WCTA Welcomes U.S. Senator Joni ErnstIt’s been an exciting past few months here at WCTA

with all the fiber construction, new employees, and community events happening, but in late October we had an extra special guest visit our office to chat about rural fiber development.

We welcomed U.S. Senator Joni Ernst to Lake Mills. She was given the full tour of our networking center and our main business office. General Manager Mark Thoma explained that he wanted to take the opportunity to showcase for Ernst what WCTA does as a small business in a rural area as well as our work in economic development. “I am amazed at the technology (fiber vs. copper) and what is being provided here in rural Iowa,” she said, noting that in her part of the state they must rely on satellite service for internet. “I wish you guys (WCTA) were down in my area.” She commended WCTA for providing services in areas that larger carriers would ignore. “I am committed to strengthening rural communities and making sure that we have broadband available,” she said. “I understand that there are challenges out there, and we want to do what we can to make rural communities remain viable.” She added that this is certainly a role in which she believes the Federal government can be a key player. “Federal government has a role in infrastructure because people cannot build roads, bridges or technology for themselves.”

WCTA was very grateful for her visit to our offices. We look forward to continuing our relationship with the Senator’s office and providing cutting edge fiber services to our local communities.

Bancroft and Lakota Open Houses

WCTA General Manager Mark Thoma explains the benefits of fiber-optic cable to U.S. Senator Joni Ernst.

With the introduction of two new communities to our service area, Bancroft and Lakota, WCTA held an open house in each town to get to know the community members better. In Bancroft, WCTA met with community members at the Bancroft Summit Center, and in Lakota we met at the Eagle Center. Thankfully, the local hometown grocery store, Hagar Foods, was willing to bake cookies for both open houses! We want to thank those that came out, and to the Summit Center and Eagle Center for hosting WCTA. (566-3575)

New EmployeesTravis Tegland has been hired as an Outside Plant Technician.

Travis’s responsibilities as a technician include installing telecommunications services, broadband Internet, and digital TV service and helping customers resolve issues they may have with WCTA services. (568-3553)

Travis was born, raised, and still lives in rural Forest City with his wife, Krista, and sons, Ryker and Liam. In his free time, Travis enjoys outdoor activities and spending time with his family.

Heather Buhmann is our new Customer Service Representative.

As part of her daily duties, Heather will be assisting WCTA members with payments, service needs, and general customer service issues.

Heather is a native of Adams, Minnesota and now lives in Scarville with her husband, Andy, and daughter, Kennedy. In her spare time, she enjoys camping, reading, and spending time with her family.

Heading South for the Winter? Members who head south for the winter may want to consider placing their WCTA phone service on “Vacation

Service.” When on vacation service, your telephone is placed into a suspended mode that assures you will receive the same telephone number when you return in the spring and that your listing remains in the WCTA Directory. Plus, with vacation service you receive several discounts.

Vacation services are available for a minimum of one month and a maximum of 11 months.

When you’re heading back to your home, give the WCTA Business Office a call a week or so before you arrive and we will restore your services. (584-2039)

Winter Travel Tips As much as we don’t like to admit it, the winter travel season is upon us. Staying home during bad weather is

the #1 way to avoid problems but we can’t always do that. Here are a few tips to help keep you safe this winter.

First, be prepared. Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle. A sample list can be seen below. Having a few simple things with you can make a big difference. (852-3711)

Second, check the forecast and road conditions before traveling. Most states have websites that will display road conditions. The Iowa and Minnesota sites are listed below. Iowa – www.511ia.org Minnesota – www.511mn.org

Third, be careful. Make sure that you clear snow and ice from all windows as well as from your lights and license plates. Travel only as fast as conditions allow.

Finally, use common sense. If the weather is too bad for travel, stay home.
