

The aftermath of the battle was en­acted in the Captain's day cabin. , Twobadly wounded ROKs had been brought

, from the island and received emergencymedical treatment from, Surg.-Lt. RossIrwin. Next day the two men wereflown out to a South Korean hospital forfurther treatment.

The Crusader meanwhile, had fin­ished an eventful and varied east coastpatrol. With another train kill to hercredit and two more badly shot up, sheassumed the chairmanship of the TrainBuster's Club. Membership of this ex­clusive group is right now only 13. SixUS N;:tvy destroyers, a destroyer mine­.sweeper and two 'destroyer escorts; aDutch destroy.er, a British destroyer andthe Haida are the present charter mem­bers under the Crusader.'s presidency.

On the same patrol she <tid a four­day stint in the Sea of Japan as part ofTask Force 77's screen., When she de­tached to go back on the inshore .patrol,Vice-Admil'al Hickey, Commander ofthe Task Force, sent a message praising .highly her efficiency.

Gate VesselsFor Lake Duties

Two new gate vessels, HMC Ships'Porte Saint Louis and Porte Saint Jean,have beeh allocated to the training ofreserves in the Great Lakes during thesUmmer training period.

The normal complement of each shipis three officers and 20 men and thereis additional accommodation for thetraining of about 15 new entry reservesat a time. ,

The gate vessels bring to ten thenumber of RCN ships on the lakes dur­ing the summer. These include sixFairmiles and the two Bangors, HMCShips Digby and Granby.

Stadacona BandEntertains Ottawa

A weekend visit to Ottawa byHMCS Stadacona band proved to be abusy assignment for the 24-man aggi:e­gation led by Lieut. (SB) S. E. F.Sunderland. There was little time outfor sightseeing in Canada's Capital.

The period, Ma'y 8 to 10, saw the bandperform in three engagements. Fridayevening, the musical sailors were at

HMCS Carleton to lead off a naval mess'dinner with the traditional "Roast Beefof Old Engllmd". During the eveningthe band proviqed a musical back­ground of light and semi-classicalselections.

The following night the Stadaconaband took to the stage at the GlebeCollegiate Institute Auditorium inOttawa to present a concert for Ottawa'school students. The program, whichincluded the showing of two navy films,"Fighting Navy", and "Wings for TheNavy", saw the band swinging througha wide repertoire ranging from navalmarches to hot jazz.

The "Stad" bandsmen played theirflnal Ottawa eng~gement Sunday after­noon, May 10 when they held an openair concert on the steps of the SupremeCourt Building. Bright, hot sunshineprovided an ideal setting, and thousandsof Ottawans relaxed on the grass infront of the building listening to a well­balanced program - enjoyed despitesome'slight competition from street-carsand trucks.

CNS PresentsColour to Cadets

A highlight of the annual inspection ofthe Royal Canadian Sea Cadet CorpsFalkland in Ottawa on May 20· wasthe presentation of a colour to the corpsby Vice-Admiral E. R. Mainguy, OBE,CD, RCN, Chief of the Naval Staff.

The 104 officers and cadets were in­spected on the p<lrade square at- HMCSCarleton, the naval division at Dow'sLake, where theY have their head­quarters. Senior naval officers fromnaval headquarters and prominent NavyLeague of Canada officials were amongthe several hundred spectators.

The colour-be:;lrer was Cadet PettyOfficer David Rayner, a son of Commo­dore H. S. Rayner, commanding officer,HMCS Magnificent. It is the first timethe corps has p(')ssessed a colour andCadet PO Rayner "showed" it in tradi­tional fashion.

The West Coast Group will makethree month-long training cruises, eachbeginning and ending with trainingexercises in Bedwell Harbour. BesidesLong Beach, the Group will call at SanDiego, Vancouver and Astoria.

There will be 517 cadets training onthe East Coast and 372 with the WestCoast Group.

Last Tribute PaidTo Wooden Warship

A final tribute to one of the last ofthe wooden ships, the Royal Navy'sformer HMS Pelican, was paid by theRoyal Canadian Navy recently whenshe was towed to her final resting placeat sea escorted by the minesweeper­gate vessel HMCS Porte Dauphine.

The Porte Dauphine escorted the gal­lant old vessel, 'whose career coveredeverything from sub-chasing to tradingin the northern ice fields, to her finalresting place at sea.

The Pelican was built in 1877 as an,armed cargo carrier and training vesselfor the Royal Navy. She was creditedwith sinking a German submarine aftera running surface battle in 1917 whiletaking munitions to Murmansk, Russia.

From 1901 to 1914 she was used bythe Hudson's Bay Company in Canadiannorthern waters. The Pelican was sunk;some 30 years ago when curious chil~

dren opened her sea-cocks in SydneyHarbour.

Ship Hesitates;River too Cold?

HMCS Ottawa balked on the slips atCanadian Vickers in Montreal but at lastslid gracefully into the St. LawrenceRiver April 29 to become the fourth tobe launched in a series of 14 Canadiandesigned anti-submarine escorts build­ing in Canadian shipyards.

For half-an-hour the hull with thesmooth, flowing lines clung to the slip.ways. Insufficient slope, light weight, aslight obstruction and cold grease weresome of the reasons offered for her reo.fusal to budge after Mrs. H. G. DeWolf,wife of Rear-Admiral DeWolf, chairmanof the Canadian Joint Staff in Washing­ton, had christened her with the tradi­tional bottle of champagne.

Rear-Admiral Hugh F. Pullen, chiefof naval personnel and a commandingofficer of the two previous Ottawas,

came up with the cheering thought that"She was a slow starter, but that onlymeans she will be a strong finisher."

HMCS St. Laurent, the first of the newescorts, was launched at Canadian Vick­ers in Montreal on November 30, 1951,followed by the Skeena last year atBurrard Dry Docking Company in NorthVancouver and by the Fraser this Feb­ruary from the same shipyard. The firstis expected to be ready for the fleetsometime next year. .

Names of the new DEs follow thoseof Canadian destroyers which servedduring the Second World War and are

no longer in service. The Ottawa is thethird Canadian vessel to bear the name.The first Ottawa, one of the six destroy­ers of the RCN at the outbreak of theSecond World War, was torpedoed andsunk by a German U-boat in the NorthAtlantic in September, 1942 with theloss of five officers and 109 men. Thesecond Ottawa was commissioned in theRCN on March 20, 1943. FormerlyHMS Griffin, she was transferred to theRCN to replace the loss of her name­sake, served well in the battle of theAtlantic, and was declared surplus atthe war's end.

Why a

LAS'!' September the American Mer­chant Marine Institute sent a news­

letter to newspapers, many of them inmid-Western towns, asking why a shipis called "she".

The returns have. flowed back to theinstitute offices at 11 Broadway, fromBrooklyn and Venezuela,. from: steam­ship oilers with fire in their eyes, fromsteamship brokers with mist in theireyes. ' Caustic, or sincere, here are 'someof the replies:

Because a 'ship has a waist, bonnets,laces, .stays, combings, jewels and ear­,rings.

It was also noted that there is "agreat deal of bustle" around a ship andthat in port she' has an agent handlingher business called a "husband".

A captain wrote: "On to large vesselsthe word 'she' was attached because ofthe sails. The sail repre~ented the ves­sel as dressed like a woman".

America, submitted: "In older times;when sea voyages could' take manyyears, the ship was the woman ... Theseaman . . . saw her as his home, hefound in· her his protection and .therepresentation of female warmth, and'love, such. as given by a mother' orwife".

From Surabaja, Indonesia, came thisreply: "A merchant ship is called 'she'because, coming into port, the first thing'she' does is go to the.buoys! I hopethis solves y~tlr problem".

One respondent leaned on Shakes­peare, where in Act III, Scene 3, of"The Winter's Taie" a clown obs.erves:"now the ship boring the. moon, with'her mainmast", and on the Bible, wherein the description of' Paul's journeys inActs XXI, part of the third verse reads:

New Setup lorSu,pply Branch

Familiar faces are accompanied byunfamiliar titles as a result of the recentcomprehensive reorganization of thesupply directorates at Naval Headquar­ters.

The new organization is headed bythe Supply Officer-in-Chief (SOC) re­placing the Director General of Supplyand Fleet Accounting (DGSFA). Com­modore (S) R. A. Wright, remains inthis appointment.

The Deputy Supply Officer-in-Chief(DSOC) replaces the Deputy DirectorGeneral of Supply and Fleet Accounting(DDGSFA). This appointment hasbeen filled by Commander (S) T. F. T.Morland, formerly Director of NavalPay Accounting. He retains the actingrank of Captain (S) while holding thisappointment.

Under DSOC are, two semi-independ­ent units. One, controlling the opera­tions of the supply branch is the Inspec­tor of Supply and Fleet· Accounting(ISFA), the other looking to futureoperations is the Assistant Supply 'Offi­cer-in-Chief (Plans). Lieut. (,S) G. R.Monckton, formerly Assistant Staff Offi­cer liaison with the Department ofDefence Production fills the first ap­pointment: Lieut.-Cdr. (S) A. D. Collins,formerly Deputy Officer-ih-Charge,Naval Supply Depot, Esquimait, is nowASOC (Plans).

Star Auxiliary CompletesTen Years of Service

Ten yiears of service to the ship'scompany of HMCS star is the recordof the hard-wol'1ting group of womencomprising the Ladies' Amdliar·y to theHamilton naval division.

The auxiliary was formed in January1943 and promptly set to work In theinterests of mernobers of the divisionand their families.

Each year the ladies hold a summerpicnic and a Chrimmas party for thechildren. In addition, they send par­oels to Korea and give each new entrydrafted from Star a box of comforts.

Typical of the women who have putyears of effort into working on behalfof the division Is Miss M. Leslie, whois in charge of the auxiliary's welfarework. She visits sailors in the sana­torium and helps the men or theirfamilies in timeS' of difficulty. Shecan be Seen at Star each Saturdayevening making sure that new entries·receive their going-away gift parcels.

Miss Leslie finds time, as well, tocarryon a lively ·correspondence withmen. serving in HMC Ships in theKorean war theatre.

Two-War VeteranCdr. G. W. Kidd Dies

Commander (E) George Watson Kidd,RCN (Ret'd), 69, of Vancouver andVictoria, who served with the RoyalNavy during the First World War inHMS Warspite and HMS Courageous,died April 23 in Vancouver. Betweenthe wars he was co-owner of an en­gineering firm in Colombia, SouthAmerica.

During the Second World War hejoined the RCN as Commander (E), re­tiring with that rank in 1945. Heserved at Headquarters and in Esqui­malt.

Commander Kidd leaves his wife,three sons, including Lieut.-Cdr. Wil­liam M. Kidd, RCN, a daughter, threegrandchildren and three sisters.

In most parts of Canada a "Marine"is a "seafaring-soldier", but in thelanguage of Quebec the "Marine" ispure Navy.

However, the naval reserve forces ofHMCS Montcalm, the Quebec City navaldivision, really switched this meaningon the week-end of March 28 and 29 bybecoming soldiering-sailors.

The occasion was a joint ReserveNavy-Army Battle under the code nameof "Exercise Plasma" when approxi­mately 400 officers and men of Quebec'sReserve Naval and Army Units com­bined forces and went "into battle".Director of the exercise was reserveLt.-Col. M. F. HHlary, CommandingOfficer of the First Technical Regiment,who was assisted by Commander W.Mylett, Commanding Officer of HMCSMontcalm.

The purpose of the exercise was togive the auxiliary service an opportun­ity to experience working under condi­tions that were as close to real warfareas possible, and the general consensus

of opinion was that this was one of themost realistic "mock battles" in whichthey had ever been engaged.

The .contribution of HMCS Montcalmwas 100 officers, cadets and men, whilethe Reserve Army Units of Quebecmade up the rest of the force with in­fantrymen, engineers, signallers, Ser­vice, Medical, and Provost Corpsmenand COTC.

The exercise began Saturday after­noon. The troops were transported toValcartier Military Camp, about 20miles from Quebec City and adjacentto the Valcartier Ranges where the "bat­tle" took place.

On Sunday morning an early churchparade was held; then followed an in­tensive briefing of the day's operations,and then the battle got under way. TheMontcalm units were allocated the partof a landing party in the attack forceand had to attack and storm a ridgerising sharply to a height of about 25feet, with machine gun nests of defend­ers on top.

The Navy stormed its objectives with;;uch determination and aggressivenessthat the ridge was captured. Highpraise was given by the Army officialson the discipline and bearing of theNaval personnel under fire. Althoughblanks were used in rifles and machineguns, there was sufficient live ammuni­tion such as mines and mortars explod­ing in the vicinity of the assault frontto create a genuine atmosphere.

The discomfort of crawling throughtwo feet of snow and slush (one stilltends to keep one's head down eventhough they are "only blanks") andthe strain of the physical exertion ofclimbing that ridge, were bravely borneby the naval personnel. Montcalm'sofficers were proud of the fine perform­ance given by their men and of theacknowledgement given by the armystaff in stating their complete satisfac­tion with the effort contributed by themen of Montcalm.

Keeping Cool In CedarwoodCPO Kenneth Guthrie

On the last Sunday in March, HMCSCedarwood, was at deep anchorage inDiscovery Passage off Campbell River.She was veered to 400 fathoms ofanchor wire in 170 fathoms of water, abrisk half gale was blowing and anumber of scientists aboard were busyattempting to measure tidal currentswhich had reached a velocity of oversix knots.

CPO Kenneth Blair Guthrie wasstanding Officer of the Watch. Sud­denly out of the South came a sea-goingtug, the Tiger towing an enormousbarge which bore rapidly down on theanchored ship. The tug hesitated, hercaptain justifiably awed at finding aship anchored under these circumstan­ces, and apparently wondering on whichside of the ship to pass.

Encouraged by toots on the siren andincreasingly forceful instructions fromthe Cedarwood's loud hailer he decidedto pass down the starboard side. Buthe had waited too long and the mas­sive barge, propelled by the howlingwind and racing tide, was completelyout of control.

Finally grasping the situation, theTiger dashed madly off to port. Cedarwood's foc'sle was cleared, lower deckswere cleared. The heavy steel barge,appropriately named "Gibraltar",swung down the starboard side of thelittle wooden ship and missed rippingopen her planking by inches.

During this period of intense strainChief Guthrie appeared absolutely atease. His only noticeable reaction tothe prospect of being rammed was anaudible speculation on the possibility oftwo weeks' survivors' leave.

This word picture has many unusualcharacteristics such as a Chief PettyOfficer as Officer of the Watch, and aship anchored in 170 fathoms of water.

This is not a fairy tale. ChiefGuthrie, of the comparatively newQuartermaster Instructor Branch, isfully qualified as a watchkeeping officerand on one occasion even assumed thenavigating duties on board HMCSCedarwood. Anchoring in 170 fathomsof water is quite simple aboard this Ilt­tIe ship considering that on many

occasions she has dropped the pick in·up to 400 fathoms.

Apart from this, a man who regardsimminent ramming with the detach­ment the average man reserves formuch lesser happenings is outstanding.It is for this reason he was immediatelychosen "Man of the Month". It ishoped the balance of this article willexplain how a seemingly normal mancan arrive at such a nerveless and col­lected frame of mind.

Chief Guthrie was born in Brandon,Manitoba. He went through the stand­ard routine as a child and undoubtedly

would have ended up as the hometownbaseball star and head of the local car­penter's union if a certain paperhangerfrom Austria hadn't had different ideas.

So young Guthrie followed in hisolder brother's footsteps and soon wasinvolved in the trials and tribulationsof wartime new-entry training in Esqui­malt. The Navy, perhaps surprised athis survival, sent him to sea in HMCSPrince Robert (armed merchantcruiser), convoying troops to HongKong.

With the fall of Hong Kong, he. re­turned to the West Coast, but was

immediately sent to Halifax where hetook a six week LR3 course. He wasthen drafted to HMCS Sorel, one of theearly "short foc'sle" corvettes whichwas doing yeoman work on the NorthAtlantic convoy routes.

His next ship was HMCS Mahone, aBangor minesweeper. Here, over aperiod of 27 months, he qualified asLeading Seaman, Petty Officer, andTorpedo Coxswain, thus learning in the"school of hard knocks" what is nowacquired in the quiet solitude of anoverheated class room. Just as he wasbegil1ning to feel the need for a change,the Mahone was rammed off Louisburgby a merchant ship. One man waskilled, and two were missing, but, inspite of the extensive damage, the shipwas able to make Louisburg for thetemporary repairs necessary for returnto Halifax.

He then commissioned HMCS Capit­ano on the West Coast. She promisedto be a happy ship, having beenlaunched under the auspices of a pros­perous brewery, but unfortunately hewas not in her long enough to reapbenefits so rightly expected. After twomonths he was back on the East Coastin the Bangor minesweeper, HMCSStratford.

Shortly after completing work-ups offBermuda the ship suffered from a com­mon occupational hazard of escortsduring the war; that is, she was ram­med. Petty Officer Guthrie was notvery much perturbed, he was gettingused to being rammed by this time.He merely inserted a clause in his lifeinsurance policy stating that his bene­ficiaries could collect if he were lost"due to friendly action", and carriedon convoy work out of Newfoundlandin HMCS Saskatoon. It was duringthis period that Guthrie decided thatthe paperhanger was about to be pasted,and in joyful anticipation of this event,got married to his childhood sweet­heart in January, 1945.

His anticipation having proven cor­rect, he was next observed preparingthe frigate Inch Arran for action in thePacific. But as the Japanese were

HMCS Cornwallis to complete their seatraining.

Changes in complement are continu­ing rapidly and it is expected the shipwill carry out training this year withapproximately 80 per cent new crew.

HMCS Gloucester

Owing to its increasing growth,Gloucester Naval Radio Station becameofficially known as HMCS Gloucester onApril 1.

Apart from being a training school forCommunications Supplementary person­nel, Gloucester contains the commandoffices of the Senior Officer Supplemen­tary Radio Stations, Lieut.-Cdr. (C)John S. Hall, RCN, who is also com­manding officer of the establishment.

Recent appointments to and fromGloucester include Lieut. (S) H. S.McClymont and Lieut.-Cdr. (SB) H. G.McMullen to HMCS Bytown and Lieut.(S) Colin White from HMCS Cornwallisas Supply Officer. Petty Officer F. L.Dobbin, formerly in charge of the galley,has been drafted to HMCS Stadacona,Petty Officer F. J. Kushner, formerly incharge of naval stores, to HMCS Huronand Petty Officer J. A. Dunbar has join­ed the Coronation Contingent.

A television set was recently pur­chased with mess funds and installedin the Chief and Petty Officers' Lounge.Reception is excellent from Montrealand Syracuse, N.Y., while the localOttawa station will be operating earlyin June.

The wives of personnel in marriedquarters have formed a social clubwhich meets bi_monthly in the Chiefs'and Petty Officers' Lounge.

At the opening meeting last month,Mrs. R. H. Whetmore was elected presi­dent and Mrs. B. H. Pirt secretary­treasurer.

HMCS La Hulloise

The "Fighting Lady", HMCS La Hul­loise, sailed from Halifax May 18 forthe United Kingdom and the Coronation.With her were a lucky group of UNTDcadets sailing for the first cadet cruiseof the year which will embrace thespectacular event.

The departure of the La HuHoisemarked the end of a long refit, finish­ing touches, including a paint job, andher trials and work-up program.

TAS School

Ten new classes were started atthe Torpedo Anti-Submarine School atHMCS Stadacona during the month ofApril. They were: TD3 "H", TD3 "G",TD3 "I", TD3 "J", TD3 "K", TD3 "L",TD2 "M", TD2 "N", TD1 "G" andJOLTC "H".

Chai1ges in staff included the draft­ing of CPO George Edward Jamieson,to HMCS Iroquois, and PO John Mc­Donald, to HMCS WaHaceburg.

PACIFIC COMMAND

HMCS Crusader

Three men serving in HMCS Cru­sader have decided they prefer a ham­mock in a destroyer at sea to a cot inan army tent in Korea, following a re­cent eight-day tour of Canadian Armypositions there. The same applies tothe food, they said.

The trio, AB Clifford Moore, of Arun­del, P.Q., AB Keith Bennett, of Winni­peg, and CPO Elmer J. Dodds, ofMossbank, Sask., were the first Cana­dian sailors to take the tour, althoughCanadian soldiers have gone along inRCN destroyers for Korean patrolsbefore. The purpose of the tours is to

familiarize soldier and sailor with howeach service operates in the warth~atre.

Leaving the Crusader at Kure, Japan,the Crusader men were flown to Seoulwhere they were taken to the PrincessPatricia Canadian Light Artillery campfor four days, during which they wereattached to a support platoon duringcompany and battalion manreuvres.They surprised everybody with theirmarksmanship with the 3·5 rocketlauncher, which has similar sights tosome naval guns.

Then followed two days with theRoyal Canadian Horse Artillery, whose25-pounder field guns the men foundwere not unlike in action to the Cru­sader's main armament. A trip to aCanadian observation post at the frontand a final two days back with the"Pats" completed their tour. In thefront, C rations were used, but foodwas good at company headquarters, al.,though they claimed it didn't comparewith the fare in the Crusader.

HMCS Malahat(Victoria)

The minesweeper HMCS Sault SteMarie has again been made available to~embers of Victoria's Naval Division,HMCS Malahat, and between now andearly October constant use will be madeof the vessel for training purposes.

The first in schedule of 12 week-endtraining cruIses was made in the SaultSte Marie over the week-end of April11-12, when the reservists travelled toEverett, Washington. Another cruisewas made to New Westminster on April25-26.

The balance of the week-end trainingcruise program will find the 'sweepervisiting an assortment of ports of thePacific Northwest including Anacortes,Seattle, Port Angeles, Bellingham andPort Townsend, all in the state ofWashington; and such British Columbiaports as Nanaimo, Ganges, Ladysmithand Vancouver.

Full participation in Windsor's cele­bration on the coronation day, of HerMajesty, Queen Elizabeth II, is beingplanned by the ship's company of HMCSHunter.

Commander W. G. CurrY,the com­manding officer, is a member of the civiccommittee planning the events for June2. Included is a parade of military uriitsin the district in which the division isexpected to play a leading part.

For its own part, Hunter planned a, ship's company dance for May 30. '

The ~idi Vidi Lancers

ALTHOUGH one of the navy's young­est reserve establishments, HMCS

Cabot is the proud possessor of traditionsgoing back further than any other navaldivision in Canada, the St. John's divis­ion being the descendant of the firstnaval reserve to be f()rmed in what wasEngland's oldest colony and is nowCanada's newest province.

It was in 1901 that the NewfoundlandGovernment agl-eed to raise and pay theexpenses of maintaining a naval re­serve division of 400 men. A recruitingcampaign was started and the oldcorvette Calypso was stationed in St.John's as a drill ship.

In 1902, Lieut. Walter Hose, RN, wasappointed to the light cruiser Cllarybdisadditional for training the Newfound­land Naval Reserve and 'held thisappointment until the spring of 1905.

Almost from its inception, the divisionbecame popularly known as the "Quidi

Vidi (pronounced Kiddy Viddy)Lancers", the name being derived froma lake just outside St. John's. If origin­ally the "Lancers" were referred to inslightly derisive tones, it was not longbefore they came to be regarded withpride and respect.

It was the practice to embark the newentry reservemen at St. John's in thefall of each year and, after a shortperiod at Halifax for Idtting up andbasic training, they were taken southfor the winter cruise divided betweenHM Ships Ariadne (flag ship) andCharybdis. When in port they werecombined for training purposes.

In the words of the officer who train­ed them for three years, "The menmade splendid seamen, most keen andamenable to discipline, and invariablyreceived the highest commendationfrom the senior officers who inspectedthem from time to time.

"In the fleet regattas, they almostwithout exception used to win whateverboat pulling event they competed in,owing to the exceptionally quick strokewith which they pulled, putting everyounce of weight into the oar whenalmost at right angles to the boat . . .a stroke which the Newfoundland fish­ermen used in their dories and whichthey could maintain for extraordinarilylong distances."

In time the division had an opportun­ity to prove its value to the full andachieved a splendid record of battlehonours.

What is the purpose of Passive De­fe\lce?

In the words of Lieut. Duval, "Pas­sive Defence is designed to function inthe event of an enemy attack, and tosupplement existing services during anypeacetime emergency". HMCS Naden. . . its personnel and facilities . . .form an integral and extremely import­ant paJ;'t of not only the naval, but theover-all defence organization in thePacific Command area.

The PD plan is being prepared tocope with any of the following aspectscif Passive Defence or disaster:

Personnel protection; minimizing dam­age to Naden installations; maintenanceof essential services; rescue of trappedpersonnel ,md handling of casualties;evacuation, and provision of accommo­dation and immediate requirements ofpersonnel involved; decontaminationprocedures; allocation of equipmentand personnel to emergency stations;control arrangements for activities andequipment in 'the Naden area, andliaison with Pacific Command andCivil Defence organizations.

The Passive Defence program hasbeen extended to take in every officerand man attached to Naden, and allhave hea,rd lectures and seen films re­lated to such preparedness. This lec­ture-film series is to be continued inan effort to maintain interest and keepall personnel fully acquainted with thelatest in Passive Defence developments.

Decontamination and monitoringcourses are conducted by Naden'sDamage Oontrol School; medical train­Ing is provided at the Medical School,while fire-fighting is taught under thedirection of the Command Fire Chief.For the present, facilities are not athand for complete training in light andheavy rescue operations, but instructionin those fields is being conducted ona limited scale.

Coast Personnel

HMCS Naden, the RCN Barracks atEsquimalt, has made considerable pro­gress in preparing itself against anypossible enemy attack or other form ofdisaster.

The preparation pattern is summar­ized in the words, Passive Defence,naval counterpart of an organizationmore commonly known as Civil Defence.

Dockyards and all other Royal Can­adian Navy establishments are respon­sible for training their own Passive De­fence organizations.

Such a training program got underway in Naden late last year and therehas been no let-up in instruction sincethat time. Emphasis is placed on suchvital operations as decontamination(cleansing and making safe an areacontaminated by gas or atomic par­ticles), monitoring (determining extentof radioactivity), fire-fighting, lightrescue, heavy rescue and medicalstudies. i

Naden's first PD team consisted of25 men, selected from widely scatteredbranches within the West Coast train­ingestablishment. The second teamnumbered close to 50 men, and a simi­lar number are in a third group atpresent completing training.

The program requires individual teammembers to take intensive training inone of the aforemenUoned five phasesof Passive Defence for several hours perweek for six weeks. All PD personnelmust also follow a similar six-'weekschedule in medical study' and practice.

Yachtsmen from the Royal NovaScotia Yacht Squadron won the Fraser­Harris Trophy April 19 in Halifaxharbour. They competed against eightnaval entries and one from the Arm­dale Yacht Club in whaler and dinghyraces to win the first official sailingregatta of the season at Halifax.

The annual classic was sponsored bythe Royal Canadian Naval SailingAssociation under direction of the Com­modore, Lieut. (E) G. H. F. Poole­Warren, and the supervision of Lieut.­Cdr. Kenneth E. Grant, officer of theday.

Paul Rawlings piloted the Squadronto a first in the whaler event and DonGillis of the Squadron came fourthamong the dinghies. Payzant of theNaval Research Establishment was sec­ond and Lieut. Maurice M. Carey ofStadacona came third in the whalerrace.

Lieut.-Cdr. Hutchins, of HMCS Corn­waHis, Lieut. (L) Rod Hutcheson, ofHMCS Shearwater and Miss DianaEvans, of Naval Research, took first,second and third place respectively inthe dinghy race.

Races were run over a course startingfrom the naval air base under a sunnysky and with a 10-15 knot breeze.

Final Point Standings were: RNSYS2969; NRE, 2965; Sheaj'water, 2746;RCNSA, 2665; CornwaUis, 2624; Stada­cona, 2600; AYC, 2314; Huron, 2245;Quebec, 1985; and Sioux, 1296.

Officer Returns toSquash Pinnacle

When Lieut.-Cdr. John D. McCor­mick took over his old job on the staffof the P and RT School at HMCSStadacona this March he also took overa sport he had dominated prior to shift­ing to HMCS Naden's p.t. school acouple of years ago.

He won the Stadacona senior finalsquash title from Lieut. Herbert H.Smith in straight games by scores of15-8, 15-7 and 15-8. Then he beatLieut. Brian Bell-Irving to the Com­mand senior title, again by straightgames, 15-10, 15-12 and 15-10.

Coverdale TeamsStiff Contenders

Two off-station "junkets" by teamsfrom Coverdale Naval Radio Stationdidn't produce any victories, but theplayers in each case had the satisfactionof putting up some stiff competition.

The volleyball team entered the Mari­time Volleyball Championship Tourna­ment at Halifax and showed enoughform to convince the opposition thatCoverdale is likely to produce worthycontenders in next year's bout.

Navy at ChurchillTops Two Leagues

Spring comes late in Churchill, Mani­toba, and by the time the long hockeyseason had ended the Navy Senior teamthere was in such fighting trim that itwas ready to challenge any other teamthe Royal Canadian Navy could produce.

Behind their confidence was the factthat the players from HMC Naval RadioStation had swept through the regularseason without a loss and had droppedonly one game in the playoffs to win theFort Churchill Garrison Senior HockeyChampionship.

That this kind of thing may becomehabitual was seen in the fact that theNavy Junior Hockey Team, after losingthe first two games, came back withthree straight victories in the playoffsto take the junior title. The juniorshad finished second in the league stand­ings.

Navy Takes TitleIn Maritime Loop

Down two games in a best of fiveseries, Halifax Navy went on to beatCampbellton Tigers in three straightgames to win the Maritime Interme­diate hockey championship April 13 atHalifax.

The New Brunswick club, led by theformer pro Bud Hellyer, were heavyfavourites to win the title after beatingthe sailors in the first two games of thefinals on New Brunswick ice. Over theweek-end of April 11, however, the sail­ors triumphed by scores of 8-1 and 5-2.On April 13 before a crowd of over2,000, they racked up a 7-3 victory toclinch the title.

HMCS Haida won two basketball fix­tures from her sister ship, the Atha­baskan, during a recent stay alongsidein Sasebo, Japan, between Korean pat­rols of the destroyers.

Thanks to the 14 points scored bypivot man PO John William Ayres, the

Haidas took the game with a decisive42-30. The second contest was harderpulling, although the east-coasters man­aged again to edge out a fighting Atha­baskan team 32-31. This Haida victorywas attributed to Lieut. Norman S.Jackson, who made some deadly shotsin the pinches.

Supply "A" team won the StadaconaInterpart Bowling League by the diffi­cult feat of playing a whole seasonwithout a loss. The Quakers led for three quarters,but in the final, Navy made a desperatedrive, tied it up at 50-50 and fromthere on, the teams countered basket forbasket until the last half-minute whenthe Navy made its break count.

In addition to playing in the LowerFraser Valley Softball League, theAldergrove team has arranged game'swith the nearby American towns ofLynden and Sumas.

Sioux HockeyistsRepeat in East

West Coast glory wasn't enough forthe hockey team of HMCS Sioux-al­though it stemmed from a season whichsaw the team emerge on top in fivegames out of six played.

Challenges to exhibition hockeygames were sent, before the Sioux de­parted for the East Coast, to HMCSStadacona and HMCS Cornwallis. Therest is history.

Off the ice for a month, the Siou:J;team retained enough condition to de­feat Stadacona 5-4 and Cornwallis 9-3.

A stellar defence player during theseason was AB Ted Audette of Clover­dale, B.C.

TAS School TopsBasketball League

TAS School took top honours in theStadacona Interpart Basketball Leagueby downing Electrical "A" in the finals.

AMATEUR RADIOSTATION REVIVED

The newly re-activated amateur radiostation, VEINN, located in the Electri­cal School at HMCS Stadacona, hasjoined the world wide fraternity ofamateur radio, commonly referred to as"ham radio".

HMCS Stadacona Amateur RadioClub was organized on January 21 witha membership of 13 and elected thefollowing slate of officers: Honorarypresident, the Commodore, RCN Bar­racks; director, Officer-in-Charge, HMCElectrical School; president, Lieut.(L)J. A. Kiely; vice-president, PO R. R.Zeits, and secretary-treasurer, Lieut.D. A. Cameron.

The prime object of the club is toenable interested personnel to pursuetheir hobby and assist as much ql! pos­sible those who are striving to reachthe necessary standards to qualify foran amateur radio licence. .

The work of overhauling, refittingand installing equipment was carriedout under the direction of Com.mis­sionedRadio Officer W. F. Krogel andCPO R. R. Curtis.

The station equipment consists of an89Q transmitter working on 20- and :75­meter phone or continuous wave. Thereceiver is an AR88. Associated eqtiip­ment includes a control panel, speechamplifier, monitor scope and frequencymeter. Aerials consist of a long wireapproximately 350 feet long, severafdipoles and a 20-meter beam ml.derconstruction.

All the equipment is convenientlygrouped around the operating deskwhere complete control of the stationis exercised.

999. CZECHO-SLOVAKIAN PUFFIN.This extraordinary bird has to beseen to be believed, and even thennot sometimes. It has a rufousrump, striped speculum, vinaceousvermiculations, albino axillaries, di­chromatic crown, cerulean culmenand lanceolate laminae. It is pec­tinate, pelagic and pensile. It hascuriously crepuscular habits. Itseems more and more doubtful thatit will ever be seen; which is morethan can be said about severalthings of lesser importance.

The president noted an increase inheadquarters staff of the Fund and ,paid'warm tribut'e to the work of Lieut.­Cdr. Woodward, the secretary-treasurerof the Fund for the past three years.He has been relieved by Lieut. HarryMcClymont, who had the job three yearsago and who, since then, has been amember of the Central Claims Com.­mittee.

(a) They are qualified ,by virtueof previous service in the Regu­lar Force,Wartime. Service (ofany le:Qgth) or Service in theActive Service Force; or

(b) While still on the Active Listhaving completed at least threeyears continuous exemplaryservice in the RCN (R) an ap­plication for assistance is re­commended personally by theCommanding Officer of theirDivision as deserving special

stated that "Ex-RCN personnel musthave completed 12 months continuousservice in' the RCN to be eligible forthe benefits· of the Fund, unless:

(a ) they are invalided from theService for a disability attri­buted ,to th~ Naval Service, Of,

(b) they are qualified by virtueof previous active wartime orRCN(R) service".

The financial audit showed that 1952ended with an excess of income of$7,808.15, before taking into accountgrants for assistance of $9,793.75 au­thorized during that year but not asyet settled.

"This rather satisfact9ry financialposition of income and expenditure lastyear was largely due to the increasein donations received in 1952 amountingto $20,683;13 as compared with $10,077.08in 1951," Engineer Bear-Admiral G. L.Stephens ReN (Ret'd) said in hispresi­dent's report. "The greater part of thisincrease came from RCN sources an~

we are more than grateful to thoseships and establishments and office;rsand men" who have contributed to theFund' through .Ships and Mess Fundsand by personal donations.. "This however is no time to feel too

satisfied 9r rest. The demands on theFund are increasing 'and will continueto do. so as the Navy expands. Thereare still several ships who have notdirectly contributed in 1952 and onlyapproximately 300 individuals· out ofsome 15,000 have taken advantage ofthe personal allotment scheme.

having enough trouble without hispresence, the Navy saw fit to draft himback to a Bangor and it was in HMCSSarnia that Guthrie celebrated VJ day.

Every celebration must have it shangover, however, and, his consistedof a six-month stint in naval auxiliaryvessel Laymore dismantling boom de­fences and anti-submarine gear on theeast coast. By all accounts this was amost onerous job that could have onlybeen enjoyed by the German submarine

.if it had been carried out during thewar.

After this he spent a year on the WestCoast in the Reserve Fleet. It must bestated that during this period he wasnot rammed.

Finally he received a two-year shoredraft to HMCS Chatham in PrinceRupert. In spite of the constant rainhe did not grow the "webbed toes" saidto be characteristic of the inhabitants ofthis region. He enjoyed his stay inPrince Rupert very much and was a

. member of the' All-Star Baseball Teamthat took its share of prizes in the"Notthern British Columbia and AlaskaLeague".

He was in f-IMCS Ontario for boththe Australian cruise and the Royaltour. An avid swimmer, he became aconnoisseur of some of the world'smost famous beaches and their acces­sories. An experienced n1ember of thisship's famous softball team he aidedin defeating all American, Australianand assorted infidels who had theaudacity to challenge the Canadians'supremacy in this field.

After taking a quartermaster instruc­tor conversion. course, Chief Guthriejoined his present ship on August 25,1952.

Although his present duties includestanding Officer of the Watch, thus as­sisting the scientists in certain phases oftheir work, he also does his f~ll job asCoxsw'ain.

Chief Petty Officer Guthrie was one ofthree brothers who served in the war.His younger brother was lost in HMCSValleyfieLd. His older brother is still inthe service, a Chief Petty Officer inHMCS Unico1'n, The Saskatoon NavalDivision. To date no male heirs havejoined the families of either of thesestalwarts. But between them they havethree daughters (one Cedarwood Guth­rie and two Unicorn Guthries) and theWRENS are recruitingl-L.G.S.

In HMC Gunnery School, at Halifax,is a Hall of Fame featuring portraitsof the officers who have been in chargeof gunnery training on the East Coastsince its inception some 37 years ago.

The gunnery "empire') has dug up aconsiderable amount of information onits record of service in the RCN, as ameans of adding its own Canadiantraditions to those inherited from theRoyal Navy. The Hall of Fame, a seriesof photographs of the officers who havecommanded the school, is part of thisproject.

It adorns the main corridor of theschool and serves as constant reminderof the part the gunnery branch hasplayed in the growth of the RCN. Thereare 17 framed portraits, and the earlierones bring to mind the struggles of theRoyal Canadian Navy, first for its veryexistence, then for due recognition.

The liall of Fame begins with Com­mander Arthur F. L. Atwood, whotransferred' to the RCN in 1917 afterserving on l~an from the Royal Navy.He retired in 1920 as a captain and, asa civil servant, became Armament Sup­ply Officer at Halifax. He retired fromthe Civil Service in 1930 and died onDecember 30, 1950.

Next was Lieut. Victor' G. Brodeur,who retired as Rear-Admiral Brodeur,Commanding Officer Pacific Coast, in1946.

The wardroom of HMeS Unicorn to­day has a unique and stirring relnindeJ;of the Battle of Trafalgar, through thegenerosity of Major D. Fusedale ofSaskatoon.

At the Saskatoon. naval division'sannual award night, which saw MajorFusedale'sdaughter, Ord. Wren DorcasFusedale, carry off honours as thedivision's best Wren new entry, aframed photograph of the log of HMSEuryalus for October 21, 1805, was pre­sented by Maj or FUSedale to Com­lnander O. K. McClocklin, Unicorn'scOlnmanding officer.

The date entered on the log wasthat of the Battle of Trafalgar and theEuryalus was' one of the stout ships inLord Nelson's fleet.

The log, the original of which is inpossession of Lloyds of London, recordsthe reception of Adlniral Nelson'silnmortal exhortation that "Englandlexpects that every man will do hisduty" in the battle to follow. Thephotographic -copy was obtained byMajor Fusedale while serving overseasin the Second World War.

Mr. W. D. Johnson, CommissionedGunner, served as officer-in-charge forvarying periods during some of the"lean" years of the Navy. He is nowliving in retirement.

Lieut. Adrian M. Hope followed asofficer-in-charge. He retired in 1951 inthe rank of commodore and was thesenior gpnnery officer of the RCN onleaving the service.

Lieut, Richard Oland came next. Hedied in Canada, in the rank of captain,during the Second World War.

Lieut.-Cdr. J. W. R. Roy was next insuccession. As her commanding officer,he went down in the l\lJargaree in 1940.

Then came' Lieut.-Cdr. Archibald H.Baker. lIe is now a lieutenant-com­mander in charge of the diving depotand Superintendent of Diving in HMCDockyard, Halifax. .

Following him was Commander E. P.Tisdall, now Commodore of the RCNBarracks, Halifax.

Rear-Admiral Hugh F. Pullen, who onApril 1 became Chief of Naval Person­nel at Headquarters, served as officer­in-charge of the Gunnery School asa lieutenant-commander.

The next portrait is that of Lieut.W. G. Ross, who as an ordnancecaptain is now Director General ofNaval Ordnance.

After him was Lieut. St. Clair Bal­four, now a retired captain, RCN (R).

Lieut. M. A. Medland, the next insuccession, is now an acting commo­dore and is Naval Member of theCanadian Joint Staff, Washington.

Next in line is Lieut. T. C. Pullen,younger brother of Rear-AdmiralPullen and now a comm-ander andexecutive officer of HMCS Cornwallis.

Lieut.-Cdr. Sir R. Thomas' Butler,Bart., was officer-in-charge while onloan to the RCN from the Royal Navy.

Then came Commander F. R. Base,who retired in 1951 as commandingofficer of HMCS York, in the r~nk ofcaptain, RCN (R) .

The most recent picture is that ofLieut.-Cdr. Leo P. McCormack, whoheaded the Gunnery School from 1947to 1950. He is now a commander andStaff Officer (Gunnery) to the NavalMelnber in Washington.

Commander G.M. Wadds, presentofficer-in-charge, will be photographedand his portrait placed with the restwhen he moves on to a new appoint­ment. Thus the gallery will expandthrough the years, linking present andpast in the Gunnery Branch and theNavy as a whole.

Anticipating our arrival, "SampanJenny", as she was known to us, waslying in wait for, us near our assignedberth, flying an eight breadth green flagon which was embroidered in gold,"Welcome HMS Anson".

At that time she' and her crew hadacquired a brand new junk with beauti­fully varnished decks and kept in thebest "Bristol fashion". This handsomevessel was purchased with the proceedsof the "gash" collectiori. from our shipduring a previous sojourn in' Hong

Kong, which illustrates, I think, thehigh prices paid for the less "vitamized"gash of the RN,

nest I would like to draw your atten­tion to an error in the article "Man ofthe Month", page 16 centre column, inwhich it is stated that the Niagara tookthe Candytuft in tow, The correctversion of this incident is as 'follows:

The HMS Candytuft blew her boilershortly after "darken ship" on the nightof September 9, 1941. HMCS Bitter­sweet, another flower class corvette WitS

ordered to stand by. The followingmorning, September 10, the Canaytuftwas taken in. tow by the Bittersweetand proceeded to return to St. John's,Nfld. In the early hours of the morn­ing of September 11 the Niagaraarrived with medical aid. She left againbefore noon leaving medical assistanceaboard the Candytuft. No doubt PONewman was one of these men, but tostate that the Niagara towed the Candy­tuft is a gross error, as she had alreadybeen in tow 24 hours before theNiagara arrived. ' '

My only reason in writing is thatyou may wish to correct this error. Iwas serving on the Bittersweet as aleading stoker at the time.
