Feast of the Holy Dormition

of the Most Holy Mother of God

In Byzantine Churches the first Great Feast in the

liturgical calendar is the Nativity of the Mother of

God (Sept 8). The feast of her Holy Dormition (Aug 15),

coming at the end of the Church year, brings this cycle to a

close. Like a musical masterwork, our annual remembrance

of the life, death, and resurrection of Christ begins with an

“overture” (the birth of His Mother) and concludes with

a “coda” (her entry into the new life which is promised to

us). What is a “Dormition”? Our English word echoes the

French and Latin words for “sleep.” The corresponding

Greek word, koimisis, appears in English as “cemetery,” or

“sleeping place.” By calling death a “repose” or a “falling

asleep” we are affirming our faith that death is not an

ultimate reality.

The early Tradition generally places Mary’s death in

Jerusalem, a few years after the death and resurrection of

Christ. According to one early version, “…the apostles

carried the couch, and laid down her precious and holy body

in Gethsemane in a new tomb. And, behold, a perfume of

sweet savor came forth out of the holy sepulcher of our Lady

the Mother of God; and for three days the voices of invisible

angels were heard glorifying Christ our God, who had been

born of her. And when the third day was ended, the voices

were no longer heard; and from that time forth all knew that

her spotless and precious body had been transferred to

paradise.” Other of these writings speak of all the apostles

being summoned and/or transported miraculously to attend

the Holy Virgin at her passing. When Mary reposes, they see

Christ taking her soul to heaven. When they bury her body

as the Lord had instructed, the apostles once more see

Christ. Christ restores her soul to her body and glorifies both

with Him. In all these accounts Mary enters eternal life in

the fullness of her spiritual and bodily existence.

The Dormition of Mary points to an aspect of eternal life

only briefly sketched out in the Scriptures. There we read

that the risen Christ is “the first-fruits of those who

have fallen asleep” (1 Cor 15:20). To call Him “first-fruits”

presumed that there is more to the crop, as St. Paul

elaborates: “Christ the first-fruits, afterward those who are

Christ’s at His coming” (v. 23). Mary’s participation in

eternal life is unique – she is not awaiting the return of her

Son; she now fully shares in the eternal life in body as well

as spirit by a special gift of grace. Some may see this belief

as unscriptural, contradicting the very words of St Paul.

Rather they confirm by a historic moment what would

otherwise simply be an allegation. Mary’s dormition

demonstrates that St. Paul’s teaching is not mere words.

Human beings can share physically in the Resurrection and

Mary is there to prove it. In the words of the Catechism of

the Catholic Church, Mary’s dormition “…is a singular

participation in her Son’s Resurrection and an anticipation

of the resurrection of other Christians.

відзначається Католицькою Церквою 15 серпня, своїм

корінням сягає п'ятого століття і широко поширена в

усьому християнському світі. Одночасно, слід зазначити,

що Новий Завіт ніколи не згадує про останні дні

життя, смерті та Успіння Пресвятої Богородиці. Не існує

Її могили, мощей та реліквій.

Культ Божої Матері та свято Її успіння

Літургійний культ Пресвятої Богородиці починається

від Ефеського Собору 431 року, який окреслив догму про

її Богоматеринство. У творах святих Отців до четвертого

століття немає нічого про успіння Богоматері. Лише після

IV сторіччя на основі передання церковні письменники

починають писати про останні хвилини життя Пресвятої

Богородиці. На Заході пише про це святий Григорій

Турський, на Сході — єрусалимський патріарх Модест,

святий Андрій Критський та святий Іван Дамаскин.

Наприкінці VII і з початку VIII сторіч церковні

письменники починають звертати увагу не тільки на

Її чудесне успіння, але й на Її вознесіння на небо з тілом

та душею.

В VI сторіччі цей празник отримує назву Успіння

Пресвятої Богородиці. На Заході під впливом Сходу

празник з'явився дещо пізніше. Його прийняли у Римі за

часів Папи Сергія І (687-701), а з Риму він перейшов

до інших країн.

Від Першого Ватиканського Собору (1869-1870) у римо

-католицькій Церкві дедалі більше висловлювались

побажання, щоб проголосити догмою загальну віру

Церкви в чудесне Успіння і Внебовзяття Пречистої

Богородиці. Це завдання, узагальнивши думки всіх

єпископів Католицької Церкви, взяв на себе Папа Пій XII,

який 1 листопада 1950 урочисто проголосив догмою

віри, що Непорочна Божа Мати, Приснодіва Марія,

сповнивши біг Свого земного життя, була взята з тілом

і душею до небесної слави.

У різних країнах світу з празником Внебовзяття

пов’язані різноманітні звичаї та традиції. Загально існує

традиція в цей день приносити зілля, квіти та перші

плоди нового врожаю в дар храмам та каплицям,

присвяченим Внебовзяттю. Свято супроводжується

урочистими богослужіннями, церковними процесіями та

театральними дійствами.

У Польщі та багатьох інших європейських країнах цей

день часто називають святом Богоматері Зільної і в храмах

посвячують зілля, квіти, снопи пшениці. Квіти та зілля

у цей празник посвячують також і в Україні. Як же виник

цей звичай?

Існує передання, що за три дні перед Успінням

Архангел Гавриїл сповістив Пречистій Діві Марії про Її перехід у вічність. Того дня в Єрусалимі зібралися всі

апостоли, що проповідували в різних частинах світу.

Запізнився лише святий апостол Тома. За душею Своєї Матері з’явився Ісус Христос у супроводі ангелів і святих,

а апостоли під спів гімнів віднесли Її тіло до гробу і три дні не відходили від нього. На третій день з’явився

апостол Тома і бажав попрощатися з (prod. na st. 3)

Божою Матір’ю. Коли ж гробниця була відкрита, то замість тіла Пресвятої Богородиці апостоли знайшли

квіти та похоронні пелени. Тоді вони здогадалися, що не тільки душа, але й тіло Пресвятої Богородиці було взято

на небо. На згадку про цю подію в урочистість

Внебовзяття Пресвятої Діви Марії після Служби Божої посвячують квіти та зілля.

Посвячення зілля –– це один із засобів освячення самої

людини. Молитва благословення зілля і квітів на цей день

передбачає використання цього зілля, квітів і плодів

людьми та тваринами. У цій молитві священик просить

Бога, щоб Він Своїм благословенням вчинив усе це

цілющим та щоб воно також охороняло від недуг та

всякого зла. Не люди проходять до храму заради зілля,

а зілля посвячується у храмах заради людей!

Під час обряду посвячення зілля і квітів в піснях

оспівують Пречисту Діву як лілею в долині та квітку

полів. Посвячене зілля з пошаною зберігають у

засушеному вигляді. Є звичай класти його у труну когось
