Fukurō (Antonella Filippi)
The only regional haiku organisation in Italy the Whirligig editors are aware of, is Cascina Macondo in the Turin area - which can even be considered as a national haiku association. One of its members is Antonella Filippi. In 2010, she published a haiku collection in four languages titled Rosa d’autunno / Autumn Rose under the Japanese pen name of Fukurō (owl). Its well balanced structure was briefly noted in the book’s description in Whirligig (November 2010). The selection below was picked from that book - ignoring that structure.

The First Crocus, uitgegeven in 2000. As an entomologist Marianne Kiauta specialized in dragonflies. She still plays an active part in the publication of two journals in that field. Hence it’s irresistible to say that she and dragonflies share a perspective of 360 degrees: her haiku cover the world all around her. Now she is retired and, with her husband, runs a relief center for domestic animals. She published her haiku primarily in Dutch, but in translation also in, among others, German, English and Slovenian publications. Whirligig has made a selection from her bilingual volume (English and Slovenian) Prvi Žafran / The First Crocus, published in 2000. The English versions were then realized with the assistance of David Cobb (with whom she also used to compose linked poems) and Patricia Moot. At the author’s request the line order has been changed in one of the poems (heeling in the wind). For this publication the Dutch versions have been rewritten in consultation with the author. birds practising scales vogelstemoefeningen a glimpse of blooming catkins een glimp van bloeiende katjes through fogginess door mistflarden heen heeling in the wind schuin in de wind two butterflies on my knee twee vlinders op mijn knie ready to sail met volle zeilen

Wally Swist (USA) Wally Swist was a featured poet in the last issue of Whirligig. As is usual in the dichters/poets section, the selected poems had been previously published. Previously unpublished poems are normally considered for the gedichten/poems section. However, if the new work merits at least a full page… ‘She doesn’t have it from a stranger.’ So says a Dutch expression, and it certainly applies to Clara Timmermans’ talent. For she is a daughter of the Flemish author Felix Timmermans (1886-1947), whose work continues to be read. In fact, one of her best known haiku – not included in the volumes from which the selection below stems – respectfully refers to her father’s ‘writing pen’. Clara is one of the early haiku poets in the Dutch-language area and her work is still largely grafted on the classical Japanese haiku tradition, but adds an unmistakable Flemish/Dutch flavor to it. So something has been adopted from Japanese culture, which has also been adapted to a personal poetics. The selection below was gathered from her volumes Een papieren parasol (A paper parasol - 1980) and Langs de waterkant (Along the waterfront - 1986). Mijn kastanjelaar! My chestnut tree! Gerrit Wassing
In 1995, when Gerrit Wassing published his first volume of haiku, Een handvol leegte (A Handful of Emptiness), he was living on Ameland, an island in what the Dutch call the Waddenzee (Mud Flats Sea). For indeed, at ebb tide the waters recede, leaving nothing but mud flats between the island and the mainland. Before that he had published haiku in W.J. van der Molen’s journal Kortheidshalve (For Brevity’s Sake). His distinct personal voice was evident from the start. One characteristic of his style being the way he uses metaphor and personification – even at a time when that was thought to be inadmissible in haiku. That was one of the reasons his first volume was at the time reviewed quite unfavorably in Vuursteen, the common journal of both the Dutch and Flemish haiku societies. Time for a reconsideration. Whirligig published a selection of Wassing’s haiku from a later book in volume I-1 (May 2010), but the haiku presented below are all from that mud flats debut. De nacht loopt met mij mee – The night walks with me – op haar huid staan de sterren on its skin the stars are een beetje te trillen trembling a little Achter mijn venster Behind my window ligt in het dal de nacht in the valley the night sleeps met de zomer te slapen with the summer

Klaus Dieter Wirth If anyone can be called a haiku cosmopolitan, it is Klaus-Dieter Wirth, even though he only has a German passport at his disposal. He is at once a polyglot (fluent German, French, English, Spanish and Dutch with a more than superficial know-ledge of yet other languages) and an ardent haiku aficionado. As a consequence he's a member of a range of haiku organizations and he writes and publishes in all of the above languages, and since 1968 has published in a score of journals and anthologies.
In 2010 his first individual haiku volume was published: Zugvögel / Migratory birds. It collects all of his published haiku and senryu poems from the years 1968-2003. The selection below was picked from that volume. Recently a follow up volume has appeared, covering a succeeding period: Im Sog der Stille / In the Wake of Silence (see page 69).
Capital letters and punctuation marks are in conformity with the book publication. In the Dutch translations (by Max Verhart in this case) these have, after consultation with the author, been adapted to the latter's current views.

A year later On his 75th birthday, some friends present him with a lucky bamboo and from behind his oxygen mask he gives a wan smile of thanks. I turn quickly to avoid his seeing the tears which threaten to spill over. He now has secondaries in the brain and it is just a matter of time before he breathes his last. I take the lucky bamboo home, as plants are not allowed in the hospital. The next two days are a desperate whirl of radiation therapy and intravenous fluids to control the intractable nausea. I sign the DNR* form. In the predawn hours he collapses in our son's arms.

Termite hills Mysore was a new world, where I saw my first out-of-zoo elephant padding down a tar road with unhurried elephantine grace and the tinkling of a brass bell. But even in Mysore elephants were not an everyday sight on the road, and there were other things to occupy one’s attention on a more routine basis. One of these were the termite hills that sprouted like red-soil plants on the empty plots in our outskirt of the town. Determined to keep the cobras reputed to live in them from coming out and swarming all over the overground world, I took to stuffing the holes with stones. It wasn’t always easy to find stones of the right shape and size. Eventually I was dragged away by a horrified passerby, who came all the way home with me to warn my mother about what I was up to. Strictly forbidden from going near termite hills after that, I always made sure there was nobody around before continuing with my mission of keeping us humans safe from cobras.

(Image on the back cover)
On the outside, the box measures 4.7 x 6.5 x 1 inch and has been finished with imitation snake skin in a dark bluish grey. A white label has been stuck on it with an author’s name, a title and a specification: Roel Mellema, Wind Veren, 52 haiku.
The original content consists of 54 printed white cards and a narrow ribbon, meant to keep together and/or to make it easier to lift the contents out of the box. But something has been added later: three letters.
The cards all measure 4.1 x 5.8 inches. The top one has the same text and design as the label on the box. The bottom card has a colophon, stating that the set was self-published by the author in 2000. The other cards are numbered from 1 to 52 and on each one appears one haiku. Each haiku features a species of bird. But they are no longer in the original order.
The three letters date from February and March 2000 and probably comprise the complete correspondence between the author and W.J. van der Molen, then both publisher and editor of the journal Kortheidshalve (For Brevity’s Sake), dedicated to short poems. The form it most frequently presented was haiku.
Did Van der Molen find anything in this series for his journal, Mellema asked. And he explained that it followed the ‘bird year’ from week to week. So it was an alternative for the season order that at that time was still quite common.
And yes, the editor did find some things in it, even if for the sake of poetry he suggested some minor editorial changes here and there.
The author agreed and so the June 2000 issue of Kortheidshalve presented a series of eighteen haiku from this collection, though not in the order given them originally by Mellema, but in the order the publisher-editor preferred. And sure enough, that is exactly the order the selected poems still have in the box!
The title Wind Veren makes a certain play with words. Literally translated it reads ‘Wind Feathers’. But it also hints at clouds, since in Dutch ‘windveren’, written as one word, refers to thin wind-stretched clouds.
The haiku in the image:
Deeply hidden call – omnipresent bittern in the reed
Van der Molen died in 2002. Mellema was no more heard of in the Dutch-
language haiku world.

Haiku from Croatia Outside of its country of origin haiku has by now taken root almost everywhere. Certainly one of the richest areas is the Balkans. This is evidenced by the number of poets and publications, but also by the attention for and appreciation of Balkan haiku from abroad. The founder of Slavic haiku in particular is undisputedly Vladimir Devidé, a Croatian japanologist and mathematician. For several decades he propagated his enthusiasm for haiku through a great number of publications, lectures and his own haiku. Thus he inspired all of southeastern Europe. For his efforts on behalf of haiku he was awarded the prestigious Japanese Order of the Sacred Treasure in 1983. Devidé died in August 2010 at the age of eighty five.
The selection below is limited to haiku from Croatia. The period covered includes the years in which bloody wars were fought between nations and peoples that at one time formed the former Yugoslavia. Haiku bearing witness of war events are among the most poignant ever written.
Since the editor compiling this selection has no command of the Croatian language, it came about on the basis of English translations. As it happens Slavic languages don’t use separate articles. In translations by Croatians one therefore regularly finds articles where they are out of place while they are lacking else-where. Also, English translations often seem to be very literal, presumably at the expense of the perception present in the source language. But isn't poetry "what gets lost in (literal) translation"? Hence in some cases the available English translations were re-edited, while the Dutch translations from the English versions are even more liberal. This can be accounted for in relation to the English versions, but not with equal confidence with regard to the Croatian source. The alternative however was to reject the poem altogether. And that seemed even less desirable.
Devidé overleed in augustus 2010, vijfentachtig jaar oud.

David Cobb doesn’t have to prove anything anymore as a haijin and haibunist – as Marching with Tulips proves. But there is much to be learned from him about the art of haibun writing – as What Happens in Haibun shows on the basis of the haiku in the other volume. A twin book! Here’s a haiku out of its haibun context: David Cobb hoeft als haikudichter en haibunschrijver niks meer te bewijzen – zoals Marching with Tulips bewijst.

With printing on demand, having a book published no longer requires the involve-ment of an editor or publisher. Which is often quite obvious. In this first haiku volume by Ettina Hansen one finds both poems which fall rather flat, as well as poems in which there certainly is something essential to be experienced. Katô Ikuya: Ryoken. Shoshi Ars, Tokyo (Japan). ISBN 978-907078-08-9. Hard cover, 16.0 x22.1 cm (slip box), 15.6 x 21.6 cm (book size), 230pp. Price 3500 yen. Katô Ikuya was a prominent contemporary Japanese haiku poet, who died in 2012. In November 2011 Whirligig already gave some attention to a previous volume. Ryoken (to be translated as 'A View'), posthumously publishes nearly a thousand haiku from the years 2005 - 2012, compiled by ms Yamaguchi Akiko, the publishing house's president. Beautifully produced, but for those who cannot read Japanese, that's as far as the admiration can go. Thanks to Ito Isao's English translation, here's an example anyway: there's a vague figure een vage gestalte passing by - komt voorbij - the end of the year het eind van het jaar

Anita Krumins: Susurrus. IĦŝpress, Toronto (Ontario, Canada) 2013. ISBN 978-0-9881179-1-4. Perfect bound, 13.8 x 21.4 cm, 56 pp. Price $ 10. Susurrus is Anita Krumins' first individual volume of haiku, though she has already been published in a score of journals and anthologies. Actually, this volume gathers 48 haiku that have been published previously. Dietmar Tauchner: Steg zu den Sternen. Wiesenburg Verlag, Schweinfurt (Germa-ny) 2012. ISBN 978-3-943528-23-7. Hard cover, 14.4 x 21.6 cm, 137 pp. Price € 14,80. This is Dietmar Tauchner's first haiku book ('Gangway to the Stars') in his mother tongue. Tauchner, internationally one of the best known German-language haiku poets, has arranged his haiku for this volume in fifteen sections.

Klaus-Dieter Wirth: Im Sog der Stille / In the Wake of Silence. Hamburger Haiku Verlag, Hamburg (Germany) 2013. ISBN 978-3-937257-72-3. Perfect bound, 14.6 x 21.0 cm, 240 pp. Price € 16,90. In 2010 the multilingual haiku poet Klaus-Dieter Wirth started to collect his previ-ously published haiku. The four-, partly five-language volume Zugvögel/Migratory Birds (see also pages 22-27) brought 150 haiku together from the years 1967-2003. This new volume presents 208 haiku in four, sometimes five languages, from the period 2004-2007. Which makes one expect this is not Wirth's last collection.
