Presbyterian Church News Vol. 61 No. 5 October / November

Dear Congregation,

As we enter this season of fall, our attention is turned to the themes of harvest, thanksgiving and stewardship. These are three building blocks modeled by the ancient people of the Old Testament, and very much called for at our church.

Here at Westminster Presbyterian Church, we are experiencing a true harvest of blessings. Our fall season is bustling with creative and energetic programming in all of our departments. Our fall season is witnessing the first actual steps of our Westminster 2020 renovations, as we begin work on our environment systems, and

the sound and video systems in our Sanctuary. Our fall season is offering rich worship experiences, as our musical ministry is back at full strength, our worship theme brings much needed attention to the Beatitudes, and Holy Days such as World Communion Sunday,

Reformation Sunday, and All Saints Sunday, bring us to the mountaintops of the liturgical calendar. Yes, in these and many more ways, it is harvest time here at Westminster!

In the Bible, the theme of harvest is always tied to thanksgiving. Ancient people had a keen awareness that it was by God’s providence that the harvest was plentiful. God was the one who provided the rain and the sun, and everything needed for the harvest to be good. As we experience a fruitful harvest here, we too are called to recognize the role that God’s providence has played in it all. This is a time in which a spirit of thanksgiving should fill our lives and our church.

Once we recognize the harvest, and respond in thanksgiving, there is one final step that the biblical pattern offers us. It is to bring the first fruits of our harvest back as an offering to God. As we enter this fall season, we too are asked to bring the first fruits of our blessings back to God. Our 2016 Stewardship season begins this month. Please remember that even though we are giving to a capital campaign, our first and primary call is to support the annual budget of our church. Please be prayerfully considering the kind of pledge you can make for the year ahead, and respond generously to our budget goal for 2017.

Harvest, Thanksgiving, Stewardship. These are the three focuses of fall. May we fully embrace all of them, as we continue to journey into the exciting future God has planned for us here at Westminster Presbyterian Church!

In God’s Love,

Dr. Paul J Kirbas

Our St. Francis Day, ANIMAL WELL FAIR!Sunday, October 2 is known as St. Francis Day in the historical church. St. Francis was passionate about the needs of animals, so in his honor, we will be holding an Animal Well Fair on the Manor Lawn on Sunday, October 2, from 3:00 – 5:00 PM. Our Fair for Animal welfare will include the following:

A Pastoral Blessing of the AnimalsOur pastors will offer individual prayers for your pets, and will offer your pet a special tag for their collar or cage to commemorate the blessing

Ask a Vet BoothA veterinarian will be on hand to answer questions you may have concerning the care of your pet. Please know that this is just an advice event, and no medical treatment will be offered.

A Memorial BoothFor those who have lost a dear pet, we will offer a place for you to remember your pet. You are welcome to bring flowers to lay at this booth.

A Portrait BoothYou will have the opportunity to have a picture taken or portrait made of your pet, either on its own or with you.

The Humane Society Adopt a Pet TentThe Humane Society will be here with adoptable pets. A sponsor has graciously underwritten the adoption fees, so a simple $25.00 processing fee will be all you will need to pay for a lovable pet.

Oklahoma Food, Farm, and Family BoothThe Oklahoma Food, Farm, and Family Organization will have a booth with important information concerning upcoming issues regarding animal welfare and environmental care for our state.

Food TrucksWe will have a few food trucks on hand for tasty snacks and treats. We will also have treats for the pets!

Our Animal Well Fair event is a great event for the whole community. Please help us share the word with anyone who has a pet, or wants a pet. Let’s fill our Manor Lawn with all creatures, great and small!

Urban Mission

From Our Pastor

“The After People”People often ask, “What exactly is a Stephen Minister?” One way to put it is that Stephen Ministers are the After People.

Stephen Ministers are there:

- After the phone call you hoped you’d never get.

- After the funeral, when everyone has left and the emotions you’ve held at bay come crashing in on you.

- After the doctor says, “I’m sorry, but there’s nothing more we can do.”

- After the nursing home director shakes your hand and says, “Welcome to your new home.”

- After the last child honks the horn, waves, and drives away—and the house suddenly seems empty.

- After the baby arrives, demanding more of you than you ever dreamed possible.

Stephen Ministers are ready to come alongside you—or your friends, neighbors, coworkers, or relatives—and provide comfort and support for as long after as needed.

Sundays on The Exchange, Where Faith and Science Meet, we’ll tackle an epidemic in our culture. Join us for this eight week series entitled “Faith and Fear.” Bringing together the lessons of science and faith, we’ll learn how our brains process fear, and how our culture overloads that process. Once we understand how our culture and our brains overdose us with fear, we will go on the road to several faith traditions, to see if there is a clear path to living a fear free life. Join us for “Faith and Fear,” presented at 7:30 AM on KSBI Sundays on The Exchange, Where Faith and Science Meet.

October 21 & November 185:30 PM

October’s PINT will be at: The Pump Bar

November’s PINT will be at: The Rockford (on 23rd Street)

Adult Bible Study: The theme for the fall quarter of study is God’s sovereignty. During these thirteen weeks we will explore images from the authors of Isaiah, Hebrews, and Revelation to discern the sovereign nature of God.

We’re examining Isaiah’s rich images of God as the one who rules the whole universe. The Sovereignty of Jesus through images of the reign of the resurrected Christ found in the Letter to the Hebrews. And finally, the Alpha and Omega metaphors in Revelation of one who makes all things new.

Join us in the Library upstairs. For more details contact Gil Mitchell (820-5150).

Adventurers Class: Comprised of adults ages 40 and over, the Adventurers meet downstairs in room LL30. Genesis Class: This 50 and up singles class meets downstairs in LL28.

Adult Christian Education Classes

Sundays at 9:30 AM

You may purchase a Pew Bible for $35 to be used during worship and dedicate it in honor or in memory of a loved one.

New Pastor’s Class Begins October 2

The Fifth Gospel: Discovering the Bible’s Message

through the Lens of the LandThe Bible was written in a particular physical location, along with the ancient understanding of that geography. Since we live in a different part of the planet, and in a different time of understanding how nature works, we often miss the real and full meaning of the stories. In this Pastor’s Class, Dr. Paul Kirbas will lift up Biblical stories in which the land and the time impacted the meaning of the text. We will view the land as a kind of “Fifth Gospel”, in which a deeper revelation is offered by considering the dirt from which the Bible blossomed. Join us as we read another Gospel, the Fifth Gospel, and see the Bible’s message through the lens of the land!

Downtown Bible Study We have started a new downtown Bible study on Fridays at noon. It is a brown bag lunch program held at the offices of McAfee and Taft, on the 8th floor of Two Leadership Square at 211 North Robinson Street. Rev. Dr. Paul Kirbas is leading this group through a study of the New Testament book of James. If you would like to attend, please contact John Kenney at:

[email protected]

Tuesday Morning Men’s Breakfast

All men are invited to our Men’s Breakfast held in room LL29. Once again, we will be led by Pastor Paul Kirbas. We begin with a hearty breakfast at 7:30 AM, followed by our lesson. We aim to end by 8:30 AM. This fall, Paul will lead us in a study on the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. This summer, the General Assembly of the PCUSA asked for a study of the BDS movement (Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions). This men’s study will put that in perspective as we look at the long and complicated relationship between these two populations. All men are invited!

Greetings!

I love autumn. I think partly it is because I grew up in the mid-west and always marveled at how beautiful the hardwood forests transformed from hues of green to a brilliance of red, orange, and yellow. I loved how the heat of summer would fade into the pleasant coolness of a fall day and how children delighted in pumpkins, candy, and costumes. Especially, I loved thanksgiving as family and friends gathered to share in the holiday meal. While distance now separates me from the mid-west, I take these past memories and all the fondness wrapped within and celebrate that I see God’s handy work ever-present in the ordinary and the extraordinary, in the mundane routine of our lives and within both celebrations and milestones. Fall is a wonderful time to not only notice God’s handy work in the world, but also respond by getting involved as we transition from summertime to harvest and the preparation for the Advent Season. Please read below regarding many ways that we as a community, can engage in developing spirituality, building Christian relationships, and serving others. Please join us this fall in our many ministries that strive to enrich our congregational care, outreach, and discipleship. If you have questions or want to learn more – please contact me at [email protected]

Pastor’s Class – Watch for the LightThis Advent Season join the Pastor’s Class to explore how advent expectation becomes more and more essential in a world focused on commercial wants instead of being grounded in the spiritual focus towards “waiting in the dark” coupled with the lasting promise of Advent as the church prepares for the coming of Christ, our Light to the world. Come learn how Advent is not a season for passive waiting and watching but rather it is a season filled with longing and yearning, and of opening our lives and our souls with active anticipation and renewed hope.

PASTOR EMPHASIS

CDCCommitted Staff

The WCDC is so proud of our committed staff! Ms. Bridget (13 years with the WCDC), Ms. Brandi (12 years with the WCDC) and Ms. Kristen (11 years with the WCDC) all received scholarships to continue their educations in early childhood. We are so blessed to have such a wonderful and long term staff working for the Westminster Child Development Center. The funds received from our upcoming Christmas Auction make these scholarships possible. Please consider a donation and make plans to attend this fun event.

We are also preparing the children for a busy Fall Season! Trick-or-treating on October 27th, 2016, in the Church will be a fun time to see all the kids in their costumes. We will also begin preparing for the WCDC Christmas Program on December 16th, 2016.

Save The DateNovember 1, 2016

The Christmas Season will be upon us before we know it. Each year a silent auction is held at the Christmas dinner and the proceeds go to support our program. Some of the proceeds have gone for teacher education, new walkie-talkies to improve safety, communication and learning materials for the children. If you or someone you know would like to contribute an item to the auction like tickets to sporting events, vacation homes, golf outings, gift certificates or business services, we would appreciate any donation. We also would love to have volunteers as this is a big project! If you are interested, please contact us at 405-524-7120 or [email protected].

NOVEMBER CALENDAR

SPARK (Support Program of Art and Reading for Kids) is back in full swing, with an enrollment of 21 first – third grade students from Horace Mann Elementary School. Most of the children are either Burmese or Hispanic, and many come from non-English speaking homes.

Our SPARK program has been serving neighborhood children since 1992. Children selected must meet at least one criteria: reading below grade level or financial need, and it is taken into consideration if they are being raised by a single parent or grandparents. Funded by inclusion in the church budget and donations, there is no cost to the families involved.

Due to the staggered bus schedule for some OKC schools, our meeting hours this year are from 4:00 – 6:00 pm, Monday through Wednesday. Children receive one on one

tutoring every day . Throughout the week they also may participate in art, Bible study, music, recreation, dance, and Kids’ Café, where they prepare a portion of their dinner. The children are also served a snack and dinner each day which are made possible by our volunteer cooks.

We couldn’t function without our faithful 21 volunteer tutors, who give us 1 ½ hours of their time each week. Our tutor list is full at the current time, but we always need volunteers for the tutoring sub list. Contact Jody McLain to sign up (478-4740).

Being a volunteer at SPARK is one of the most rewarding and fun things you can do. SPARK is much more than homework and reading skills. Close mentoring relationships are formed, where children are nurtured and given encouragement and support. Feel free

to come over to the SPARK House (located on NW 43rd adjacent to the parking lot) to see for yourself what SPARK is all about!
