We meet the first Thursday of the month at Beth Sholom, 1050 S. Tuttle Ave. Sarasota FL. 34237 Workshop at 6:00 pm. Officers meeting 6:30 pm. General meeting and presentation 7:00 pm.
IT'S SHOWTIME
Yes, this month's meeting is members magic night. So dust off your props and
sharpen your routines. It's you night to shine. As an added bonus, it is also
family night. We usually do not have families at meetings, but tonight, July 5th
family and friends are invited to a magic show.
Contact Jonti by June 30th at [email protected] if you want to
be in the show so that he can set up a program for the meeting. It is your
opportunity to perform, so let's all get behind this and have a great magical
evening.
Remember the 6:00 workshop. This month is the ring on rope routine. If
you have it, bring it. If not, it will be available. The routine that was performed
at the picnic will be taught. You don't want to miss this one, just ask someone
that was at the picnic.

Members
Kudos to Ed & crew for another outstanding picnic! Over 30 members & guests
enjoyed great food and a contest featuring 7 stellar performers. First place
went to Wes for his outstanding, and very puzzling, rope routine.
Have YOU brought a prospective member to a meeting?
They must be interested in magic and be a member of the International
Brotherhood of Magicians. Applications are available from the Treasurer, Ed.
One of the many benefits of belonging to a magic club like Ring 81 is learning
from each other. So come, enjoy, and perhaps learn. July 5th is Members
Performing Night, so, bring a few tricks. See you at the NEXT meeting.
July is national convention month for the IBM & SAM; if you can attend,
here is what you will see:
The 2012 I.B.M. Convention will be held in Norfolk Virginia, July 3-7, 2012, at
the Norfolk Waterside Marriott Hotel.
There will be three big evening stage shows in the Chrysler Theater! Lectures
galore! Optional is a banquet with an exciting cabaret show. Learn from the best
in the business with a stellar line-up of lectures and great close-up shows,
fantastic youth activities, and other special events are in the works, plus some
great new activities for spouses, and for the Order of Merlin members. Continued on page 5

Ring 81 BBQ BIG Success The Ring 81 BBQ on June 10th was a very big success due to those who contributed. I’d like to thank the Cook’s: John Tietjen, John Ames & Lee Wolfson who did a tremendous job working in the hot sun. John Tietjen and John Ames also to some prep work on the food at home, Thanks John and John. Lee Wolfson also supplied the two large drink barrels and all the ICE, Thanks Lee. Thank you also to our judges (I’m sorry, I lost the sheet that had the judges names on it) for the magic contest and especially our magic contestants: Michael Kent, Jim Canaday, Lee Wolfson, Gale Molovinsky, Larry Mason, Wes Meltzer and Bob Banta. Wes Meltzer took home top prize. There were prizes given to the top 4 contestants. There was plenty of hamburgers, cheeseburgers and hot dogs and cold soda, Diet Soda and Bottled water on hand for everyone including a big anniversary
cake from Wes Meltzer and his bride celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary.
There was also a lot of schmoozing and socializing going on all day, the reason for having this event in the first place. We never seem to have enough socializing time at the meetings and the annual picnic/BBQ is the ideal place. Once again, I would like to thank all who supported and helped out in our BBQ effort to make this event such a success and to all those who attended without whom this never would have been possible. Trick of the Month.
The Lazy Location
NSR (no skill required) U.F. Grant
The Effect: The magician has a card selected and replaced in the deck. He
announces that rather than go to the trouble of finding the card himself, he
will magically cause a card in the deck to turn over to help find the selected
card. That’s exactly what happens.
Setup: Take a six spot, reverse it, and place it sixth from the bottom of the
deck.
Performance: Fan the cards and have the spectator select one. Be careful not
to expose the reversed card near the bottom of the deck. Have the spectator
look at the selection and emphasize that it is to be remembered.
Have spectator replace the card on top of the deck.
Ask spectator to cut the cards and complete the cut.
Then say, “I do not like to find a spectators card the normal way but I’ve
learned that many times the cards themselves will help. All I have to do is snap
my fingers.” Snap your fingers.
Fan the deck till you come to the reversed card. Remove the cards from the
top of this card and put them aside. State, “ this is not your card but a locator
card which will lead us to your selection.” Drop the six to the table. Count five
cards to the table and ask spectator to name his card as you reveal the sixth
card as the selection.
The patter above is just an example of what could be said. Use your own
personality and patter to perform this simple effect.

The lectures and performers that have been lined up to date are: John
Bannon, Dani DaOrtiz, David Acer, Hannibal, Wayne Houchin, Paul Gertner,
Master Payne, Chris Capehart, Rich Bloch, Julianna Chen, Johnathan Hawley,
Hou Kai, Ma Yanyan, Yuji Yasuda, Lizhi Zhao, Jordan Gomez, Gu Ying, Geoff
Williams, and George Saterial. Also on the schedule is Chip Romero. He is

along with FISM award winner Arthur Trace.
The Gold Medal and Gold Cups Contests - often regarded as the best-run
contest in magic are always a favorite. The dealers have uncontested time to
show their latest and greatest and they have even designed a 24 hr hangout
area to jam. Yes, there is a bar just feet away, too. More talent to announce
and some very special extras. Register NOW to get close-in seats and before
the price goes up $50 on June 28, register at www.Magician.Org or see the
I.B.M. International Registration Chairman, Bob Patterson
The 2012 S.A.M. Convention will be held in Las Vegas, Nevada, Monday, July
23 - Thursday July 26, 2012 at the Golden Nugget! Go to http://
www.magicsam.com for more information. Featuring David Copperfield and
Mac King. Comedy magician Johnny Thompson will be one of the six lecturers.
Katalin, the young Hungarian magician, adds her stylish magic and comedy to
the roster of great acts.
Best regards, Gale

The Magician
Magic has become a part of me, it burns me from inside
I use it to release my creativity, and by natures laws I do not abide
I make cards disappear, and it puts a smile on people's faces
Cards move from there to here, and then off to other places
I do possess the potential to blow away someone's mind
Yet, upon their face nothing but pure joy do I find
They love the magic that I do and my "Supernatural Powers"
With a deck of cards and a spectator too, I can amaze for many hours
I practice long and hard to do what I can do
With my hands and a deck of cards, I could amaze even you
Every magician is different in some way, shape, or form
We set ourselves apart with the styles by which we perform
We love to do our magic, and to please the spectators too
And if you ever ask a magician, I am sure he will do magic for you
