Tidbits has some lesser-known facts about one of life’s vital necessities – shut-eye! • When you’re asleep, your body may be resting but your brain certainly isn’t! It remains hard at work constantly giving orders to the body’s various systems to keep it breathing, pumping blood, and digesting. Short-term memories are recorded in the brain during sleep. Did you know that sleeping shortly after learning something new will actually improve your ability to remember it? • Rapid eye movement, or REM sleep, is char- acterized by rapid and random movement of the eyes and accounts for about 25% of a total night’s sleep, 90 to 120 minutes. Prior to that are stages of light sleep, when our eye movements stop and brain waves are extremely slow. The first period of REM occurs about 90 minutes after a person falls asleep and lasts about 10 minutes. A sleeper will experience about four or five periods of REM, with each lengthening toward morning. Brain activity is heightened, and this is the time of the most intense dreaming. • Sleep deprivation has numerous negative effects on the body’s functions and well-being. A recent Harvard study has tied insufficient or irregular sleep to an increased risk for colon cancer, Type 2 diabetes, and heart disease in those who slept TRIVIA & GAMES INSIDE! suresignisifittakesyoulessthanfiveminutesto fall asleep at night. The optimum amount of time is between 10 and 15 minutes. Other symptoms include irritability, nervousness, and inability to tolerate stress, and problems with concentration and memory. You mightalso notice blurred vision, hand tremors, or a change in appetite.

• Many children occasionally walk in theirsleep. Sleepwalking is ordinarily a phase in the growing-up process. Because parts of the child’s brain are immature, dreams can be stimulating enough to cause a youngster to take a nocturnal stroll. About 25 percent of all children have one or more sleepwalking episodes between the ages of 7 and 12,according to sleep researchers.

How do marine mammals such as dolphins andwhales manage to sleep withoutdrowning? Half their brain sleeps and handles the breathing and swimming chores. So they liter- ally sleep with one eye open. Dolphins swim in circles while they sleep with the eye on the outside of the circle open to watch for predators. After a while, they reverse and swim with the opposite eye open.

● It was noted wit Ambrose Bierce who made the following sage observa-tion: “All are lunatics, but he who can analyze his delusion is called a philoso-pher.”

● When the famous “Hollywood” sign was constructed in 1923, it read “Hol-lywoodland.” It was an advertisement for a new housing development and was expected to be in place only about a year and a half. The sign became such a recognizable symbol of the new film industry in Los Angeles that it has been repaired, refurbished and rebuilt as necessary for 90 years.

● In January of 2004, the Food and Drug Administration approved the use of maggots as a medical device for cleaning wounds.

● If you’re planning a trip to Laramie, Wyo., you might want to make a pil-grimage to the Ames Pyramid. At the end of a 2-mile dirt road, in the middle of featureless pastureland, you’ll find this 60-foot-tall monument seemingly plunked down at random. The pyra-mid was built in 1882 near a line of the Union Pacific railroad and in honor of the railroad’s financiers. It was thought that the monument would be a welcome distraction to railroad passengers trav-eling through the plains of Wyoming. The decline of railroad travel, however, caused many tracks to be removed, in-cluding the line that ran by the pyramid. Now only cows are left to ponder this deserted relic of the industrial age.

● The 1979 horror movie “Alien” has become a cult classic, but not many people realize that it was originally titled “Star Beast.” *** Thought for the Day: “Hollywood is a place where they’ll pay you a thousand dollars for a kiss and 50 cents for your soul. I know, because I turned down the first offer often enough and held out for the 50 cents.” -- Marilyn Monroe

If you’re a pescetarian, you are a vegetarian who eats all plant-based foods, dairy, eggs, andfish.

Some research shows that a vegetarian diet increases the body’s metabolism, enabling the body to burn calories at a faster rate than a meat-based diet.

This means that you pay no attorney’s fees unless your lawyer either negotiates a settlement with your approval or wins a judgement in court. This method of compensation makes legal representation available to many who otherwise could not afford it. It also means that if your case has merit, you can be well represented by a qualifi ed attorney.

Ask friends or attorneys you know for references of personal injury lawyers, or check with the California Bar Association. It’s the best way to fi nd an ethical, competent attorney with the trial experience it takes to bring your case to a fair conclusion. Beware of the promises and claims some attorneys make in their ads.

Q: I think I’ve read this question in your column before, but I can’t remember your answer. Will “China Beach” ever be released on DVD? I loved that series, and I wish I could watch it again. -- Beverly W., via e-mail

A: I’ve gotten scores of letters asking that same question, and I finally have a definitive answer for you: On Oct. 1, fans can at last own the critically acclaimed, Dana Delany-star ring hit series. For the show’s 25th anni-versary, the com-plete series will be available in a 21-disc collector’s set in stores and online. ***

Q: You mentioned a show set in the 1940s about the Mafia that was supposed to air on TNT called “Lost Angels,” but I can’t find mention of it anywhere. Can you help? -- Doug-las B. in Ohio

A: The latest TNT drama has been re-named “Mob City” and is set to premiere Dec. 4. The show centers on the epic battle between a de-termined police chief and a dangerous mobster that inflames 1940s Los Angeles, and stars Jon Bernthal, Neal McDonough and Ed Burns. ***

Q: Is “Poltergeist” being remade? -- Linley J., Harrisburg, Pa.

A: Details are sketchy about the new proj-ect, but I can tell you that an updated “Poltergeist” is in production, with Sam Rockwell in talks to co-star with Rosemarie DeWitt, according to “Variety.” * * * READERS: Our summer reading contest has come to a close, and I want to thank everyone who entered. One name was drawn at random to win an autographed copy of Rainbow Rowell’s critically acclaimed sophomore effort “Eleanor and Park.”

And that winner is Linda R. of The Villages, Florida. If you read my review of “Eleanor and Park” at www.celebrityextraonline.com, then you know I love the book, and why. I spoke with Rainbow about her feel-ings while writing it, and she told me: “With this book, I do remember saying that I wanted people to feel in their stomach that feeling of being in love for the first time. When you’re at that age where even if you’re not actually in love, you feel those feelings so deeply. I honestly think you have the capacity to feel love and infatuation and all of those feelings, to a much greater capacity when you’re that age -- that intense first love, like every cell in your body is part of it.” And if you want to explore more of Rainbow’s writings, her third book, “Fangirl,” was just released (check my website soon for my review). And while I don’t like to play favorites, I think I might like “Fan-girl” even more than “Eleanor and Park.”

Laptop Computer so Inexpen-sive You’ll Think it’s a Misprint You’ve heard it, and you may even believe it -- that you get what you pay for. While that may be true some of the time, it is definitely not some-thing you should believe across the board. There are times that you really can get a lot more than you pay for. I’m talking about Samsung’s laptop com-puter, Chromebook. The price on this baby has just dropped below $220. See? You think it’s a misprint, don’t you? It’s not. And yes, that two hundred and twenty dollars includes shipping. I’m not much of a techy, so let me describe this laptop to you the way I understand it. Think of an iPad with a built-in keyboard and touchpad. Weighing in at just 2.4 lbs., it is .07 inches thin, fast and absolutely does not heat up. With a full 11.6-inch screen, this computer and display are flat-out beautiful. The Samsung Chromebook is a great option for students of all ages who need a laptop to take to class every day. It’s perfect for writing papers, taking notes, creating documents, browsing the Internet, listening to music, managing photos, reading email, and even streaming Netflix. Though the Chromebook has a built-in word processor, for the person who is used to using Microsoft Office products, Microsoft has a service called Office365 (http://office365.microsoft.com/) that allows you to access Word and other services

directly through your browser. Samsung Chromebook starts in seconds, has virus protection built-in, and runs Google apps, which are available in the Chrome Web store. It comes loaded with leading Google products, such as Search, Gmail, YouTube and Hangouts, so you can work, play, and do whatever you want, right out of the box. Want to help someone with little comput-er knowledge to get online and computer literate? This would be a great laptop to start with because it is so simple to use. With Samsung’s Chromebook, there’s no setup, and your files are automatically backed up in the cloud. With over 6.5 hours of battery life, this laptop can go anywhere with you. It comes with 100GB of free Google Drive storage (for 2 years), a built-in webcam, and dual-band Wi-Fi to make it easy to connect to wireless networks. I can’t say enough nice things about this sweet little laptop computer. Who would have ever thought that a laptop computer like this Chrome-book could be this inexpensive? What next? A new laptop computer packed in every box of cereal? I can’t wait to see that! But in the meantime, a great laptop for $220 -- that comes with 12 free Gogo in-air Internet passes (did I mention that?) -- simply can’t be beat. I know you want one, and I wouldn’t doubt at all that you or someone you love really does need a Samsung Chromebook. But please take the time to check the specs and learn all about it by reading reviews and descriptions before you proceed to checkout. You can do that at Everyday-Cheapskate.com/chrome. And should you decide to go forward, prepare to be amazed!

Coffee Tastes Best with Tidbits!

VA Gobbledygook The title of the report by the Office of the In-spector General sounded interesting: Audit of Non-Purchase Card Micro-Purchases. The first thing I learned was that “micro” doesn’t necessarily mean small. A micro-purchase in the Department of Vet-erans Affairs is one that is less than $3,000. Last year, the Veterans Health Administration spent $3 billion on micro-purchases. Non-purchase cards were used, and those cards earn rebates. The audit was to learn if the Veterans Health Administration could increase efficiency and cost effectiveness with the non-pur-chase cards. What the OIG concluded was that medical facilities could have saved $20 million by using non-purchase cards. Out of 729,000 non-purchase card purchases, they missed 279,000 chances (38 per-cent) to get a rebate. That would have come to $4 million and could zoom to $133 million over the next five years. The OIG’s recommendation is that the VA Office of Management “establish policies and pro-cedures” to increase the use of non-purchase card micro-purchases. There were reasons for the non-use of the cards, the OIG says: use of vendors who didn’t take purchase cards, payments to veterans for tort claims and pharmacy co-payments. It’s possible, however, that the reason the non-purchase cards weren’t used can be found in the manual on the use of those cards. It says the spend-ing limit is $3,000 -- except for “acquisitions of con-struction,” which has a $2,000 limit. Or how about “acquisitions of services subject to the Service Con-tract Act,” which has a $2,500 limit. Or how about those purchases “established by FAR 2.101,” which has a $150,000 limit. What follows in the manual are many, many pages of details about the specifics of card use and the penalties for abuse. Given all that, I don’t know if I’d want to take a chance on using a non-purchase card either.

Freddy Groves regrets that he cannot personally an-swer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his col-umn whenever possible. Send email to [email protected].

Low-Down Dirty Pet-Flippers According to the Bible, the love of money is the root of all evil. According to Mark Twain, the lack of money is the root of all evil. For love or lack, people concoct some low-down dirty schemes in the name of the blessed dollar. One of the latest involves flipping pets. With not the slightest care for the anxiety and heartbreak that comes with a missing dog or cat -- a family member lost -- this particular brand of criminal steals lost dogs off of neighborhood streets or right out of the dog’s own yard and sells them for a quick buck on sites such as Craigslist. These crooks also scour “lost dog, found dog” sites, claim-ing a “found dog” as their own only to turn around and hock the pooch for anywhere from $50 to $1,000, depending on the popularity of the breed. NBC’s Today.com produced a story in Au-gust about this summer’s surge in pet flipping. A cute little schnauzer named Rosie went missing in Indianapolis, and so her owner, Leisa Waggoner, launched a search. She posted missing dog fliers and hit the lost dog sites. That’s where she found her Rosie -- already claimed by some poser. When Waggoner managed to locate and contact the con who had falsely claimed Rosie, the woman, Jennifer Dodd, attempted to extort a reward from Waggoner for Rosie’s return. Dodd was arrested and pleaded guilty to felony theft. And here’s the part that would get a “told ya so” from Twain: Dodd said she did it for cash to buy diapers for her kids, telling Today, “I’m a single mom. I have fraternal twins on the way, and I have a 1-year-old, and you know, the economy’s hard and stuff nowadays.” “Hard and stuff” or not, the need to support your family doesn’t justify the harming of another family. Ultimately, Dodd got caught because she’s a dolt who delivered her extortion note via text mes-sage. Most criminals aren’t the inept Virgil Stark-wells of Woody Allen’s “Take the Money and Run,” who flubbed his bank robbery arguing over the leg-ibility of his “holdup” note to the teller. And most aren’t as easily reformed as the lovable Virgil, who swooned, “After fifteen minutes I wanted to marry her, and after half an hour I completely gave up the idea of stealing her purse.”

Cardiac Rehabilitation Key to Life After Attack Until the early 1970s, people who survived a heart attack were admitted to the hospital, stayed in bed for two to three weeks -- not even allowed to use a bedside commode -- and then spent another three months in bed at home. The goal was to “rest the heart” and give it a chance to fully recover. Exercise was discour-aged, and many with heart disease were referred to as “cardiac cripples” -- reluctant to exert any energy and frightened of any rigorous movement. Their lives were miserable. How times have changed. Today, immedi-ately after the diagnosis of a heart attack, an angio-gram is performed to identify the extent of the heart attack; the blocked vessel is immediately opened and, in some circumstances, cardiac artery bypass surgery can be done within hours. The next day, patients are encouraged to begin movement, get out of bed as soon as possi-ble and are sent home within a few days. Similarly, patients admitted to the hospital with severe heart failure are encouraged to begin physical activity as soon after beginning treatment as possible. After being discharged to their homes, patients are advised to begin exercising, and many are referred for cardiac rehabilitation. These pro-grams involve supervised exercise programs, often under the guidance of a physical therapist. Reha-bilitation therapy is three times a week and involves a one-hour program of stretching, aerobic activity and a cool-down. In many rehabilitation programs, the patient’s heart is constantly monitored to as-sure that the rate does not increase excessively or become irregular. Sadly, less than 30 percent of patients referred for rehabilitation participate and even fewer complete the 12-week program. In addition to pa-tients who have had heart attacks and open-heart surgery, anyone who has developed increasing shortness of breath due to heart disease or heart failure should be considered a candidate for cardiac rehabilitation. New information published in the journal Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Associa-tion has shown that rehabilitation not only allows the heart to return to normal function more rapidly after exercise, but also doubles the chances of survival. In addition, cardiac rehabilitation improves quality of life and exercise capacity. Beginning with cardiac rehabilitation, patients who have had a heart attack can eventually become very active and even complete a marathon. This study followed 1,070 patients referred for cardiac rehabilitation; 75 percent were men, with an average age of 61. The most important mea-surement was determining how quickly the heart rate returned to normal after exercise. At the start, about 50 percent had an abnormal heart recovery rate after exercise. Even though diagnosed with significant heart disease, the recovery rate was normal in the remainder. In order to be defined as normal, the heart rate had to decrease by a mini-mum of 12 beats in the first minute after stopping exercise. An exercise stress test was also done before and after completing the study. Of those who had an abnormal heart rate recovery at the start, 41 percent had a normal recovery by the end of the program. And of those who were normal at the out-set, 90 percent remained that way. The 10 percent who did not were thought to have worsening heart disease. The patients who completed the program

were followed for eight years, during which time 197 of the 1,041 patients died. Most importantly, those who had an abnormal heart rate recovery after exercise at the end of the study were twice as likely to die as those who did not. Being diagnosed with heart disease is a wake-up call to live a healthier life. Many stop smoking, begin exercising and try to lose weight and eat right. Some succeed, but for most, gains are temporary and sooner or later they become sedentary again. And the more sedentary, the less fit your body and your heart. Add to this heart dis-ease and, sadly, the ability of the heart to respond or recover from even minor movement will be slowed. Keeping the heart fit by appropriate exer-cise will almost certainly keep you alive longer as well as make your life better. Add to this eating right and taking the appropriate medications to reduce the risk of further problems, and life expectancy will be as long as or longer than expected.

For love or lack, they carry on with their ruthless pursuit of the quick buck. And as in most things, the best defense is the best defense: Don’t leave your dog alone in your yard un-less you have an insurmountable fence and locked gates. Even then, don’t leave him outside when you aren’t home. When your dog is inside, he’s safer and your home is safer. Crate him if he can’t be trusted alone in the house yet. Walk your dog on a leash. Always. He’s less likely to get lost and less likely to be hit by a car. Microchip your dog. A chip can’t be re-moved like an ID tag, and it’s solid proof of owner-ship. Make sure the chip is registered and your in-formation is current. If your dog does go missing, check the “dogs for sale” section of Craigslist for his appear-ance. And if you do manage to hunt down the perp, try to establish contact via text. Woof!

Social Security Around the World I have always been amazed by the number of people who think Social Security is unique to the United States. Or if not truly unique, they figure that maybe a couple of those “socialist” countries like Sweden and Denmark might have social insurance programs in place, but surely not too many other places. As someone once said to me following a speech I had given: “You know that Social Security is just one of the social experiments forced on this country by FDR (Franklin Delano Roosevelt), and it’s doomed to failure just like so many of his other New Deal programs.” This guy obviously was not a history major. But he mimicked views held by so many people: So-cial Security is some kind of income redistribution experiment that the United States is testing. And if by some miracle it works here, maybe other nations around the world might follow suit. Actually, just the opposite is true. Almost every country on the planet has a Social Security system in place for its citizens. And many of those countries had Social Security laws on their books long before the U.S. jumped on the social insurance bandwagon in the 1930s. I have in front of me a book called “Social Se-curity Programs Throughout the World” that is pro-duced by the U.S. Social Security Administration. It provides thumbnail sketches of the history, funding and benefits of each country’s social insurance sys-tem. There are currently about 190 countries around the globe. And 177 of them, or 93 percent, have So-cial Security programs. I always point this out to young people who fret about the future of our Social Security system. I tell them that Social Security isn’t an American experiment in socialism that will someday run its course. Instead, Social Security is a worldwide phe-nomenon. It is a system of rules and laws in place everywhere from Albania to Zimbabwe. It is the method that civilized people across the globe use to provide some means of financial assistance to their elderly and disabled citizens, and to the widows, wid-owers and children of workers who die. It’s that last point that is very interesting. Most Social Security programs around the world of-fer benefits remarkably similar to our own -- to retir-ees, to disabled people and to survivors. I’m going to use the rest of this column to highlight the similari-ties and differences between just a random selection of those 177 programs described in my book.

The United States First Social Security laws: 1935 Funding: Workers pay 6.2 percent of wages matched by employers. Self-employed pay 12.4 per-cent. Benefits: Full retirement at 66 (going up to 67 by 2027); disability at any age if 100 percent dis-abled; survivors benefits to children under age 18 and to widow(er)s at 60 or at any age if caring for

minor children.

Germany First Social Security laws: 1889 Funding: Workers pay 9.8 percent of wages matched by employers. Self employed pay 19.6 per-cent Benefits: Full retirement at 65 (going up to 67 by 2024); disability benefits at any age for full or partial disabilities; survivor benefits to children until age 18 and possibly up to age 27; widow(er)’s ben-efits for 2 years following death or for longer period of time if caring for minor children.

Argentina First Social Security laws: 1904 Funding: Workers pay 11 percent of wages; employers pay up to 17 percent; self employed pay set monthly fees based on the kind of business. Benefits: Retirement benefits for men at 65 and for women at 60; or as early as 50 if doing “haz-ardous work;” disability at any age with a loss of 66 percent of working capacity; survivor benefits to a spouse at any age and to children under age 18.

Australia First Social Security laws: 1908. Funding: Paid for with general tax revenues (no payroll or self employment taxes). Benefits: Means-tested retirement at age 65, going to 67 by 2033; means tested disability and sur-vivor benefits. A variety of other benefits that are not means-tested are available to Australian citizens.

Niger First Social Security laws: 1967 Funding: Worker pays 5.25 percent of wages matched by employer Benefits: Retirement at 60 or age 58 for gov-ernment employees or age 55 if “prematurely aged;” disability benefits with a loss of 66 percent of work capacity; survivor benefits to children under 14 and to widow(er)s if caring for a dependent child.

If you have a Social Security question, Tom Mar-genau has the answer. Contact him at [email protected]. To find out more about Tom Margenau and to read past columns and see features from other Creators Syndi-cate writers and cartoonists, visit the Creators Syndicate web-site at www.creators.com.

Wouldn’t it be great if you could rely on everyone you deal with?

Unfortunately, too many people will promise you anything if they think it will get you to buy something from them.

That’s too bad.

But what happens when you do find someone with integrity? Someone you can trust? You go back to them, don’t you?

That’s what we think most people do. And while it might sound old-fash-ioned, that’s why we put integrity and honesty up there with education and experience as qualities we think you want in a hearing-care practice.

Of course we can’t guarantee that you’ll always like what we tell you, but we can -- and do -- guarantee that we’ll always tell you the truth.

So if you believe that old-fashioned qualities like integrity and hones-ty are important, you might want to choose us to care for your hearing.

Just give us a call and let’s set up an appointment.

Replacing Heart Valve Without Surgery DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My 88-year-old father has congestive heart failure and aortic stenosis. His cardiologist suggested transcathe-ter aortic valve replacement as an alternative to open-heart surgery. I’ve read overwhelmingly positive reports about this minimally invasive technique. I feel very strongly that doing this not only would prolong my father’s life but also would greatly improve its quality. I would ap-preciate any help you could give me to allevi-ate my father’s apprehensions. He is very leery about having any surgical procedure. -- J.W.

ANSWER: At 88, your dad probably has health considerations other than his narrowed aortic valve and congestive heart failure. Even if he does, the procedure of replacing his aortic valve without the standard surgical operation places little stress on him and gives him the chance to lead a more active and longer life. A narrowed aortic valve, aortic stenosis, makes it difficult for the heart to pump blood out into the body. The surgical procedure for replacing that valve involves cutting the breastbone (sternum) so the surgeon can view the heart directly. The trans-catheter intervention is done without any incision. A pliable tube, the catheter, is advanced from a sur-face artery and threaded into the heart. The valve replacement is attached to the catheter. When the surgeon has arrived at the site for installation, it’s accomplished directly with the catheter. This proce-dure is a godsend for elderly people who might not be able to withstand the rigors of the standard opera-tion. When people with aortic stenosis develop symptoms, their life span is greatly reduced. If con-gestive heart failure results from this valve problem, a patient, on average, has only one and a half to two years of life left. And those years are not pleasant. The affected person becomes extremely short of breath even on slight exertion. Valve replacement eliminates the death threat and the breathlessness.Your dad should reconsider his position. This proce-dure isn’t surgery. The booklet on congestive heart failure ex-plains this common condition and its treatments. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 103W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

Just Say ‘No’ Nearly every senior I know has less free time in retirement than he or she thought they would. A big reason is that others assumed the new retiree would have loads of free time and would therefore be willing and able to ... (fill in the blank). In other words, the so-called free time quickly vanished under the requests of others. A recent study compared quality of life with the amount of free time available to a retiree. It was originally assumed that more free time meant a better quality of life. Not so, researchers said. Instead, the management of the time we do have leads to a better quality of life. The researchers went so far as to suggest that seniors be taught time-management techniques. I don’t know if that’s really necessary, do you? We spent the first part of our lives managing our time, either for work or family obligations, or both. What we need to learn upon first retiring is the word “no.” “Oh, you’re retiring? Would you please watch the kids during the day to save me the baby-sitting costs?” Answer: “No.” “Can we count on you to join the board at the senior center?” Answer: “No.” “Oh, you’re retiring? Will you sign up to deliver meals to shut-ins?” Answer: “No.” No, no, no... at least until you get a handle on your free time after you’ve retired. Give it at least a couple of months. During that time, explore some of your options: a hobby you never had time for, uninterrupted hours in the library, sewing the new drapes that have sat untouched for years, building that model ship... you get the idea. Then, once you learn what “free time” you really have, maybe you can say “yes” now and then when you’re available.

DONOHUE: I am 71 years old and have been told I have DISH, diffuse id-iopathic skeletal hyperostosis. I am told there is no cure. Will you give me your opinion and advice? -- R.B.

ANSWER: DISH is something that happens in middle and older ages. It’s calcification and bone formation in the ligaments of the back. Bone spurs are part of the picture. Any part of the spine can be affected, from neck to lower back. For many, it causes no symptoms but accidentally is discovered on an X-ray. For others, it’s a source of pain and stiff-ness. Osteoarthritis, the most common kind of arthritis, has no cure either. Many therapies exist to dull its pain and preserve joint motion. The same goes for DISH. Heat, stretching exercises, Tylenol and the many nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (Aleve, Advil, Motrin, etc.) can make life livable for those with DISH. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. ● On Sept. 27, 1540, in Rome, the Soci-ety of Jesus -- a Roman Catholic mission-ary organization -- receives its charter from Pope Paul III. The first Jesuits took vows of poverty and chastity, and made plans for the conversion of millions to Catholicism.

● On Sept. 23, 1875, Billy the Kid, born William Henry McCarty, is arrested for the first time after stealing a basket of laundry. He broke out of jail and roamed the Ameri-can West, eventually earning a reputation as an outlaw and murderer, with a rap sheet that allegedly included 21 murders.

● On Sept. 29, 1907, Gene Autry, perhaps the greatest “singing cowboy” of all time, is born in Tioga, Texas. While Autry was no cowboy, he was a genuine Westerner who had lived on a ranch. His lasting fame came from films and his first movie, “In Old Santa Fe,” eventually was followed by nearly 100 other films.

● On Sept. 28, 1918, a Liberty Loan pa-rade in Philadelphia prompts a huge out-break of the flu epidemic in the city. By the time the epidemic ended, an estimated 30 million people were dead worldwide. The most likely origin of the 1918 flu pandemic was a bird or farm animal in the American Midwest.

● On Sept. 26, 1928, work begins at Chi-cago’s new Galvin Manufacturing Corp. In 1930, Galvin would introduce the Motorola radio, the first mass-produced commercial car radio. (The name had two parts: “motor” evoked cars and motion, while “ola” derived from “Victrola” record players.)

● On Sept. 25, 1965, the Kansas City Ath-letics ageless wonder Satchel Paige started a game against the Boston Red Sox. The 59-year-old Paige, a Negro League legend, proved his greatness by giving up only one hit in his three innings of play. He was the oldest pitcher ever to play a game in the major leagues.

● On Sept. 24, 1988, Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson runs the 100-meter dash in 9.79 seconds to win gold at the Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. Johnson’s triumph, however, was short-lived: He test-ed positive for steroids three days later and was stripped of the medal.

Retire in Paradise? Q: My husband will be retiring next year and we have run into a stalemate about where we will live. He wants to move to Califor-nia or Florida because of the weather. I want to stay put in Nebraska. Both of our families and grandchildren live here. He feels that since we have raised and educated our family it’s now our turn to travel, have fun and enjoy our time while our health and finances allow it. While I tend to agree with that, I do not like the idea of leaving our family. How do other new retirees deal with situations like this?

A: Upon retiring, most couples soon learn their lifestyles change. Being together 24 hours a day often changes the dynamics of a husband/wife relationship. Each finds they lose a great deal of pri-vacy and freedom. Wives tend to keep running the household, plan social activities and organize the family holidays and birthday parties. Husbands find that suddenly not having to go to work leaves them free all day without much to do if they don’t have a hobby or other interest to fill their time. They tend to watch more TV and can get annoyingly bored. Since you disagree on where you want to live, why not give both of your wishes a try? Try spending your first winter in rented condo in a warm climate, and the summer months back at home. This compromise gives you the best of both worlds and lets you experience living away from home without the permanent commitment of moving. Meeting new friends, having the kids come and visit and discovering a new lifestyle might just prove the ticket to help resolve your differences. Explore your opportunities. Take a cruise or two, visit different retirement communities and talk with the residents to see if that lifestyle is some-thing you would both like. Take a class together and choose a hobby that you both can share. Compromise is the key, and keep your op-tions open. The world is now your oyster. Enjoy! * * *

Q: While my husband has always been outgoing and enjoys meeting strangers, I am the shy one and and am never at ease mixing in at parties and social events. I would like to become more like him, but he gave up hope on me 35 years ago. Is it too late for someone my age to lose my shyness around people?

A: Ask yourself why you don’t feel com-fortable in social situations. Is it lack of confidence in yourself? Are you afraid of embarrassing yourself by saying the wrong thing or sounding ignorant? We often learn we have more in common with others than we realize. Simply asking people questions, like where they live and work can easily begin a pleasant conversation. Ask them where they grew up, if they have grandchildren, a pet, or a hob-by. These are questions that have easy answers and get people talking about themselves. By focusing on others you will be less self conscious and soon find yourself more at ease and less shy. Remember that just listening attentively as others talk will encourage them to want to know you better. Losing your shyness will give you new confi-dence, a new outlook -- and an amazed husband!

Vintage Stroller Tailored for Baby Q: This is a photo of a baby stroller that I have owned for a little more than 40 years, and I absolutely love it! I would like to pass it on to a family member who would trea-sure it as much as I have. The handle, beads and the seat are wood and the frame is metal. I am very curious as to whether it has any value. Any information you can provide would be wonderful.

A: Your stroller was also called a “Taylor Tot”. These strollers were made in the 1930s and early 1940s. There are very few that have lasted in as good condition as yours. Similar strollers can be found selling from $40 to $225, depending upon condition.

Q: I have a ceramic stein with a lid that I am curious about. It is marked on the bot-tom with the image of a stein inside a triangle and with the words “West Germany.” On one side it is decorated with a scene in relief of a hunter and woman with two children. On the opposite side is a cupid. The pewter lid has a duck on top. I inherited it from my great-uncle who always kept it on the fireplace mantel. As children, my brother and I were fascinated by it and our uncle would get it down so we could look at it more closely. It is in excellent condi-tion, and it will always be kept in the family. I would appreciate any information you can provide about the age, maker and value.

A: Simon Peter Gerz made your stein. His pottery has been located in Horhr-Grenzhause, Ger-many, since 1862. Objects that are marked “West

Germany” were made between 1949 and 1990. At the end of World War II, Germany was divided into the German Federal Republic (West Germany) and the German Democratic Republic (East Germany). In 1990, Germany was reunited. Your stein is circa 1949 and would probably be worth $75 to $125. * * *

Q: I have enclosed the mark that is on the bottom of a porcelain pedestal cake stand. The stand is approximately 6 inches tall and is decorated with pastel flowers against a white background and is trimmed with gold. I would like to learn anything about its history and value.

A: Your cake stand was made by Fischer and Mieg Pottery. They were founded in Pirkenham-mer, Bohemia, in 1857. This mark was used from 1857 to 1875. Fischer and Mieg went out of business around 1918. The value of your cake stand would probably be $125 to $175.

Optimism Persists in Oakland Spending time in Oakland, Calif., is a sport-ing event all unto itself. Oakland is a weird place in that it suffers in the shadow of its larger and more famous sister city of San Francisco. First-time visitors often are amazed at the architecture, such as the Oakland Tribune building, a landmark that appears ripped from the comic-book pages of Gotham. Most peo-ple don’t even know it’s right across the bay from San Francisco and the city has suffered from a rash of bad headlines in recent years. The crime rate is high, and the policing here is known to be a bit ex-treme too, as the Occupy Oakland riots proved. But as I return from the Burning Man festival, I find the Oakland A’s occupying first place and eye-ing a clear path to the playoffs. Going head-to-head with the Texas Rangers in early September and with the Yankees surging and knocking Baltimore back on their heels, the A’s would have to lose at least six games in a row to fall out of wildcard contention. That would be tough to do, as they have no games scheduled with any other likely contenders for the rest of the season. Meanwhile, over in Berkeley, the Golden Bears once again are showing signs of life. With a no-huddle offense and a true freshman quarterback named Jared Goff, the Golden Bears almost pulled off an upset win against Northwestern to open the season. The kid played his heart out, passing for more than 440 yards and five touchdowns -- though two were for the opposing team. Despite the loss, fans were excited to be talking about a quarterback in Aaron Rodgersesque ways. Even the Golden State Warriors were on people’s minds. Overheard in the sports bar was the fact that the Warriors will be nationally televised this year more times than ever before. I also was surprised to learn that Golden State Warrior fans be-lieve that Golden State Warrior fans are the greatest basketball fans in the nation. After a round of that discussion, I head to leave. Outside, one of the colorful local inhabitants without a home shouts like a maniac about things I cannot describe here. I turn back around. Yeah ... Golden State will be pretty good this year. Great fans. Great fans.

Cure for over-the-top move In a quest for more power and distance many players have a tendency to initiate their downswing with the dreaded over-the-top move. But many times, even though a player is aware they are guilty of this, it is still difficult to get themselves to stop this tendency.

Here’s a drill I like to use: When I get to the top of my swing I picture my right elbow coming directly down to my right hip. I can’t do both at the same time; come over

the top AND bring my right elbow directly down to my right hip. So when I get to the top of my swing I think only of bringing that right elbow down to my right hip and although it’s an exag-gerated move, it eliminates the over-the-top downswing. It is critical to make sure you have proper weight transfer as you do this and you are not sliding through the ball. Keep in mind that if you do suffer from a consistent over-the-top move, this is a great drill to get you through your round of golf, but it would also be a good idea to see your local PGA or LPGA Profes-sional and work it out for good.

ENDANGERED SIGHTS & SOUNDS (cont’d):• How long has it been since you’ve used a

typewriter eraser? Or, if you’re younger, have you moved your belongings into a long-unused desk, only to find a strange-looking gadget with fiber-like hairs bushing out of one end? What you’ve found is a typewriter eraser. Usually shaped like a pencil, the tip was made of an especially-abrasive rubber, which was used to “erase” the typing error. The other end featured a small brush made of stiff plastic strands that was used to sweep the remnants of the erasure off the page.

• There’s no shortage of litter on the ground to-day, but thankfully, we no longer see discarded pull-tabs. The tabs on older easy-open beverage cans pulled completely off the can. People who walked in bare feet were constantly dodging these carelessly-dropped metal hazards.

• The rhythmic “beep” of the scanner is the musical accompaniment to the supermarket checkout line. But if you’ve ever wondered where the cliché of saying “ka-ching!” in re-lation to money comes from, that’s the sound that the old-style electric, not electronic, cash registers made. Cashiers of that era had to manually punch a series of buttons to ring up your purchase, followed by a smack of the “total” button with the heel of the hand.

• “Do you want your carbons?” used to be an automatic question asked by merchants after you’d signed for a credit card payment. At that time, credit card receipts were filled out by hand in triplicate, with a small piece of carbon paper inserted between each sheet. It didn’t take long for thieves to realize they could retrieve the used carbons from the trash and steal valuable credit card information. Once that scam gained popularity, waiters and cashiers regularly of-fered the carbons to customers, giving them the opportunity to destroy them.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN FROM TIDBITS!

SCARY MOVIESby Ryan Toepfer

Some people just seem to love having the living daylights scared out of them. Why else would horror and suspense movies be so popular? To celebrate Halloween, Tidbits goes behind the scenes of some classic thrillers.• When Alfred Hitchcock purchased the film

rights for Psycho, he also bought up as many copies of the original novel as he could find, hoping to keep the story’s ending a secret.

• The famous shower scene of Psycho was filmed using a double for Norman Bates, as Anthony Perkins was appearing in a play (Greenwillow)in New York at the time. The first time Perkins actually saw that scene was back at the studio, watching the daily “rushes,” and he said he was just as scared as everyone else.

• Take a close look at Michael Myers’ mask in the 1978 camp classic Halloween. Does the face look familiar? The movie was filmed on such a tight budget, that the prop department had to make do with what they had. For Myers’ disguise, they used an old Captain Kirk (StarTrek) mask, which they spray painted white and then re-shaped the eyeholes.
