It was morning on Friday, 18th October2013 – and there was tension in the air. Thereligious sentiments of Catholics in &around Bandra were hurt because the BMChad pasted notices on their crosses. Thiswas done in spite of this being a recentlysettled matter. The public mood demandedjustice.

More than 120 angry people gatheredin front of the BMC Office at St. MartinsRoad.

At first, BMC authorities tried tosuppress any reporting by stopping thepress cameras. However, with publicpressure - the press was allowed to coverthis protest. To watch the complete coverageplease visit: www.bandrabuzz.com/cross-issue.html This was a wise decision, asother people who could not come; can nowsee what exactly happened – and the realissues involved.

Adv. Godfrey Pimenta explained thelegal aspects at various stages of the protest– even pointing out to Supreme Courtorders. The young & handsome BMC Asst.Commissioner Prashant Sapkale, flanked byhis team & security tried to explain his viewpoint in Marathi, but the protesters booedhim on various issues. Emotions wereincreasing – and anger over injustice wereapparent on the faces of the protesters.Something needed to be done – anddecisions taken “right now”. By now, thetraitors (Judases) within the communitywere very evident, mingling in the crowd. The burning embers were soon beingfanned to become flames.

There was a move to divide theprotesters & have a meeting of around 10‘leaders’ inside closed doors – on the pretextthat the people had asked for a hearing.Dereyk Talker instantly opposed this, sayingthat this should be addressed as acommunity – and got the support of theangry crowd. He demanded a revocation inwriting, and openly challenging & defyingthe BMC to put notices on other illegalencroachments. Anil Joseph claimed this isan election stunt – asking, “Why was anagreed & settled matter brought out justbefore an election”. BCS President GordonD’Souza explained the Sabha stand on thisdelicate issue, urging the BMC to contactthem, instead of pasting notices on crosses.Nicholas Almeida asked, “How can a crossrespond to a notice?” Warren Fernandessaid that names and contact nos. weresubmitted – and why were notices not sentto the persons concerned? Neil Pereirademanded that the ward officer do his

homework in a proper way & then takeaction, if necessary. Bernie Tellis pointedout, “We cannot forgive them, because theyKNOW what they are doing. We will nottake this lying down”.

BMC Asst. Commissioner P. Sapkalethen apologized in public for pasting thenotices on the crosses, stating that he hadno intention of hurting the religioussentiments of the community.

The peaceful protesters continued todemand justice, even as the ward officerreturned to his office. The H(West) Ward isthe most sensitive & important ward inSuburban Mumbai – and what happenedbrought out a lot of skeletons from the BMCcupboard. After watching the BMC Protest,we urge our readers to react as to what isreally the fact of the matter, from your viewpoint.

STRONG BONDCONSTRUCTION

The era of high speed communication has dawned uponus; from e-mail to high speed internet. We have come along way since the days of the telegraph and postal mail.At the heart of this communication revolution is the cell-phone; probably the single most important invention ofour time.

Today the cellphone has become an integral part ofour lives and we take it for granted. It maybe hard to be-lieve that even the basic cellphones that we use todayhave more computing power than the computer whichwas used in the Apollo 11 mission which took man to themoon.

Gini Dassan is a local entrepreneur who made it bigby capitalizing on the mobile revolution. While stillstudying law at government law college, he came up withthe idea of starting his own mobile retail store in 1998.

Initially he faced many challenges and difficultiesbut with a lot of hard work, innovation and determina-tion he crossed every hurdle. Today he has a chain of 6mobile retail stores in Mumbai, 3 of them located inBandra. He also has the credit of starting the first everBlackberry store in Mumbai. H.K. Mobiles is a wellknown brand and caters to everyone from gadget freaksto celebrities.

The stores are a unique one stop destination for allyour mobile related issues. Complete with amazing am-bience and equipped with an experienced and helpfulstaff, it hits a bulls eye with customer satisfaction. Thestore boasts a wide range of high-end cellphones and anumber of subsidiary services such as backups, datatransfer, anti-virus, etc. at very reasonable prices.

Technology changes, mends and molds our lives inways we can't imagine. As technology advances it trans-forms everything around us but we always fail to notice.

40 years ago no one could have foreseen that wewould be using something called a smart phone and an-other 40 years from now who knows how the wondersof technology will change our world; guess we'll just haveto wait and watch.

This was what started the stormy situation. The doctor who eventually operated

on Javed, briefed us about this case. He toldus, “The two year old child was playing inhis house with a torch. His curiosity got himto open it & remove the battery. He acci-dently put it into his nose. His mother wasin another room & only noticed it when thechild started crying & bleeding from thenose. She panicked & called her husbandwho is a garage mechanic. They immedi-ately rushed the child to a hospital, whereattempts were made to remove the foreignbody from the nose. This resulted in thechild bleeding profusely.

Finally, the child’s parents contactedme (Dr. J. Peter Rodrigues, ENT Surgeon &Consultant at Holy Family Hospital.

I advised an immediate x-ray. The x-ray showed a foreign body deeply embeddedin the upper posterior aspect of the nose;which is seen on the x-ray (see pic). Thechild was taken the next day for surgeryunder general anesthesia at the Holy FamilyHospital, where after clearing the nose & re-moving the blood clots, the foreign bodywas extracted. This was done using specialforceps.

The importance of this case is thatsometimes these foreign bodies get dis-lodged & go into the lungs. If this happens,it would be a life-threatening condition. Theurgency of the matter is that the foreignbody should always be removed as soon aspossible.”

We visited Javed & met his parentspost-operation. They were very pleased withthe line of treatment at Holy Family Hospi-tal & the personal care of Dr. J. Peter Ro-drigues.

Children are naturally inquisitive &

often wonder how things work. Usually, they display this curiosity by asking ques-tions, or by exploring the world aroundthem. One of the dangers that can occur asa result of this curiosity is that your child

may place foreign objects into his or hermouth, nose, & ears. Therefore it is imper-ative that very young children should not beleft unattended.

What is cataract surgery with ‘eye-drop anaesthesia’?Since the 1980’s, cataract surgery has required the in-jection of an anesthetic near the eye. Now advancesin surgical techniques & technology have made it pos-sible to perform the surgery using eyedropsalone tomake the eye numb.

What are the main advantages of not injecting theanesthetic?1. The pain of an injection near the eye is avoided.2. Potential common complications associated withthe injection such as injury to blood vessels aroundthe eye, injury to eye muscles or lid muscles areavoided.3. The rare but potentially serious complications suchas perforation of the eye, injury to the optic nerve, misdirected injection into a blood vessel are alsoavoided.

Is it safe for patients with heart disease ? Yes, it is safer for patients who have irregular heart-

beats as the pain & anxiety of the injection can alterthe heart rhythm in such patients.

We monitor the heart rate & ecg & oxygenationof the patient throughout the procedure & we findthat there are very few changes during the surgerywith eye drop anaesthesia.

Do the patient’s eyes move during the operation?Yes, the patients can move their eyes during the op-eration. The surgeon however is operating with twoinstruments & can stabilize the eye during the opera-tion.

Can I speak during the operation if I am uncomfort-able?Yes, you can tell us immediately if you have any prob-lem. In fact your surgeon will talk to you throughoutthe surgery & tell you what you will feel next.

Why is a pad not applied at the end of surgery witheye drop anaesthesia? Since the eye muscles are not immobilised, the recov-ery from anaesthesia is immediate. So there is noneed to apply a pad – on your way home, all you needis a pair of sun glasses. More importantly, you canstart using anti-infectives & anti-inflammatory eye-drops early in the post-operative period. This helpsprevent complications & improves surgical outcomes.

Are all Doctors operating by this method?A survey of members of the American Society ofCataract & Refractive Surgeons revealed that the sur-geons using eye-drop anaesthesia had increased from45% in 1999 to 70% in 2008.

At Oculus eye hospital 99% cataract surgeriesare done with eye drop anaesthesia.

Bandra is not what she used to be......arefrain you often hear these days. Storiestell of a once quaint little suburb, sprawled around tiled cottages, sitting inchirping gardens dotted with sweet waterwells. A place soaked in tranquil, warm, sunny afternoons and abundant withcourteous, simple people. But today, thismuch sought after suburb is slowly losingits charm to a faster-paced, noisier andincreasingly dirtier locale; a far cry fromits former self. And yet, among all of thefactors contributing to a general decline, you find instances of rare and unusualevents quietly unfolding among hercosylanes. One such inspiring tale of hope isthe sort of story you find only in the rarestof places, and in this case, the kachhradabba!

But that’s not how it all started out. Denzil Rego, a self confessed Bandra

boy, speaks of how the HELM initiativewas only the first step towards findinghim elbow deep in kacchhra or kitchenwaste. HELM came about as anassociation of ALMs of the localneighbourhood interested and willing towork together on common civic issues.Over the years, it has grown to becomemore inclusive, attempting to addressproblems affecting not only civic butenvironmental issues as well.

Together with Christopher Pereira, aclassmate and partner-in-crime, Regostarted experimenting with compostingkitchen waste, beginning with their AlmaMater, St. Stanislaus School. “We justasked the Principal if we could implementa waste management solution like acomposter and that’s how it all began”

Today the two have set up wastecomposting units in a number of housingsocieties around Bandra as well as someschools and even a local Bank! Explainingthe process of composting, Rego says acorrect balance of wet waste from thekitchen and dry waste such as leaves orsaw dust is required for a completetransformation into compost across a one

month cycle. Two sizes of composters havebeen fitted out by them to convenientlymanage the waste from the kitchens of agroup of families or a larger institution, like a school. As part of the product, theyalso provide a service of training in the useof the composter along with provision ofdry materials as well as hands on supportfor the initial days of starting up. “Bonesand fish from non vegetarian waste takelonger to breakdown and extend thecycle”; says Rego, “but it works just as wellin converting into humus, a highlynutritive soil for growing vegetables andherbs.”

Pereira, an avid exponent ofinnovative techniques to save the

environment, shows us around his gardenor ‘lab’ as he calls it, for where he testsstuff out! Currently under construction, isa seemingly simple network of pipesrunning along the wall of his building, connecting the waste water from all thebathrooms into a filtration pit. The idea isto conserve fresh, potable water byreusing the grey water from thebathrooms, collecting and filtering it atfirst and then using it for purposes likewatering the garden.

“My next project will be a verticalgarden” says Pereira, as he points out tothe flat surface of an unhindered wall ofhis building.

I grin broadly at his plans and feel a

strong sense of hope that all is not lost.Perhaps a quiet revolution is slowlyclearing our homes of waste and maybringing new techniques to help improveour surroundings. Maybe Bandra willregain her lost crown as Queen of thesuburbs. And perhaps this time the crownmight be a vertical garden?

No small thanks due to the efforts ofmen like Rego and Periera or should I sayBandra Boys with a thing for waste? Jointhem in their quest to create wealth fromwaste, read more athttp://www.helm.org.in/index.htm

Recommendations madeby The Institute forHuman Development forthe development ofChristians, Sikhs,Buddhists, including NeoBuddhists and Parsis, notadhered by the presentgovernment since 2008.

The Institute for HumanDevelopment on 25th

March 2008, had submitted a project on ‘Socio-Economic Status of the Notified MinorityCommunities (Other than Muslims)’ to ShriMohamed Shafi Qureshi Chairperson, NationalCommission for Minorities (NCM).

The study was conducted on the four NotifiedMinority Communities i.e. Christians, Sikhs,Buddhists, including Neo Buddhists and Parsis.(NMCs). The report had six recommendations onHealth, Education, Higher Education, SkillDevelopment, Entrepreneurial Support andDevelopment and Social Security.

There has been no development orimplementation of the six recommendations madeby the Institute for Human Development.

The present government since 25th March2008 has done nothing in specific for the NMCswith respect to the six recommendations. Is it thatthe above NMCs i.e. Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, including Neo Buddhists and Parsis are of noimportance to the current government? Or theirnumbers do not matter for their vote bank?

Why have the government not adhered to thesix recommendations made by the Institute forHuman Development on 25th March 2008, whenit can implement the recommendation made bythe Justice Sachar committee on the MuslimCommunity, much later in 2010?

In these premises, I appeal to the governmentto be fair to all the minorities in this country. Don’twork for a single minority - and create differencesbetween the minorities. This is bad politics.

If Justice Sachar committee recommendationcan be implemented for the Muslims, then why arerecommendations made by The Institute forHuman Development for the other NotifiedMinorities not implemented.

I also request that the current governmentshould also include in its list of minorities, theJewish Community in India. The JewishCommunity has been left out by every committeein their study. The Jewish synagogues in India arevery old - and need to be uplifted.

It is high time that the present governmentlooks into the development of these synagoguesand the Jewish people of India.

Adv. Shane Cardoz

A project was submitted on “Socio-Economic Status of theNotified Minority Communities (other than Muslims)” byPreet Rustagi, Abhay Kumar, Balwant Singh Mehta, SunilKumar Mishra, Payel Dutta Mazumdar of INSTITUTE FORHUMAN DEVELOPMENT, NIDM Building, 3rd Floor, IIPACampus, I.P Estate, New Delhi - 110002, on 25th March 2008to Shri Mohamed Shafi Qureshi Chairperson, NationalCommission for Minorities (NCM), Lok Nayak Bhavan (FifthFloor), Khan Market New Delhi – 110003 and copy was madeto 1. Smt. Deepa Jain Singh, Secretary, NCM, 2. Shri S.K.Swami, Joint Secretary, NCM.

The following are the recommendations of the Institute ForHuman Development:1. The need for making data available across NMCs, enhancingthe legal basis for ensuring equitable access as well asproviding equal opportunities also enlisted in the SacharCommittee report, may be overarchingrecommendations for this report also.

2. The emphasis laid on inclusive growth inthe Eleventh Five Year Plan cannot beattained unless issues of inequity anddiscrimination affecting the NMCs arealso addressed.

3. Universal coverage of education andhealth, at least up to the basic levels, iscritical.

4. Community and social group-specific factorsaffect enrolment into schools and educationalattainment.

5. Class and gender dimensions also influence perceptions, attitudes and behaviour.

6. By undertaking a separate analysis of the NMCs, some ofthese aspects are highlighted, which can be given due attentionby planners and policymakers.

i. Healtha) Children’s nutrition levels require special attention from theview of addressing food security levels among the poor andbackward sections of the population. The Buddhist childrenreport the worst stunting, washing and child mortalityindicators;

b) Improving the anaemia status of mothers is critical forreduction of child anaemia levels as well as for improvingnutritional status. Efforts through existing ICDS programmesto provide iron supplementation need to be strengthenedfurther to improve access of the minorities, especially thesocially and economically deprived sections among them;

c) Outreach of immunization with children receiving allvaccinations must be given special attention for the NMCs;

d) Awareness regarding early marriages & childbirths for their

detrimental health impacts on women and children isrequired;

e) Overall nutritional, child care and health awareness isessential. This improves with higher female literacy levels;

f ) The Sikh community records the lowest child sex-ratiosamong the 0-9 years category, which is extremely worrisome.

ii. Educationa) The literacy rate is the lowest among Scheduled Caste Sikhs, followed by OBC Sikhs across all communities. The latter havein fact registered a decline in literacy rate over time. The Sikhshave the highest proportion of out of school children.Education that is sought to be universalised at least at theelementary level, must address this community in a targeted

fashion to include the SC and OBC Sikhs specially.

iii. Higher Educationa) The country as a whole requires attentionin this area, given the low proportion ofhigher-educated persons. The NMCs toorequire support through reservations, scholarships and special tutorials toincrease their share in higher educationlevels. The Buddhists, who arepredominantly SCs, have lower shares ofliterates among the tertiary levels ofeducation than the all-India figures.

iv. Skill Developmenta) Special support is required for improving access

to technical degrees and diplomas, especially for thepoor and backward segments of the NMCs.

v. Entrepreneurial Support and Developmenta) Social barriers influence participation in the labour marketsand act as deterrents for entrepreneurial endeavours. This isfurther compounded by inaccessibility to credit channels.Mere policies to develop entrepreneurship or provide trainingand credit may not be adequate for elimination of suchbarriers. Positive interventions through direct policies such asreservations for the socio-economically poorer segments arerequired.

b) Improving access to credit and initiatives such as Self HelpGroups (SHGs) , especially for women who are not in aposition to participate in labour activities outside thehousehold given their domestic responsibilities, can helpenhance female work participation.

c) Given the high dependence on self employment by mostNMCs, improving access to credit can the scale of theiractivities.

vi. Social Securitya) Improving social security measures for the NMCs, especiallythe poor, informal sector workers among them is extremelycritical.

On the 31st of October 2013, St. Joseph’s Convent HighSchool Bandra had a great celebration planned by the staffof SJC for the students. This celebration was an “advanced”Children’s Day Celebration!

SJC has the tradition of beginning every day and everycelebration too with prayer and that was followed even forthis celebration. The prayer service and dance were fol-lowed by a dance that was a fusion of 3 such dances thatcan’t even be imagined together-Salsa, Bharta Natyam andJive! The drama grabbed everyone’s attention towards it be-cause of it’s humour and the wonderful acting of the teach-ers! All of us, students had a hearty laugh! The Drama wasa Musical Spoof of ” Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”. Ithad the typical “bollywood tadka” in it! The students de-manded the drama to be put once more because they en-joyed it so much! The programme ended with the teacherssinging songs like “Nani Teri Morni” and “Lakdi ki Kathi”that reminded all us of our childhood!

The teachers of SJC showed how much they cared forus by putting up this wonderful programme that touchedour hearts and made us realize that what we do for ourteachers is nothing in comparison of what they do for us!All that students could say was a BIG THANK YOU! We allare very lucky to have such energetic, loving and kind teach-ers!

CROSSES & BMCThe BMC has been troubling the ChristianCommunity every now & then with the issueof demolition of The Sacred Catholicsymbol "The CROSS". It is an inexplicableact which these BMC people should not puttheir hands into.

I condemn this action & urge moreand more Bandraites to pledge support forthe Christians who are the originalinhabitants of Bandra. I, being a Muslim -will do my bit in writing a letter to BMCalong with the signature of may Non-Christians showing support against thisugly act by the BMC. The BMC are justtrying to divert attention from other moreimportant duties that they failed to carryout like repair of potholed roads, fallingbuildings, bad handling of garbage etc. …which the common man will complainabout. This is a very sad but true state ofaffairs in Bandra - at the moment.Shameless BMC - like always.

Zafar Shaikh

It seems very clear that there is lack of co-ordination between the authorized body(Mumbai Municipal Corp. Committee forregularization of religious structures) andthe H West Ward. Calling us for a hearingwithout studying the papers submitted forthe Carter Road crosses, creates doubts inpeoples mind about their intentions.

I was the Secretary of the Rajan Cross, when we submitted the documents on23.01.2013, for the cross near Prithi Kunj, which was built in the year 1898, today 114years old. We have an association called the"Rajan Student Cross Fund", which builtand looks after this cross. We submittedtrue copies, attested by advocates, ofdocuments like the Souvenir of GoldenJubilee function held on 15th May 1948. Wehave minutes in our records of meetingsheld way back in 1941, and hence submittedthe minutes of the meeting of 20th July1941 at 11 am.

Having submitted these documents, the MCGM should not have pasted thenotice on the cross, but should havecontacted me - as they have the name, address, mobile no. By pasting the notice, which they claim they have pasted undersection 485, it clearly shows that they havenot read the documents submitted.

I voiced my opinion of having ahearing in public, when a crowd wasgathered outside the MCGM office, at 11am, the time of the hearing. But the Asst.

Commissioner (H-West ward), Mr.Prashant Sapkale, decided after the protestto call off the hearing. I also met the Asst.Commissioner after the protest rally - andhe stated that he had called off the hearing.I showed him the minutes of the meeting of1941 and the Golden Jubilee Souvenir of1948 - and again informed him that it waswrong for the BMC to paste notices on thecross, when there is a contactable person.

The Asst Commissioner stated that hehad apologized to the crowd 3 times forsending the notice. However I intend tosend a letter for the record that I visited theMCGM for the hearing, which he called off.

Warren Fernandes

This cross issue is just a ploy by our craftyelected representatives to divert the mindsof the public to sentimental issues, so thatthey buy time to do all their sponsoredillegal activities.

It is sad but true, how they havecontinued the British India policy of divideand rule – to achieve their election goals. They are making a mockery of thedemocratic process, by misusing the loopholes.

These politicians should be avoidedlike the plague – and VOTED out of power.

Hemant Tambe

I would like to know if the Asst.Commissioner H-West Ward has given inwriting what he has publicly apologized. This is important for the record, as nopolitician can misuse this issue again forpolitical mileage.

Anyway, it was wonderful to see howBandra Buzz has captured the BMC protestagainst all odds. This is courageous freepress at its best.

Leela Malkani

Why is the BMC targeting H-West wardcrosses and NOT other religious structuresfrom other denominations???

This appears to be a politicallyengineered move to floor the Christiansdown, humiliate and hurt their sentiments... None are so blind like those with eyes -and cannot see this move.

Ivan R. Lemos

We Catholics have been a soft target of alland sundry. We need to show our strengthmore forcefully, or whatever little is left ofour ancestral legacy, will also be taken awayfrom us, and our future generations, will

hold us responsible for our laxity. So, let'salways come out in large numbers, with fullforce and support the cause of ourcommunity. Let's nip this crookedness inthe bud!!

Geoffrey Machado

Extortion… Blackmail… and hurtingminorities is the game plan to divertattention from potholed roads, fallingbuildings, inept handling of garbage andother dereliction of civic duties. I amashamed and hurt... for this attitude againstthe most peaceful community - theChristians.

Firoze Shakir

It is so wonderful to see all communities &religions coming together to help theirbrethren.... FANTASTIC... this is TRULYBandra at its BEST... Thanks everyone...God Bless you all !

ALL NIGHT LONG ?It has been observed that some of theworld's greatest cities are defined by theirnight life. People feel safe while travellingand there is a sense of community, whichhas been proved in New York, London andParis - where the world's business hubs andthe its residents have the fun.

But in Mumbai to have fun is a crime.I strongly feel that Mumbai must be

made 24x7 working by allowingentertainment outlets to work day and nightwith proper license, to redeem some of thebad name the city have received. Thecurrent law is nothing but to seek rent, raids, and harassment to the people, toshow that business and entertainmentshould not prosper. This must be changed,as Mumbai has always encouragedentrepreneurship. The city has given rise tosome of the biggest industrial houses in the

country and some of them went on toconquer the world.

Therefore the clampdown on the city'snightlife - and the associated corruption byallowing the nightlife to continue illegally -is deeply saddening.

TRAFFIC TRAUMAIt is very sad that our traffic police at Bandraare not doing their real work. Instead, theymove in a group of four or six and standnext to the florist at St. Andrew’s Church orat Lilavati Hospital, just to catch defaulters.Let us remind them, that their real job is tocontrol traffic.

On Saturday I was moving from 16throad Khar towards Mount Mary Church. Itwas very difficult to make my way up tillthere I met up with heavy traffic jams at PaliNaka, Hill Road, St. Stanislaus school, A1bakery, Mehboob Studio. Where is thetraffic police? Nowhere in sight !

They manage traffic for Mr. SatyapalSingh at early hours - and keep the roadsfree - but as soon as his car goes away, thetraffic police also go away? Can't they keepthe roads ‘traffic-free’ like they do it for Mr.Singh, as we also need to reach our jobs ontime?

We are public tax payers too - so whyare we being deprived of our rights? Allrestaurants and shopping malls right fromHill Road, Globus till Patels at MehboobStudio have customers coming at peakhours - and parking double - even parkingin no parking zones like Nature’s Basket atHill Road, which has the most disturbingparking.

I request the traffic police to showsome humanity towards people and workfor the people - not just to show their higherofficial ‘a good picture of Bandra traffic’,which is completely wrong .

Dear Readers,Mid October in Bandra is a time whenpeople are in a transition mode. Theweather is changing – and with upcomingfestivities, the mood is upswing.Planning, preparing, contacting… is highpriority.

This can be seen everywhere. On HillRoad, Linking Road, Carter Road,Bandstand… and the little lanes and by-lanes that make Bandra so unique. Inoffices and homes, event deadlines arediscussed in details. Everyone seems to bein the event management business – intheir own little way. Take-A-Break seemsto be the current mantra. Picnics and shortholidays around Mumbai are imperative tomaintaining your health and getting theright balance in an otherwise hecticlifestyle. The green surroundings andpollution-free air works wonders to ourbody, mind & spirit – more than any‘wonder’ drug’.

Meanwhile, focused on the upcoming2014 elections, people are playing gameswith an agenda that is easily recognized byinformed citizens. Religious sentimentsare aroused. Divide and rule is the name ofthe game. Carrots are offered to ‘modern-day Judases’. Rumours are spread to spoilthe name of opposing groups. Claims aremade, even though the job done shouldhave been done anyway – and in any caseis done using tax-payers money. Plans are

plenty to create confusion – trying toportray to the common man, that we areyour saviour – ‘you just need to cast yourvote in our favour’. Imagine, all this ismiles away from the heart of the matter.

Yes, the games people play in Bandraare not taken lightly. We have one of thebest activists who monitor every move -and do not hesitate to react when needed. With better co-operation amongst activistgroups in recent months – our authoritiespolicy of divide and rule is not making adent. People’s Power is at a peak – and asof now, there is a ‘no-nonsense policy’.

Bandra Buzz hasn’t hesitated todeliver. With an un-biased view, ourreporting has let people see what’shappening – and have their own viewpointto the burning issues, caused when peopleplay games. To report any news, upcomingevent or send your reactions, do email me:[email protected]. Do enjoyyourself during the upcoming festivals.Bandra and her surrounding suburbs havea lot to offer. Wishing you a Happy Diwali

& a Prosperous NewYear ahead. Till nexttime, take care.

Games People Play

Bandra Buzz EDITORIALNovember 201312

Page 13: Vol. IV Issue 11 (i)

I refer to the article in the 'Mumbai Mirror' dated 15 Octo-ber 2013 that appeared on Page 6 published by one YogeshSadhwani. It certainly emanates from political opponentsthus dragging and misleading the Christian community atlarge. More so, I am dismayed with the Letters to the Editorin the October issue of the Bandra Buzz, Page 13 by a fewpeople whose preference to political parties is well known, except for the article written by Advocate Shane Cardozwhich clearly states that at no point did Rev. Fr. WilliamAthaide ever ask the parishioners to vote for a particularcandidate or party.

One of the parishioners interviewed seems to have alapse of memory including the journalist. Since with a littleinvestigation, they would have found that The TOI in Sep-tember 2012 had clearly mentioned that there was a prob-lem in getting the required permissions for the SeptemberGarden and the Parish Priest and September Garden com-mittee had sought assistance from the local MLA . Hence,I presume, in gratitude invited him for the opening of theSeptember Garden but the way the article is twisted to suittheir convince is appalling .

The September issue of the Bandra Buzz prominentlydisplays a photograph of Rajnath Singh, Ashish Shelar, aso-called eminent Builder and the person referred to in thereference article in 'Mumbai Mirror' posing in front of thealtar at the Mount Mary's Basilica. Why did he not raise ahue and cry on this 'photo-hop'? From the above it is un-doubtedly proved that the press article has been engineeredby a few to defame the Parish Priest without any rhyme orreason, only for their selfish interest. How can we forget theO.P. Tyagi's Freedom of Religion Bill of 1978 when lakhs ofus protested at the Azad Maidan?

During the recently concluded Municipal electionsthis person was sending SMSs to vote for a particular can-didate which speaks volumes on his double standardsadopted and we respect that since an individual has hispreference.

The Bandra Constituency consists of a large educatedpopulation, and we certainly do not need the press or othersto guide us on who we should vote for.

I only hope that these people do not approach the Vat-ican to complain to the Pope on the article that appearedon Page 11 of HT dated 22 October 2013.

I know Rev. Father William Athaide in his earlier daysas Principal of St. Andrew's High School, have interactedwith him on a number of occasions and know him as an im-partial, unbiased priest.

Cornel K Gonsalves

Please do not see our respect for the clergy as a weakness,we will fight as a community and we will not let Bandra be-come another Byculla, Mazgaon or Bhendi Bazar.”

These points are my reaction to Fr. Warner BrendonD’Souza’s Letter posted on the doors of Mount CarmelChurch and printed in the Examiner which parishionerswere urged to read. To read this letter, please visit:www.bandrabuzz.com/fr-warner.html.

This is a Clarification not a Contradiction as I wasquoted in the article I would like to state my views on thepoints, as per his letter:

Point 1Are we a bunch of non achievers, that we have to call a localpolitician to inaugurate the ‘September Garden’? Do we nothave anybody in our community good enough to inauguratethe same? When Fr D’Souza talks about his Eminence Va-lerian Cardinal Gracias calling the President, Vice Presidentand Prime Minister to a religious function in 1964, let us beinformed that all those events were pertaining to the 38thINTERNATIONAL EUCHARISTIC CONGRESS held inBombay which was a world event - and the then Pope PaulVI was in attendance, and also had an approximate 20,000foreign visitors. Being the state head of the Vatican, it wasalso protocol that they be invited.

Is he comparing the 38th International EucharisticCongress a huge world event to the ‘September Garden’??-& the local MLA to the PM of India, interesting.

How can he say it’s a non-religious fair? The ‘SeptemberGarden’ is part of a religious event. If a fair is being organ-ized by the church, on the church premises, funds collectedby the church and used by the church - how can it be a non-religions fair?

Point 5It is a dictate of the supreme court that no religious placebe used for political propaganda, so the more politically cor-rect thing to do from the pulpit would be to urge people toenrol and make sure they come out to vote come electionday and leave the rest to the people to make an educatedchoice, unless Fr William feels we are not capable of doingthat.

The homilies of his Eminence Valerian Cardinal Gra-cias have said to talk about political issues, about the in-volvement of Catholics in the political process and theclergy to get involved in the issues yes but not prompt peo-ple and get involved in politics, today people are more edu-cated than 1964 - and can make their own decisions.

Point 6I am glad the journo chose to awaken the conscience of thecongregation towards immoral politicians, because we in

Bandra face the scorpions day in and day out

Point 7It was the undersigned who was called. The article may hurtbut definitely not mislead the community. I am sure we aredone with sweeping things under the rug. I’m glad he high-lights the fact there is a real issue - and the people of Bandraonly know how REAL it is.

We are not doubting Fr Athaide’s personality - and I’m surepeople who deal or interact with him have created their ownopinion.

My last comment is to Fr D’Souza himself - if he feelsso strongly about the article, why not take it up with thepaper itself, they should be replying to his questions, insteadof readers of The Examiner.

Finally, I want to say, “Please do not see our respect forthe clergy as a weakness, we will fight as a community andwe will not let Bandra become another Byculla , Mazgaonor Bhendi Bazar.”

The above too is in defence of the truth - and nothingbut the truth for my community, so help me God.
