by Katherine BushThe Caloosa Humane Society greatly

needs the community’s help this coming year. The last few years have been rough as they have for us all. The Society just created two new cat rooms replacing cages with large play areas where visitors can see how the felines interact with one another and with people. When one enters the room the cute furry critters surround them and “attack” with love and affection. Before the new rooms were built, the cats would hide in the corner of their cage, ears peeking out from the litter box - scared and alone. Now they jump and play and nuzzle your cheek. The hardest pets for volunteers to fi nd per-manent homes for are cats as well as large black dogs. The prices for adopting these animals are very affordable considering you get a friend for the rest of their nine lives.

I took a moment to speak with the very lovely and big hearted executive director Su-zanne Bonnell about this facility. Suzanne said the facility at 1200 Pratt Boulevard

opened in 2001. She has watched and waited faithfully as funding has dropped 46 percent. She has been just getting by on supplies and volunteers and would love more help. Most urgently needed are volunteers to sit with the animals, walk them and interact with them so they can get socialized to people and be easier to fi nd a home for. The sup-plies needed the most and right at this mo-ment are laundry soap, bleach, clay cat litter, cat toys, dog and cat food. I asked her what the most enjoyable part of her job is and she replied, “Watching them go home.” I also asked what the hardest part is, “Not watch-ing them go home,” she answers, shaking her head as the pain behind her eyes seeps out. This year 288 pets were euthanized due to health or behavioral issues that prevented them from being adopted. Suzanne wants the community to know, “There is no such thing as a no kill shelter; if they fi nd an un-adoptable pet they send it to another shelter that does euthanize.”

Technology is helping more pets fi nd

homes. Since the society went online, adop-tions have gone up 45 percent. Check the Web site at (www.petfi nder.com , www.pettango.com, www.myspace.com & www.facebook.com search under Caloosa Hu-mane Society). At www.petfi nder.com you can sponsor an animal, but sadly the site has not had any donations in the last 8 to 10 months.

Pets will even be sent to good homes if one cannot be found in the community the pet was located in. They are also accepting donations directly through www.Facebook’s causes application titled Clementine’s Fur-ry Friends Fund; created only last month by Gioia Bruno of the group Expose. She named the fund after her rescued dog. If one donates through this site all the proceeds go directly to the animals of the Caloosa Hu-mane Society.

If one donates to the larger well known societies very little, if any of these funds see their way to Suzanne. We all know it takes money to make money, and the large animal societies spend money to make touching commercials to get more people to donate. This shelter alone has taken in 784 animals this year and has transferred or found homes for 496 of them. Despite funds being cut and more animals to process, adoptions went up. We don’t need a calculator to see more animals means a need for more pet supplies and volunteers.

At this present moment this shelter can only accept cash or checks but Suzanne’s goal for next year is the means to accept

credit cards as well. Hours are 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Tues-Fri, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Sat.

They have a huge booth planned for the Swamp Cabbage Festival with a motorcycle poker run, a horseback poker run and pet photography.

This shelter offers all types of pets to fi ll your needs and make the perfect compan-ion. They adopt cats, dogs, horses, rabbits, ferrets and even reptiles on the off chance they get one in.

I took my work home with me in the form of at two-year-old, long hair black fe-male cat. Her name is Buffy and she’s hap-pily adapting to her new home. Every night that I come home to her, I cannot help but wonder who could have ever let her go; I know I never will.

2) Social Security number on original So-cial Security card; W-2 form; paycheck; DD-214; school record; or documentation from the IRS; and

3) two items of residential address. The address on a driver’s license can no longer be a post offi ce box. Bring two proofs of res-idential address (deed, mortgage, monthly mortgage payment booklet or rental agree-ment; Florida voter registration card or title; W-2 form or 1099 form; utility bill, hookup or work order not more than two months old, current auto or homeowner’s insurance policy or bill; mail from fi nancial institutions not more than two months old; letter from a shelter or half-way house verifying that ap-plicant lives at the address; educational tran-scripts for current school year; or statement from an accompanying parent, step-parent or guardian residing at the same address as applicant. The parent or guardian must present proof of residential address.

Florida residents obtaining a new license, replacing a lost/stolen card or changing their name prior to their renewal date should visit an issuing offi ce with new forms of docu-

mentation ready for processing. These rules will take effect for you when-

ever you make your next regularly sched-uled in-person visit to renew your license.

Floridians looking to renew a driver li-cense are allowed to do so by Internet or mail up to one time. Most people will still have the option to renew their license by mail or online every other time it expires. Eventually, the state will send you a letter that says you must go to an offi ce in person with the four documents.

If Florida drivers and ID card holders do not visit a driver license offi ce by Dec. 1, 2014 and Dec. 1, 2017 (depending on their birthday) and present required documenta-tion for their new card, they will not be al-lowed to board a commercial fl ight or enter a federal building.

Visit the campaign Web site - GatherGo-Get.com - and create a personalized check-list of documents needed to obtain their new driver license or identifi cation card. Call before you go to the Driver’s License Offi ce, 674-4022 Tuesday through Friday from 7 a.m.-6 p.m. for questions or appointments.

Moving onThe Hendry County Sheriff’s Offi ce has lost 20 years of experience now that Mary Radcliff has retired as a dispatcher. Mary started as an auxiliary offi cer in 1988 and went into dispatch in 1989 where she remained for the rest of her employment. Sheriff Steve Whidden said that Mary trained many, many of the department’s dispatchers over the years. She will be moving to South Carolina to be closer to family. Mary said she truly loved dispatch but is glad to be mov-ing on. Members of the department gathered Dec. 18 to wish Mary well on her new life. She was presented with a plaque, letter, pin and sheriff’s star at her retirement party.

February 5, 2009One hundred walkers participated in

Lucy’s Angels for Breast Care walkathon Jan. 31. The group raises money to pay for mammograms for residents of Hendry and Glades. To date, the group had paid for over 70 mammograms.

Serving in the National Guard, Freddy Herrera returned from the 44th Presidential Inauguration with a greater appreciation for his country and of his role in its protection. He was chosen for the honor from among his comrades with the 806 MP Company at Fort Pierce. He said the crowd showed great respect for them and even clapped as they came and went from the Mall.

Sgt. Herrera graduated from LaBelle High School and is employed by A. Duda & Sons.

February 12, 2009Late Sunday night, Feb. 8, the Kiwanis

Thrift Store was gutted by a fi re that ap-peared to have been deliberately set. Local fi refi ghters confi rmed that the fi re was actu-ally kindled at three different points in the building. The building sustained major fi re damage and smoke damage throughout, but there was no serious structural dam-age.

Law enforcement and emergency per-sonnel rallied in their unanimous support of the family of Sgt. Michael Lee Horne as they laid him to rest Feb. 4, at Fort Denaud Cemetery. It was a solemn and impressive full law enforcement funeral, Sgt. Horne’s family, including his two young daughters.

LaBelle’s very own Miss Ashley Pittman was crowned Miss Hendry County for 2009 at the Hendry County Fair Feb. 6, in Clewis-ton. A senior at LaBelle High School, the new Miss Hendry County is the daughter of Ray and Maggie Pittman.

February 19, 2009LaBelle water and sewer customers

could expect to be digging a little bit deeper into their pockets to pay for utilities. At their Feb. 12 regular meeting City Commissioners heard staff recommendations for utility rate hikes.

Average rates would go from $54.49

a month for water and sewer services to $57.92, based on a 6,000 gallon consump-tion model. If you live outside of the city limits, your bill for that amount would in-crease to $32.67 for water only. The city does not provide any sewer services outside its boundaries.

March 5, 2009On Friday, February 20, Goodwill Indus-

tries of Southwest Florida broke ground on “Palmetto Ranch,” a 14-unit apartment complex for people with developmental disabilities. The housing complex would be located near the intersection of James Singleton Place and State Road 80.

The actual site construction was already underway, and workers continued to lay foundation and build stem-walls as the cere-monial ground breaking took place nearby.

Concerned Citizens of the Glades, Inc. unveiled the results of a statewide poll re-garding the proposed U.S. Sugar buyout.

Questions were being asked about the proposed sale of USSC property to the state. A statewide poll found that 60 percent agree with opponents that spending $1.3 billion was not a top priority now given the state’s fi nancial situation, 61 percent felt that wait-ing would produce a better deal and 64 per-cent felt the time is not right given the state of the nation’s economy.

A majority of state voters (62 percent) said they had heard little or nothing about the deal, and when given additional argu-ments from both sides, opposition to the plan increased.

March 12, 2009A LaBelle man was found guilty on all

counts of producing and possessing child pornography and tampering with a witness during a federal trial. Sentencing before U.S. District Judge John Steele was scheduled for June.

Following a presentation by an expert in the economic development fi eld, county commissioners reconsidered their earlier decision to withdraw funding of Hendry’s Economic Development Council. Commis-sioners recognized the efforts of the EDC board and the staff, which continued op-erating despite the crippling decision last year.

The commissioners factored the state of the economy and decreases in operating dollars in removing the funding, but deter-mined it was more important than ever to have a fully functioning EDC.

One of the largest cat rescues in US histo-ry came to an end Dec. 21, after the closure of a rural South Florida cat sanctuary led to the transfer of hundreds of thin and diseased cats to other agencies for rehabilitation.

Following a citizen’s complaint regarding conditions at the sanctuary, a team of ani-mal cruelty experts from the American Soci-ety for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the Humane Society of the United States and the University of Florida Shelter Medi-cine Program accompanied LaBelle Animal Control Director Doug Morgan on a surprise inspection of the facility on Nov. 16.

After confronting sanctuary owner Mau-ry Swee that unacceptable conditions at the sanctuary resulted in a high rate of illness and death among the cats, he stated that he was unable to make improvements and had insuffi cient resources to continue operating. The following day Swee relinquished all of the cats and closed the sanctuary. An animal cruelty investigation is ongoing.

Thirteen critically ill, suffering cats were immediately euthanized and submitted to the state’s Animal Disease Diagnostic Lab-oratory in Kissimmee where necropsies revealed the emaciated cats suffered from severe anemia, infections and organ failure brought on by parasitism, malnutrition and untreated diseases. Swee said none of the cats had received veterinary care for their illnesses.

Morgan immediately recruited an in-teragency team of specialized volunteer responders from across Florida to help the nearly 600 cats remaining. Responding agencies included experts in disaster ani-mal sheltering led by the Bay Area Disaster Animal Response Team (DART), animal cru-elty investigation led by the ASPCA Crime Scene Investigation Unit and animal triage and medical care led by the University of Florida’s Veterinary Emergency Treatment Service and Maddie’s Shelter Medicine Pro-gram.

Over three days beginning Nov. 23, the UF Shelter Medicine Program led a team of veterinarians, veterinary students and tech-nicians in a triage operation to examine each cat, collect forensic documentation, test for feline leukemia virus, feline immu-nodefi ciency virus and heartworms, implant identifi cation microchips and treat for inter-nal and external parasites. During this initial phase 93 cats were identifi ed by the veteri-nary team as having severe illness. It was de-

termined that the most humane choice for these cats was humane euthanasia.

Volunteers from Bay Area DART remained on site to assist LaBelle Animal Control with the disposition of the remaining cats. Cat owners were given a chance to reclaim ani-mals they relinquished to the sanctuary, to transfer cats to shelters and rescue groups throughout the southeast and for the public to adopt unclaimed cats. While the sanctu-ary owner did not make information avail-able regarding who originally relinquished the cats, he was asked to personally contact former cat owners to give them an oppor-tunity to reclaim their cats. “We were heart-ened by the response from so many humane agencies,” said Connie Brooks, Operations Director of SPCA Tampa bay/Bay area DART. “Even though infectious diseases were ram-pant throughout this facility and about half of the cats were feral, we were able to trans-fer the vast majority to other agencies. The entire humane community pulled together to create a happy ending for this sad story.”

Five cats were fl own to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Utah for treatment of advanced medical conditions, the furthest distance. The largest transfer, 46 cats, went to Animal Refuge Center in Ft. Myers. Each agency received a thorough background and reference check to assure that the cats would not be transferred from one unac-ceptable situation to another.

“The vast majority of cats sent to this sanctuary died within a few years of arrival and many of the survivors had substantial medical conditions and carried multiple in-fectious diseases,” Morgan said. “Some had even arrived as victims of previous cruelty and hoarding investigations. We knew we had to be sure these cats were going to new placements that were prepared to provide for their special needs.”

The cat rescue project was made possi-ble by more than $40,000 in grants and free diagnostic testing services, cat food, litter, crates and other supplies from IDEXX Labo-ratories, Petsmart Charities, ASPCA, HSUS and private donors. Thousands of volunteer hours were expended. After more than four weeks, the interagency task force had exhausted all leads for cat placements. The fi nal statistics tell a story of success and sad-ness. The closure of the 10th Life Sanctuary represents one of the largest cat rescues in US history. A total of 110 cats were eutha-nized in the fi rst days of medical triage due

to critical medical illnesses, including 17 that were euthanized immediately following the unannounced inspection. Of the remaining 485 cats, 75 of the ferals were euthanized when new placements could not be found for them. This 15 percent euthanasia rate

for the savable cats is in stark contrast to the vast majority of large-scale feline cruelty impoundments in which mass euthanasia is the most common outcome.

Teen Court gives back!It was another exciting night at Teen

Court on Dec. 15, 2009. Our high school stu-dents took on the challenge of fulfi lling new roles as defense and prosecuting attorneys. The peer jury handed down appropriate and constructive sentences that will certainly help the defendants to learn from their ex-periences. Thanks to all the adult volunteers who took the time to coach the teens and help to sharpen their skills. The highlight of the night’s proceedings was the presenta-tions of four boxes and a bag of groceries to a family in LaBelle, to ensure that they will celebrate a special Christmas this year. It was such a thrill to have the family visit with us and for the teens and adults to contribute food and household items as a tangible way to give back to the community. The Teen Court program looks forward to continuing its important role in the juvenile justice sys-tem as we work together to make an impact among the youth in Hendry County.

Healing WatersHealing Waters Family Life Center desires

to sincerely thank the greater community of LaBelle for your support of our drive-thru Nativity. Your attendance to our Christmas ministry vastly exceeded our expectations and your comments blessed our hearts as much as you were blessed by our efforts. Legion Christmas dinnerA very big Thank You to everyone in-

volved with the Christmas Dinners provided

by The American Legion of LaBelle. Over 500 dinners were delivered or picked up. Thank you to the companies and organiza-tions who donated most of the food and to those who made a monetary donation. This would not have been possible without the community support. Thank you to the Aux-iliary ladies who baked cakes, those who cut veggies and others who prepared and cooked the traditional Christmas Dinner.

Early Christmas morning found the Le-gion men busy in the kitchen. Volunteers began swarming in to help with the fi nal preparation. It is absolutely amazing to see the entire process come together with so much coordination. The cakes all being cut and boxed, salads boxed, the serving line preparing each dinner, adding a roll and a candy cane for good cheer. The dinners were boxed so they could be sent on their routes. Thank you to the drivers who made the personal deliveries and spread Christmas cheer. After the fi nal dinners were on their way, the volunteers took time to rejoice and clean-up. It was a very busy and rewarding Christmas morning.

With over 100 volunteers, it is not pos-sible to thank just a few. It was a wonderful team effort. May you all have a Happy and Blessed New Year.

March 19, 2009The Hendry County Board of Commis-

sioners were considering a proposal to enact a juvenile curfew ordinance to curb, among other issues, gang activity. Recent events throughout the county, and especially in the Clewiston area, had leaders worrying whether shootings could spill out into other areas, or worsen.

LaBelle’s own Margaret England received the fi rst ever South Florida Water Manage-ment District “Ambassador Award” for her work on Stormwater Treatment Area 5.

March 26, 2009Homeland Security regulations were be-

ing felt all over including Hendry County. Proof of your residential address and of your social security number became necessary when you appear at the Division of Motor Vehicles for a license.

April 2, 2009Last week LaBelle celebrated the life of

Ida Corine Forrey Lofton Kirby, a lady who had touched the lives of almost everyone in town for 91 years. She died March 24, 2009, under hospice care. She and her sisters, Flo-ra, Ella and Mary, were born to pioneers Mel-ville and Corine Forrey. “Miss Ida” had been LaBelle’s unoffi cial grand dame for decades. She loved people and made it her calling to be wherever they gathered, camera in hand, in support of her beloved LaBelle. Perhaps that is how she is best remembered.

Hendry County Commissioner Kevin McCarthy urged his fellow commissioners to put their efforts behind selling Hendry County as the best site for the proposed in-land port. “It makes the most sense,” he told his fellow commissioners at their March 26 meeting.

April 9, 2009Kiwanis was planning on opening its

doors, Tuesday, April 14, at 9 a.m. They were only able to open portions of the store at this time, but were planning on a full recovery within a few months.

Eighth grader Brian DiBernardino. Nancy and Brian DiBernardino and Maureen Mc-Cormick got the tickets to hear President Obama speak in Fort Myers and even got the chance to shake the President’s hand! Bri-an’s reaction to this bit of history: “I could not believe it! I shook hands with the Presi-dent of the United States, the most powerful man in the country. It was maybe my once in a lifetime chance to see the President and all I have to say is that it was all worth it.”

April 16, 2009The 2009 Little Miss LaBelle Pageant was

held Saturday, April 4, sponsored by the Ca-loosahtchee Charter Chapter of the Ameri-can Business Women’s Association. Win-ners were: Little Miss LaBelle Cassidy Wills, Junior Miss Jasmine Craft and Little Miss Princess Victoria Pagan.

April 23, 2009LaBelle lost another of its most beloved

friends. Tully F. Dunlap died April 11, 2009, less than two months after his beloved wife of almost 70 years, the former Mary D. Miller, passed away in Oakbrook Nursing Home. Tully lived 92 years, a lifetime he fi lled with service to others. Tully and Mary moved to LaBelle in 1986, in love with LaBelle after visiting on weekends since 1972.

May 7, 2009Countywide recycling was in the near

future. At its April 28 meeting, the Board of County Commissioners asked County At-torney Mark Lapp to revisit the solid waste franchise ordinance, which has not been looked at in 29 years. The Solid Waste Ad-visory Committee was recommending pick up changes including one day a week for household waste, one day for recycling and one day for yard waste.

May 14, 2009Just keeping up some 14 parks was a

challenge. New Hendry-LaBelle Rec Director Ramiro Rodriguez had the job since Febru-ary, taking over when long-time director Phill Pelletier was elected property appraiser.

Coming to LaBelle from Immokalee in 1967, Ramiro graduated from LHS in 1976. Always active on the sports scene, Ramiro has spent many hours at LaBelle parks coaching both Pop Warner and soccer teams. He says he’s always been involved with kids and the community.

Your family could host a foreign exchange student

EF Foundation for Foreign Study, a non-profi t organization that works with students from other countries who want to improve their English and travel abroad, is looking to place a group of students ages 15-17 years, with volunteer host families.

The students would attend LaBelle High School and become a part of your family and community for 6-12 months.

These students are coming to America to improve their English language skills and to experience American family life.

Although we are already working on plac-ing students for next school year we have a few arriving for 6 months in January who still need families assigned ASAP!

If you think you might be interested please call and discuss this with Laura Barry

The Immokalee Pioneer Museum is the showcase for Immokalee’s rich history and also its natural beauty. For the next several weeks, you have the opportunity to revel in some of the most beautiful local photogra-phy you will ever see.

The photographic exhibit is mainly the work of three local photographers: Karen Hendry, Bobby Holland and Richard Tillis.

Many of the photos were taken on the Bruce Hendry Ranch property southeast of Immokalee. These photos will remind us all of the natural beauty that has surrounded Immokalee for eons - and that still does.

In addition to these photos, the display case is fi lled with ancient relics of extinct an-imals that once roamed this area. The Tillis

family of Hendry County is graciously allow-ing its collection of bones discovered several years ago on the Tribritton property to be included in this unique exhibit.

The exhibition, which opened Dec. 7, will remain at the museum till Jan. 29, so there is ample time to get there. It is being sponsored by the Hendry Foundation, a con-servation organization involved in wildlife habitat preservation in southwest Florida.

After that a cowboy photo exhibit will open there on Feb 1.

Before that, however, the Collier County Agriculture Department will host AgVenture Day on Jan. 21 with displays and stations like a simulated milker, live horses and growing stations.

The Immokalee Pioneer Museum is the site of the original Roberts Family home-stead, and preserves the old family home,

several outbuildings and a church. It is locat-

ed at 1215 Roberts Ave. Museum hours are

Monday through Friday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Call 239-658-2466 for more information.

Photo exhibit mirrors area’s natural harmony

Caloosa Belle/Patty BrantThis display offers an overview of artifacts found on Tribritton property off Keri Road in Hen-dry County. The Tillis Family is graciously allowing the artifacts to be exhibited in Immokalee through the month of January. The exhibit is at the Immokalee Pioneer Museum, 1215 Roberts Ave. in Immokalee.

Caloosa Belle/Patty BrantThe remains of extinct creatures large and small discovered at Tribritton off Keri Road and owned by the Tillis Family of Hendry County may be seen in the current exhibit at Immokalee PIoneer Museum at the old Roberts Ranch. The exhibit will be open through January.

Binocular brigades may be seen in region

Join volunteers for the 3rd annual Christ-mas Bird Count at STA5 and the surrounding 15 mile area organized by Hendry-Glades Audubon on Saturday Jan. 2, 2010. Teams will begin at 7 a.m. Participants may help for half to full day. The post count event will be held in Clewiston. For information contact Margaret England 863-674-0695 or [email protected].

The longest running Citizen Science survey in the world, Audubon’s annual Christmas Bird Count (CBC) will take place between Dec. 14, and Jan. 5, 2010. From Alaska to Antarctica, tens of thousands of volunteers will add a new layer to over a century of data vital to conservation. Armed with binoculars, several local volunteers will join this Citizen Science initiative to count birds in our region.

Scientists rely on these data to better un-derstand how birds and the environment we share are faring. Just like canaries in the coal mine, birds serve as early indicators of problems that can eventually affect people and wildlife. Data from Audubon are at the heart of several scientifi c reports. CBC data

informed the fi rst U. S State of the Birds Re-port, issued earlier this year by the Depart-ment of the Interior. CBC analysis also fueled Audubon’s report that Climate Change is al-ready having an impact on birds across the continent.

The Christmas Bird Count began in 1900 when the founder of Bird-Lore (the progeni-tor of Audubon magazine), Frank Chapman, suggested an alternative to the “side hunt,” in which teams competed to see who could shoot the most game, including birds. Chap-man proposed that people “hunt” birds only to identify, count, and record them. These Binocular Brigades often brave winter’s chill, ice and snow to record changes in resi-dent populations and ranges.

“When Frank Chapman started the Christmas Bird Census, it was a visionary act,” said Audubon President John Flicker. “No one could have predicted how impor-tant the CBC would become as a resource and tool for conservation.” CBC data also help document success stories. The Christ-mas Bird Count helped document the come-back of the previously endangered Bald Eagle, and signifi cant increases in waterfowl populations, both the result of conservation efforts.

“Each CBC volunteer observer is an im-

portant contributor, helping to shape the overall direction of bird conservation,” says Geoff LeBaron, Audubon’s Christmas Bird Count Director. To interview a local volun-teer, please contact us.

Architect and Edison State College pro-fessor Albert Dambrose’s latest design proj-ect is in developing ‘Green Education’.

“We would like students to graduate from our Drafting and Design program with a vari-ety of skills that will make them more com-petitive in the workforce,” said Dambrose. “Green (Sustainable) Design and Construc-tion is an emerging sector of our economy that continues to expand.

“As an educational institute, we are al-ways striving to teach our students the new concepts, tools and technology that will al-low them to be successful in their careers.”

To infuse the Department of Professional

and Technical Studies curriculum with the latest information in sustainability, Dam-brose and a team at Edison State College ap-plied for and was awarded one of the most highly coveted and competitive grants in the green fi eld.

The National Science Foundation award-ed Edison State College a $150,000 grant to support Dambrose’s proposal, “Green Building and Alternative Energy Curriculum Infusion.”

Edison State College understands the need to train new generations of workers to ‘think green’.

According to the United States Green

Building Council (USGBC), buildings in the United States are responsible for 39 percent of CO2 emissions, 40 percent of energy con-sumption, 13 percent water consumption and 15 percent of GDP per year, making ‘green building’ a source of signifi cant eco-nomic and environmental opportunity.

Greater building effi ciency can meet 85 percent of future U.S. demand for energy, and a national commitment to green build-ing has the potential to generate 2.5 million American jobs.

Edison State graduates will be well-qual-ifi ed to earn one of these 2.5 million jobs,” said Dennette Foy, Associate Dean of Profes-

sional and Technical Studies at Edison State College.

“This grant will help the College as a whole because it will allow Edison State to become a working research lab on sustain-able topics.”

Edison State College also plans to partner with local professional associations.

The grant will be used in part to obtain the newest software and technology used in sustainable design.

Dambrose’s ultimate goal is for graduates of his program: Earning a LEED Green AP accreditation from the United States Green Building Council (USGBC).

“Green Education’ to be part of Edison State College curriculum

TALLAHASSEE – Florida CFO and State Fire Marshal Alex Sink today announced precautions to take this holiday season, en-couraging Floridians to protect themselves and their families with proactive fi re safety measures. Each year fi res occurring during the holiday season claim the lives of over 400 Americans, injure 1,650 more, and cause over $990 million in damage accord-ing to the U.S. Fire Administration.

To view a video of CFO Sink’s com-

ments from her press conference on holiday fi re safety, visit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRFv2C3OHVU.

-- Dry Christmas trees are dangerous fi re hazards -- make sure you buy a fresh tree with needles that are green and hard to pull back from the branches.

-- Do not place your tree close to a heat source, including a fi replace or heat vent. The heat will dry out the tree, causing it to be more easily ignited by heat, fl ame or sparks.

-- Do not put your live tree up too early or leave it up for longer than two weeks, and make sure you keep the tree stand fi lled with water at all times.

-- Inspect holiday lights each year for frayed wires, bare spots, gaps in the insula-tion, broken or cracked sockets, and exces-sive kinking or wear before putting them up.

-- Do not overload electrical outlets or link more than three light strands. Make sure to

periodically check the wires - they should not be warm to the touch.

-- All decorations should be nonfl am-mable or fl ame-retardant and placed away from heat vents.

-- Avoid using lit candles, but if you do use them, make sure they are in stable hold-ers and place them where they cannot be easily knocked down.

-- Never put lit candles on a tree or leave lit candles unattended.
