Reflection Bookended by Gratitude BY REV. HARRY GYOKYO BRIDGE WHAT DO “THE HOLIDAYS’ MEAN for you? I am sure that each of us has a different answer. As a child, I loved the holiday season – it meant school vaca- tion, good food, and presents! My fam- ily was small – just me, mom & dad – so “family” wasn’t a big part of the equa- tion for me. The holidays can be difficult for some people. Sometimes we feel like we are “supposed to” feel happy, and if we don’t then we feel even worse. Many people feel obligated to buy lots of presents for people even when they can’t really afford it. Even the change in the weather can affect us. Maybe the Shinshu approach to the holiday season can help us find another way. I like to look at the holidays as be- ginning in November with Thanksgiv- ing, running through the New Year, all the way to January with Hoonko, our special service to commemorate Shin- ran Shonin’s memorial. Thanksgiving is our opportunity to reflect on our lives and give thanks to our loved ones and families for all that we receive from them. New Years is a chance to think about the past year and to aspire to be the best we can be in the coming year. Many people feel obligated to buy lots

of presents for people even when they

Maybe the Shinshu approach to the

holiday season can help us find another

way. i like to look at the holidays as be-

Gordon played his keyboard, sang

songs, told stories, cracked jokes,

and even dressed-up like elvis

Presley, which totally brought the

house down! We all joined in and sang

songs from our generation. it was one

of the most fun and entertaining eve-

nings we’ve had in a long time! i spoke

with Gordon afterwards, and thanked

him for his contributions to the BCa

Gatha collection.

Sunday, the CC Nembutsu

Conference brought over 150 mem-

bers and youth to Fresno to hear

Rev. Dr. David Matsumoto speak

on the Jodo Shinshu parable of the

River of Fire, River of Water for the

youth, and Shinjin to the adults. after-

wards, Gayle and i were busy selling

Bookstore items for over two hours!

There was also a Welcome/Happy

Birthday Luncheon for Rev. Matthew

Muge Hamasaki (of Berkeley), who

recently graduated from the institute

of Buddhist Studies, and now a

full-time kyoshi Minister assigned

to the Central Cal district.

Congratulations, Sensei!

Gayle and i were honored to be

part of the Central Cal and Fresno

Betsuin festivities over the weekend.

Thank you to Maya Lawrence and

the dharma School for inviting the

animals and trainers from Sulphur

Creek on September 27th. We’re

sorry that we missed it. n

TEAM 8 HAD A PRE-AUGUST

luncheon to meet each other and sign

up for duties for the month of august.

We had so much fun that lunch ex-

tended into cocktails! our big event

for the month was the otoki following

the obon service. it turned out to in-

clude lots of clean up from the obon

Festival the previous day, but our

diligent team jumped in and we man-

aged to get the lunch out on time. We

served Chinese food this year that co-

incidentally tied in to Rev Himaka’s

obon sermon. it was also Busshin col-

lation day, so the team pitched in to

finish that up, too.

The other usual activities were

not held this month because of Sum-

mer break, but several hardy mem-

bers of Team 8 did faithfully come out

each Friday to clean up the garden,

and some even bringing their own

equipment!

Thank you to everyone for all your

hard work! yay, team! See you all next

year. n

The Three Refuges SeminarTHE BAY DISTRICT MINISTERS

association is pleased to announce

a seminar to be held at the Palo

alto Buddhist Temple on Saturday,

November 7, 2015, entitled

“Treasure in Our Midst: An In-Depth

Look at the Three Refuges.” This

seminar will be held in conjunction

with the 2015 Bay district Buddhist

Women’s League Conference with the

support of the Bay district Buddhist

Women’s League and the Bay district

dharma School Teachers League.

The Three Refuges, the practice

of taking refuge in the Three

Treasures of Buddha, dharma and

Sangha is shared by all Buddhist tra-

ditions. The Buddha is the awakened

one who spent many years reflect-

ing on the causes of human suffering

before realizing a path to liberation

for all beings. The dharma is the true

teaching that the Buddha provided

as a means to liberate all beings from

suffering. The Sangha is the commu-

nity of people whose lives are illumi-

nated by the teachings of the Buddha.

Please join the Bay district

Ministers at this daylong seminar,

where we will examine the histori-

cal background, doctrinal meaning,

and liturgical practice of the Three

Refuges.

Please see application form or

visit http://www.dharmalantern.net/

Dharma School News By Maya LaWReNCe

THE DHARMA SCHOOL IS BACK IN

full swing! We started the year with

watching the video “Mottainai.” We

don’t want to waste – think about

using things twice! We are learning

about interrelatedness and how we

are dependent on many things and

how we affect others. The Sulphur

Creek Nature Center came to visit!!

We got to touch a king snake!! There

was no touching the skunk or the poi-

sonous newt, though. and the Red-

shouldered hawk was quite amazing!

Next we’ll be helping with our

keirokai celebration. The dharma

School students will decorate “jar

openers” as gifts for our keirokai

members. Hope the lid openers make

it easier to open those pesky jars!

don’t forget our Halloween Party

on October 25th. We’ll have games,

cupcakes, prizes and of course, the

Haunted House!

Thank you to our generous

donors:
