The other day I was on a conference call on enhancing the district’s social media presence/sharing “high tech” tips with our clubs. (Scary thought, I know, that I would be a part of that call!) Phillip Mosteller, Lt. Governor from the Western Catawba Co Club, mentioned how important blogging is and how we should consider that as a part of our strategy. Chris White, Lt. Governor-Elect from the Raleigh Club, spoke up saying “Governor Coop is blogging every month when his letter is placed on our website.” I did not know that was what I was doing, but I have told everyone since then that I am a “blogger” with my chest stuck out! Did I mention that is a scary thought? I now offer you my blog! I hope everyone is gearing up for the District’s 100th Anniversary Food Drive. The entire month of May everyone w ill participate in a “food drive” - our goal being to collect 10,000,000 pounds of food. The easiest and most effective way to participate as a club is to buy a truckload of food for $560 (equating to 40,000 pounds). We are working with North and South Carolina food banks to make this project happen. Children are starving in all of our communities all year long - not just around the holidays. Contact your Lt. Governor or Regional Trustee for more info. We are now over halfway through our Kiwanis year, and we still need to focus on achieving our goals. Growth With Service Is Our Purpose. I know I can count on you to do your part:

Cultivate – Help us open clubs in areas not served. Give yourselves a 100th birthday present by finishing the year at least +1 in membership. Volunteer to be a part of the Formula Team. Love It. Share It. Live It.

Eliminate – If you have not pledged to rid the world of Maternal/Neonatal Tetanus please do so NOW because we want to complete our $3.5 million goal in memory of Tom Dimmock. We are at 92% of our goal, so dig deep for Tom!

Celebrate – Plan a special 100th Anniversary fundraiser, service project, banquet or all three. Strive to be a Distinguished Club as a present to yourself for our great milestone. We received proclamations from Governor Haley in SC and Governor McCrory in NC proclaiming January 21, 2015 as Kiwanis Day.

Liberate – We need each Club to contribute at least $500 to the Kiwanis Cottage 50th Anniversary Legacy Fund Campaign to make sure that the Kiwanis Cottage is operational for perpetuity.

I am happy to report that the Carolinas District is +81 members through March. We have seven regions, fourteen divisions and 72 clubs that have positive growth this Kiwanis year. I am proud of all the effort being made to recruit and retain members throughout the District. Here are the clubs with +5 membership growth or better: Banner Elk +15, Black Mountain-Swannanoa +14, Hope Mills Area +7, Raleigh +7, Wilmington +7, Charlotte +5, Seven Lakes +5, Oxford +5, Greater Greenville +5, Hampstead +5 and N. Brunswick +5. Just think of how many more children we can serve with more Kiwanians to serve them. Thanks to everyone. We have new club sites identified and in the early stages of opening in their communities. Where will our next new club be: West Brunswick, Goose Creek, Brevard, Yadkinville, Morehead City, Clayton, Pleasant Garden or a surprise location? (I really LOVE surprises that benefit children.) WE NEED YOU!! Please register for the International Convention! You won’t want to miss being a part of history. Also we need you there to elect Elizabeth Tezza as International Vice President. The Carolinas District hasn’t had an International President since 1960-61 with Joe Tally, Jr. from the Fayetteville Club. August will be here before we know it. I need for everyone to make plans now to attend our District Convention in Pinehurst August 14-16. I couldn’t think of a better place to learn more about Kiwanis, celebrate our 100th Anniversary, network with the greatest “givers” on earth (Kiwanians) than at the spectacular Carolina Hotel, all in a VERY relaxed atmosphere. I am so excited about the plans for this convention, and I assure you it’s one you won’t want to miss. TOGETHER we can make a difference in our communities, the world, and in the lives of the children we serve. While we serve, always remember to have FUN. As always, thanks for all y’all do for Kiwanis and the youth we serve.

Yours in Kiwanis Service, Coop

For the fifth consecutive year, the Kiwanis Club of the Sandhills successfully hosted its Celebration of the Military Child, a day quickly gaining community attention as a signature event of spring. Saturday’s event ran for three hours beneath blue skies and balmy breezes, a welcome break from three prior days of rain, at the Village of Pinehurst’s Arboretum. Close to 1,000 people from as far away as Fayetteville turned out to enjoy the cookout, kids’ activities and entertainment — all free and sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of the Sandhills and its partner, the Village of Pinehurst. Longtime Kiwanians Suzy and Charlie Carlton have been the primary coordinators for an event whose attendance and community participation continues to grow each year. “This celebration is intended to recognize the children for their courage, service, sacrifice and resilience as military family members, and we want them to have a fun day,” Suzy Carlton said.

The event was created as a way to show support for the children and families of active-duty military members, as well as those of reservists and veterans. According to Moore County Schools statistics, more than 1,300 students are connected to the military in some way and approximately 1,150 students have at least one active-duty military parent. “May there be absolutely no mistake,” said Moore County Schools Superintendent Dr. Robert Grimesey during opening remarks. “The Moore County Board of Education, the superintendent of schools and everyone associated with Moore County Schools considers it our passionate privilege to serve as the educational home and family for our military-connected children and their families. Through the support of the Kiwanis Club of the Sandhills, MCS is an active member of the Military Child Education Coalition.” Other dignitaries on hand Saturday included Fort Bragg Garrison Commander Jeffrey Sanborn, who will become Pinehurst Village Manager later this summer when he retires from the Army, and Kiwanis Carolinas District Governor Gary Cooper.

Saturday’s Celebration of the Military Child, which has since grown to encompass other children in the community, included a number of events for the children, including the ever-popular video game trailer, pony rides, inflatable houses and obstacle courses, face painting, games and entertainment that included, for the first time, magician John Tudor with his own black-and-white rabbit, who kept the young children rapt. For the adults, the day included tables staffed by the Military Child Education Coalition and other military family support organizations offering information and help. Members from the Kiwanis Club of the Sandhills and its Aktion Club served up hamburgers and hot dogs, cold drinks and patriotically decorated cupcakes to service members, veterans and hundreds of children.

Event goers were entertained by the Pinecrest High School Brass Quintet, magician John Tudor and a performance by the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Chorus, which has been a regular participant in the annual event. "It is exciting to see the Kiwanis Club of Sandhills partner with the Village of Pinehurst to make the 5th Annual Celebration of the Military Child a huge success,” said Cooper. “Kiwanis is all about partnering to better the lives of children. This celebration is important to the military children and for the volunteers from the Village of Pinehurst and Kiwanis. When you hear the laughter and see the smiles and feel the excitement of the children you know your efforts are worthwhile."

By day’s end, it was the military veterans and their families who were expressing their appreciation to Kiwanis and its partners for hosting the event. “An awesome event,” said one mother with two small children in tow. “Thank you so much for doing this for us. You don’t know how much it means.”

MATTHEWS, N.C.: The term Ubuntu appears in South African sources dating back to the mid-19th century. Reported translations include “…humanity towards others” And the idealism of unbuntu suggests that humanity is a quality we owe to each other; we need to sustain one another. Gary Faircloth, Executive Director of the Boys & Girls Home of North Carolina, invoked this powerful word when recognizing the love and actions of the Matthews-South Charlotte Homeschool & the Butler High School Key Clubs at the Carolinas District Key Club Convention this past weekend. The members of these two clubs, led by the idea & planning of the Homeschool Club, hosted a Haunted Trail this past October. The proceeds were delivered to the Boys & Girls Home with the commitment to assist in sponsoring a new Key Club for Boys & Girls Home students. Well, the Flemington Academy Key Club is up & running, and we’d better watch out – they have already elected a Lt. Governor from their brand new club! Such energy, drive & commitment to others is what built this club; and the members of the Kiwanis Club of Matthews continue to admire those qualities in the members of the Key Clubs they sponsor – especially these two outstanding clubs. So we express our gratitude & congratulations to the Matthews-South Charlotte Homeschool & Butler

Rev. Dan Brubaker, President of the Kiwanis Club of Banner Elk, watches Banner Elk Mayor Brenda Lyerly as she signs a very special proclamation Monday, March 9. The proclamation declares March 2015 as “Kiwanis Club of Banner Elk Appreciation Month” in the Town of Banner Elk. Kiwanis is praised for volunteer services for and financial support of services for children, both locally and worldwide. (Photo and article courtesy HCPress.com)

The Pam & Russ Wagner Community Service Memorial Scholarship

Selection for this one time $5,000 scholarship, sponsored by the Carolinas District Kiwanis Foundation, is based on community service, volunteer activity, leadership, school activities and academics, among other criteria. It is awarded to a relative of a Kiwanian who has been an active member in the Carolinas District of Kiwanis for a minimum of four years.

Scholarship promotion appears in CDNews for several weeks in the fall as well as in the Carolina Kiwanian. Applications are available at the CDKF display at the District Convention, via request to [email protected] and in the future via the District website.

Applications are to be postmarked by November 30th, with no exceptions. Selection is made by three members of CDKF Committee. Only the winning entry is notified.

The recipient is formally announced and introduced at the Kiwanis Midyear meeting.

The Wagners were an altruistic minded couple from Greenville, SC. They both enjoyed community service and were dedicated to improving the lives of children and families though the Kiwanis organization. The 2015 scholarship recipient is Ryan C. Calhoun, nephew of Gladys Chianello, a member of the Kiwanis Club of Greenville, NC. Ryan first encountered service opportunities as a Cub Scout and his passion for service continues today. One of his favorites is the Appalachia Service Project, which builds and repairs homes in the Appalachian region. It was the first time a service project had enabled him to immediately see the efforts of service upon the people who were helped. He states that, “Serving has humbled me in a way that nothing else in the world could.” He has been referred to as “a skilled and committed leader” at Garner Magnet School. He created and serves as president of the Math Club, president of Science Olympiad and VP of the Beta Club. Ryan is active with his church youth group and is very involved with Young People in Mission, a camp for ages12-24. Ryan is currently ranked number one in the senior class in the International Baccalaureate program. He has been recognized for his remarkable academics as: Outstanding Mathematician, Excellence in IB Physics, IB Math, Honors Physics and Honors Chemistry, among other recognitions. He plans to study mechanical engineering at MIT in the fall.

As we come closer and closer to the end of school and high school graduations, I receive more and more ques-tions about scholarships available to members of our service leadership programs and others. Below is a com-posite of what is available at the District level, where these awards are distributed, whom awards them and when applications are due. - Leah Moretz, Carolinas District Secretary.

(OJEDA continued) participated in a mission trip to lead a church camp for refugee children. Each Halloween she “dresses up” in a Key Club t-shirt and solicits funds in her neighborhood for the Eliminate Project through Trick or Treat for UNICEF. Her club has developed school-wide fundraisers to support the effort, which brought the school special recognition at the Key Club District Convention. Abigail states, “By campaigning for UNICEF throughout the month of October, I readjust my focus towards benefitting others. Ultimately, I have personally experienced how service unites families, neighborhoods and communities. As I attend college and then have a career, I am certain that as long as I am serving others, I will be a part of a

loving, giving community.” Because of her passion for the Eliminate Project, several friends as well as her siblings have become Key Club members. Abigail plans to major in English but has yet to decide which college she will attend.

THE ROBERT F. GOODWIN SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship recognizes an individual who truly displays the characteristics of a leader in their everyday life. This person demonstrates caring, commitment, compassion and concern for others as illustrated by the award’s namesake, who personally supports and funds this award. Mr. Goodwin has served Key Club members for over 40 years, with nearly 30 of those years as a Faculty Advisor, then as a Kiwanis Advisor to his local Key Club.

CULLEN TYNDALL, a three year Key Club member, has just completed his term as Carolinas Key Club Governor. He lives in Goldsboro, NC and is a member of the Eastern Wayne High School National Honor Society, Math Team and Mock Trial Team. Cullen serves as an after school math tutor through the high school Homework Lab and has participated in numerous service projects with Key Club as well as with their sponsoring Kiwanis Club. He is an AP Scholar with Distinction and was selected to attend NC Governor’s School. Supporting and participating in the Key Club district project, The Boys and Girls Homes, has had a profound effect on Cullen. It “demonstrated how the actions of a united group of caring individuals can change the lives of those the majority may never meet.” In the fall, Cullen will become an ardent “Blue Devils” fan as he plans to

major in Public Policy and “work to change the world through the field of public service” following his time at Duke.

Becky hails from the beautiful Appalachian mountain range in Northern Pennsylvania. Growing up in the small town of Mansfield, she comes from a very active and civically involved family. She continued that spirit by being active in high school sports, many clubs and activities in her church. Her Kiwanis involvement started at an early age by assisting her father in many of his Kiwanis Club’s activities. The first week of her freshman year of High School, she sought out to join Key Club. She did join, albeit as a “Keyette”. The disappointment quickly vanished of not being recognized as a “true

Key Clubber” thanks to her wonderful advisor for making everyone feel equal and just as important. Becky continued getting involved at every opportunity, throughout her years traveling around the world as an Air Force spouse. Every temporary home allowed her to make a difference, by serving and leading the Spouses Club as president and in other offices. Upon returning from Guam and assigned to Pope Air Force Base, NC, she and her family settled in the Sandhills. Being the manager of the local credit union afforded her ample opportunities to get involved in the surrounding community. She offered many the gifts of her financial experience, which assisted many in setting and achieving their financial goals. Highlights of Pope include serving as an Honorary Commander, honorary member of the Chief’s Group, of which she was bestowed the coveted “Chief’s Head” and the Volunteer Advisory Council. Her favorite acronym is VIP – Volunteers Involved at Pope. After retiring from Pentagon Federal Credit Union (PENFED), Becky tried to find her niche. Her service increased in the Kiwanis Club of Spring Lake. Becky served on many committees, on service projects and fundraisers, and held every officer position several times. This involvement inspired her, with the help of a former Carolinas District Governor and her father, to serve as Lt. Governor of Division 11. What a year, the best, and she loved it!! After serving in such a great capacity, she wondered what would be next. The first answer: Build Clubs. She was instrumental in locally building both the Kiwanis Club of Western Harnett and the Overhills Key Club (serving as their advisor). The second answer: serve as the Division 11 EliMiNaTe Coordinator, which was very special and rewarding for her. Having her division achieve 100% of clubs pledged was just icing on the cake! Outside Kiwanis, Becky serves on many committees within her Property Owners Association, The Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and other associations. Becky is an alumnus of the University of Maryland, retired from Pentagon Federal Credit Union and is currently self employed as a Realtor for Coldwell Banker Advantage which allows her to (semi) set her own schedule for her volunteer activities. She resides in the Carolina Lakes Community in Western Harnett County. Becky (van der Hiel) is married to Scott Horton who is from her same home town, retired Air Force and a fellow Kiwanian. They have one son, Christopher. Right now they live vicariously through nieces and nephews and sometimes are known to “borrow neighborhood children” until the grandchildren arrive.

Kiwanis Programs

11

Did your club participate in Kiwanis One Day? We want your pictures! Please send your pictures and articles to our Service Chairman Charlie Bowie ([email protected]) by Friday May 22 to be included in an upcoming issue of the Carolina Kiwanian. Pictured above are Kiwanians from the Winston-Salem, Twin City and Clemmons Kiwanis clubs participating and working the March of Dimes of Winston-Salem.

Attention: Clubs that participate in Kiwanis One Day should report the events on the online monthly report form. This helps Kiwanis track and measure service projects, participation, and help improve our programs. Due to a large reduction in banner patch requests, Kiwanis International is no longer producing banner patches as recognition for this signature project.

Hampstead Kiwanis celebrates special day By Bill Messer of the Topsail Voice Kiwanians from the Hampstead Kiwanis Club hosted [their] annual Kiwanis One Day event on Sunday, April 12, to recognize their local efforts in service to the community.

Guests from nearby clubs and local government, State representative Chris Millis, County Commissioner David Williams, Carolinas District Kiwanis Governor Gary Cooper, Kiwanis Division 18 Lt. Governor Richard Schrum, joined the club’s leaders as they recognized the efforts from the many government and business entities that are involved on a continued basis.

“Since this park opened in 2006,” observed Governor Cooper, “I would guess thousands have benefitted from having access to these fields. Kiwanis is committed to the children of every community, and this is important to Pender County and Hampstead. You are making a difference in the lives of these kids, and I say, ‘Thank you for that.’”

New projects announced today include the Kamp Kiwanis campsite, an adult-sized ball field, and the transfer of an additional 26 acres to Pender County for development and expansion. Club President Nancy Hansing presented recognition certificates to several members, and the name plaque for the new ball field, Smith Field, in memory of Joseph Johnson Smith Sr.

Hampstead Kiwanis Club joins the thousands of other Kiwanis family clubs around the world as part of Kiwanis One Day, a global day of service that unites the entire Kiwanis family.

The Kiwanis family is made up of Kiwanis, Aktion Club, Circle K, Key Club, Builders Club and K-Kids. Kiwanis International expects that Kiwanis One Day will contribute nearly one million service hours around the world in just one day.

A specially decorated cake helped commemorate the One Day event as well as celebrate the 100th anniversary of [Kiwanis], along with sandwiches and cookies. About 60-70 Kiwanians and guests attended, and scores of onlookers and park visitors paused to watch the event.

100th Anniversary Service Project

12

Governor Cooper's 100th Anniversary Service Project Friday, February 6, 2015, the Carolinas District Board of Trustees adopted a food drive as the district's 100th Anniversary Service Project. Past Governor/Region 2 Trustee Bill Wiggs challenged clubs to give 100,000 lbs (or 2.5 truckloads) for our 100th birthday. On average, a truckload costs $560. Who: All Carolinas District Kiwanis Clubs are invited to participate. This is a great project for our Service Leadership Programs to help on as well. Why not work together and accept Bill's challenge? What: A food drive to acquire at least 10 million pounds of food (250 truckloads) throughout North and South Carolina by clubs giving to their local foodbanks. Work with your local food bank/food pantry to provide funding or food to acquire truckloads of food. Promote the event!!!! When: May 1 through May 31, 2015 Where: A Food Drive/Fundraiser at your local club for your local food bank Why: 15.8 million American children lived in homes with food insecurities in 2012. (One in four children in NC) 62% of teachers regularly see their students come to school hungry. Hunger has been linked to lack of focus and poor test performance in K-12 students. Food banks are by far the single most important source of food for emergency food providers, accounting for 84% of the food distributed by pantries, 59% of the food distributed by kitchens, and 40% of the food distributed by shelters. Find your local food bank here: NC: http://ncfoodbanks.org/ SC: http://scfoodbankassociation.org/ Questions? Located inside the 2.5 mile oval is a Hall of Fame Museum. • Take your sight-seeing indoors to the Indianapolis City Market Find more than 30 local artisan booths. • Downtown, you will also find the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art, Indiana

Historical Society, Indiana State Museum and the NCAA Hall of Champions. Or head north about 10 minutes to explore the Indianapolis Museum of Art.

View more tourist spots before your trip. Don’t forget that tours of the Kiwanis International office are scheduled daily throughout the convention. See you in June!

"We owe it to ourselves, our clubs, divisions, district and organization to be there, take part in the education, cama-raderie, celebration and VOTE Elizabeth Tezza as the next International Vice President! We should be able to turn out 500. Each club can have two delegates, and that doesn't

count all of the at-large delegates we can have. Make this a priority. Make the trip. Make your vote count. Celebrate!" - Stan Perry, Past Governor and Int’l Convention Chairman

The session will feature national leaders from the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading providing an overview of the campaign, dis-cussing parent engagement and healthy reading evidence-based strategies and sharing best practices about collective efforts. Lead-ers from local campaigns will showcase how the effort is making an impact in their communities. The session is designed for anyone seeking to build a collaborative effort to implement birth-through-grade-3 evidence-based strategies to improve grade-level reading.

Session Description: Moving from Why to What: The Cam-paign for Grade-Level Reading Through public w ill building efforts like the First 2000 Days, community leaders are moving from “Why early childhood?” to “What can I do?” Simultaneously, legislation like Read to Achieve is heightening awareness of the importance of third grade reading proficiency - the single greatest predictor of high school graduation and later success.

. Across the country, communities are capitalizing on such opportunities, taking concrete action and improving child outcomes through the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading – a movement to take action on grade-level reading. . Learn about how the Campaign provides a platform for structured community action and serves as a vehicle for creating new partnerships and funding relationships. Strategize with North Carolina and Virginia Campaign com-munities that are implementing evidence-based approaches and engaging diverse community leaders. Learn from national experts about the core Campaign Strategies around the readiness gap, parent engagement and healthy development.

Ben Hogan’s Story at Pinehurst IT WAS MARCH OF 1940, and Ben Hogan was winless in seven years of professional golf. At times, he was on the brink of quitting and returning to a club pro job at home in Fort Worth, Texas. One report said he had $30 in his pockets and bald tires on his second-hand automobile after the tour left its wintertime swing through Florida. And then he came to Pinehurst.
