A s I write this article, an-other Labor
Day Weekend Cruise to the Outstation has come and gone. Thirty-five PYC Cruis-ers joined in and while the weather was not the greatest everyone had a great time thanks to the efforts of our cruise hosts Charlie and Patti Bishop and Jim and Julie Hinkley. Also, assisting with the hosting efforts were Gary and Marilyn Erdahl. Those of us that were at the Outstation on Friday evening enjoyed a special treat of fresh barbe-qued Chinook salmon caught that very morning by Marilyn. Thanks Gary and Marilyn for sharing. Also, a special thank you to Dick and Judy Dyer, in honor of Dick’s birthday, for furnish-ing the cheesecake and all the trim-mings. Cruising — Next up on the cruise schedule is our annual pilgrimage to Beacon Rock, which will be in the his-tory books by the time that you receive this copy of the Portlight. Bob Martin and crew always come through with a great weekend of fine food and some-times great weather! Our last official cruise on the 2009 Cruise Schedule is the Halloween Cruise to the Outstation scheduled for October 30th to Novem-ber 1st. To my knowledge this is the first scheduled Halloween cruise to the Outstation and Jim and Linda Dean, our cruise host for the weekend, are promising us a “haunting good time”. Hope to see you all there! Cookouts — There are two cookouts scheduled for October. The first on October 9th is our Pizza and Hobby Showcase Cookout. So all of you hob-byist out there get your stuff together and be prepared to show us what you do. On October 23rd, PYC will be hosting the New Member Luau Cook-out. On the subject of cookouts, the Classic Car and Vintage Boat Cookout held on August 21st set an all time re-cord for cookout attendance. Fred
Carter tells me that there were over 200 members and guest attending. A spe-cial thank you goes to Joe and Penny Spaziani for again hosting this great event. Entertainment — Back by popular demand is the Scotch and Cigar Night, scheduled for October 16th. Mike House will again be hosting this ever popular event. At this writing Mike and Tammy are still cruising up north so I do not have the details for the eve-ning. Watch the bulletin board at the club and your e-mail for details as they become available. Sailing — October brings us the an-nual PYC Grand Prix Regatta sched-uled for October 10th and 11th. Paul Teveliet is promising lots of wind, so all of you PYC sailboat racers get your boats ready. CRYA Closing Day — CRYA Closing Day is Saturday October 3rd. This is always a fun-filled event with lots of activities. Come join us if you can. M-Row Headwalk — Eric Gazow and Tom Springfield have informed me that the new concrete headwalk for M-Row will be delivered in late September or early October. Eric and Tom are always looking for volunteers to help with the assembly and installation work. If you have a few hours to assist them, your help will be greatly appreci-ated. For you members that moor on M-Row there will be some inconven-ience and disruption in accessing your boat houses during the construction process, but in the end it will be well worth it. Just look at L-Row. Wednesday Lunches — The last Wednesday lunch for this year was on September 30th. Wednesday lunch continues to be popular and was well supported by the membership again this year. Thank you everyone for your continued support and watch your 2010 calendar for the return of Wednesday lunch.
PYC Golfers — Larry Snyder tells me that Wednesday golf will continue even though Mother Nature will soon bring the dreaded rain and inclement weather. Larry says that our PYC Golfers are a hearty bunch and that they can handle anything that Mother Nature may hand them. With the change in seasons our boating activities slow down a bit. However, there are plenty of activities here at the club to keep us busy and occupied and where it is warm and dry. As we move into the holiday season, join us for “Fun Times in ‘09”. W e have had several ques-tions about
partnerships in boats and boathouses in the recent weeks. I would like to refer you to Arti-cle II, Section 2 and Section 5. Part-nerships are required to provide nota-rized documentation of ownership to the club. If after five or more years one of the partners acquires 100% ownership he or she may petition the moorage chair to assume the slip. This rule was instituted in order to keep the Move Up/In lists relevant. If you do not have a current rule book, please come to the office and we will help you. Our classified ads which we send out with the monthly statements will now be available on the club’s website, port-landyc.com. Please let the office know if you have sold the items in the ad so we don’t waste space. We have also decided to delete ads after three months. If you still want to advertise, just let the office know. Our dinghy docks are becoming littered with derelict looking vessels. I noticed that most of them do not have identifi-cation on them. Please mark your din-ghy with the vessel’s or your name so that we can maintain space for our moorage members. The next few months are very busy with club and outside events. I look forward to seeing you here. Fred Carter Club Manager

A s we start to notice the signs of Fall, the cool temperatures at night and the beautiful colors
of changing leaves, we know that our cruising season will soon be coming to an end. However, it’s not over yet! Later this month we’ve added a new cruise to the calendar. It’s the Hallow-een Cruise at the Outstation. Our cruise hosts, Jim and Linda Dean and their committee have been making plans since early in the year and they are very excited that it’s almost here! Put your thinking caps on and start designing your costumes and boat decorations! Don’t forget that if you don’t have plans for the weekend following Thanksgiving Day, you can attend the traditional Leftover Cruise at the out-station. There are no cruise hosts for this cruise, or any arranged meals or
activities. You don’t even have to sign up…..just show up and have fun! We all owe Charlie & Patti Bishop and Jim & Julie Hinkley a big “thank you” for a fun packed weekend at the Labor Day Cruise to the Outstation. The showery weekend didn’t put a damper on that event! They thought of every-thing! “THANK YOU” Bishops and Hinkley’s!!! Once again we would like to extend a giant “thank you” to all our wonderful cruise hosts and their committees, for all their hard work and enthusiasm. Because of them, this has been a stellar cruising year! Brian & Donna Moore Cruising Chairpersons M/V Talisman

R ain showers didn’t dampen the spirits of the thirty-four boats and their guests on the Labor Day Cruise. Upon arriving at Willow Bar Outstation cruisers
were welcomed with “wine” goodie bags, hand made by Julie Hinkley and stuffed with treasures including beverage “snap coolers” donated by West Marine. Beginning Friday evening with appetizers and wine tasting, the cruise was off to a ‘merry’ start. Charlie Bishop prepared a challenging Labor Day Trivia quiz and officiated the scor-ing. After much revelry, commentary and a few challenges (yes – you guessed it Larry Snyder was one of the challeng-ers!!) the scores were finally tabulated with Michel DeGroat and Don Peterson tying for first prize. Saturday was a laid back sort of day, beginning with a hosted Continental breakfast. The day was off to a good start. Vis-iting, dinghying, going for walks between rain showers and game playing in the pavilion made for a relaxing day. To top it all off, a fabulous feast of barbecued ribs, fresh corn on the cob, spinach salad and Jim Hinkley’s “World’s Best Bar-beque Beans” were on the menu for dinner. And, for des-sert, Dick and Judy Dyer served birthday cheesecake to cele-brate Dick’s 67th birthday. It was reported that it was also, Jim Nudo’s birthday, and the group enjoyed singing the “Happy Birthday song” a second time. In typical PYC tradition, a fabulous brunch featuring the famous PYC chefs was enjoyed by all on Sunday morning. As usual our cooks out did themselves!! Sunday proved to be another relaxing day and the cruisers enjoyed more games, visiting, walks combined with blackberry picking dur-ing the sun breaks and a competitive game of “31 Poker” before dinner. Although dinner was no-host, there were enough ribs and corn left over so most were able to enjoy the leftovers for a second delicious meal. Many thanks go to Fred and his team for “over feeding” us once again and for the Erdahls for all their help throughout the cruise, including their barbecued salmon appetizers from Marilyn’s Friday morning fishing catch. Also, Bruce Padgett and Karen Denman drove out to join us for dinner on Satur-day and to help with the preparation and serving, many thanks to them as well. The Cruise committee, Jim & Julie Hinkley and Charlie & Patti Bishop, wish to thank all who participated and helped make this Labor Day Cruise a success. Patti Bishop S/V Tropicale

O ur boat, M/V The Bunch, is a Lien Hwa 47 cockpit motoryacht. At the helm on the bridge I have a commanding view of the waters ahead and to each
side as well as the foredeck, but all else is a mystery. Even if I leave the helm I am unable to see the stern of the boat from the bridge, and anyone in the cockpit or on the swim step is on their own. Backing down, as we must do to dock our boat stern-to in our slip, requires an adviser aft calling out distances and alignments. Even a crewperson on the side decks is out of my sight, so communications while ma-neuvering is a real issue. There are many solutions available, some more effective than others. Shouting at each other is cheap in the short term, but could prove the most expensive solution given the costs of selling the boat. “Family communications” radios work well enough, but are subject to interference from other users, on board electronics, and even garage door openers. A sepa-rate issue is the operation and protocol of single frequency press-to-talk radios by the casual user, who just might forget that talk button in the excitement of watching the dinghy being ripped off of your davits. And so we bought “full duplex wireless” communicators, which are each transmitting all of the time to the other users, similar to a telephone. Ours are “Simultalk 24G,” available from Eartec (www.eartec.com). This system operates at 2.4 gigahertz, and is digitally encoded so that each set of users can enjoy their own unique, interference free network. These radios are rechargeable with lightweight headsets, and

fit easily in a pocket. Battery life varies, and we recharge the sets for 25-30 min-utes before each voy-age, which seems to give about 45 to 60 minutes of “on time.” Eartec also offers the “TD900 cyber” sets for the same price, but the 24G is a newer design, and has longer battery life. After a year of hard use, and well out of warranty, our system decided to take a break. I (being an engineer) traced the fault to the transmit-receive module in one of the units and immediately sent the entire system in for repair. Eartec charged a flat fee, replaced one complete communicator and one headset with new units, included a new spare battery, and returned the system to us in a few days. We remain sat-isfied customers, and are happy knowing that bystanders and their property are safer from us now. Joe Brady M/V The Bunch
Empty the black and kidney beans into a colander, rinse and drain. Combine with above in-gredients in stockpot. Begin cooking low and slow, stir-ring constantly as beans will burn if not monitored and stirred. This recipe is for a party of 15. For the Labor Day Cruise I used a ratio of 5X the above ingredients. Another technique is cooking in a large aluminum foil pan on an outdoor grill while stirring every few minutes over low indirect heat. Jim Hinkley M/V Shore Leave

O ver the years, we as members of Portland Yacht Club have on many occasions observed our member and friend Bo Knab proudly
flying his larger than life American flag aboard Luscious. Whether it is Opening Day, Me-morial Day Services at the Outstation, Fourth of July, the Astoria Regatta Days River Parade or any other special occa-sion that Bo just wants to proudly fly the flag; he does so in grand style. This past summer, during the Astoria Regatta Days Marine Parade, Sue and I had the privilege and honor to be aboard Luscious. As the deck crew raised the flag to the top of the mast and the wind blew the flag out in front of Luscious, I looked back at Bo as he held firmly onto the helm. He had this grin from ear-to-ear, like a kid in a candy store, as he proudly looked up at “Ole Glory” flying before the wind. What a great site! This past September 3rd, Sue and I joined several thousand other Portlanders attending the Oregon Symphony Con-cert at Waterfront Park. Bo and his crew aboard Luscious were anchored in the cove, also enjoy-ing the evening. To-wards the end of the evening, and as dusk came upon us, I noticed that Bo had
pulled anchor and the deck crew was raising the giant flag. Then as if by magic, as the Symphony played the finale of the 1812 Overture and the Oregon Army Na-tional Guard fired it’s howitzers; through the smoke and
haze came Luscious flying it’s larger than life flag with spotlights shining on “Ole Glory. What a beauti-
ful and moving moment! The entire park audi-ence rose to its feet in applause.
Bo, you are a true American and Port-
land Yacht Club is both proud and blessed to have you and Sydney as
members.
Thank you for all you do.
